Title: DBMA Winter Camp 2012
Post by: Crafty_Dog on October 22, 2011, 07:55:18 AM
Woof All:

Some of us may remember Gilbert Tenio from Guro Inosanto's book "The Filipino Martial Arts", whom I had the honor of meeting many years ago (early 90s?) at Dentoy Revillar's home in Stockton. Since then he has passed on.

To my way of thinking there are many valid approaches out there. However that does not mean that it is efficient or effective to accumulate as much as one can from all these systems. To function efficiently and effectively in the high adrenal circumstances of a DLO situation, the parts must fit together.

Recently a friend shared some footage with me of Tenio's heir, Grandmaster Art Gonzalez of Tenio Decuerdas Eskrima. The footage intrigued me greatly. Not only was the orientation very practical, gritty anti-knife, but GM Art was getting to many positions similar to the ones we like for our DLO (Die Less Often) and so it occurred to me that maybe GM Art could help me grow DBMA's DLO system.

An introduction was arranged and a couple of weeks ago as part of a training expedition (that included two days with Rory Miller, Maija Soderholm of Maestor Sonny Umpad's Visayan Corto Cadena Eskrima, and friends) I spend two days in Lodi with GM Art.

I am very glad I did and I am pleased to announce that GM Art will be the guest instructor at the DBMA Winter Camp 2012 which will be a "Die Less Often" intensive.

We are in the process of deciding when the Camp will be held. It will be in February or March. At the moment we are leaning towards President's Weekend in February.

The Adventure continues!

That is part of the logic  :-D

Pretty Kitty and I are working on the cost.  Also, we will be seeing if we can get a group discount rate at the Best Western Hotel (which is on the water btw) or some other decent place.

Just as an FYI we had a horrible experience at the Quality Inn on aviation blvd in Hermosa when we were out for the public gathering.  After staying there a few times in the past we were shocked at the poor experience,  the room was terrible and the managements ability to fix problems  during the stay just didn't happen.  To top it off the  managements ability to make things correct after the stay was even worse.  DO NOT STAY THERE! We wont use them again and  I STRONGLY advise any of you not to stay there.

Terry, that's a bummer!   :-(  What's the price there?

I usually recommend Sunrise Best Western in RB.  I'm going to contact them about a group discount.  I'll keep you posted...

it was around $150.00 a night, for that you get..... over an hour to wait in the lobby to check in at 9pm because they gave your room  away in error, then they send you to a second room with a 1/4 inch of standing water on the floor,  you also don't get a phone in your room, oh and you don't get air conditioning in your room for the 4 days your there, and an unmaid bed when you walk in the room they finally dump on you because they are over booked for the entire weekend.    Again i advise everyone to avoid Quality Inn on aviation blvd in Hermosa.

Woof Dog Terry, Wow!! Not my experience at all. I have recommended this hotel to people in the past and never have had a experience like this before. Also I have never paid more than 100 dollars a night for a room, usually less, how come your room was so much?.
Was this during the tribal Gathering that this occurred?  You never said anything and I don't recall any of the other guys saying anything?
I'm surprised to hear this.
I have also stayed at the Hotel PK Is talking about. Its nice there.  WOOF!  :-(

Woof HD,

This was during the public gathering in September.

I suppose it could have been the perfect storm of mistakes and BAD customer service during the stay but the Head managers response after the fact was so disappointing, he just didn't want to make it right.

I even explained to the manager that i had stayed there before and would be coming back to Hermosa for years to come, it was clear that he didn't care by his actions.  I also made it clear that i would voice my oppinion to my friends who also travel and stay in Hermosa.

I stuck it in this thread as i realized that some of you would be making hotel reservations for the camp and didnt want to let this slip off my radar before i shared with everyone my experience.

I had gotten used to the location and had learned my way around with that hotel as a central way point of reference for me while in the Hermosa area. .   I plan on staying at the Best Western or some other hotel when i come out for The Tribal in the spring.

By now I have learned my way around Hermosa and its such a beautiful community that i wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in the area, i feel safe in the community and enjoy the restaurants and the night life and the beach area, i will just be using a different hotel on my future trips.

woof,

Dog Terry

Woof Dog Terry, That sucks. I think you would like the Best Western that PK is talking about. If she can get a group/DB rate I will go back there also.
If memory serves me right, the reason we changed from there was that after our inital stay there, we checked to use it again and the rates had gone up pretty significantly. (So we looked else where)
Since that time though we have found that the rates do change depending on the season or events.

For the record, I did not care for the Hacienda hotel in El Segundo, and some of the guys used to like to stay there.
I'm sorry about your bad experience at the Quality Inn, I feel some what responsible. WOOF!

