I'm not exactly sure which one I will be able to attend but I definitely plan on attending a gathering, Im leaning towards the September gathering.
Looking forward to getting back out there.
-
Power House Gym was a great location for the last public Gathering... I look forward to seeing it there again.
any more news on the April Private event???
There is a corral here on base we might be able to use in the future... The ground is softer here also, mainly due to the large amount of Horse poop...LOL
I'll keep checking the other thread for April.
My med bag is good to go for that already  :-D
-
We are confirmed!
====================
This is to confirm the date September 20th, 2009 for the Dog Brother's
Gathering of the Pack at Powerhouse Gym in Burbank. If this date is a
problem, please let us know asap. Last year's event was a success,
and we're looking to build on that positive momentum. Thanks!

I agree.
It was a "different" venue, but then again we were fighting in horse crap a few months before.
 ...You know what, I LOVE the Powerhouse Gym.
-
I would love to give it a shot. I'll be back home then :-D
-
Outstanding. 8-) We'll be here for you.

 ...You know what, I LOVE the Powerhouse Gym.
My mask and gloves are still stained, . . . poop color. I also remember going back to the hotel one night, going into my office, wiping my rear end and getting more horse poo than my own. Good times.
-
I have a few prospects (one in particular) that will have a lot to offer in empty hand and weapons skills.
He will probably make his debut at the September gathering.
-
Guau to all :-)
Excelent, my students (Javier, Iván, Toño and Ramses) and I we training for the Gathering. We from México city.

Toronto?
Where in Toronto, I'm in Hamilton and haven't found anyone at all interested in stickfighting, (well some were interested until it came time to actually do it....).
-- More info please?
-
I don't mean to jinx it but this one seems like it's gonna be big! 8-)
-
Is Kendo gear allowed?
-
The protective gear?
No. Its too sturdy.
-
There is quite a group forming in Toronto. Rene Cocolo has brought Crafty up a couple of times and he has some guys trying it out. Also Tyler Morin, A Pekiti Tirsia instructor, has been to a couple of gatherings and DBMA seminars has hooked up with Rene. He will probably answer your question directly. We have a gathering-like event here in Montreal every once in a while that they come up to.
All is possible, even in Canada.
Sled Dog
-
For the record, Tyler is also a DBMA Group Leader/Trainer and has trained with me privately in Switzerland as well as in the US.
I greatly enjoy the group that comes when Dog Rene hosts me and look forward to the next time.
-
Thanks for the help, now I guess I'm waiting on hearing from one of the people in and around Toronto for more info.
-
Thanks for the clarification, Crafty. I am inclined to understate when I am not sure of the information.

I'll be there. Last time I only fought with knives because I was there by myself and didn't want to get injured that far from home all alone. This time I'll try to do something with sticks or some other weapons.

Justing bringing this to the top.
Sept 20th will be here before you know it. If you plan on fighting at this one, please get your "Fighter Registration Form" in.
http://dogbrothers.com/pages/gathering.html (http://dogbrothers.com/pages/gathering.html)
Im looking forward to setting up some fights early. Last time at Power House it was a huge turn out with lots of fighters. I hope to get in at least 10 fights this time.
I already have a cane match set with Dog Rene
I want to also call out anyone that wishes to go against double sticks, staff and of course "Shock Knife". I would also like to defend with double stick against staff.
Let the chatter begin... :-D
Woof - Woof!!
-
great idea Kaju
all i need to do is find a cane :-D the broken one is mounted on my office wall ( would like to see the pic of that fight actually)
i owe Papy a fight
and id like to give Pound Dog and Cyborg a shot

I plan on coming and fighting @ the "Gathering" Sept 20th. This will be my first one. I've been a long time fan of DBMA. I'm comin from Portland, Oregon. Is there anyone else from Portland coming down? On the day of, how earlier should one get there? Also, how is fighting order decided? I understand that you pick your own fights but I was just wondering if people have back to back fights or what?
Thanks,
Ryan
-
last year i came really early yo help set up this help to settle the chattter a bit
as for picking fights walk up say hi and ask, if you have good cardio you can go back to back i saw pound do it but my first time it took me
some time to regain my breath from my first match my not just from the fight but also from the nerves
-
I smell the fear in the air... It's time to get your Fighter Registration in so that the real "Chatter" can begin.
*I know with EURO Gathering and the Canadian summer camp that this is on the back burner a bit.... Just bringing this to the top to keep it fresh.
I am hearing a slight chatter in the distance and feeling excited for this one. (Fairly Local for me = I can go!)
PS
Dog Rene, keep working that cane.
Respectfully,
KD 8-)

