Random question here..I notice that all of the dog brother fights are with a weapon..What about just going at it weaponless against each other and rolling empty hand? Have you guys done this before?

Im game!  I do that with my guys and love to toss a knife or stick into mix at random (imagine a knife falling out of your opponents pocket in the middle of a fight).  Also, if the fight goes to the ground for more than 60 sec's (unless we are training that area) I send in another person.  Think of comming out of the bathroom at a bar and seeing your buddy struggling on the ground, time to jump in.

We can stick to the Roots of DB's and still have this element (IMHO).

Keeping it progressive always.

Cause I know most of the fights I have been in there has never been a stick or a knife..Just two guys making each other have a puffy face...

And this happens in the Gathering fights, often after the first few seconds.  The issue is that there are tons of venues for weaponless fighting, so why drag down the premier weapons fighting event ?

Maxx, My suggestion to you is to come to a Gathering, experience its magic, watch the fighters/fights ( IMHO some of the best martial artists the world has to offer) as far as fighters that is.

Even then I'am doubtful you can truley understand, what this means to the guys and gals that fight at the gathering and the Brotherhood that is dog Brothers.
Bear in mind guys come from all over the world at their own expense not to win awards, trophys, or money, but to test themselves in a place like no other.
The prize is knowing that you can stand in the fire and come out on the other side.  There's nothing like it. (my definition of warrior)

Not onley that but the tribe is truley a tribe, its not us against them but brother pushing brother to the ragged edges.
Dangerous, brutal yes....but its also a very spiritualy, beautiful thing......I could sit here and try to type it into words, but words would fall way short.
To fully understand it has to be experienced.
It is my priviledge to be a tribe member and to gather with the pack.

Dog Tom,

What a great post! All I have to add is that the post-Gathering state of being is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.  Aside from a great shot on the elbow from Poi Dog and a good knee to the ribs from Pappy, most of the injuries I have sustained at the Gatherings have gone unnoticed until I arrived home and fired up that post-Gathering shower.  This is not to say that I have not been hit hard by many of the other amazing warriors that I have fought with but the high that I experience every time I fight in a Gathering makes it all seem not so bad and VERY, VERY worth it. There's NOTHING like it.

If you are even thinking of fighting, you should do it.  Take a knife fight to warm-up and then take a stick fight and see what happens. The Gathering is a lab space, not the Olympics. I have "been killed", "killed", looked really bad and gotten beat up, and also managed to pull a few cool things off. I'm willing to "die", tap, "kill", get hit, or hit you as many times as I need to in order to facilitate my growth and to see the tribe grow as a whole. I've written this before: Let's step out there and  hurt each other a little bit. :-)

Sure but I would like more of a brawl with mixed weapons.  All those double sticks just doesnt leave much variety...  but Im game.

HMmm, try this image;  2 on 3...  double stick/single stick and shock knife   ///   staff/double stick/shock knife

Now that would be fun....

Im in for any of the above...  driving the truck up this time...   and this is after our Kaju gathering so nothing lined up after this event = time to lick my wounds and reflect.

In multiple player knife fights attacks from behind are a staple.

How do you think to handle this with sticks or other weapons?

Good question Sir  8-)

One thats answer is easier imagined than accomplished  :-D

A simple idea is to work more of a zone defense.  As my teacher loves to say, "Be like the spider to the fly".

My objective/goal (other than survival) is to feel the two packs (teams, back buddies, etc.) work together in order to survive.  I would like to hear communication and see stratagies at play with changing variables throughout the encounter.

Trust in your fellow DB to have your back and trust in his heart/will to win.

*I would like to call on Junk Yard Dog (aka Greg) to have my back...  He is courageous and full of heart (IMHO).

If not him, then anyone of the other Warriors from the 20th Gathering.

Woof 8-) :-)

We will battle with the Brother at your side, at any given moment.  We dont always have the luxury of choosing who we have next to us when the crap hits the fan.

I hope to battle side by side with all of the Pack at some time or another.  It is my honor to do so.

A two on two or three double stick fight sounds to me like a WHOLE LOT of pain.
As for the attacks from behind goes.........Guro Crafty are you asking this from a safety stand point or a tactical one?
I think it in evitable that someone would get behind their opponent....... From a safety stand point, I would hope that the fighters would not take a cheap shot(goes without saying).

