Ive fell off the path many times, sometimes life happens and you dont have time to train but you know, had I gone to training even though I didnt really want to I think I would have burnt out and when I finally went back it felt really good to get in and train. When I first moved to Hawaii, I didnt train at all for like 3 years part of it was trying to find the right group.  I met up with Dogzilla and everything clicked and it's always a blast even when getting whooped on by DogZilla or one of the others, lol.  Right now Im probably in training overdrive because my girl will be giving birth in February so I have been training with Tobosa Escrima, Ola'a-Nalo Escrima and DogZilla and when the baby comes, who knows what my schedule will be like..  :?

is there a lot that can be missed in FMA by primarily training only things which can be applied in sparring?

The tippy tap drill thread is a pretty good read too.

There are times where in the heat of sparring, things from Hubud or other drills that just come into play without any thought.  Stick happens.

I love the Summer gathering for one reason only, it means that I only have to wait four months for the next one, and it's here all ready. If you plan on being there drop your name on the thread.

I may do a fight single stick with shield, anyone interested?

Sheepdog

Oooh that sounds interesting, wish I could make it.  I don't think Ill be able to make it again until next June. Who knows maybe DogZilla and the rest of the crew will make it there for the June gathering that would be hella cool!

Did anyone watch UFC Fight Night?  Some pretty good fights, I thought it was pretty cool that Nate Quarry thanked Leonard Trigg after he won his match.  I could be assuming the wrong person but since Nate was fighting out of Oregon Im assuming that is the same person I am thinkging about.  Professor Leonard Trigg is also the "Director and Chief Instructor of LucayLucay Kali/Jeet Kune Do Association, Lameco Eskrima International Association, Northwest Regional Director of the Thai Boxing Association of America and USA Amateur & Pro Boxing Coach of West Portland Boxing Gym."  I wonder if he worked on any FMA concepts with Nate.  I was able to attend some seminars with Prof Trigg, great guy!

Knife saves hunter from angry bear
Man wounds animal, escapes with cuts and broken limb

Elise Stolte
The Edmonton Journal

Friday, August 17, 2007

EDMONTON - A man armed with a machete-style hunting knife suffered serious injuries to his arms and a leg as he fought off an angry bear near Grande Prairie on Wednesday evening.

The man was checking an area for the upcoming deer hunt when he walked between the mother bear and her three cubs.

The encounter happened near a creek in a farm field near the agricultural hamlet of Grovedale, 20 kilometres south of Grande Prairie.

A man working outside heard cries for help and called the fire department around 9:30 p.m.

Grande Prairie RCMP Const. Leanne Beattie said the man stabbed the bear three times with the large hunting knife before it took off.

The man had bite marks and scratches and appeared to have at least one broken limb. "That's good condition, considering," Beattie said.

"He ended up unintentionally cutting between the mom and the cubs, and as a result, mom got a little upset and went after him."

Smith described the man as in his 30s, about six feet tall with an average build. He was a stranger to the area.

After the attack, the man walked almost a kilometre back to the road. Despite his injuries, "he seemed all right," said Grovedale volunteer fire Capt. Troy Smith.

By the time the man was put into an ambulance, it was too dark to search the bush for the bear, Beattie said. Several Fish and Wildlife officers returned to the field Thursday in search of the wounded animal.

Officials aren't certain if it was a black bear that attacked the man. Black bears are more common than other species in the area, Beattie said

Another case of Bystander Apathy.

Police: Shoppers Stepped Over Victim
By ROXANA HEGEMAN

Associated Press Writer

WICHITA, Kan. — As stabbing victim LaShanda Calloway lay dying on the floor of a convenience store, five shoppers, including one who stopped to take a picture of her with a cell phone, stepped over the woman, police said.

The June 23 situation, captured on the store's surveillance video, got scant news coverage until a columnist for The Wichita Eagle disclosed the existence of the video and its contents Tuesday.

Police have refused to release the video, saying it is part of their investigation.

"It was tragic to watch," police spokesman Gordon Bassham said Tuesday. "The fact that people were more interested in taking a picture with a cell phone and shopping for snacks rather than helping this innocent young woman is, frankly, revolting."

The woman was stabbed during an altercation that was not part of a robbery, Bassham said. It took about two minutes for someone to call 911, he said.

Calloway, 27, died later at a hospital.

Two suspects have been arrested. A 19-year-old woman was charged with first-degree murder. Another suspect who turned himself in had not been charged as of Tuesday, the Sedgwick County prosecutor's office said.

