C-Mightydog,
i'm in highland, i havent trained in a while. would love to get together somethime and train. i've been to a few gatherings and a couple of DBMA seminars, just been really busy with work. weekends work great, i can host at the Redlands Training Center on sundays if you'd like. We mainly train judo, no-gi and kickboxing. rcriojas@gmail.com

To Michael, GM and Crafty,
Haven't been around for awhile gents but saw threads on lower back issues. Seems my lower back was a little sore last week during training. Warmed up for good workout this Monday and during drills, went to pick an ankle and felt all kinds of pain in lower back. I couldn't even finish move. Felt like I started the motion and just felt sharp twinge. Had my wife rub it a little and to check for any deformities. She said she may feel a slight impression along spinal column where pain is located. Moving around yesterday at work and felt a slight release when I rotated my hips around, with some popping noises. Should I be concerned? Other than what feels like muscle pain, and limited motion that's getting better, there's no weird feelings like numbness or electricity.

Grateful that California state hospital inspectors have given us a date for final inspection. I have been through this before. I've seen my current project with opening a outpatient clinic, ongoing since October 2009. Planning, construction, equipment move-in, fire marshalls, revisions, marketing, physician presentations. . . almost there. should be open first week of June.

you might want to research Todd and Trevor Laly from Arizona Combat Sports. I remember them using the "superman" back in the late 90's early 2k's. some people think they were the innovators that punch, bringing it over to MMA with all their Muay Thai background.

i'm finally thankful for being able to treat my first patient in a new clinic for Eisenhower Medical Center. starting from scratch, we built the four treatment room clinic, plus two monoplace Hyperbaric Chamber Room from the ground up. so many obstacles i thought we were never gonna open. to top it off State inspectors kept delaying final walk through. well. . . up and running, and i do mean running. from 0 patients to 16 + daily census. what a relief.

AZCS is an awesome mma gym to work out at. is Gustavo Dantas still apart of that team?

that . . . was . . . TOTALLY AWESOME!!! i've never seen a clothesline uppercut-hook. decleated Faber. but it's what has been mentioned before. there's always somebody better than you out there. not to take away from Faber but athleticism and tenacity will only get you so far. too much of that seems desperate.
9  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: What would you like to see from DBMA? on: November 08, 2008, 09:16:46 AM
stick grappling, bladed weapons
10  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: MMA Thread on: October 25, 2008, 06:19:08 PM
MAIJA - thats pretty interesting! i seen Lyoto do that before but not extensively like he uses it. seems pretty second nature to him. hmmm, something new to start practicing...
11  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: MMA Thread on: October 06, 2008, 10:24:39 AM
i think Jonobos has it dead on. . .  even though Kimbo has added a good MMA coach in Bas to his repetoire doesn't mean he can run through a cage with his chin exposed daring someone to hit it. cause in this case, someone did and now it's all history. MMA is what it is. we've all seen it a million times. the best train for years and they're on top for a long time. they beat the best and lose to unknowns with a good jab to the chin. Kimbo can't deny it, Liddell can't deny it, Tito . . . etc...

it can all be related to the Gatherings. it's humbling to know AND recognize that there is always someone better than you.

Arlovski fought "Big Country," product of John Lewis BJJ/ Nova Uniao. he was on top with the I.F.L., even has his own clothing line; 108 Martial Arts. Big Country looked heavy and sloppy

i'm grateful for my wife not stepping on a 5 ft rattler during our run this afternoon. just about to step and had to jump mid stride. i think it was just sunning itself, it didn't even react until we double backed to check it out. amazing