I actually liked my experience at the Quality Inn. The price is fairly standard for a "Beach City" location. The front staff was very nice and the room is VERY big. Now, remember, I come from a third world country so my expectations are fairly low. Maybe Dog Terry was wearing his Overall, and carrying his Banjo...this could have marked him for an Outsider :). I even had an opportunity to run down the hall mostly naked (maybe that's what Terry didn't like)hahaha!
I remember that Dog Terry let me shower in his room at the Tribal,...maybe me using his only towel was an issue.
Was it the Weight-Watcher convention or the Pig Farming rally that struck a nerve.

I'm just happy you're coming bro. Whether you're Quality or Comfort Inn, just remember that not all the ladies in California look like those on Baywatch. And I'll wear the Thong if you need to see someone in one

Woof All:

As previously announced the DBMA Winter Camp will be an intensive in DBMA’s “Die Less Often” material (the interface of gun, knife, and empty hand) and the guest instructor will be Grandmaster Art Gonzalez of the legendary Stockton system  of Gilbert Tenio known as “Tenio Decuerdas”.  It will be held Friday through Sunday, February 17-19.  The thread of record on our public forum is http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=2246.0

What led me to GM Art was footage that was shared to me of him teaching.  Not only did the material seem quite good to me, a lot of it was based upon positions we seek and use in DBMA’s DLO material and it resonated with my sense of how real attacks can be.  After training with him for a couple of days my initial hunch was confirmed; there is good synergy with what we already have.  This is important.  It is not enough that material be good, it also needs to blend seamlessly or else one is left with a hodge-podge of techniques that may be individually good, but do not flow together well as a seamless whole.

There will be more info about GM Art after I come back from my business trip (I leave early on Saturday), but for now I would like to give a sense of what the Camp will be addressing.

As those of you who have explored our DLO material already know (and putting aside the gun vs. knife issues which were the principle focus of DLO 2), DLO starts with the Kali Fence, both mobile and close quarter.  Addressed as part of the overview of DLO-1, this was addressed in much greater detail in DLO-3.  We have the study of MUC (Managing Unknown Contacts) including cues of criminal assault and developing awareness of the legal environments in which we operate as well as the physical environment of a potential problem.

With the mental clarity afforded from this material, we have initiation and interception techniques—and of course we have reaction techniques.

One of the most important of the reaction techniques is “the Dog Catcher”, which serves as a “pick up” to establish control of an attacking limb—without our needing to know if it is armed or not—and the matrix of options from there.  In DLO-1 and DLO-3 the Dog Catcher is shown against what we believe to be the most common of criminal knife assaults-- the “Prison Sewing Machine”-- be they of graduates of gangs and/or our prison system or simply emotionally enraged persons.

In our opinion, to be able to improve one’s odds against this sort of attack is a pretty good trick, but of course handling the basic hammer grip PSM is but the beginning.  There is also the “Ice Pick PSM”

Then, once the knife arm itself can be dealt with there are the additional layers of complexity that come from the use of the live hand (i.e. the hand without the knife).   The two principle modalities here are “push & poke” and “grab & stab”.  (Push & Poke is where the empty hand is used to push and disrupt in between the stabs of the PSM.  Grab & Stab is where the empty hand is used to grab the intended victim (often by the neck, but also by the clothing) to prevent his escape and to disrupt his balance and composure.)  As part of functionalizing the Dog Catcher for these additional and even more challenging levels, we will be showing how to test and adrenalize the Dog Catcher in the context of “Kali Tudo” ™-- which is our MMA subsystem, as well as the structure we call, with apologies to Charles Dickens, “The Arf-ful Dodger”.

I should mention that GM Art has some very interesting material to offer with regard to P&P and G&S; material which is well-grounded in the understanding of what he calls “the bad boys” really do.  More on this when I come back.

I should mention that we pride ourselves on our ability to teach to all levels.  Whether you are just beginning with this sort of thing, or whether you have been working with our material for a while now, I think you will find this camp fun, fresh, and functional.

Woof All:

The 2012 DBMA Winter Camp will be an intensive in DBMA's "Die Less Often" (DLO) system. The Camp will be held Friday through Sunday, February 17-19 in the Hermosa Beach area of Los Angeles. The thread of record on our public forum is http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=2246.0

The guest instructor will be Grandmaster Art Gonzalez of the legendary Stockton system of Gilbert Tenio known as "Tenio Decuerdas". Many of you may not know either of these names or only may have a vague sense of them. Although in the way of many Filipino masters GM Gilbert Tenio avoided the spotlight, it is my understanding that in that time and place he was known by those in the know-and he was very well respected. If you are lucky enough to have a copy of Guro Inosanto's now out-of-print "The Filipino Martial Arts" you can find him in there. Also, below you will find a brief description by GM Art of his teacher and the system.

