Dog Brothers Euro Gathering of the Pack 2013 Report:

by Lonely Dog & Crafty Dog

For the “Dog Brothers Euro Tribal Gathering 2013” we went to our local "mountain" (actually it's more a big hill) to fight outdoors. It is a beautiful recreational area which is utilised with pleasure from the Bernese on weekends. Fortunately on Friday there weren't that many people there, and we could fight without interference.
It was a beautiful day and after many good fights a number of us hiked down to the campsite.

CRAFTY:  Well, it would certainly qualify as a mountain here in California!  We used a wonderful green meadow that when not used for Dog Brothers Stick Fighting serves as a “Frisbee Golf” field.  As is to be expected at a Tribal Gathering, the level of the fights was consistently strong.  The fights that stand out most for me were the “Whip vs. Whip” fight (dang, Benjamin got good quickly with the whip!) and the “Whip vs. Sarong with Baseball”.  In Crossover Dog’s hands the Sarong with Baseball was shown to be a worthy technology for closing the gap even against Lonely’s ability to keep up a barrage of strikes.  Upon arrival however he learned that the whip can also be used to choke wink

On Saturday was the “Dog Brothers Euro Open Gathering of the Pack”, and what can I say?  It was again a fantastic day full of great fights.

This year we had 50 fighters coming from 12 countries - Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Russia, Scotland, and Switzerland.

Actually it will be tough to recollect the 2 days and hardly possible to relate everything… here some stuff that comes to my mind.

Crossover Dog fought with and against all kinds of weapons, and as usual with plenty of fighting spirit.

C-Thunder Dog and c-Dragon Dog from the Munich clan were sharp and intense as always.

It was good to see c-Hidden Dog well recovered from his knee surgery. also he had a really strong comeback.

With over 50, Lena Dog and c-Spartan Dog were once more an inspiration with their fighting spirit.

C-Mime Dog had an impressive performance I think he fought 9 or 10 times in two days

C-Woods Dog had a nice evolution in his fighting since the last gathering, especially since his "Beasting" it seems that he has changed.

Also “Dog” Ericson changed a lot since the last Gathering, together with his excellent technique we saw also that he used more power and aggression this time. Interesting was also his ambidextrous single stick game.

C-Unidentified Bitch's game is getting better and better, she is switching very smoothly the leads and has a good stick and footwork coordination. Guro Crafty was  especially impressed by her knife work.

CRAFTY: Indeed I am!  It caught my immediate attention as something both distinct and quite efficient.  I asked her about it afterwards and Filippo and she explained to me it was a Sardinian style.  I would add that I have noticed some fine work and evolutions being introduced by those exploring the various European Historical Martial Arts.   As some of you may have noticed I have been pushing for greater use of stick and knife see e.g. http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=2438.0 and I very much like the growth in skill level that I am seeing.  For those so interested in such things it is worth noting that the FMA’ “Long & Short” originated in Italian espada y daga (Guro Inosanto’s name is of Italian origin, not Spanish) Indeed I remember well one night when during class in reponse to something Guro I. said I asked whether that was where the false lead fit in.  “Marc Denny!” Guro I. exclaimed, (Was there surprise in his voice? LOL) “That is a really good question!”  And went to a special bag and pulled out some Italian espada y daga replicas.  He showed us how in E&D the espada was usually about 27 inches long and the daga somewhere between 18 and 21 inches.  In other words, the differential in the length between the two weapons is far less than between the typical 27-30” stick and 5” knife of today’s typical FMA practitioner.  The difference that this makes is when a E&D fighter shifts into false lead is that the tips of his two weapons are roughly equidistant from the adversary.  Guro Inosanto then went on a rampage as only he can do that lastingly changed the way I see things.

Also congratulations to Bettina and Marieke. I'm happy that the female fighters are a fixture of the European Gathering!!

CRAFTY:  All three women are fighting well.

Of course there is a lot more that should be reported… but as I said it’s was a too big a day to relate everything.

