Looking for fighters for stickfighting TV series
« on: November 08, 2008, 08:49:40 PM »

Woof All:

My name is Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny.  Some of you may know me as "the Guiding
Force" of "the Dog Brothers" and/or the Head Instructor of Dog Brothers
Martial Arts. www.dogbrothers.com .  Today I speak as Dog Brothers Inc.

I have been asked by a well established Producer with a good track record in
doing athletically oriented television series for major networks to help
develop a television show based upon stick and other weaponry fights, so I
am looking for fighters.  For the right men, this could be a very special
opportunity to build a career doing something you love.

For now I need to leave out the actual concept for the show.  Know that it
will be interesting and quite distinctive from shows like The Ultimate
Fighter, Fight Quest, and others of their ilk.  Trust me-- we will be
outside the box in many ways!

Although much of the fighting will be similar to our "Dog Brother Real
Contact Stickfighting" (see the fight clips at
http://www.dogbrothers.com/pages/multimedia.html to get an idea) because
these fights will be professional there will be some important differences.

If you would like to be considered, we need to see the following-- all
submissions become the property of Dog Brothers Inc.:

1) a one page resume.  The resume should include the following:
    a) age, height, weight, citizenship, languages, website/mypage/etc. if
any,
    b) martial arts background: systems, styles, teachers, fighting
experience, competitive athletic background etc.
    c) contact info

2) Photos:  a) Head Shot
                 b) Full Body shot.  Not to worry if you are not body
beautiful.

3) The ideal candidate will be capable in as many of the following areas as
possible, but it is understood that no one will be capable in all areas.
Demonstrate as many or as few of the following as you wish.  Know that if
you suck at it, you are better leaving it out altogether!

   a) Double stick
   b) Single stick
   c) Staff
   d) knife
   e) emptyhand skills: MMA or otherwise
   f) gun skills (pistol, rifle, paintball)
   g) other (e.g. sword and shield, whip, nunchaku, fencing, etc)
   h) footage that indicates your strength and conditioning level.

These skills should be presented both solo and against a partner/opponent.
If you have fight footage please include it. MAKE CLEAR WHICH FIGHTER IS YOU
(e.g. title on screen "I am fighter in blue shorts")

ATTENTION:  It is easy to develop a bit of diarrhea of the ego in assembling
such a demo disc.  KNOW THAT the people who will be watching this (e.g. me)
are well seasoned in these things and do not need to see a lot to size up
your movement and skills.  While some flash is fine (indeed it helps sell on
TV) remember that we are looking for fighters.

Know that if you run on too long, you run the chance of the viewer just
deciding to click on to the next candidate.   Remember, we will be looking
at a lot of these.  While the footage need not be shot professionally, it
should be easy to watch and hear.

4) Talk to the camera:  head/upper body shot, with good clear audio.   We
want to get a sense of why you do martial arts,  what your philosophy is,
why you want to do this, something interesting about yourself etc.  We want
to get a sense of your personality, so JUST BE YOURSELF.
Unconventional/colorful is OK.  So too is conventional/serious.  JUST BE
YOURSELF.

Please send your resume and Demo Reel/Disc to

Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny

Hmmm, , , how about this:  You put together your resume and the rest of your demo reel, send it in, and if I think you have a shot at it and you are willing to pay my editor for the time it takes him to find your fight, then the answer is yes.

This sure seems exciting and challenging... contemplating, not that I think I will be chosen but I have other things to weigh out IF chosen.

Hey,Crafty   I see, for this project you are searching for fighters outside of the DB's group . I am sure you will receive many resumes/demos,  as this is an intriguing prospect for any stick fighter looking for a special challenge. I think about the National Geo Gathering and the trials and tribulations I was going through at that time in my life and how the gathering was a place I could gain a sense of strength and courage by immersing myself in a difficult struggle      (ie the gathering) and cultivating that feeling and mindset, to apply in the upcoming life events/struggles I still had to face at that time. I feel I have gained allot through the generosity of your group and will always feel indebted to you for that. Wishing you great luck with this current project and looking forward to seeing the fruit it bares. Sounds very interesting.     Dog Tom S.      PS.  If you ever find the need for a token chux player?

Dog Tom's question about the token chux player brings to my attention something I should make clear:

Fighters do not need to be proficient in all categories; e.g. even if all you want to do is fight single stick, you should apply.  An apllication from fighters unusually skilled in in particulary weapons (e.g. Dog Tom and nunchaku) will be particulary welcome.

Will there be a significant training component to the show? I know a few high-level WMA players, and while they don't have stick experience, are very handy with a variety of western weapons. The german material stresses commonality of motion as well, so given a short acclimation time I feel confident that an ARMA scholar or similar could perform under pressure here.

Will sex be a limiting factor here? The person i'm trying to convince to send in a resume is a NAGA champ, has Muay Thai fights against Kaitlin Young, and is an ARMA scholar- she will beat %99 of people in her weight class senseless, of either gender.

