is there a lot that can be missed in FMA by primarily training only things which can be applied in sparring?
I love the Summer gathering for one reason only, it means that I only have to wait four months for the next one, and it's here all ready. If you plan on being there drop your name on the thread.
I may do a fight single stick with shield, anyone interested?

What ever happened to the good old day's when you get into a school yard fight and the teacher breaks it up, slaps you on the hand and sends you back to class and you might even start building a friendship with the the person you were fighting with. DT
Not wanting to be picky, but as an old school Judoka... tatami are the reed mats. But it is also the brand name of olympic style Judo mats, just hoping to avoid confussion (I've been bitten by this before ).

With DB Gatherings part of the charm is that there are "No judges, no referees, no trophies"-- so part of me is leery of being pulled into such a function.

so how do you train it alongside the idea that you probably will not......?
standing in front of someone holding a live blade, knife, machete, katana, pinute, whatever, and i can tell you that my first impulse is not to run at them, taking a few cuts on the way in as i go for the strike/take down.