17  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / open mat session at UC Riverside (Ca.) Sunday/ 5-1-08 on: May 26, 2008, 09:53:58 PM
last sunday we thru this together last minute. turned out great. we rolled for about an hour, practiced throws and rolled some more. there were judokas, jits'ers and yes... wrestlers. put it back out thru the students from the class. sunday open mats sound good. non students pay a nominal $5 to the student rec center and we have the mat room until you just can't roll anymore, or everyone has left. probably no stickwork but i could work it out if anybody wanted to work a specific art. mainly just judo, jiujits, kickboxing and wrestling. any takers? . . . come one come all
18  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: sean sherk vs. bj penn on: May 26, 2008, 09:47:01 PM
i agree w/ foxmarten, Baby J will be out of weight class. he did well when he was up there but GSP is a monster on top right now. asking to step up against Rush is like my kids asking to spar with me.
19  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: sean sherk vs. bj penn on: May 24, 2008, 10:21:31 AM
didn't Sherk appeal and fail subsequent tests to the limit that his suspension had to stand? maybe that's why we havent seen him for awhile . . . his suspension is over, not overturned, so now he can fight again.

WHO wrestlers are. At least those that compete at a high level.

the only place you can learn wreslting is in a competitve enviorment, so the pool of athletes is limited to those who are most serious about the sport.
Mr Guthrie, you've just described all competitive combat sports in general. . .  not like any fighter has ever had to cut weight hours before a tourney; boxing, wrestling, judo, jiujits, sambo . . .  workout after workout, suicide drills and Bull in the Ring, constant dieting, trash bag suits and shaving your head at the scale- coach holding a towel so the stat girls dont get too excited. i've done it all, and teach it. i'm just saying . . .

we could argue this until the next big fight. i'm just glad GSP made a fool of Serra. but not because the BJJ'er could wrestle. one man prevailed and prevailed in dominating fashion.

so i guess we're back to square one around here, old UFC rules. one style against another and not blended well rounded fighters. lets call Caille Sanderson(?) to a gathering and see what he could do? . . .

be careful wrestlers, i know you like ur singlets and all (pretty snazzy) i might just feed you my lead leg. your shoot better be clean and lightning quick, cuz if it seemed to easy . . . you'll look up and see a sniper scope smile, "Gotcha!"

23  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: At UFC 83 in Montreal on: April 21, 2008, 11:15:26 PM
Guro Crafty i'm a little shocked right now.  shocked you would disavow one art for anther, even being a Machado practitioner? i agree, you resort to what you know best. but if you train multilateraly like BJJ- MuayThai or Chute Boxe then your covering all your bases from the beginning. but to say to better your game you should stay with your base style and add "wrestling" doesn't mean you're any better at one than the other. that would mean that two BJJ guys fought saturday and that the guy that "shot" faster won. No Way! you're taking away GSP's athletic ability to adapt and just totally run that big mouth Serra into the ground.

Anderson Silva, Minatauro, and Wand all train out of the same gym - Chute Boxe Academy. an academy that trains all those styles together.

Travis Lutter was doing pretty good until he got his bell rung. i bet Rich's arm is pretty sore this week after being twisted into a pretzel.

Mea Cupla,  Mea Culpa
24  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: Telescopic Batons on: April 04, 2008, 09:41:53 AM
yeah my first stikes were usually pressure ponit hammer fists with my finger on the tip to keep it from opening to soon. the key is to give it a good snap upon presentation. a bit pschological too, almost like the sound of a shotgun rack
25  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: Telescopic Batons on: April 03, 2008, 11:46:18 PM
unless ur l.e.o. or security u need a c.c.w.. more or less just a short stick. don't try to jab with the tip, it'll collapse on u. if you do, brace with the off hand and drive on a downward angle

i agree and both disagree, after awhile you'll be able to pick apart anyones game. but thats the thing about DBMA, you use what works for you and get rid of what doesn't.

29  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: MMA Thread on: March 21, 2008, 08:41:16 PM
Serra is a fluke. he's a typical New Yawka with an attitude like Renzo. loud mouth and all. and Drago walks his same shoes. when push comes to shove, he don't got the stuff.
30  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: Need an opinion on: March 19, 2008, 08:35:55 PM
i'd line up too for those guys in a minute! but i'd keep my distance from Fedor for as long as i could. he's got a great sambo background. and i'd just pound D. Maul and take his double light saber.
31  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: MMA Thread on: February 20, 2008, 09:47:05 PM
c'mon guys, Yves Edwards has been around for a long, long time. give him some credit granted he's been a wanderer but he's with Top Team. now Edson, i've never heard . . .

what about a match up between Kimbo and Chieck . . .