After the Gathering it was time for the “Dog Dubbing”.  In consultation with the Dog Brothers there, the following ascensions were unanimously agreed upon:

New full Dog Brothers are:
Benjamin "Thunder Dog" Schlieper
Chris “Rogue Dog” Smith
Daniel “Hidden Dog”  Budar
Filippo “Vegan Dog” Pani
Gerry “Celtic Dog” Casey

New Candidate DB’s are:

and with a big welcome “Wuff, Woof” here the new additions to the Tribe:

a "Beasting" is an initiation tradition taken from the UK Training Groups

the initiate has to fight continuously for multiple rounds, every minute facing a different (and fresh) Dog Brother (aka 'a Beast')

... an because "Lonely Dog" never had his own Beasting, he got one at the last Loreley Training Camp

14  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: DBMA Europe on: June 29, 2013, 12:36:40 PM

... the Beasting is totally voluntary, and is not required to become a GL...

this is the important statement in that whole thing... !

An excited “Wuff, Woof, Wouf, Woef, Bau, Guau”

I’m very pleased to announce the European “Dog Brothers Gathering of the Pack” 2013

The schedule and some informations:

“Gathering of the Pack” 24. August 2013
This will be our 8th “Gathering of the Pack” in Europe. We can be excited to have again an awesome event with fighters all over Europe and further afar.
Audience is welcome.

Schedule / Location:
Saturday 12.00 / Turnhalle Schönau, Lindenauweg 1, 3007 Bern Switzerland

The “Tribal” // 23. August 2013
Members of the tribe (dog, c-dog bro, full dog bro) are welcome to fight already one day before the actual gathering, we will be among us -  means no audience.
The location is undetermined yet, but we will meet at the campsite Eichholz around 12:00

If you want to fight at the Gathering please remember, you have to register and send me the fighters form until 12. August. You only fight if you are registered!
If you have more questions or you want to register please send an e-mail to: lonelydog@dogbrothers.ch

Easiest and best way for accommodation is the campsite in Bern: www.campingeichholz.ch
This is very close to the Gathering location, also it’s a good way to make contact to the other fighters and have fun together while camping together. Considering food there is a supermarket close by, and the camping has kitchen corners to use for free. Additionally has the campsite a restaurant.

Hi everyone!

Since 2008 we had  every year a fantastic Summer Training Camp at the beautiful Loreley (Germany). Each year we had new topics and highlights...

- 2009 was a very intense 7 days! training camp
- 2010 we had 3 days regular Camp followed by 4 days “Tribal” Camp
- 2011 we did 5 days on Double Stick  that included  quite a bit Krabi as well
- 2012 we had the honour to have Eric “Top Dog” as the guest teacher

- and now 2013 we have the privilege to have Guro “Crafty Dog” as the special attraction. He will teach 3 days (8.-10.June) with the topic Kali Tudo, DLO, and Double Stick prior the  training camp from 13.-16.June.

This is a good opportunity to train those aspects of DBMA,
because these are rarely taught in Europe. Don't miss it!

I'm looking forward to have once again a fantastic training camp at the Loreley.

Lonely Dog's Workout 010 – Shrimping

this workout is all about to be mobile while being on your back.
as for the boxer it is crucial to have good head movement, so it is crucial to have good hip movement when fighting from the bottom.

lateral hip movements as shrimping are essential when fighting from your back. those moves are important to escape from dominant positions, and to create space for effective counter attacks.

If you have more questions or you want to register please send an e-mail to: lonelydog@dogbrothers.ch

Easiest and best way for accommodation is the campsite in Bern: www.campingeichholz.ch
This is very close to the Gathering/Seminar location, also it’s a good way to make contact to the other fighters and have fun together while camping together. Considering food there is a supermarket close by, and the camping has kitchen corners to use for free. Besides the campsite has a restaurant.

See you in summer!

Lonely Dog's Workout 005 - Kicking

to be able to train kicking with stick-application, I come up with this modified punching bag...

Lonely Dog's Workout 004 – Agility Ladder

Description:
In the way I approach weapon fighting, footwork is the key skill to develop.
Agility ladder training is a good way to quicken your footwork progression.
It will boost your foot speed, your agility, but also your coordination and smoothness.

voilà... clip number three

Lonely Dog's Workout 003 – Lift and Takedown

Description:
the topic of this workout is strength training in terms to lift your adversary for takedowns.
with techniques as the “High Double” or the “Cameltoe”, exercises for strong legs and explosive hips are key.

here the second clip...