If you are like me and you know something of the story of Guro Inosanto's youth in Stockton training with the Filipino masters there in the 60s and 70s and wish you could have been there to taste the feel of the Art fresh from its homeland as Guro Inosanto was, will appreciate that with GM Art you are getting to taste it but one generation removed.

What led me to GM Art was footage of him teaching that someone shared with me. Not only did what I saw resonate with my sense of reality, but-and this is really important-- a lot of it was based upon positions we seek and use in our "Die Less Often" material (DLO being our name for DBMA's material for the interface of gun, knife, and empty hand). This is important. It is not enough that material be good for us to want to pick it up for ourselves, it also needs to blend seamlessly-- otherwise one is left with a hodge-podge of techniques that may be individually good, but do not flow well together. After training with GM Art for a couple of days my initial hunch was confirmed; there is good synergy with what DLO already has and it offers some solutions to problems that are currently difficult for us.

Furthermore, GM Art naturally teaches the technical material in the context of the psychological and physical trickery used by those he calls "the bad boys". Without this sort of understanding one's anti-knife game can have some seriously weak links in it. On the other hand if you experience the deceit, trickery, disruption, and emotional intensity as part of your learning method, in my opinion your survival rate goes up dramatically. This is invaluable!!!

So what will we be covering at this Camp in our three days together?

GM Art will teach whatever he feels like in Decuerdas' gun/knife/empty-hand paradigm. Though our words here about what he will be teaching are few, know that the material will be abundant!

As for me, here is the outline of I will be teaching in my half of things. This is "DBMA Walk as a Warrior for all your Days" material.

MINDSET:

• Surviving knife and gunshot wounds: In DLO situations, getting wounded is a real possibility. Are you happy with your current level in this regard? Know just how much you can survive and solve after the attack can be a TREMENDOUS boost to composure during the attack! This section will be led by Iraqi veteran combat medic "Kaju Dog" who will introduce us to how to get started on this vital skill set

• Legal issues: We all have heard of the importance of being aware of our environment, but some of us have yet to realize that this includes our LEGAL environment. Remember it is not a "justice system" it is a "legal system", and the two can be at considerable variance with each other at times! You need to know how to keep track of the laws of your home state and states you might visit.

• Rules of Engagement (ROE) : Of course moral and spiritual issues come first, but knowing the legal issues involved will help you in developing your own personal (ROE). Knowing what your ROE are in advance means you won't have to work them out on the fly while your "primal monkey dance" wants to kick into gear!

• Managing Unknown Contacts (MUC): A good pool player never has to make a difficult shot. Learn how to neuter efforts to set you up.

TIME TO ENGAGE: TOOLS, TACTICS, TECHNIQUES, AND TRICKERIES

• The KALI FENCE- Mobile and Close Quarter
1: The Arf-ful Dodger frame
2: Initiation and interception from the Kali Fence: specific practical combos to take the initiative in a "Weapon Based Environment"
3: Reaction from the Kali Fence: the DOG CATCHER: The Dog Catcher is our low diagnostic pick up to handle "primal probabilities first". In our opinion, to be able to improve one's odds against a committed knife attack is a pretty good trick! We like the DC because applying it in the adrenal state requires reading only Right or Left, Down or Horizontal; it is the same whether the attack is armed or empty hand; it can handle angry primal power; it disrupts the attack and serves to establish angle to break off or enter to control of the attacking limb; and it sets up a crafty matrix of options from there.

We will be looking at DC to: enable running away, firearm access, and/or knife access; establish weapon arm/hand control into some rather crafty disarms and captures.

Please note that we pride ourselves on our ability to teach to all levels. Whether you are just beginning or are further along, I think you will find this camp fun, fresh, and functional. Please rest assured that though there will be lively force on force exercises, no one will be pushed to go beyond where they want to go.

Post by: Crafty_Dog on January 29, 2012, 09:25:24 AM

If you are going to train for situations in which knives and guns might come into play, then you should be prepared for the wounds that might occur so that you or those you wish to help dies less often before proper medical care takes over.

The Friday morning session will be on trauma care and will be taught by Operation Iraqi Freedom combat medic Kaju Dog, who served with the Marines in Falujah during the height of the action.

Thanks to my recent efforts at the SHOT Show, it looks like we will have trauma kits in time to be available for sale at the Camp.  I just spoke with Kaju Dog and got his approval on the contents of the particular kit in question.  The idea is that if you buy the kit, not only will you have one that you know is good to go, you will have some practice with it under the supervision of Kaju Dog.

Woof All:

Welcome to the 2012 Dog Brothers Martial Arts Winter Camp, February 17-19.