I have'nt had the guts yet to fight double stick 1-1.......but if a 2-2 or 2-3 double stick fight can be worked out... :|.....I MIGHT....emphisis on MIGHT...be intrested. Besides this is Dog Brothers......lets prove it!!! 8-)
Like I said sounds like a whole lot of PAIN. :|

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure this was a safety concern question that Guro posed. The chance of an injury from a stick or staff to an opponent facing the other direction has the potential to be pretty severe. In this regard IMHO a fight of this caliber is best left to members of the tribe who understand what Dog Brothers really is about and who know what is and what is not a cheap shot as you mentioned Tom. Care would need to be taken to avoid the exposed head, neck and knees to be sure. I think it can be done though. I would be game for this but to be honest the staff part makes me pause as I'm not sure I like the idea of not having my full attention on a properly wielded staff. Yikes... (Unless I can bring the .38)

I have strong safety concerns here.

People will be whirling and even with good DB spirit, excrement happens.  At the Temecula Gathering we had someone hit in the back of the neck during the middle of a spin.  The fighter dropped instantly (and with my him, my heart), but fortunately the impact was not directly on the spine.

Here the a primary intention precisely is to achieve attacking from behind.  Even a partial rotation that is unanticipated by the attacker could result in an unintended strike to the spine.

Also quite possible is a strike to the kidney.  Yes I know we have liver and spleen shots in fighting sometimes, but these seem to me to be of a lesser order because they are seen and usually with punches or knees.  An unseen stick shot to the kidney seems to me of much greater order than these.  We had a stick shot to the kidney once on a man who turned to pick up a dropped stick and it dropped him hard.  IIRC he was peeing blood for a few days.  It may appear on one of the "Stickfighting is dangerous!" warnings on the beginnings of our DVDs.

Understood repsectfully Guro,

I respectfully retract my request.  With the intent that was posted within the following replies, I can see where this would be better set for a more controlled scenario or instructional practice lesson, not a full blown DB's "...Harder Contact" (Open to public)  Gathering.

Thanks all for your replies.  Back on track...

I was really looking forward to being a spectator for the 2 on 2 siniwali fight!   :-D  In all seriousness, I can understand, Crafty's concerns.  You would have to have the right mix of folks, and even then it would be hard to avoid an accidental...something.  However, I admire everyone's willingness to jump in and commit to something like that!

I realized that I was not being clear above: I have two folks from my training group who will be fighting for the first time.  One of them would be a good fight for "Dog" Ryan, not to call you out Ryan.  I am supposed to fight this fellow as well, for his first stickfight, which I find a little difficult.  I am taking steps to see that he is prepared for his first Gathering.  I have been showing him some of my favorite things to work on for a Gathering.  However, because I am going to fight him, I am not showing him everything.

P.S. Scurvy, I too really enjoyed your gunplay at the R 2 the R.  Also, since you are so close, I need to get in touch with you and maybe you can come work with my group in the next few weeks, so they don't have to listen to me all of the time.

Ryan,

The fighter I want to get you in there with will be doing his first stickfight with me.  After that, I want to get him in there with some good folks who I know get the DB spirit who will give him good, honest energy.  Also, I think you two are pretty evenly matched in weight (he's shorter than you, but he's in very good shape) and my guy enjoys grappling.  He also knows who you are (DB promo piece and these boards) and I really think you could be good for him later in the day.  I know that you have specific things that you work on in your fights, and I don't want to book your day, especially because your involvement involves a plane ride, but I would be happy if it works out.

I have to say that I had confused the dates and was affraid I was going to have a conflict with being able to make the gathering.
It's Grandmaster Cacoy Canete's 89th Birthday that weekend and he's doing a seminar that 8th & 9th at The House Of Champions.
In checking in here, I'm so relieved that this will be immediately following - A two day seminar with Grandmaster will be a nice tune-up for the gathering...

For anyone interested in the seminar, you can find out more about it here:
http://www.houseofchampions.com/events.html

Guro Crafty, I wonder if you've ever been to HOC and/or whether it would be a consideration for the gathering.
I'd be obliged to do whatever I can to facilitate this if so needed - just let me know.

1.  Any updates on the location options?

2.  My L knee is still an issue for me...  I have a follow up Dr apt. on Thursday with Ortho.  Both of my Physical Therapists that I work under are confident that I have at a minimum torn my medial meniscus.  Waiting to see Dr on Thursday and hope to get an MRI soon after to be sure.

