Today I am grateful for the help I've recieved from my senior student Ozzie. He meets me at the park before class to work on our conditioning despite the fact that I need it more than him. Nothing quite like a 150 lb, sinewy, fast as greased lighting, never tiring, younger than you by 10 years , super enthusiastic training partner to keep you motivated. Really I am grateful for my whole training group each which gives me so much in their own unique ways. Tony Torre Miami Arnis Group www.miamiarnisgroup.com

Maija, It seemed to me that all the upper body targeting done by both parties where below the neck towards the upper chest. In one exchange in the middle of the fight blacks head is out of the frame. There you'll see the targeting of the upper chest pretty clearly. Early in the fight red made an attack to blacks leg. It fell short. It was either a fake or just lacked commitment. In fact several swipes fell short. This is probably due to fear of the counter cut. Blacks final cut showed definite commitment. I believe had the leg shot made contact it would have changed the momentum of the fight. By possibly limiting blacks mobility or maybe causing him to crane forward exposing his face to attacks. Black made several horizontal slashes towards reds upper body. The big one where he back pedaled was chest level just above the nipples. I think he(black) could have just as easily targeted the face. In the final exchange red got stuck in too low of a stance. He just wasn't in a good position to side step. Had he been more mobile he could have side stepped and thrust toward the face. I believe thrusting to the face after blacks horizontal swipes may have made a difference. I still think they where purposely avoiding face shots. This may may be an initiation ritual or a matter of honor. It seems like it was to the first definitive cut due to the lack of a finishing move after the big cut. They may be avoiding the face to avoid being too obvious to the authorities We will never know for sure. Regardless it seems both guys had some idea of what they where doing. I wonder if there werent some rules to this fight. I noticed no attacks to the face. The taller fighter had many opportunities to thrust at his opponents face. Also there was no follow up once there was a clear winner. In a shanking style attack it's usually to kill ones opponent. This was clearly a duel. To monday morning quarter back it I think reds biggest mistake was getting caught flat footed and unable to use his footwork to avoid blacks attack. Black clearly was more aggresive. Red used some fakes and did some back pedaling ultimately getting caught while deepening his stance. I think reds lack of commitment was his downfall. Crafty, Not sure what your exact goal is but I know Paladin Press put out a book called Knife Fighting Techniques From Folsom Prison by Don Pentecoste. In it there are some illustrations describing techniques similar to the sewing machine attack. There are also a ton of machete attacks on youtube. If this is also useful to you let me know and I'll fish around and post them. Tony Torre Miami Arnis Group www.miamiarnisgroup.com

Here's some important info I cut and pasted from an e-mail It only takes a minute to read this... A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke... totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. Th e stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S * Ask the individual to SMILE. T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) ( i.e. It is sunny out today) R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 999/911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.. New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue..If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke. A cardio logist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved. Tony Torre Miami Arnis Group www.miamiarnisgroup.com

Today I'm grateful for the wonderful support structures I have in my life. My boss who's patience, generosity and kindness are an example to live by. My students who show me how much the care in the nicest ways. My wife who's never ceases to amaze me. My son who's little smile cheers me up even when I'm in the foulest of moods. Okay, So lets re-work this thread into a how, when and why we might use a knife for practical self defense. I carry two knives usually. A spyderco endura for general use and a cold steel vaquero grande for more "serious" applications. I find them light and easy to carry. They've become part of my daily attire.