An entire triaxle of firewood to cut, split and stack by the time I leave. I estimate it to be around 8 cords.
-
I like it!!!
Coincidentally enough I did a bit of hitting the tires with a sledgehammer today.
-
I got pretty good at hitting the tire over the past year however I was promptly reminded how much different splitting wood is. When you get half way through a log it no longer makes sense to pull the ax back out. Instead, logic tells me to lift not only the ax but the ax with the log still attached and then try to split it . . . . Not sure it's the best way but definitely makes for a very interesting workout when you have no clue how many times you're actually going to swing the ax.

I have a request for all dogs. C-dogs, DB's, and newbies fighting on the 20th:
I am currently entering into my third year of coursework to earn my Doctor of Education degree from the University of La Verne. I will be in a weekend-long seminar from 8-5 on Saturday, September 19th, and September 20th. I am a full DB with a fair amount of momentum in my participation in the Gatherings, and the thought of missing one saddens me. I will be in La Verne on the 20th. I am going to try and get permission to head out to Burbank at about 11:30. I will have until about 1:30 to play and then I need to drive back and finish the seminar.
What I am humbly asking (with Guro Crafty's permission) is if I might move up to the front of the fighter's line with my partner a few times during that window with the understanding that I am not cutting? If the general consensus is, "Life's tough; get a helmet", I will understand, but of you all would be willing to help me out, I would be very appreciative.
Thank You,
GD (Bryan)
WOOF,
I admire your commitment and dedication.
What a silly question :-P of course we mind   In fact, we'll fight you for it... :-o

Hi all,
Marc/Crafty suggested I hit the forum, so I thought I'd make a quick intro with perhaps a few questions.
First off, I'm planning to attend the Gathering in September -- which is both exciting and daunting. This will be uncharted territory for me, and I really appreciate that a venue like this exists. I imagine it will be a challenge getting things dialed in at first, but hopefully I'll find appropriate matches. If anyone fancies a fight with someone fairly green (maybe another newb -- or someone who just likes easy pickin's) I'll probably be a bit dazed and disoriented, so I'll extend my willingness to give it a shot here -- while I'm not quite so shy.
I probably have a number of tedious questions, but the only one that's leaping to mind now relates to footwear. Are sneakers about the right caliber for this sort of thing?
I've met up with Marc a few times -- and watched some videos -- so I've got a general picture of what to expect; but I don't have a great sense for some of the tedious pragmatics like those. So, if anyone can think back on their first time and wants to offer any advice -- of whatever kind, I'd be happy to hear it. I'm looking forward to this -- not only for the 'realism' of it, but for the inspiring notion that this can be accomplished in a way that still leads to being 'friends at the end of the day'. It will be good to make some new friends soon.
Thanks,
Chhi'mèd

Yo (which is "woof" in phillyese). My plans are to fly from Philly to the gathering on either Fri the 18th or Sat the 19th. There are probably some others flying out from the Eastern US and thought that we may be able to coordinate all or part of the flights to hang out on the way. I mean I could imagine a few of us even being on the same flights and not even knowing it. So I dunno how to even start this but if anyone flying wants to send me a direct message of their flight plans I can see what I get and then try to get people hooked up either on the same flights or even meeting during some lay overs. I personally haven't booked my flight yet but have to do so within a couple of days anyways. So, if you are flying out send me your itinerary and I'll try to figure out if there are common flights among us and communicate that among travelers. I'll also post this on the "Members" board.
Also.... any "suggested" hotel accommodations? Places where a bunch of people may be staying?