I will certainly be there for the Gathering and hope to Fight but we will see...  *Fingers crossed

I will also be bringing about 3 students with me.  They may or may not fight....  I will have them sign up just incase...  Im confident that at least one of them will fight for sure...   8-)

Think possitive and stay progressive everyone...

I'd like to make a special effort to come out to this, i currently have a broken nose which has had me on my ass for a while and will have me mostly on my ass for another month then hopefully i can resume hard training.

Anyways, about me, i'm a 143 pound female, my weapons training is primarily through ARMA and I do a lot of work with the longsword as well as the roundel dagger.  If i do manage to make it out, and I really think I will, I would love to get partnered up with someone. I have done hard contact sparring with rattan sticks (no gear, not even helmets) before so I'm not afraid of getting hit by any means

I would prefer to use a dog brothers style staff modified to be more like a longsword (closer in weight to my weapon of choice) but for safety reasons I'd happily use a shinai bamboo sword modified to have a crossguard and pommel aswell.

Just to make sure all my experience is out there i've also had 9 kickboxing matches, won 8 of them, and three MMA fights with a record of 1-2.

If I make a special effort to attend , will someone fight me? I am open to anything that will allow me to play with reasonable simulators of my weapons of choice and would probably play with some new stuff aswell. I am always eager to experiment.

I saw that two chicks were already planning on coming. Got room for one more?

PS: what safety gear should I bring? I know a three weapons fencing mask seems pretty standard but wanted to know if anything else was recommended

PPS: I know the exact location is still TBA but what city is this held in? I want to start making travel arrangements and i just filled out my fighter form.

KJ:

Thank you for the integrity of being candid about your background.

At the moment we are unsure whether Linda M. is coming.  OTOH Ashley of Manassas VA is excited and training well.  Currently some cyber gremlins are fouling up her efforts to get registered for the forum here, but do know that she will be posting in response to you , , , soon.  This will be Ashley's first experience with weapon fighting and to the best of my knowledge her focus has been for single stick, but I leave it to the two of you to work things out.

Woof KJ:

At this point, the Shocknives are a standard feature of our Gatherings.

I spoke with Linda this evening.  Pressing family matters distract her at this point and her attendance is a genuine question mark.  I did my best to remind her that there is nothing like a good day of stickfighting to put things right.  She laughed and said she would see.

I would be more than happy to fight you. I wouldn't mind doing double stick but I am leaning more towards single stick. . . .if that is a possibility for you, I would be glad to jump in. Also, I wouldn't mind doing a knife fight, I think that would be lots of fun.

My experience in "single stick" is very limited.  I am generally a long weapon user. (about 48 inches). But if you'll play my game with me I'll play your game with you or we can mix it up or whatever.  I can bring either some bamboo shinai kendo type practice weapons which like rattan sting but wont break anything serious:

or one or two  of the padded weapons we use in ARMA (make no mistake, they still pack a whallop and are not fun to get hit with).

I think it'd be a fun time either way to mix it up a bit.

Your call.

Dino and I got some kind of good and kind of bad news a couple a days ago. The good news is that the facility has gotten unusually busy for summer. Busier than we had planned for. The bad news is that we do not have the manpower to be able to competently run the facility if we are not there. The outcome - We are not able to go to The Gathering in August 2008. It is a very bittersweet situation. We will begin training today for next years first Gathering of the Pack! Also, we will make sure that we have sufficient staff to run the facility properly so that this does not happen again!

See you and Dino this Saturday for AMOK...

Hey guys.  First time poster, longtime follower on this board.  I'm writing a school paper on DBMA and managed to get my university to fund my travel to the Gathering, and was hoping to interview some of you guys who are fighting.  My paper is focused on how DBMA has changed your sense of self and lead to personal growth, and I'm particularly interested in how fighting relates to the way you view politics.  If you're available to talk before or after the Gathering, I'd deeply appreciate your time.  thanks

2) The Reuters News Service will be covering the event.  I know, I know, Reuters has engaged in some seriously dishonest reporting about America, but the fellow with whom I spoke seemed nice-- still, be alert.

3) Either tomorrow or next week I hope to be able to report about a potentially huge development , , ,

Howl of Greeting:
The rhythm of the seasons is with us and its time for the "Summer Dog Brothers Gathering of the Pack". On behalf of the Council of Elders of the Dog Brothers, Dog Brothers Inc. hereby cordially invites all people of good spirit to its "Dog Brothers Summer Gathering of the Pack" at 11:00 AM on Sunday, August 10, 2008.