Lonely Dog's Workout 002 – Power training in the River

Description:
This workout is inspired through the one and only  “Surf Dog”. Hitting water is good training and can improve your power. But first and foremost it's a lot of fun, and should therefore not taken to seriously...
I have to admit that we are not doing this too often, the water in Switzerland is just too cold most at the time.  wink

Lonely Dog's Workout 001 – Hitting the Tire

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx4CDgnEhkI&feature=youtu.be

description:
hitting the tire is for the stick fighter as important as it is for a boxer to hit his heavy bag. hitting the tire is good for power and endurance, but it can offer you even more...
with this video i would like to share with you a strategic approach to work on the tire.

“wuff” everybody,

I’m planing on posting a series of specific stick fighting workout clips. Each video will focus on another solo training topic.

In my assessment solo training is an important part of our training. Of course training with a partner is still the most relevant one. But some time we just don’t have a partner to train with, and otherwise has solo training also a lot to offer...

I hope that some of these workouts will give you some new ideas for your training.

I will put every 1 or 2 weeks a new video up on my you tube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/LonelysDen/videos

indeed i like the idea a lot

it would be also interesting what kind of philosophy and/or principle (maxim/motto/ central theme) the different Training Groups have.

Gathering report 2011

other than last year we decided to have this year only a 1 day gathering. The decision was made after I saw that on both days of Euro Gathering 2010 weren't as many fight as hoped-for…
and what an awesome Gathering we had! We had more fights this year in one day then on the two days together last year.

Indeed one of the best gathering we had so far in Europe. 53 fighters from various countries came to fight. We had people from Canada, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Scotland, Slovenia,  Spain and Switzerland.

The registered fighters were:  Benjamin "Lonely Dog" Rittiner, Colin "Point Dog" Stewart, Detlef "Sinatra Dog" Thiem, Heiko "Crossover Dog" Zauske, Ivan "Kuma Dog" Reboli, Oskar "Spider Dog" Bernal, Stefan "Cro Dog" Kostanjevec, Tinu "3D Dog" Blatter, Chris "C-Lazy Dog" Goard, Chris "C-Rogue Dog" Smith, Daniel "C-Hidden Dog" Budar, Jerome "C-Frisbee Dog" Challon, Kai "C-Suicide Dog" Schilling, Lynn "C-Psycho Bitch" Brown, Oli "C-Ghost Dog" Schaer, Peter "C-Grumpy Dog" Fray, Thomas "C-Gong Fu Dog" Holtmann, Thomas "C-Sword Dog" Rickert, Thorsten "C-Lena Dog" Picker, "Dog" Benjamin Schlieper, "Dog" Filippo Pani, "Dog" Ivan Pirozhkov, "Dog" Kai Spintig, "Dog" Kostas Tountas, "Dog" Manfred Schilka, "Dog" Ray Wilson, Alexander Danckert, Andraz Bole, Andy Börngen, Arianna Accorte, Benjamin Salvisberg, Branko Bersa, Christine Martell, Damion Thomas, Ericson Hölzchen, Kostadin Zlatkov, Marco Castrovillari, Martin Helm, Mathias Fürer, Nils Hartmann, Pascal Gilles, Patrick Villing, Pavel Iliev, Peter Moll, Rudolf Pollak, Sanel Ukic, Tim Oliver Dreyer, Theo Goodman, Thore Baumgarten, Timo König, Timo Planke, Tobias Philippi, Ziga Polajnar

I’m very pleased to see that the fighters used such a big range of various weapons this year. We had fights with: stick, double stick, baston y daga, staff, 3-sectional staff, sword, sarong with baseball, mace/flail

There were a lot of great fight! It will be tough to recollect the whole day and hardly possible to relate everything… here some fights that cross my mind.