36  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: Ninja Babies on: February 05, 2008, 11:08:55 PM
my training for the kiddies is . . .  usually having them somersault over medicine balls. the smaller ones really get the form down, as they can barely reach over and touch the mat, learning roll falls. they just think they're rolling over the balls. or . . . standing, i have them sweep a small rag across the floor with thier feet, learning foot sweeps. with the gi, i have one child pull another across the mat, all the while a third stands behind, holding the pulled childs belt. this helps strengthen/quicken kazush. they just think they're playing tug-o-war.
37  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: Judo = Hurts on: February 04, 2008, 11:12:45 PM
missed your call Maxx, have a ton of patients.

you should always start your workouts with UKEMI (the art of falling)drills. roll falls, somersaults, cart wheels, slap the mat from all elevations. slap with an open palm, forearm to fingers. never try to brace your fall , you'll just end up breaking your wrist or dislocating your elbow. most injuries occur by trying to stop an already moving object (you, for instance). the idea is to address an already disadvantaged position and transition to a better vantage point while reducing the risk of injury or to lessen the impact all together.

whats the duration of the training. my kids get a little unfocused after about half-an-hour, fortyfive minutes
39  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: Judo = Hurts on: February 04, 2008, 12:01:49 AM
there really is no difference between Judo and BJJ. classic japanese jiu jitsu spawned Judo. but being that it was a refined SPORT, older students of Judo often reverted back to the more martial Jiu Jitsu. so when Judo was at the end of the their world tour for promoting the sport, the top Judoka settled in Brazil and taught the Gracie family "jiu jitsu." the rest is history . . .

there's a long standing feud, or discussion . . . which is better Judo or Jiu Jitsu?

well... we could argue the chicken or the egg story forever. Judo is more stand up, and explosive . . . an international Olympic sport, as was its intention by Professor Jigoro Kano. everybody likes a good takedown or monster throw. BJJ is refined mat work. a little more macho and aggressive like the Brazilians themselves. you see similarities in both sports because they are eachother. is sambo any different? not really. what about pancrase? that's an even older sport. any similarities to judo - jiu jitsu, of course. what about roman greco wrestling?

so if you've never had the opportunity to learn Judo, just think of the transition from stand up to ground work. nobody wants to go to the ground, so take your opponent there first. strike, when they clinch, throw. now that they're on their back, choke and lock.
you might want to check out Goltz Judo in Claremont. they're fairly close to you. and there's is a competition style dojo in West Covina, i have to ask my buddy for the name.

41  DBMA Martial Arts Forum / Martial Arts Topics / Re: The Nat Geo Documentary on the Dog Brothers: Fight Club on: January 23, 2008, 11:29:31 PM
just watched the episode in full . . . mixed feelings here

one side thinks "Totally f@!3?*g AWESOME!" i've either met, fought or know every single focused on by the show.

and the other side, . . .  how come you can only see a part of my shorts in most clips. (just joking) and the women fighters fought just as hard.(for those who were there that day) i was proud of my wife having stepped up and competed.

Wardog looked awesome, thanx for the chance to have rolled with C-Scotty Dog . . .

the attention is good but will it draw a different crowd now with the new found exposure? what's the ultimate goal of this documentary for DBMA and the tribe?

what about newer/other MMA fighters or martial artists of the current generation who are in movies. i just seen "Judo" Gene Lebell on the Sarah Connors Chronicles. both Randy Couture and Gokor have been on the greatest show of all time, The Unit. and Tito is now a guest of the donald.

Cat Linda- Gina is going to be unavailable to "play" this Gathering, i have a business trip in Vegas that weekend and we're gonna take advantage of the location and roll with some friends @ Cobra kai. she even thinks she's gonna get me into a chapel.

Maxx - don't get cold feet brother. Half the battle is just showing up.

Good luck to all fighters, have fun, Gina and i will be watching posts to read about the days events.