As you already know, the focus of this camp is our “Die Less Often” material, with guest instructor Grandmaster Art Gonzalez of Tenio Decuerdas Eskrima to help us continue to move forward.

LAST MINUTE REGISTRATIONS:

If at all possible please register and pay via the website and bring a copy of the results with you.  If you cannot register in advance, please print the registration form, fill it in and show up WITH CASH.

WHERE:

The Camp will be held at Triton MMA www.tritonmma.com  of Redondo Beach.  For parking we recommend using the parking structure of the hotel immediately to the north.  For seventy five cents you can get your parking ticket validated at the front desk in Gold’s Gym.

Triton’s facility is part of the Gold’s Gym in Redondo Beach.   As you walk in, you will see some stairs ascending to the left.  BEFORE taking them up to Triton please be sure to stop at the front desk and sign Triton/Gold’s liability waiver.
SCHEDULE:

We tend to take a flexible approach to schedules so we can be more responsive to the flow of our time together.   That said:

a)   Each day will be from 10:00-12:30 and 14:00-16:30 (2-4:30pm) with the ninety minutes between the two sessions being for lunch.  Arrive promptly please!!!
b)   Friday morning will be combat medic Kaju Dog on introductory trauma care for the lay civilian.  If you have your own trauma kit, by all means bring it!  If you do not, we will have trauma kits for sale.  Cindy will be there on Friday morning to handle trauma kit purchases.  Cash will be appreciated, checks will be tolerated.
c)   Friday afternoon will focus on MUC (Managing Unknown Contacts): rules of engagement and some legal issues to consider, the four cues of criminal assault, preparing your witnesses, intro to the Kali Fence.  This section will be taught by GM Art and Guro Crafty
d)   Saturday:  GM Art and Guro Crafty
e)   Sunday Morning: GM Art and Guro Crafty
f)   Sunday Afternoon:  Force on Force

WHAT TO BRING:

a)   Forearm protection:  There will be a fair amount of banging of forearms, so some sort of forearm protection is definitely recommended.  Knee and elbow pads would not be amiss.
b)   Headgear:  There will be jostling for head position, so if you want to go vigorously it will be best if at least one person in a training pair has head protection.
c)   Cup, mouthpiece: recommended for those who want to go vigorously
d)   Training knives:  We recommend knifes which show where the edge is and have sufficient rigidity to enable disarms,  If you have drones (a trainer replica of your actual carry knife) they are highly recommended.  Aluminum trainers are fine, but for the more vigorous play we recommend the NOK knives—which will be available for sale.
e)   Training guns:  For safety of the trigger finger, I prefer to have at least one gun where the trigger guard has been removed.   For those of you who carry, obviously a replica of your actual carry gun would be a good idea—along with whatever holster you use for that gun.
f)   Footwear:  We will be on a training mat.  Barefoot or mat-only wrestling shoes are what is allowed.
g)   Clothing.  Of course comfort is relevant, but we suggest that you bring clothing that replicates your street clothing.  For example, in the street blue jeans are my most common pants, so in training I wear blue jean shorts.  This enables me to draw my drones from the same pockets that I would be in the street, to wear the same belt/holster/blue gun that I would be wearing in the street if and when the law allows, etc.
h)   Towels, change of clothes; ideally you should bring a lock for your locker in the dressing room.
i)   Of course, know that there will be the usual “No suing no one for no reason for nothin’ no how no way” liability waiver
j)   If you want to save on Shipping & Handling, please place your orders on the website by Thursday morning—after that we cannot guarantee your order will be processed in time.

I would like to salute the warriors that attended the “Die Less Often” program hosted by Crafty Dog "Marc Denny" .

This man has skills. We work very well together. Everybody was awesome with great energy and willingness to learn.
I was so proud and honored to be  able to present  “Stockton Skills” at beautiful Redondo Beach.  Everybody  was very physical and loving it .  Marc has great teaching ability he needs this because at the end of the  Day. It’s the same motto as Mine.  But can you fight?  You will be put to the test!

I salute the Dog Brothers warrior spirit; it is awesome when professionals meet professionals.

I presented  “The Bad Boy program” which blends with Marc very well. Skills that increase your survival rate when attacked in the street for real with great intend to cause you harm.  We also presented gun disarms and long gun disarms, knife against these weapons. Gun retention, Plus using peoples clothing against them.

GM Arthur Gonzalez

PS. Had a great hotel and they  drove us at night to eat different ethic  foods.  Yummy
PS again :  I have my guys learn CPR skills, but Marc has combat medics that convey  the skills to students to patch themselves up in case they get  shot or stabbed. If time means your life can you survive until you get to the hospital or until the paramedics get to you?  Can you maybe save your friend?

I hope to see you next time
Strength and Honor
