These Gathering reminders are exactly what I need to ignite the NOS... :)

i made a pair of mae swoks if any one is interested in fighting me with them let me know
-
Make the best out of it DOGS!!!! for one day I'll be there. Good luck to all. :-D

Woof All:
Some additional details in response to some questions I have received.
Yes, both days are for fighting. Yes the fighting will be in Los Angeles.
There will be a guest fighter with an interesting three section staff game.
I would like to encourage fighters to consider fighting Stick y Daga with the dage being a substantial aluminum blade. The idea here is to develop skill sets that discourage bum rushes into messy grapples.
Concerning my seminar in Israel the week before. Assuming I am not whacked by Al Quaeda, Hamas, or Hezbollah, while I am in Israel, there should be no problem :-)

Have a safe trip Guro. I wish that I was fighting too. I love what you have built. I know that sometimes I'm controversial, but meeting you all was and is the best thing that ever happened to me. In any event, as I've stated, have a safe trip. God Speed.

@GC,
Maybe I should call you but not into secrets. I respectfully request Kajukenbo Sifu J. Cordova to accompany me as a guest fighter and as I see a future Dog Brother to this Tribal Gathering. May I have your blessing for this invite. JCordova fought honorably at the last public gathering and also works as a US Marshal.
TAC,
Kaju

Not a question of secrets Kaju; just a matter of wanting to be able to be able to discuss matters candidly or even to reject a suggestion without embarassing someone publicly.

Good point well received as I embarace myself. (something Im good at) ;)

Your intentions were honorable, no embarassment is relevant here , , , except for your spelling

Crafty: could u elaborate on ideas you have that would discourage "rushes into grappling". If I understand u correctly you are connecting the weapon with discouraging that. Assuming I understand your thinking can u explain how this would discourage such tactic? Also would u help me understand why u would want to discourage this or are you saying that we need to develop better responses to "bum rushes ending in grappling"?
-
"my take is the pain penalty associated with the aluminum blade makes the rush to clinch less likely due to the risk"

There has always been a propensity during the fights with knives to do things one would probably not do if the blades were real. Using shocknives, cattle-prods and large heavy aluminium trainers amongst other weapons, is one way to add a bit more realism by virtue of not wanting to be hit due to the very real possibilities of pain and/or physical damage.
When the weapon is treated as just another blunt object there seems to be a lot more close quarters striking, clinching and grappling with less emphasis placed on what damage a live blade would be doing and addressing that problem appropriately. The end result is typically a mess with both participants "dying multiple messy deaths".
This is what Guru Crafty appears to be referring to in the quoted text.
As an aside, there probably is a lot to be said also about learning to mitigate "bum rushes ending in grappling" with edged weapons. For that context DLO is the key. So in a way, you might be right on both accounts. :-D
BTW - I don't recommend cattle-prods... they tend to scar.
Afterthought;
In addition to using weapons as mentioned it's helpful to talk to your opponent to re-iterate that you both want to treat the blades as live blades whether just daga versus daga or espada y daga versus xyz. Bitch Linda and I used little folder trainers in a Gathering once but treated them as very real sharp blades. It made for a very tactical and fun fight. There was no pain compliance with the little knives, just an equal understanding on reality. That may be helpful as well and that will be easy to set up in a closed Gathering with people who truly get it. Have fun!
-
Good discussion.
-
I think the introduction of the heavy aluminum trainers has added to the fights at the gathering immensely. I'm not sure when they first came out, maybe it was at the corral, but I found they definitely changed the tempo and characteristics of the fight. I love to grapple and last time I fought with the trainers I didn't so much as clinch.

Greetings all, I am new to this message board. I have been studying FMA since 2000. I have been fortunate enough to train with Guro Dan Inosanto, Ajarn Chai, and Erik Paulson. I began and continue my training at the Trident Academy of Martial Arts in Woodbridge Va, where i focus mainly on FMA and Thai boxing. Guro Crafty, you know my instructor well. I have seen him in a few of your videos ;). I have been interested in doing a Gathering for many years but feel I am now in a position (work, finances, etc.) to make the trip out to California for one. I had read on the website that the first weekend in May is an open gathering, however, if I am following along correctly, this one appears to be a closed affair. If it is a closed gathering, when is the next open gathering? I really look forward to coming out and meeting you guys and testing myself. I hope this message finds you all well, and I look forward to more discussions. Thanks for your time.

I like the idea of cattle prods. It should be painful and the scarring? We all have them. I say this with the utmost in respect.
My entire enamoration with what the Dog Brothers does, is that it builds men into who we are capable of becoming. That doesn't (nor should it), come easily.

Dinger:
Welcome aboard here.
Please extend my warm greetings to your teacher.
The Open Gathering is in September. If there is not a thread for it already, there will be. It will be held the Sunday in September closest to the equinox.

I can hardly wait. :-)

Guro Crafty
Thanks for the response. I will tell Pat you said hello. I look forward to September and will submit my leave to work next shift.