Hey Howie,
Those of us flying out of Pa are all in the same group. I am pretty sure we are all on the same flight. We are flying directly out of State College and I don't know much more than that as I was not the one that booked the tickets. As for our hotel I think we looked at several options, but I don't think we booked anything definite yet. I will pass the message along to our fearless leader tomorrow before training though.
Jon
edit - I am also curious if our fighter registrations forms were received as the "list of registered fighters" does not show our names. I would hate to get all the way out there and only be able to watch. If I am going through the trouble of battling the chatter I might as well swing some sticks right?
-
Cindy tells me she has a number of fighter names to post in the cue.
-
Hello all,
I had a question on sticks and was directed to this thread. I'm coming down for the first time to fight in the Gathering and I made myself some sticks from wooden dowels. I'm only using hardwood because it's so cheap. You can't beat 3.00 a stick! My question is can/should I fight w/them? I have no problem @ all getting Rattan sticks it's just that hardwood is so cheap. I know hardwood splinters easy so my sticks are taped all the way up and down w/electrical tape w/about 3 layers on them.
Thanks,
Ryan

Thanks pappydog. Do you know if there is any specific place where out of towners that come for the gathering congregate? IF not, I'll just spin the wheel and try one out. - Howie
-
RyanA:
A) I suspect that the hardwood sticks have a greater propensity to break bones
B) How much have you tested what happens when striking full force? Does the taping you describe prevent the broken-off piece from going flying when you have two adrenalized men going full force?
@All:
Howie brings up a good idea-- that of having a congregating place the night before. When the Gatherings were held in Hermosa Beach, this was easy for me to organize, but now that they are in Burbank that is not the case. Does anyone have any suggestions?
-
RyanA:

------------------------------
A) Sorry I didn't think of the breaking bones part. Again, I was just going for the cheap factor. I'll order my Rattan stick today.
B) I've hit bags, Bob training dummys, ironwood against the hardwood and hardwood vs hardwood. Plus, I have my training partners hit me w/the hardwood but I know they're not hitting me 100%. Hitting all those things they stand up of course those are all soft things to hit.
Tapping the sticks help a lot. My training parters and I have hit hardwood sticks as hard as we can together and I've never had one break off and go flying. Hitting an ironwood stick vs hardwood I've never had one break. I tape my sticks very well because I want them to last as long as possible and so usually if there is a violent break the tape holds it on and one person is just standing there with a sad looking stick. Some of the smaller hardwood sticks like 3/4 diameter I've had just make a clean break.

Fighters,
I tore my right bicep earlier this week. Thank God it was just the muscle and wasn't the tendon however, the Doctor said that the next weak link to go would be the tendon the torn muscle is attached to. He is having me do physical therapy for the next 3 weeks and wants me to hold off for a month until I use it for anything strenuous.
With that said, I'm looking for experienced fighters to potentially go against me (left handed), you can be either hand and honor a no clinch or grappling rule.
Please feel free to email me or post back if you're interested: ryangruhn@hotmail.com

"Hello, im a fencer, and i want to test my swordsmanship in a gathering but i am unsure how a fencer would be able to compete and adapt in a gathering since my weapon of choice is basically something that would poke at my opponent causing little to no damage. is there a weapon you would suggest i use that could keep me still using my fencing technique? or is there someway to adapt a fencing saber to be more useful at a gathering?"
Great question-- lets see if we can find a solution!

Great question and interesting thought. I have often mentioned in my classes that a good improvised weapon of opportunity is a car antenna. I have also had kids train with the plastic rods that turn the window blinds open and closed. Wont kill, but will sting like hell and hopefully present a moment of distraction to allow for other tactics.
Maybe a car antenna would be a good/realistic substitute for the saber. I would be willing to whip an antenna around with someone.

Various witticisms cross my mind in this moment, but thanks to hard earned wisdom, I will decline to express them

What a coincidence! The registered fighters list has just been updated!
I'm not seeing Iron Dog, Cyborg Dog, Boo Dog, Tennessee Dog up there. Remember, EVERYONE, TRIBE OR NOT, NEEDS TO REGISTER. Fax is an option here people.
Iron Dog-- Cindy says that she hasn't been to the mail box in a few days, so if your registration would have come in during the last few days, it might be at the mail box.

Hello All,
I'll be attending/fighting in the Gathering for the first time also and you like to have my first fights be w/fellow new comers just to get some of the nerves settled :|. If anyone would like to fight please feel free to message me. I look forward to meeting everyone. Chhi'med and I have scheduled a fight.

Sneakers will be fine.

What if we made you a stick that was pointy. Not sharp but pointy? Please add Monty Python joke here... Seriously that might give those thrusts more meaning

What are fencing sabers like? Is there an issue with penetration of the skin?
-
What are fencing sabers like? Is there an issue with penetration of the skin?
Are we talking sabers or those flimsy little foils? I think the real issue would be that the foil would not cause significant damage. It has 0 deterrent value.
-
The following fighter forms were picked up at the mail box today:
a) Ivaylo Penev
b) Devin Wilkey
c) Guide Dog-- at the moment it appears he will be unable to fight, but we leave his name on the list anyway
d) Iron Dog- welcome back!