We thank Original Productions for the use of its warehouse/set for the past two Gatherings, but it is converting the warehouse to offices and thus the space is no longer available.   We are delighted to say that we have found what we believe will be our new home for years to come at:

POWERHOUSE GYM
10950 Sherman Way
Suite 160
Burbank CA 91505

The PG facility has plenty of parking and the basketball court area wherein the Gathering itself will be held has plenty of room.  Bring cushions for your comfort.  For current chatter on what's happening keep track at  http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=1484.0

The Magic Words:

The MAGIC WORDS: "No judges, no referees, no trophies. One rule only: Be friends at the end of the day. This means our goal is that no one spends the night in the hospital. Our goal is that everyone leaves with the IQ with which they came. No suing no one for no reason for nothing no how no way!Real Contact Stickfighting is Dangerous and only you are responsible for you, so protect yourself at all times. All copyright belongs to Dog Brothers Inc. CA law applies."

THIS MATTER OF ACCEPTING ALL RISKS APPLIES TO THOSE OF YOU OBSERVING AS WELL!!!

For example, sticks, and fights for that matter, may go flying into the crowd.  Parents should consider things like this in deciding whether a child is old enough to bring along and/or deciding on from where to observe the event. If a stick or a fight comes careening your way know that the fight has right of way-- it is on you to get out of the way! If you are sitting in or near the front row, we will not make fun of you if you wear protective headgear!

As always, NO VIDEO CAMERAS and NO DUAL PURPOSE CAMERAS WILL BE ALLOWED. In God we trust, everyone else, NO DUAL PURPOSE CAMERAS. If you see someone cheating, please let us know!!!

We will continue starting the knife fights with a handshake and the knives undrawn and analogous ideas. Concerning the knife fighting, there is a relevant thread at http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=1296.0  We will have some "Shocknife" knives on hand and so it looks like we will be able to have electric knife vs. electric knife fights (as long as they last!). Perhaps this will help induce more realistic behavior during the knife fights!

Again we encourage you to fight knife versus stick-- the stick versus electric knife is always exciting. Stick vs. knife has been one of perennial questions of the FMA, so let's continue the research! Also, please feel free to hide a knife on your person and surprise your opponent with it during the stickfights. Remember that you may fight with weapons other than a stick if you can find someone willing to go against you. Please consider staff, double stick, and anything else. In order to more deeply explore certain variables, fighters may agree to "no grappling" rules. In staff fights, the fighters may wear wrestling type ear guards under the fencing masks.

As always, there is no charge for fighters but FIGHTERS MUST PRE-REGISTER, even if they have fought before. WE WILL BE RUTHLESS ON THIS! The Fighter's Registration form can be found on the website and MUST be filled out whether you have fought before or not. For all Fighter Registration matters, please contact Cindy at info@dogbrothers.com 310-540-6853. You are not registered until your name appears on the list of registered fighters on the website!!!

Know that recently I signed a contract with a media company with a good track record of sports/reality TV shows to help them develop a show based around stickfighting.  Know that an executive from the company probably will be on hand to scout for prospects.   Also, know that the international news service Reuters will be covering this Gathering.

Our man in Mexico City and my friend, Mauricio Sanchez, has been bringing me there for several years now and ably representing us there.  I am delighted and proud to report that he has gotten a visa and an airplane ticket to come fight at the Gathering!!!

The problem is this:  The plan was for him to stay at the hostel in Hermosa Beach and for me to give him a ride on Gatheirng day, but the hostel is full up and now he does not have a place to stay, nor the budget to afford what hotels can cost.  Is there someone who can help out with a sofa or sleeping bag & wrestling mat or something of the sort?  He'll be glad to contribute what he had budgeted for the hostel.  He arrives on the 6th and leaves on the 13th.

He doesn't speak much English, but I am sure he will make a fine guest , , ,

Woof Guro Crafty, It is my understanding that a part of the idea of a gathering is that the fighters rely on their fighting skills to protect them. (not pads)

I have two first time fighters comming with me and have encouraged them to fight with little or no pads.
To my knowledge they will onley be wearing gloves.
It would be unfortunate (IMHO) for these first time fighters to end up fighting guys that are all padded up.
Is their any rule on this?

I was assuming knee/elbow pads of foam construction (e.g. wrestling sliders); no plastic "bubble"-type pads...  :?

I'am not against small pads, but lets face it you can walk through most shots even with the wrestling "sliders" .
Just my opinion, but I think pads are kind of like steriods......they give an advantage to those who do use them.
Then again it forces me to choose? weather to use the same advantage and wear the pads....or to take my chances and try to compete without them.

