I am still in need of someone to fight shocknife vs. stick (me being stick as I haven't been the stick player in this type of match up yet).  Please email me if you are interested: sifu@titanfitness.com.

on one level i'm fairly scared/stressed

Correction, you are excited!  :-D  Just a few minutes ago I got that adrenal rush simply from looking at the pictures from Gints of the June Gathering.  My heart started pumping, I felt the release of adrenaline into my body, I started to breathe a little heavier and said to myself "here we go again!"  Does anyone else get this feeling prior to a Gathering?

"When I'm training and I don't feel like fighting ... I don't."

I think this can be on several different levels as well.  You might mentally be up for fighting but physically your body is telling you to reconsider.  Similarly you may have trained your butt off and in the best shape of your life but if your mind is telling you not to step on the mat.  Lastly if you "want" to fight but one of the other two variables are in the way.  I have personally experienced not being physically ready to fight, not being mentally prepared to fight and also not wanting to fight.  Each time I have fought and regretted it.

"Am I the only one who strays off the path?"

Not at all.  The last BJJ tournament I did I was totally out of it, shouldn't have competed but decided to anyways.  It was so weird, I wasn't nervous, didn't really care if I won or lost and on top of that, wasn't too concerned that I weighed in at the bottom of the weight class (which was one class up from what I usually wrestle at).  No warm up before my first match because I was too busy helping everyone else out, coaching, timing, all while I was video taping.  So I got out there on the mat, still no nerves, played my game and got out pointed.  It was almost like I was looking for a way out, didn't want to wrestle again.  IMHO I think this could be pretty dangerous during a gathering!  I hope this never happens to me again.

Regarding Knife Rules:

I really admire Crafty in the past few gatherings that I have been to for immediately recognizing kills.  With that said, I think the first rule of the knife fights is to respect the training blade as if it was a real one.  This usually leads to less clinch and grappling however if you are suave enough to be able to pick your empty hand shots and grapple with the guy who has the knife and not get killed, go for it.

Crafty, would it be possible to observe the "walking dead-man" this time around and give the person who has been pumped a few times the ability to at least try and kill the person who just killed them before the fight is stopped?  Say 15 second continuation rule after it has been an obvious kill?

Dan,
Could you please expound upon the go go palata variation?  I am familiar with Bravo's block of material, understand the position well, but what do you mean by using the stick to "pull" the guy's neck into the shin?  Do you mean putting the stick across the back of their neck?  Very interested and looking forward to your response.

The first thing I ALWAYS look for over everything regarding ground work and self defense is weapon/hand control.  "Position over Submission" still holds true but being weapon centric and looking for limb control is key.  In most of my fights that have gone to the ground I have used my Guard to neutralize the weapon yielding limb.  Be it knife or stick, the weapon is always #1 for me.  I really like Crafty's block of material for Guard.  I can't wait to see this stuff in the Kali Tudo ground DVD.

Has Jeff Qual approved the use of Shockknife on Shocknife?  Will it short the knife out in any way?

Gints,
I feel the shocknives rather well through a shirt.  So much so that I couldn't tell the difference.  I think no gloves should be mandatory.  I didn't wear any when I did Shocknife vs. EH or cattle prod vs. cattle prod and I strongly advise not using them (Tom, I can still remember where you hit me with the cattle prod on the left hand!).

Hey Dan!
Regrettably, I will not be making this Gathering. :|  I do however have some ideas that I think would lend well to the fights and the over all aesthetics of the environment.  The idea of a wall is perfect but putting a large garage door in the middle of the wall would be killer!  To help sell you on the idea, imagine it to be an awesome way to open a scene:

(garage door opens) - fighters inside ready to fight . . . .
(garage doog closes) - fights begin.

side-note:  Every gathering I have been to this really adds to the concept.  Kind of like shutting the octagon door at UFC.  Once the door is closed, the fights begin and there is no turning back.

Not to mention how much of an effect it has when people go crashing into it!  Sticks smacking it, etc.  I think this has been some of the biggest crowed pleaser in previous gatherings that I have attended.

The second thought that I had was that the gathering for the Reality Show Promo had the view of over top which was really cool.  Is there any way to give spectators the same type of angle?  Maybe rafters or scaffolding?

Emmett,

Good question  :-)  Any type of saw will do, just make sure you secure the stick properly before cutting it.  I use a miter saw to cut my sticks.  It allows me to clamp it down securely first.  Another option is to let your six year old use normal size sticks.   8-)  I teach Youth Martial Arts and this is what we do.  At first the length can be a little awkward but I have found that they tend to adapt quickly to the length.  Food for thought!

Does anyone think that Bruce Lee might have had an influence on how many people think about "dead patterns" and drills?:

Quote
"All fixed set patterns are incapable of adaptability or pliability. The truth is outside of all fixed patterns."

Are people misunderstanding Lee when they read this and his whole mentality of being formless?  Did Lee mean something else?  Yes rhetorical but I thought I should bring this point up!

Thoughts?

By the looks of the 24/7 series I was really looking forward to a top quality show so we did spend the $55    I think this might have been boxings last chance to capture back a young spectator audience.  With the commentators being of the older generation, most hard to understand, not making sense, etc. it was really hard for us to get into it.  Not to mention HBO's classic look that made it feel like we were watching a fight from 1982.  I dunno, I might be sounding a little harsh but I callz 'em like I seez 'em!

Here is my insight :-D :

1.  I assume you mean the traditional Higot Hubud Lubud drills.  In this case I would strongly recommend Guro I.'s FMA series.  I would have to go take a look to see which ones focus on empty hand.  On the other hand, Kali Tudo does do a kinds of "counter for counter" drill where Guro Jeff & Guro Lonely go back and forth trading techniques that are taught.  I can't express enough how helpful this part of the DVD is for me.  While not traditional it does use many entries and such similar to hubud drills while working the application.

2.  Guro I.'s

3.  ehhhhemmm, www.Durattan.com  :-D  It feels weird to say, but I have yet to have a complaint or return.  For some people Durattan doesn't match up to rattan, for others they have switched entirely to Durattan.  For myself I don't think anything will ever replace natural rattan and I find myself using both Durattan and rattan.  In regards to the cold steel version I read that they are made out of polypropylene which we found was entirely too hard on the joints (the sticks really seemed to vibrate a lot).  We also liked to have choices in sizes and not be limited to one diameter.  Because of this, Durattan came up with its own patented polymer blend that acts more like rattan and multiple diameters and sizes.  I'll  get off my soap box now.

YES!  Jen's seems to have a good idea of the footwork as he was yelling "circle, circle!" but I agree that Andy should have at least understood the outside footwork.  I was commenting to my girlfriend as we watched it; "it seems like some of the material we work is still a big secret to a lot of pro fighters and coaches."  This is really one of the only explanations for it not coming out as much.

Unconventional in that he resorted to very tight boxing technique, I guess people are not used to seeing boxing any more in UFC  :-D  His right hand rarely left his head as apposed to all of the fighters that hold their hands low and off their head.  Apparently Daily Motion has a legal deal to host certain fights and this just so happens to be one of them:
