Hello Casey,

for a beginner i think the first 3 tapes of the first series should be enough to start your training. After that you can buy tape 3-5 from the second series and the 4-5 tape from the first series.

But for completly understand what Dog Brothers Martial Arts is and for a supported training you should visit some DBMA seminars or join to a DBMA group near by you.

What makes a grandmaster? (A quotation from PG Edgar Sulite)

To be recognized as a Grandmaster or Master of combat arts in the Philippines, you must have made your reputation and show mental maturity and physical age. Grandmasters question the rankings of other grandmasters.

Masters and grandmasters are criticized and questioned regarding their skills and abilities. Who bestowed their title? Do they have enough skills for the titles they carry? How many years have they been practicing the art? How old is he? How many followers and students does this man have?

In other martial arts, the attainment of a certain level automatically designates the title Master or Grandmaster. In the Philippines, there are certain norms to be satisfied before one can be called and accepted as a Master or Grandmaster.

A master of the art must be a master of himself. He must be in control. His daily life epitomizes a man in control of his life, his destiny. A master of the art must know his art, its origins, its history, its philosophy. He must know the techniques, the interplay of techniques, and the reversals of techniques.

A master must know the basics, the intermediate forms and techniques, and the advance levels of the art. Mastery of the art does not only mean so many years in the art, but the amount of experience using the art, one's personal evolution within the art and personal dedication and contribution to the art.

A master of the art must know how to teach and impart knowledge from the art. He must be able to communicate, elaborate and present the art in such a way that each student learns on a personal basis. Each instruction is adapted to the learning process and ability of the student. A master must be a real maestro, a real teacher.

A master of the art must be of good character. He should epitomize the qualities of a leader, the majesty of a noble, and the courage and strength of a warrior.

A master of the art is called and acknowledged a Master by other masters, never by himself.

I don't think it's important to be the best one or to be remained. To be successful in future it doesn't need to investigate a new style. It's enough to look for new tactics and strategies. Sometimes it is also necessarily to be returned to the basis techniques. (Caveman or else..)

Hi Rafael,

my deepest conviction is, it is not important what you practice, it's more important how you practice it. I'm sure there are many good and many bad intentions in Krav Maga. Same with Wing Chun, Kapap Lotar or the simple western boxing. The most important thing is your training with intention to sharp your simpliest weapons.
Another good attribute is to test your skills and techniques in real full contact like the Dog Brother's at there gatherings.

my Muay Thai, Muay Boran and krabi krabong teacher, Kru Guido Reimann knows Phanom Yeeram (Star actor in Ong Bak) and he speaks very highly from him. His skill is very high and he's the thai version of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee.

In some martial arts, like jeet kune do, you first train your good side. Because if you can sharpen your best weapon like your right hand, its more important as be a rookie with boths hands. In the early years, when i began with stickfighting like pekiti tirsia or lameco escrima i do the same. At first i develope my strongest weapon.

The Los triques sinawali is a great concept what shares the concepts of krabi krabong an filipino kali. I was wondering how martial krabi krabong can be, because i never seen it in full contact aspects.

something forgotten. The type of the sticks should be rattan. Rattan hurts, but don't break your bones like ironwood or else.

For Lameco Training my favorites are my both kamagong sticks, but i never use them in partnerdrills or laban laro.

You also can purchase rattan and trainingdaggers from me if you want.

Hi Phil,

the most people have there own favorite length and weigth. That can be 60cm to 75cm length and different weigths. Diameter can be 2cm to 4cm. The thinner one is good to perform and practicing moves and techniques on lower level and the thicker one is good for practicing powerstriking.

My recommendation is to buy rattan in the length of 270cm and cut it yourself. Internet-Shops are often to much expensive. I bought my rattan at a company who makes furniture with rattan like sofas, seats and more.
You can save 80 percent and more by this way.

In germany you found some good fma teachers with a good skill but the skill from the other teachers is very low. You must have a lot of luck to find a good teacher. But: "Have sticks, will travel!"

Currently i practicing lameco and pekiti tirsia. But i'm very open and look to other systems, too.

For upgrade my empty hand and grappling skill i'm practicing jkd, jkd grappling and some kind of free fight. (CSW from Sensei Erik Paulson)

The author of this book only discribe dirty knife fighting tricks. There's no filipino martial arts background. Many prisoners can show you same tricks and moves. I don't like that book, theres no art, no philosophy.

My good friend guido will come with me to a gathering in year 2004 and he is 41 years old. He practice muay thai and krabi krabong very well for many years and he didn't feel to old. Why should you feel to old?

i had a special questions about the lameco techniques in the dbma. I never visit a gathering, but i watch the dog brothers since many years. Next year i plan to visit the gathering of the pack and will be happy to get some answers before.

Salty Dog and Crafty Dog trained a lot with Punong Guro Edgar Sulite and i know that everybody get showed techniques to fight against the other one. So here is my question:

How small or big is the part of lameco in the system of dog brothers martial arts? I often seen footworking like retirada illustrissimo and some of the laban laro sections.
Which standing did PG Edgar Sulite's analytical thinking in stickfighting have in the development of the Dog Brothers Martial Arts System?