Just a quick yip before turning to some other matters:

I had someone ask about nationalities.  OF COURSE all nationalities are welcome.  Already on board on Lonely Dog (Switzerland) and Red Dog (Germany).

Could we get a little more info about the time commitment? Just curious, would it be more than two weeks, a month, or more?

Thank you Guro,

I need to be vague on the vision for the show at the moment and how much money is involved.  That is the way it must be for now.  Once we see who we have, "the story will tell itself"(tm) and we will know which of visions we have for the show will be the right one, and you will have a chance to decide if it is right for you.

Although much of the fighting will be similar to our "Dog Brother Real Contact Stickfighting" (see the fight clips at

something that has never been seen before.

This does NOT mean it will be more dangerous or more painful , , , necessarily ;-)

As I write this in Mid-November 2008, we are looking at a time frame of several months.

Those selected first will be part of the pilot and the rest will be brought on stream as things move forward.   IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR BECOMING A PART OF THIS, well, 90% of Life is showing up.  We need to see the following
from you:

1) a one page RESUME.  The resume should include the following:
    a) age, height, weight, citizenship, languages, website/mypage/etc. if any,
    b) martial arts background: systems, styles, teachers, fighting experience, competitive athletic background etc.
    c) contact info

2) Photos:
   a) Head Shot
   b) Full Body shot.  Not to worry if you are not body beautiful.

3) DEMO REEL:  The Demo Reel should have two sections.

   A: The PHYSICAL section:

Please demonstrate fight skills with your preferred weapons.  Ideally this will be both solo (we'd like to see the nature of your movement) AND with/against others.  Of course, we are more interested in the latter.

If you don't have/have access to your fight footage, please state briefly and clearly what your fight experience is (and isn't).  Simple honesty, no puffery please.  Remember, the bullshit that gets you in the door also gets you out the door.

These are the possible areas of interest to us.

   a) Double stick
   b) Single stick
   c) Staff
   d) knife
   e) emptyhand skills: MMA or otherwise
   f) gun skills (pistol, rifle, or paintball)
   g) other (e.g. sword and shield, whip, nunchaku, fencing, etc)
   h) footage that indicates your athleticism, your strength and
conditioning level, etc..

Total running time no more than FIVE MINUTES:

B: A PERSONALITY SECTION.  This section is optional.  Maximum time: Three minutes.  Note that a good one minute is better than three minutes of chatter.  Please simply talk to the camera about why you do what you do, where you could picture something like this fitting in your life, and so forth.  JUST BE YOURSELF.  Conventional and off-beat are good, so too are funny and serious, and crude and cosmic!   JUST BE YOURSELF!

Crafty,  Due to circumstances beyond my control,  I am sorry to say that I will not be able to submit my application within the time frame you have requested.   I am sure the pool of fighters you will have to choose from will be more than sufficient to meet your needs.  That is not to say that I would not make myself available to you in the very near future if  you found you needed someone with my particular skills. (By Default)
In either case,  I will  be able to submit my resume in two weeks or so as I will be able to gain access to to my equipment in order to produce a disc to go along with my resume.  I would imagine that you may be looking for younger, stronger, more durable and possibly more charismatic individuals than myself.  With that said,  I would just add that if you did see a spot somewhere that I might fit in,  I would consider it an honor and a privilege (as always) to fight in the true spirit of the Dog Brothers tribe.  Good luck to you and all involved in this projet.  Sincerely,   Dog Tom S.

Woof All:

The production company is busy at the moment launching another show, so with the holidays and all that I feel safe in saying that we have until late January for the Resume/Demo Reels.  What follows is a rewrite of the "invitation to application".  There are some important changes in it, so please read it carefully.  Please spread it around suitable locations on the internet and elsewhere.

I need to be vague on the vision for the show at the moment and how much money is involved.  That is the way it must be for now, but know that I have spoken clearly with the producers with regard to the fighters being properly taken care of both financially and in terms of the rules and believe that they have the correct mindset in this regard.

Once we see who we have, "the story will tell itself"(tm) and we will know which of visions we have for the show will be the right one, and it is then that you will have a chance to decide if it is right for you.  In other words, by applying now you are not committing yourself if the final concept turns out later to be not right for you.

Although much of the fighting will be similar to our "Dog Brother Real Contact Stickfighting" (see the fight clips at
http://www.dogbrothers.com/pages/multimedia.html to get an idea) know that the fighting here will be , , , well, it will be
something that has never been seen before.  This does NOT mean it will be more dangerous or more painful than Dog Brothers fighting.  I am quite conscious that the Dog Brothers code of "One rule only: Be friends at the end of the day" may not be reliable in this context and have ideas about how to go about things so that we do not unduly risk the fighters.  Dog Brothers Real Contact Stickfighting is quite dangerous enough as it is!

As I write this in mid-December 2008, we are looking at a time frame of months before we begin shooting.

