i've enjoyed this thread..

one thing i haven't seen mentioned yet is-cultivating environmental awareness for access to a weapon (or an exit...).
oh, and 360 degrees awareness

unless of course we were talking about one on one "fair" fighting

But you can't do that all the time

you don't have to do it all the time, but getting to the adrenal state even a few times, realizing its there, your mindset in it, your capabilities, and understandings, etc. will give you an advantage over an oppenent who hasn't been there.

the 2 on 2 siniwali is great to try out amongst friends with action flex type sticks. they are great for working on group encounters.

to model your movements on Lonely Dog

I haven't bought this one yet (it's on the list) but the above is a great reason for buying the DB dvds.  I enjoy watching the dvds and vid clips and then trying to emulate everyone's movements, strikes, etc. The more i've learned, the more I have to look for, and there's some really good things happening in lots of fights. Guro Lonely moves so well too!

congratulations to all! excellent fights!

I missed day three, but I heard that there were some great fights. It was glad to meet a lot of the people from the board and put names to faces. I'm amazed at the heart and skill that people displayed over multiple days of fighting. I want to give a shout out to Corey and the Johns for driving me around, I really appreciate it.

Some of my highlights:

1) the stick and knife fight between Pappy Dog and Red Dog
2) The little in between spaces over the weekend, talking to people, Red Dog giving a short intro to his German sword fighting style
3) watching people consult, strategize, or learn a quick technique before a fight and then pulling it off
4) the fights! good stuff...

Answering a question with a question is never appropriate, but regardless...

How do you, as a balintawak practitioner, close the gap to get to corto range? I'm guessing there is something in the system to get from point A to B, or is the fight begining at this range?

I'm in agreement with Tom. I haven't trained for this Gathering, but my approach is well, I should be ready for anything anytime, and if i'm not, how will i do? on one level i'm fairly scared/stressed, but on another, my expectations are low, so there's some relaxtion. we'll see how it goes... :|

Martial Arts Topics / Seminar reviews
« on: October 23, 2007, 09:02:44 PM »
didn't see a thread on this topic...

I just want to thank Guro Crafty, Dino, and Ashley from team ruthless for holding a great seminar out on the east coast last weekend. Guro Crafty covered a large amount of material and I think the participants made strong gains in their stickwork. We reviewed the footwork matrix, the triques material, the salty strike, and some other tangents as well. I haven't trained with Guro in awhile so it was also nice to see some of the new material that he's developed. Good times had by all, it was a great weekend.

be friends at the end of the day!

i think my goal (eventually) is to fight with a first gen mask and no shoes/kneepads. the knees pads i have used were thin wrestling (not volleyball) and mainly served in case i had to shoot in on the wrestling mat, but i don't think i'll wear them if the new location hsa a different surface.

1) I didn't catch that season of TUF so I don't know the background between the fighters. I thought Hamill won the fight, although I was impressed with Bisping's ability to get back up after being taken down-a bit like Chuck Liddel. At this point though I don't think either have the tools to make a go for the belt. Hamill's striking needs more polish.

2) Cro Cop was the open weight champ of a sizeable tourny; the man if you will, only a year ago. He fought way more frequently than Fedor, so give the man his due. Kongo Made CroCop seem small, plus the shots to the groin  :-o He does seem to lack the killer instinct that he's displayed in K1 and in pride. what is it that they say about fighter's recovering from a KO loss?

3) excellent fight, sorry to see hendo "lose," but wow, such skill by both, great fight. Rampage is at a peak.

well...i'm not old but i've kept my ears open and will toss some thoughts in. One of my training partners in grappling was in his early fifties and people would come up to ask him for advice on his training regimen and such. one thing he would talk about, which i was later to hear echoes of at a Dr. Gyi seminar, was the importance of training methodology. many people, especially when were young, like to punish their bodies and train "hard" which isn't necessarily training "smart." My friend emphasized the importance of training like an athlete instead of a martial artist. He would point to guys in the NBA, Karl Malone, etc. who played for a long time, and Kobe who's physical health is worth quite a bit to the Lakers. Instead of doing physically punishing old school kung fu inspired workouts, we should emulate pro athletes and the science of physical exercise. These guys are some of the best conditioned athletes in the world, and we should look to them and how they train. The Dr. Gyi seminar also talked about the importance of letting our bodies recover, and not to become "crippled." yes, it's impressive to break bricks with your fists when your twenty, but when you're fifity, and your body is broken, how will you be able to defend yourself?
which is one of the attractions of the dbma material. not many systems address healing and longevity.

