Dear Winter Vacation,

You arrived today with the wind at your back. LOTS and LOTS of wind. I am grateful for you.

Merry Christmas to everyone so inclined to accept that as an offering of peace, love and friendship.  I am grateful to be alive and to have family healthy and together for this tradition and celebration.  I am grateful for the Catholic Church for welcoming me in as a non-member with their celebration of positive messages: Joy to the World, Glory to God in the Highest, peace be with you, forgive those who trespass against us, and Hark the Herald Angels sing.  The music to me brings a beauty and emotion bursting with the pride of having my daughter and other family members among the musicians contributing to this important celebration for so many people.  The lights of Christmas help to illuminate what would otherwise be the darkest days of the year.

I am always wiped out by the time we reach this space between X-mas/Hanukkah and New Year's. My wife likes BIG New Year's Eve plans; I don't care. I don't need a day/season to get me moving on projects.

Grateful for low-key New Year's Eve plans with which my wife seems satisfied.

How about a prayer for super skier Sarah Burke, ESPY award winner for best female action sports athlete, who is in a coma after a training accident  yesterday.  Her talent and charm on display in this ESPN interview a few days ago:

And we are glad to have you back.

On a very separate note, it appears our family cat "the Schnoo" has reached the end of her days.  She has been showered with great love by all of us.  She may be gone before I return home.  All of us, most certainly including me, are grateful to have had this wonderful kitty in our life.

I am grateful for an afternoon well spent with some dedicated scholar warriors and for the possibility of good things to come for the country ... and for a personal endeavor.

Prayers for the people in Harrisburg, IL which is about 40 miles from where we live.  A tornado struck there Wednesday, killing 6 and injuring 100.  Severe weather coming through again today, we were under a tornado watch, but it seems to have been downgraded to a wind advisory.

Makes me appreciate the class Kaju Dog did on trauma care at camp.

I'm a high school teacher, so I measure years in terms of the academic calendar.

The 2011-2012, year has gone much differently for me than I predicted it would. I'm profoundly grateful for it (even though it's not quite over) but it's been a challenging year, filled with a lot of growth.

I have been off the grid for a little while in terms of the forums. I may be gone for a little while longer still, but I am not leaving for good. I hope everyone had a good April.

Poi,

I missed all of you, too. This has been a major teaching period in my life since September. My own training has suffered a bit. I am taking steps to correct that.

Had I planned to fight, my wife had a minor medical matter this weekend (she's fine) that would have kept me home both days anyway. Sorry for the Governator quote, but I'll be back.

GD

Today, I'm grateful to be involved with DBMA.