I would say pads plus a skilled fighter, is a serious advantage to be wary of.....
Its actually so much so, that I'am considering going out and buying some pads, before sunday.

CD or PK,

My student, Jeremy Sartain, resent his fighter registration form today to Pretty Kitty's email.  Please, let me know if you need anything from me.

Also, Jeremy is Co-starring in the medical DVD I am working on.  I'll have my raw footage for to give to Crafty on Sunday.

Correction:

Jeremy informed me last night that he "Faxed" in he registration form.

I am behind the curve here, but will also be sending in my Fighter registration form ASAP.    I'll test my gimp fighting style, but admit that I will be taping the %$#@ out of my knee, just to save falling and crying like a wuss infront of my Brothers.

*Heck, the damage is done and I get surgery on Tuesday anyway.   :-P  There's no way the demons inside me will let me just watch.  Tried that at my first gathering and they got the best of me then.

See you all on sunday with Med Bag in hand....

"Stick and Stones..."

PS
CD,

Do we know if there will be any other EMT types working with me to ensure the wellness of our Warriors?  (ie David "Adventure").  I have not heard from hm in a short while.

PPS

JunkYard Dog, Dog Pound, I would love a rematch.

Also looking to play with the Shock Knives this time around.

I wont be to skippy, but this Pup has still got a few tricks (ticks) in his fur.

IMO, I found when I wore pads my first time out, I felt a bit restricted on my ground game.  (Oh, wait...  That was because Dog Pound was on top of me)

I enjoyed the O.K. Corral without pads, I definately felt "Higher Conscousness Through Harder Contact".

"Friends at the end of the day", to me, that means to FIGHT WITH STRENGTH & HONOR.

My goal is not to hospitalize ANYONE, but to push them and myself to the edge.

Tom,

I think that padding is a matter of personal preference. I haven't seen anyone fight in heavy padding, but have seen plenty of "sliders" of both the elbow and knee variety. I'd say if your guys are used to going at it un-padded, let 'em at it.

Lets be clear here.  Wrestling type elbow and knee protections, i.e. to protect the skin from scraping on the fencing masks is OK, BUT THAT"S IT.

I've yet to confirm the details with Cindy, but a goodly discount on DBMA DVDs is one option as an expression of our appreciation.

CD,

I know on the registration form there is a place for Fighters Ht/Wt.

My first timer was wondering who to line up a first time fight with, etc...  That got me to thinking that in the future, maybe that info could be posted ahead of time on the public registered fighters list.  Hoping to promote more prefight discussion and preset fight agreements between the players.  (Informal of course).

Just a thought...

I know in reality, we dont have the luxury of choosing our attackers Ht/Wt/etc...  But for first timers, this may be a means to create chatter.

Yip

For matching height/weight, just look to Roger Tinkoff (C-Space Dog).  He challenged and fought Tom Kier for a single stick fight at his first Gathering.   A 2x weight and strength difference is a true Gathering experience.  Granted, that's tougher to find for the larger guys.

My student Mauricio of Mexico City is looking for double stick fights.

Changing subjects, our friend David Knight of Hermosa Beach needs a ride to and from the Gathering.  If someone could help him out that would be great.  His phone number is 310-404-3815.  I've just left a message telling him I will be posting here about him so he shouldn't be surprised to hear from you.  Thanks.

I keep a ton of gear in the back of my car on a regular basis. I just got back inside from setting up a smaller bag for tomorrow. I have a pair of gloves that I have been fighting in since my second Gathering. I swear they were pulsing/humming/vibrating a little bit as I set them into the smaller bag.

For the newbies fighting tomorrow, you are about to do something that most people would go out of their way to avoid, and you will be changed for the better when you come out on the other side. As for the friends that I have made through DBMA, I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow. As usual, it is going to be an amazing day!

Actually, I'm not sure if it was Rog's first stick fight, but it was definitely his first Gathering.  Rog is a rare example of courage.  He knew Tom Kier because Guro Kier ran some of the Sayoc Kali training sessions at the DB Training Camp in the summer of 2002.  And Tom was a tough instructor.

Little Bolveys is doing well. He's pushing a 5 gallon water bottle as a walking aid.  I'm in decent fight shape, so I hope to be back at the next Gathering.  Miss you guys.  On Sunday, I had the strong feeling that I should be in LA fighting instead of porking up on Dim Sum in San Francisco at my family reunion.