Dinger:
Welcome to the board. Although some personal issues may prevent me from fighting this September, I plan on, at the least, standing with the Tribe and I look forward to witnessing your first fights at a Gathering. C-Growling Dog has said that a person steps on the mat at their first Gathering as one person and they step off the mat another one. I've never met a fighter who disagrees with that assertion. September will be here before you know it!!

It changed me. My life will never be the same. That's all I've got to say about that.
-
Thanks for the welcome. I really look forward to it and cant wait. This has been a goal for a long time. I have heard lots of great things about Guru Crafty and cant wait to meet him and the rest of the Tribe. Any pointers for a first timer?
-
Challlenge the fighters that you know are better than you and if possible, set the fights up beforehand by getting to know the Tribe before the gathering. That is what I would have changed.

I really hope I become better at stickfighting then I am at sex. :-D

I would like to use a three sectional Staff and a Long Staff as weapons for the Gathering. If anybody is interested to fight against those weapons please let me know :-)

I've taken an interest in the health benefits of the short staff and hope to take you up on a future staff fight but will humbly resist your temptation until I find my comfort zone with the added length and weight.
I would love a knife fight...

Yip :-P Sniff-sniff... any word on the "Fighter Registration Form" We still send them in for the Tribal Gathering IIRC? I enjoy seeing the list of fighters grow as the Adventure draws near. :-)
Respectfully,
A Dog thats had a bit of kibble
-
Everyone must have one for each and every Gathering.
I will check with the boss about the form for this one.

Thanks a lot Guro Crafty!

Do we have a registration form at this point?
Location?
-
Guess we need to start getting around to that, don't we :-D
Location probably will be either as last year or a nearby place overlooking the ocean.

Woof Sisco:
It would be great to have your there. 8-)
-
Guro, do you know the day in Sept. the open gathering will be?
-
I'm on an Israeli hotel connection at the moment, so I will be brief:
Keep Saturday night open for good times!
-
Woof Brothers and Sistas,
Just confirming that I will not be able to be at this Tribal Gathering for a few reasons. Im terribly sorry that I will not be there to support the Tribe.
As for the Public Gathing in September, I dont foresee any reason at this time that would stop my being there.
With respect and admirration,
Kaju Dog :-P
-
So....should we assume that the Tribal is at the same location as last year? What time ...10ish?
-
Woof Kaju,
We'll miss you, brother. Semper Fi.
Aloha, Poi
-
Hum , , , who will be our EMT? Frankfurter?
Location: Will be about ten minutes from the usual location. I think everyone will be very pleased. Tomorrow (remember "tomorrow" means "not today") I will get the URL of the location so I can send it to all concerned. Also, we are looking at caravaning from the park.
-
Woof, In the event of some leisurly down time, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in trying out bending some steel.
It has great benefits to grip, wrist and forearm strength.
I will be more than happy to bring my stuff, if anyone wants to give it a go.
HD
-
Starting time 10:00.
Also, remember a big dinner will be held Saturday evening. Everyone comfortable with the Indian place we usually go?
-
I see 10 am. What is the location?
-
I'm game for Curry
-
@Pappy- you have email.
@all: If you are fighting, send me an email asking for the map. Also happening will be meeting at the usual place and caravanning from there.
-
If you are not familiar with where we used to hold the Gatherings, please go to Mapquest.com and enter my old address
505 4th St., Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.
Please try to arrive by 09:45 so we can leave for the actual location at 10:00.
-
Woof All:
In recent years we have rather consistently had an EMT at the Gatherings, notably our own Kaju Dog. Due to personal matters beyond his control he will not be able to make it. Our possible back-up, Frankfurter has unexpectedly been hit with work committments and he too will not be able to make it.
Bottom line: no EMT.
To the best of my knowledge, the nearest hospital is "Little Company of Mary" on Torrance Ave/BL in Torrance. This is a very good hospital. You should take a moment to find where it is and have directions so that if you are injured someone can take you there. My guess is about 12-15 minutes driving time. Also, there is an "Urgent Care" on Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach called "Ocean Medical". My guess is about 8 minutes driving time.
As always, only you are responsible for you, so protect yourself at all times.

Am I the only one whose chatter increased tremendously after receiving this information on Friday the 13th?! :-D HAH!!

Heartfilled appologies for not being there for the Tribe this time. Take care of each other and rewatch DLO 3 as a refresher and look forward to some future VL's related to treating common DB's event related injuries.
Strengthen the Pack and always "Be friends at the end of the day".

Pretty Kitty and I just came back from our favorite Chinese Massage place. Only $20 per hour!!! -- and they are really good!!! They soak your feet in hot tea while they start working on your head and then go from there.
They are open from 10:00-22:00 2219 Artesia Bl in Redondo Beach CA 90278 310-793-2308. Just the thing for the night before fighting, between two days of fighting, and after two days of fighting , , , :-D
-
Just want to wish everyone to have a great fighting weekend at the tribal gathering. Good lick to all. :-D
-
Sorry I meant good luck to all :-D :-D :-D
-
@jcordova: I kinda liked the first one.
-
Why do dogs lick their balls?
Because they can.
How do you give a dog medicine?
Put it on his balls.
When does a dog give you a kiss?
Right after he has taken his medicine.
-
I wanted to extend my wishes for a great time of growth among Tribe members. KNOW my heart is with you even though I can not be with you in person and that I stand firm with the Tribe. You all have my best wishes for honorable and skillful fights as well as excellent times of personal growth.