 -  “Crossover Dog” fought a lot and with the largest range of weapons

 -  Pavel and his convincing ambidextrous single stick game

 -  Our “Bitches”, Lynn, Tine, and Ary had some fantastic fights. Good to see that female fighters are a fixture of the European Gathering!!

 -  Happy to see “Ghost Dog” back in action, he fought well

 -  “c- Gong Fu Dog” had some interesting fights with his 3-sectional staff

 -  Filippo stood out as well, although the smallest fighter that day, did he some excellent fights against often a lot larger guys. Truly he deserved to be elevated to Candidate Dog Brother.

 -  Many German clans were strong as usual: the “Cro Dog” clan, the “c- Hidden Dog” clan, the “c- Lena Dog” clan, the “c-Suicide Dog” clan, and the “c- Old Dog” clan. Good to see that dose groups are developing strong.

Of course there is a lot more that should be reported… but as I said it’s was a too big a day to relate everything.

After the Gathering it was time for the “Dog Dubbing”. But before we turn towards the announcement of the new members of the tribe, there was a matter of big meaning for me.

As many of you know did Abu "c- Desert Dog" Dayyeh passed away this year. He died doing something that meant the world for him. And so the “Council of Elders” decided to elevate him post mortem to full Dog Brother.

After all the fighters gathered for the dog-dubbing “Cro Dog” read a letter he got from Abu’s widow, in which she thanked everybody for the generous donation she got from the Dog Brothers. She mentioned also that she is happy to know that her husband was part of the Dog Brothers and had good friends among us.
...verily emotional moments for many of us.
I’m honoured to announce that Abu Dayyeh is now known as "Desert Dog"!

Announcement of the “Dog Dubbing” Euro Gathering 2011:

New full Dog Brothers are:
Abu " Desert Dog" Dayyeh
Oli "Ghost Dog" Schaer
Jerome "Frisbee Dog" Challon
Peter "Grumpy Dog" Fray
Thomas "Sword Dog" Rickert
Lynn "Psycho Bitch" Brown

New Candidate DBs are:
Benjamin "C- Thunder Dog" Schlieper
Filippo "C- Vegan Dog" Pani
Ivan "C- Dog" Pirozhkov
Kostas "C- Spartan Dog" Tountas
Manfred "C- Cop Dog" Schilka

And with a big welcome “Wuff” here the new additions to the Tribe:
"Dog" Andraz Bole
"Dog" Ericson Hölzchen
"Dog" Nils Hartmann
"Dog" Timo Planke

"Bitch" Arianna Accorte
"Bitch" Christine Martell

Indeed this was a very exciting and successful event, and we all are looking forward with anticipation to the next Euro Gathering in 2012.

no you don’t have to pre-register to attend the seminar/training-camp. Just send me an e-mail to let me know...
as equipment just bring sticks, (maybe some padded ones too), a training knife, some gloves (mma and fma), a pair outdoor shoes, a pair shoes for training indoor (training hall).

Dear members of the Tribe and friends

The autopsy bring out the cause of Abu’s dead. He had a cardiac arrest induced by a congenital heart defect in conjunction with a chronic pulmonary disease and a premeditate flu.

Given above indication, nothing on earth could have rescued him or could have provided any chance to survive.

Torben “C-Old Dog”, Stefan “Cro Dog” and myself had the chance to get in contact with Abu’s widow. It was a good to have the opportunity to give our condolence directly to her. It was also a big relief to hear, that she found it comfortingly to know in what circumstances Abu had to pass away. She was glad to hear that he was surrounded by people he liked  and practicing his precious stickfighting.

I was touched by her fortitude.

I was glad to see how big the resonance was and how many people from the DB community gave their condolence.

It was wonderful to see how many people are willing to donate, in order to decrease the financial pressure to the family.

We will get in contact with Abu’s widow by end of march to convey the collected donation.

If you wish to donate please do so until 25. march. You have 2 possibilities:

1. Through Stefan “Cro Dog” paypal account, Stefan.Kostanjevec@googlemail.com

2. Torben “C-Old Dog” banc account, please get in contact with me (lonelydog@dogbrothers.ch)  and I will give you personally his banc account details.

Thanks

Wuff