Cyborg Dog's registration just came in electronically.

I may have missed it but I could find anything in a search so ...
I got some hockey gloves... they are padded on the top and the palm and finger areas a like a regular fabric glove. They have wrist support. How can I determine if they are OK to use at a gathering?

Just bring them and we will let you know. If they are too heavy you should not have a problem borrowing a pair.
-
Will there be dvd's and/or sticks for sale @ the Gathering? I was interested in getting some of the dvds and one of my instructors wanted me to pick up some of the actionflex stiff sticks for him while I was down there. Also how much is it for spectators?
Thanks,
Ryan
-
$10 for spectators and yes we will have our stuff for sale.
Kyle Kabala's fighter form has arrived.

c) Guide Dog-- at the moment it appears he will be unable to fight, but we leave his name on the list anyway
I have an all-day seminar for graduate school on the 20th, and I didn't receive word that I wouldn't be allowed to leave for a few hours from my professors until a few days ago. This is the first Gathering I've had to miss since I started fighting with DBMA, and I'm very bummed. Good luck to all the fighters, and remember: when in doubt, agree to more fights!
-
We'll miss you Guide Dog.

JONOBUS: excellent advise.

My friend and DBMA representative in Mexico City, Mexico is coming to this his second Gathering. Making the trip is a real stretch for him financially. Is there someone who can put him on a sofa/floor/gym mat etc? He arrives Thursday. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I read this earlier and have been trying to come up with a way to help. As you know, my home is a 3 hr drive away. I am more than happy to bring my air mattress and loan a sleeping bag and or tent if it will help. I have the camper shell on my truck but I may need it myself if too broken to drive home that night.
Wishing there was more I could do. I am open to suggestions and can loan supplies if it helps.
If there is a place to pitch the tent, Id even be willing to sleep over in my camper next to the tent for Sunday night. :| 8-)

   OK, so far I have Dog Rene (cane fight) and Dog Ryan (left handed stick fight).
Anyone else got some fights lined up yet... Only a couple weeks to go!
Im looking for a "Shock Knife" fight, a Double stick, and a Staff fight...
Keep in mind I may not be able to fight alot of fights but will do my best, until the knees or back have taken too much.
Gentlemen,
LET THE CHATTER BEGIN
Newbies welcome... I am slow and physically challenged but will give you a good run for your money and dont hold a grudge. Dogs Honor!
Dog Rene = Cane
Dog Ryan = (L) Single stick
Howie from Philly = Whateva
Jon (Jonobos) = Double stick
This is what I have lined up so far... I must be honest, I would like to open myself up to a fight or two with the unknown. I'll bring my wepon(s) of choice and you bring yours. IE. I step onto the mat with my single stick and hidden knife and meet my opponent with whatever he/she wants to bring onto the mat. No preset "Duel".
Anymore takers?? I am hoping to last at least for a few more.

An absolutely awesome day.
Lets hear it people!

Great day. It felt like all the fighters had each others back and there was very little ego. good fights, great learning opportunity, about as much fun as you can have while getting hit with a stick. :-D
-
I want to thank Crafty and all the Dog Brothers for making an event like this possible. Also, thanks to Howie and Ryan -- the newbies fighting newbies; none of us knew quite what to expect, and it was nice that we could figure it out with each other. I also appreciate the other Ryan asking me for the left-handed fight: it was good to get one more in, but I wouldn't have had the nerve to ask anyone more experienced. The whole event had a great feeling of mutual benefit, and that made it easy to move past the nerves and dive in. Altogether, a great experience for me. Thanks again.

I had a great experience. I would like to thank Guro Crafty for coming up to me, making me feel welcome and telling me the Dog Brothers parable. I want to thank Kyle, Chhi med and John for great fights. I couldn't believe the comradery and good spirits between the fighters. I look forward to coming to both Gatherings next year and look forward to a fight w/Kaju Dog. Thank you so much for this event.