Woof:
Been jammed at work last week with coworker travelling on business and I was flying solo... I wanted to make a post wishing all the Fighters at the Tribal Gathering, brotherhood and a good learning experience! Sorry for the belated posting.
Very truly yours in the MA and SD,
~sg
-
Thank you.
Right now, I think we are all deep in the Altered Space that cames after such experiences.
The Adventure continues!
-
I know I am deep in the "dinged-up-fingers-make-it-hard-to-type" space that always comes after the Gatherings.
A very big MAHALO to all my brothers (and sister) who made it to the tribal this year, both those with whom I have crossed sticks/trainers and those I have yet to face. I am honored to call you friends. Safe travels and all the best.
Aloha, Poi
-
I too wanted to thank everyone that was there at the Tribal. I learned so much about Guts, Skill, Heart, and Brotherhood that weekend. Every person pushed me to he point of "near panic" which was very rewarding. I had the toughest knife fight with Linda "the Bitch" Matsumi that I've ever had with another individual. The energy at the Tribal is certainly different then the "Open". I don't understand those who choose to never fight at the "Tribal" and only do the "Open". IMHO, the Tribal is both Physically and emotionally more rewarding and wished it happened more often. I also wanted to Thank Guro Crafty Dog for his leadership in this Motley Crew. I thank Pappy Dog for being my teacher, and Poi for being a great guide, and my NOHO tribe for the training.
Words really can't explain the change that happens during a weekend of fighting. All I can do is SMILE!
Regards,
Yutthana Toki C-"Mighty Dog" Tokijkla

I had initially hoped to be able to attend the tribal this year -- but I got embroiled in training for an MMA fight and then in preparing to move . . . to SoCal. So chances of attending in the future just sky-rocketed. Sounds like it was a great event. Hats off to the fighters. See you all in 3 . 2 . 1 .

I also would like to thank everyone! Words can not describe what I feel...
That was one of the best weekends ever!!

Hey brother, are you planning on training with NOHO? I would be great to have some new blood and fellow Dog to our group.

Hey brother, are you planning on training with NOHO? I would be great to have some new blood and fellow Dog to our group.
You know, the future is a big mystery right now -- especially with regard to what kind of training situations will shake out. But no matter what I'm able to find the time to commit to regularly, I'm sure I'll come work out with you guys sometimes. I had fun and learned a lot last time; and I'm sure I'd get a lot out of it. Thanks for taking the time to show me what's what; I look forward to more of it in good time.

Forgive the moment of advertising, but , , , ahem , , , there is training available in the Hermosa Beach area too :-D
-
:-D ...That is a much better option for CK. Believe me, if I could routinely make the 200 mile round trip commute, you'd see me more often. I do love my NOHO tribe though.
-
Forgive the moment of advertising, but , , , ahem , , , there is training available in the Hermosa Beach area too :-D
I know it, and you have an email from me buried in your pile. Hermosa will actually be closer for me anyway, but it's still true that I'd like to work out with the NoHo crew sometimes. Sorry for either being too diplomatic -- or not diplomatic enough; but I reckon it's all good. In the fable, Country Mouse is scared 'back to from where he came' when he encounters the City Dogs. Hopefully this Country Moose can avoid that fate. Either way, it will be fun to run with or from the dogs!

I am still digging my way through the pile of emails accumulated in the last few weeks, but in case I screwed up, please resend it.

Night Owl has been hard at work on a clip of the 2011 DB Tribal Gathering of the Pack. I have just seen the ruff edit and given my blessings. The final version should be ready , , , soon, which as those of you who have been around a while know can be a somewhat elusive concept :-)

Just spoke with Night Owl. He tells me it should be going up tonight.
-
Get ...out.. of here!!!! Really! That's awesome!
-
I gather that the clip has gone up and been taken down. The reason is that Night Owl inadvertently left someone out and took it down while he is correcting this.
I cannot access Facebook from the hotel computer here in Memphis, so would someone here who is also there please explain the situation on the DBMA FB page. Thank you.
-
Woof Marc, The video link appears to be on the DBMA Facebook age with the title "Dog Brothers 2011 Tribal Gathering Highlights" and a number of member comments. However, when the otherwise normal-looking Play button in the middle of the video is pressed, the message "This video is private" appears in white text on the black background. This is a bit of a tease with no explanation. I'll post your comment "I gather that the clip has gone up and been taken down. The reason is that Night Owl inadvertently left someone out and took it down while he is correcting this."
-
My email from FB shows C-Mighty Dog (Toki) has posted that the final version is back up, but I cannot access FB from the hotel computer because FB is suspicious of my being in a different location-- therefore I do not know what the URL is. Would someone post it here please?
-
Here is the Clip...Thanks a lot to Night Owl for this beautiful work!!
And THANK YOU Guro Crafty for making all this possible!!!