Those selected first will be part of the pilot and the rest will be brought on stream as things move forward.   IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR BECOMING A PART OF THIS, well, 90% of Life is showing up.  We need to see the following

2) Photos:
   a) Head Shot
   b) Full Body shot, withor without shirt.  Not to worry if you are not body beautiful.

3) DEMO REEL:   This is your chance to show us what you can do.  Here are some suggestions:

a) Fight the camera with your weapon(s) of choice
b) Traditional martial arts movements/forms/etc
c) Demonstrate on an "opponent"
d) Fight footage if you have any.   We understand that you might not have access to your fight footage.  Please state briefly, clearly, and HONESTLY what your fight experience is-- no puffery please.  Remember, the BS that gets you in the door also gets you out of the door.  If you have fought at a Dog Brothers Gathering of the Pack, please list which Gatherings in which you fought.  IT WILL BE VERY HELPFUL IS YOU CAN DESCRIBE WHAT YOU WORE SO WE CAN FIND YOUR FIGHTS MORE READILY.

these are the possible areas of interest to us.

   a) Double stick
   b) Single stick
   c) Staff
   d) knife
   e) emptyhand skills: MMA or otherwise
   f) gun skills (pistol, rifle, or paintball)
   g) other (e.g. sword and shield, whip, nunchaku, fencing, etc)
   h) footage that indicates your athleticism, your strength and
conditioning level, etc..

Total running time of this material should be no more than FOUR MINUTES and for most people will be quite a bit less than that.

4) PERSONALITY SECTION.  This section is optional.  Maximum time: Two minutes.  Note that a good one minute is better than two minutes of chatter.  Please simply talk to the camera about why you do what you do, where you could picture something like this fitting in your life, and so forth.  JUST BE YOURSELF.  Conventional and off-beat are good, so too are funny and serious, and crude and cosmic!   JUST BE YOURSELF!

I hope the DVD part of the resume works OK. It worked OK in one of my DVD players but not so good in one of my other players. Quality not to good either
(tech problems with burner) although, it has info. labeled on disk that will make it quite easy to pull up one of my fights on "A Gathering Of ThePack" DVD. Also forgot to mention that I have firearm exp.

I know my chances may not be great but, at this time in my life, certain circumstances have arisen that have left me free as a bird to do anything I want, whenever I want. It is a huge turning point in my life and just the thought of doing this is making me feel more alive than I have felt in the past year or more, so thank you for that. Anyway sorry for rambling on. BTW I have been spreading the word in certain circles, about your need for interested fighters to send resumes to you.  Wishing you and yours all the best!
Sincerely,  Dog Tom

Woof,

I did not see any reply button available on my thread so i jumped up here, lol
Thank you Crafty,  :-D Yes I did see this thread and was thinking this tv show might be something more along the lines  of "fight quest" or something like that. if this project you are starting is what i have been getting wind of then it sounds exciting and I am looking forward to seeing it.

Oooh I still have time? Sweet.
I had given up because of computer issues, I didn't get the laptop I wanted so I beefed up my current machine.
Going to get some training in with DogZilla tomorrow.  Maybe I can get something on tape.

Folks:

Please stop asking when the deadline is.  There isn't one.   90% of life is showing up.  The sooner you get it in, the better for you.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm in a snarky mood today!

I am going to add you to my Face Book favorite quotes. Right up there with the Dali Lama, Yogi Berra and Jim Morrison. "90% of life is showing up". Thats classic!   8-)

Honesty compels me to mention that I think it originally was Woody Allen.  Not one of my favorite people (indeed as the epitome of the whiny neurotic cowardly little d*cked jew I loathe him) but with this one he nailed it.

BTW, you have PM.

Woof All:

We have selected the fighters for the pilot shoot, which shall take place soon.   Those of you who dawdled getting your demo reels in , , , well, you snooze, you lose.

Our producers feel confident we will get approval, in which case the next step will be to choose fighters for the show.  So if you want to be amongst those considered, well, "Tomorrow is promised to no one"-- time to get your demo reel/resume in!

The Adventure continues!

Sounds like you are assuming the show will be "TUF with sticks".  While that certainly is one of the ideas under consideration, there are  , , , others. :-D

I was thinking it would be like a Contender: FMA type show since you asked about knives and guns, but whatever it is I am sold already. As soon as there is swag available let us know I will purchase a shirt for sure. (as long as it is black)  :-D Also I am hoping it is sold to channel I have on my cable system!

I know that I'm interested as is my instructor, GM Anthony Kleeman and potentially the Eskrimadors over at HOC.
I'm just getting to the game a little late....

Sounds like it could be a good thing and I wonder if either or our schools could server a purpose for shooting.

"HOC"?

We'd be delighted to receive a resume/demo reel from GM Anthony-- please give him my regards-- and from you.

The pilot will be shot in the first week of April.  At the very least you have at least until then, and probably a bit more, but do try to get you resume/reel in by then.