The district attorney's office will have to decide whether any of the shoppers could be charged, Bassham said.

It was uncertain what law, if any, would be applicable. A state statute for failure to render aid refers only to victims of a car accident.

Eagle columnist Mark McCormick told The Associated Press he learned about the video when he called Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams to inquire about a phone call he had received from a reader complaining about a Police Department policy that requires emergency medical personnel to wait until police secure a crime scene before rendering aid. McCormick said Williams then unloaded on him about the shoppers in the stabbing case.

"This is just appalling," Williams told the newspaper. "I could continue shopping and not render aid and then take time out to take a picture? That's crazy. What happened to our respect for life?"

Looks like Mayweather is coming out of retirement.

Mayweather targets Hatton!
Floyd vows to beat him all the way back to England.
"Ricky Hatton has talked nonstop about fighting me for the last two weeks," says 'retired' WBC welterweight/super welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather. "He has disrespected me and my accomplishments in the ring, and I take that very seriously. I'm going to give him the opportunity to step up and fight the best in the world. I don't think this punk will take the challenge." A potential bout against Hatton would set the stage for a match-up between two of the sports best undefeated fighters. With his win over Castillo, Hatton improved his record to 43-0 with 31 KO's. Mayweather is 38-0 with 24 KO's. "Now that Hatton has opened up his big mouth, he might start to think about what he has been asking for," continued Mayweather. "Does he really want to step into the ring with best fighter of this era and embarrass himself? Being the coward that he is, I doubt he'll get in the ring. We'll see what his excuse will be this time."

This sounds like an exciting fight! Hopefully I can catch the replay.

WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (30-0, 25 KOs) scored an eleventh round TKO over Zab Judah (34-5, 25 KOs) in a wild back and forth classic on Saturday before a crowd of 20,658 at a sold out Madison Square Garden in New York City. In round one Judah hurt Cotto with an uppercut, Cotto put Judah on the deck with a low blow. Cotto was effective for most of round two, but was rocked again by Judah at the end of the round. Cotto continued the pressure in the third and another low blow put Judah down again. A point was deducted from Cotto. Cotto was bleeding from the mouth as Judah found a home for the left hand. Judah was cut over the right eye in the fourth as he was hammered by Cotto. Cotto was cut over the right eye in the sixth but wobbled Judah midway through the round. Judah opened up and hurt Cotto again in the seventh. Cotto was back on the attack in an exciting eighth. Judah's right eye was starting to close in the ninth and Judah took a knee to escape Cotto's assault. Cotto continued to brutalize Judah in the tenth. Judah was floored by a right hand in the eleventh and referee Arthur Mercante Jr. stopped the fight after Cotto's followup assault. Time was :49.

Not wanting to be picky, but as an old school Judoka... tatami are the reed mats.  But it is also the brand name of olympic style Judo mats, just hoping to avoid confussion   (I've been bitten by this before   ).

I was wondering about that myself, I searched using the term "tatami mats" which came up with the picture of the reed mats as well as the foam "puzzle" mats.

It would be kinda cool to use the reed mats Im sure they wont be as forgiving as the foam though, lol.

Woof:

With DB Gatherings part of the charm is that there are "No judges, no referees, no trophies"-- so part of me is leery of being pulled into such a function.

yip!
CD

I hear that and what a tricky task it is to keep the sparring realistic.  I guess way it comes down to the players activating the "watcher" and being honest when a good slash or thrust is executed and felt but then again in such an adrenalized state sometimes the thrust \ slash isnt felt.  Tricky indeed.

Martial Arts Topics / Re: sparring with bladed weapons

I think this is going to be a good thread and I look forward to reading some great replies. Im not sure how to address the some of the other questions but I guess in the case of sparring or in a Gathering setting maybe an option is to have several judges watching from different angles just like they do in the tournaments. Matches would be short but "realistic" if we follow the one hit concept that Maija practiced with Maestro Sonny, another idea is that while using the "one cut your out" concept add in the idea that if the cut is "Minor" i.e. on a hand then the cut person loses or has limited use of that hand or appendage.

Quote
so how do you train it alongside the idea that you probably will not......?

Quote
standing in front of someone holding a live blade, knife, machete, katana, pinute, whatever, and i can tell you that my first impulse is not to run at them, taking a few cuts on the way in as i go for the strike/take down.

IMHO I believe that one of the most important factors would be mental preparation.

I finally got a chance to watch the Grandfathers Speak VOL 2 and Maestro Sonny was amazingly fast, I liked his idea and ability to check with the flate of the blade vs using the alive \ empty hand.
