Grateful for work easing a bit so i'm not "On" 110% of the time and can catch up on some forums, starting with this thread

Double coincidence. Last night I took four hours of class at a little martial arts school by the marina, and then went home and did 90 minutes of yoga. Got to bed late, but I feel great!

I guess I'm grateful to feel good this morning after staying up way too late working out.

Grateful for my oldest daughter having passed the entrance exam some months ago to one of the top 40 high schools in the US as ranked by US News & World Report.

Grateful that today she has a chance to interview at that school.

Grateful to be in a graduate program with two amazing people who are in my smaller regional study group. Both of these amazing people are defending their doctoral dissertations today, but I can only attend one of the two defenses in the afternoon.

I sent just sent the following messages to these folks, and I did "borrow" some DBMA lingo for one of the messages. The first is for the defense I cannot attend:

Quote
I don't know if this will find you after you are informally "Doctor" today, but even if it does, I still would like to express my best wishes for what I know will be a successful defense this morning. I am so pleased to have been in our learning group with you, and to have you as a partner in academia, and as a mentor.

It's always nice to have someone who has gone through it before you, and done it well, and I mean life. When I write something like that, I don't mean to be insulting. By biological reality, you are older than I am (I'm not calling you "old" however). You've been there; you have full-grown kids, and you and your wife and now reaping all of the benefits of having worked really hard for the past few decades. I hope I'm conveying this correctly; I can sense you are a good person, a good husband, and a good father, and I have always enjoyed talking with you about the challenge of balancing all of what life has to offer. You are very much a mentor to me in that way, in a culture that has sadly abandoned mentorhood.

So, I truly get to mean it when I write the following: I'm very pleased to know you.

Again, I don't like the word "defense" for what you are going to do today. You are sharing your research with the academic community, nothing more. You will do amazingly well, and I wish I could be there.

The second is for the one I will attend, and this individual is a bit more nervous than the first, even though she is more than ready:

Quote
I know I'm going to see you there, but I just wanted to start your day off with some good thoughts.

I'm very grateful to have you in my life as a fellow scholar, and more importantly as a friend. Your goodness as a person is apparent the moment anyone comes into contact with you. You deserve to be finished, and to get to attend the last meetings of our cohort as "Doctor", even if that's an informal title until the summer.

I wrote the same thing I'm about to write to (Recipient 1): I don't like the word "defense" for what you are doing later, because there is nothing offensive about the people you are speaking with today. You are sharing your research with the academic community, of which you are getting ready to become a leader in your particular area of scholarship, nothing more. You are doing it in front of a number of people who care about you, and want you to succeed. Just try to enjoy it. Like all things in life that take a lot of build up, it will be over before you know it. Stay present, and enjoy this day.

I'll see you later,

Bryan

Truly ecstatically grateful that i found something i thought lost forever... in a moment of inspiration, i checked a jacket i didn't wear in ages and sure enough it was there!

Grateful for the feeling that finding something lost, like finding money, gives me also.

At the high school at which I teach, state testing is upon us. While I am not grateful for having the sum total of everything that goes on during the academic year reduced to a three digit number that is the end-all, be-all measure of the school's worth as far as the state is concerned, I am grateful for a few days of proctoring, which is really about creating an environment in which the kids feel safe, and can do their best.

I have no problem with keeping educators accountable, or having the students demonstrate what they know, but, just as an example, a major trend in professional development for educators is differentiation, or the ability of teachers to adapt the educational experience to the different needs of each student. So, I need to personally adapt the educational experience for each student in a system that judges schools solely on an instrument that assumes students are all the same? My students that have only been in the country for a few years, and my special education students are expected to perform as well on the exam as say the future valedictorian, or the school will be put into program improvement? Something is wrong. I'm also grateful to be able to speak, or write about the absurdities in public education without getting upset, or feeling a spike in my blood pressure, like when I started teaching.

I'm also grateful work in a really nice school, and to really enjoy my interaction with students, regardless of test scores (even though our scores are through the roof).

I'm very grateful I passed the last of my tests today and I have officially  signed the paperwork for my new job.

It has been long few months but I really excited about my new job.   I feel like I did when I graduated college--  I still can't wrap my head around the fact that all the "studying"  is over.

woof Rachel:

I'm very grateful I passed the last of my tests today and I have officially  signed the paperwork for my new job.

It has been long few months but I really excited about my new job.   I feel like I did when I graduated college--  I still can't wrap my head around the fact that all the "studying"  is over.

belated congrats!

grateful that Rachel's 'studying' is over and landing the new job!

Grateful for my oldest daughter having passed the entrance exam some months ago to one of the top 40 high schools in the US as ranked by US News & World Report.

Grateful that today she has a chance to interview at that school.

Good luck to your daughter, Stickgrappler. Let us all know when she is accepted.

woof GD et al,

ack! daughter is too shy... apparently the "interview" was looking at group dynamics and how she would participate in group, and not 1-on-1 with teacher asking her q's... her shyness could've been her downfall. she was not accepted.

grateful for the rejection from that HS in giving my daughter focus on what to work on!

SG,

Not to make lemonade out of lemons, but at least this way you're receiving that feedback at the high school level, and it will not hold your daughter back from her favorite college, or her dream job.

Grateful for some blank days in my planner.

For my inversion table...   T-spine pinched nerve this morning while holding my son.  Luckily I was close to the bed and let him go safely.

Heat, stretch, hang upside down and try to work it out...  still in lot of pain but I am alive so all is well. :x

Grateful for a good first presentation of a lesson that I will be repeating in all of my classes today. I teach 11th and 12th grade English, and we are closing out the school year with a unit on the Hero's Journey. Today in class, my students are listening to me speak about my experience with Dog Brothers, and how it fits into Campbell's 17 steps. I am presenting my sticks, my gear, and I have been able to fit 16 out of the 17 steps into my experience. The first presentation went well.

4 more to go!

Grateful that California state hospital inspectors have given us a date for final inspection. I have been through this before. I've seen my current project with opening a outpatient clinic, ongoing since October 2009. Planning, construction, equipment move-in, fire marshalls, revisions, marketing, physician presentations. . . almost there. should be open first week of June.