Is it better to train consecutively in more than one style, (such as concentrating exclusively on Kali for a while, then leaving that off for MMA style mat work, and so forth) or is it better to train in multiple styles at the same time? (maybe you would have a more even development all around)?

I think it's good to have a base art, something upon which you can fall back on when all else fails, an art in which you put many solid hours of training into. BUT once that has occured, it's important to train in a multitude of ranges and styles (striking/grappling/weapons) and learn how to tranisition between each of them.

i saw two guys practicing in the park the other day. it was pretty fun to watch their workout. they took over a small section of the park and just repeated going through this one section with the same techniques...they started with climbing the lampost and then jumping off to swing through a set off pullup bars, then they ran the ledge for a slightly elevated plant enclosure and then did something else which i've forgotten like jumping over a bench or something. the run through took 30 seconds or so and then they would repeat...looks like good fun.

My initial introduction to DBMA was several years ago when I saw an ad in a martial arts magazine

i remember seeing the DB videos in the panther videos section of Black Belt magazine...maybe 10 years ago? I think at that moment it became a matter of when, not if, i would try stickfighting...was anyone else immediately hooked?

the last time i had the opportunity to train with guro was in 2004, and during his classes at the academy, he would share some ideas when stickgrappling or when practicing empty hand on the ground. alot of the things blew me way in their simplicity and effectiveness. was it KT ground? i don't know but it was really great material, and given guro's constant efforts to test and prove effective material i'm really interested to see what he's come up with the past few years...
i'm especially looking forward to the KT clinch material...

good odds for oscar i think

I'm pulling for oscar, though I think it'll go the distance and mayweather will get the nod. Mayweather is slick and can move, it'll be interesting to see if oscar can goad him into exchanging or cut off the ring to force an exchange.

hopefully it'll be on free tv in asia...

a bunch of views and no responses?

I can't answer your first question (although Kali Tudo is on my shopping list along with DLO...), though it may be worth checking out Guro Inosanto's series to see if hubud drills are there.

As for the polypor stick, I have never used cold steel's but have tried something similar and found that it wasn't really to my liking (although it was okay to usa in my random things i like to swing around collection). Without getting too hokey, it really is better to have a nice piece of rattan. Everytime Pappy Dog (www.bloodsport.com) would bring his bucket of sticks to the gathering i'd like to hold each one and get a feel for it's "soul." In some ways your stick chooses you. I'm just not sure polypor can do that. I currently use sticks ordered from here and they have lasted a good long time.

(plus the burning smell that rattan makes when you're heavy hitting is nice too)

wow. good reading. i've been a bit interested in SCA, it has always looked like fun.

Another question for Euro practitioners is how many of you study stage combat/combat for the theatre/sword choreography and how does that fit in to how or what you study? I remember looking into fencing awhile back and it seemed that there was some cross interest between the sport as well as applying technique for the stage/screen. for those of us who know little about euro arts, most of what i see comes from movies, how realistic is stage choreography compared to the texts you've studied?

Renzo is sly, but frank has crisp striking and superior conditioning. i don't think renzo can take him down. it could look like frank vs. jeremy horn or frank vs. elvis sinosic, but i really think frank can outstrike renzo on the feet or the ground.

Martial Arts Topics / Re: WHERE IS THE FOOTWORK!?!
« on: February 07, 2007, 05:38:01 AM »
i think GSP shows great mobility and footwork during his fights. i'm not sure if the lack of footwork among some folk is a trend. i think there is a group of fighters, leben, robbie lawler, that want to show how tough they are by walking across the ring and trading punches. they're tough guys and rely on it to the detriment of footwork and mobility. or they might just not have trained good striking footwork because of their background. i think during one of deigo's fights in TUF1 you can hear his corner saying "circle" then "...circle the other way"