Big thanks to Guro Crafty for the Gathering. A big thanks and howl the NoHo krew... my teacher Pappy Dog.
Peter - thanks for the single stick fight. next time I'll be more aware of my OWN KNIFE! doh'
Linda - thanks for the right glove.
Mauricio - Thanks the knife fight and the single stick fight. You first hit me on my left wrist. I instantly pulled it back but quickly thought to myself "can't let him know he hurt me" and returned my wrist to its normal position. You then hit my right wrist even harder! I never felt that particular pain. I grunted (or maybe yelled in pain lol) and like a dope stared at my wrist. It wasn't until you yelled with your stick up in the air and Crafty paused the fight momentarily to ask me " are you okay? do you want to continue?" i said "yes" and we began to fight. Then you hit me on my head, my left knee buckled, and i wobbled. In my heart i wanted to fight but my body was done. Crafty had to come over, he stopped the fight... pulled me aside and said " your done... no more fights for you today buddy..." - awesome
Thanks for the humbling experience. I have a whole lot more training to do.
-BrianA
Guro Crafty - I have pictures from my friends camera. Unfortunately the camera was on the wrong setting and needless to say i have a whole lot of blurry fighters. There are some that are salvageable tho' . I'll see what i can do on photoshop. it will take me awhile but I'll email them to you as soon as I get them done.

The feeling is mutual Ryan. Thanks for the great fight, and I hope we run into each other again!
Thanks Kaju for the Double Stick fight! They always get my heart pumping.
And if you could Crafty, please pass my best wishes along to Mauricio.
I will be decompressing and trying to put everything I learned into play for the rest of my life no doubt.

What a great weekend.
Guro, thanks for allowing us to train with you Saturday and putting on the Gathering of the Pack!
Thanks to the North Hollywood gang for allowing us to train with you and helping us out with polishing up some techniques!
Rene and Howie, thanks for the laughs, almost getting us into a fight (NOT AT THE GATHERING) within the first 60 minutes of being in the state of California and for being so hospitable!
Tennessee Dog, thanks for the fight! I'll be honest, my goal was not to turn down a fight regardless of who asked me as long as I was healthy. I don't think I would have had the balls to ask you myself so I thank you for helping me jump into the deep end!
Kaju Dog, thanks for agreeing on doing a left handed fight. I felt like a newbie again in stick range and it was invigorating!
"Bitch" Linda, you do a great job at killing skinny lanky guys! Thanks for the fight!
Chhi’med, you were my "unknown" fight that I promised myself I'd have. I had no clue what I was getting into and man was I impressed. I felt like I was hitting a brick wall each time we entered clinch and your left handed stick power was as imposing as your right! Thanks for agreeing to fight me left handed!
Lastly, thank you to my friends and fellow training partners "Dog" Mike and Jon. The two of you are huge inspirations to me.
Woof!

Even though I don't fight any more, for me too there is still the post-Gathering altered space.
This Gathering was a deeply satisfying one for me on many levels. The strength and spirit of our Tribe is strong. I now feel support in putting on the Gathering from so many people -- props in particular to Pappy Dog and his buddy Eric the Trainer, Kaju Dog and so many more-- that I did not feel so much sometimes in the past.
For me the day is a blur: watching someone who has struggled fiercely with his chatter finally step through the portal; feeling the vibrations of the altered states produced by the silence of a stick buzzing by your head; and so much more , , ,
What a magical trip this is!

Gathering attendees:
I'm working on a modest art project/experiment and need any images you have of x-rays (really need these) and/ or close up pictures illustrating injuries received at the Sept 20th gathering. I could use a number of images because I want to develop a collage. If you have anything that I can use I would appreciate it (personally identifiable parts of any images will be edited out). Please email images or give me links to them of you have uploaded them already. Feel free to reply to this post with links, or PM to me. Alternately you can email images directly to me at hmandel{att}learningByGrace[d][ot] oh are gee (email address is reformatted to limit access to discussion board bots). Thanks for your assistance. (note: this is for a personal project, not commercial in any way and with full respect to and compliance with DBMA, Inc. proprietary rights. CD- if you see any conflict please let me know and I'll defer to your preferences)

Personal project? No problem. Thanks for asking.

Woof Howie,
I've got a few photos of my hand, the x-ray and a pretty nice stick hickey. I'll let you know once I post them or I'll email you the copies.
Aloha, Poi

Has the highlight clip of the Gathering been scrapped?

Funny you should bring that up. Night Owl sent me a clip for my approval yesterday-- which I gave. NO is now sending it to our webmaster who will post in on the site here.

Just to repeat what I posted on the members boards: That was some of the hardest fighting I've seen at a public Gathering in some time. Congrats all!