Big Thanks to Guro Crafty and the rest of the Dogs for the "Gathering of the Pack"

Big thanks to  Pappy Dog (my teacher), Junkyard Dog, Seeing Eye Dog, Matt, Eric, Chuck.. basically the entire N. Hollywood crew for training, guidance, and preparing me for my first Gathering.

I haven't been training long and truthfully was having second thoughts on participating in the Gathering.... but once I  verbally said it out loud and told Pappy Dog "I'm going to do it"... I knew there was no turning back! Then I downloaded the fighters registration doc and saw my name and thought to myself " OH SNAPS!  Brian what did you get your self into!" I learned a lot about myself on Sunday and I thank you all.

Guide Dog, thank you for the fight.  I have a lot more to learn and I hope to be a more of a challenging opponent for you at the next Gathering.  The same goes for my new friends from Canada... thank you.

Mauricio and Maynard... Gracias and Salamat po for the 2x2 knife.  It was fast, hectic, and fun as hell.

Yes i missed not being there for a scrap.
I watched a local fma tournament, padded sticks. It just wasn't the same.

Bolvey... is that a play on Beowulf? the name of the king in 13th Warrior...one of my favorites.
That was actually on my list of names for my son. Instead i chose Thor...there time will come for stick fighting.

Brian_A,

Sunday was interesting for me because I had two folks from my training group in the crowd, and two fighters that train with my group mixing it up. After the Gathering, I was telling Night Owl and Poi Dog that I felt a MUCH greater sense of accountability to not make a fool out of myself out there. Usually, there's no one there to be accountable to except myself.  :-D

I found it impossible to fight AND watch my guys at all times.  As I fought, got water, got in line, talked to people, and tried to keep an eye on the guys from my group, it turned out that I saw most of your fights for the day. I have to say, again, that for a first Gathering, you had a GREAT day. Truly, I wish I had a 1st Gathering experience that looked more like yours.

GD

P.S. Again, NICE head shot!

Yes, Bolveys is a Latvianization of Bulvais.  The Beowulf epic poem is based on folklore of that region.  My parents are from Latvia (Baltic states in North Eastern Europe), and a similar legend exists in that area.

Thor is an excellent choice for a son's name.  More newborns should be named that way.  It's much more individualistic than being in a classroom of Aidens and Ashtons.

ha, i am a pretty emotional guy i guess, i look at the photos and i want to be there again.  i should smile.

i came home and i could hardly talk more than a whisper, thanks big steve and tom g for leaning on my throat!

i lay in bed last night and every time i swallowed my adams apple would move up and down and click, it s true, scared me for a bit but hey if i gotta go out this is better than diapers ;]  .

gints i was hoping to see you, sorry to have missed you.

i wish i was there still. i have a pretty good life here, family and friends even, but damn i had more hugs than fights, wtf am i supposed to do now? watch golf? go back to my cubicle and pretend thats important?

After this weekend, everything else is slow, which helps my painting, but seriously now.

i would like to thank all the people who talked to me, put up with me, and even those who ignored me, this is my second gathering, and hopefully one more of many, and this was a life goal for me.

i cant do this without you, an we cant do this without each other, thanks for allowing me to be a part of a bigger picture which means something.

i am rambling a bit so i will leave off fore i wax maudlin, as if i already haven't.

gonna finish my glass of fighting cock bourbon, true, and start training tonight for next year, not true.

This happened to me after a BJJ tournament a while back when I got RNC'ed Dan Severn Style and felt my trachia inside of my neck touch the back of my neck, . . .weird feeling.  In any event, it still clicks.  Let me know if you get this checked out and what the doc says!

I think there may be a Training injuries thread (or something like that) and if there isn't there should be.  Would you please post about the Severn RNC, what happened, and what was the aftermath?

TIA,

Woof, First things first.....Many thanks to Guro Crafty and Pretty Kitty for putting this on for us.
You guys are awesome! Also many thanks to all of you behind the scenes who do so much that we are not aware of.

Arkangel Phil, Sorry about your neck....but your a stuborn cuss! :-D I thought it would be a easy tap after I got the stick across your throat, but you held out for a long time and some considerable pressure. I actually tried to be slow and continue to until you tapped. I was amazed at what it took to get you. :-o  Ofcourse your built like a Mac truck with a neck like a tree trunk.

I was/am so Honored to make candidate dog brother, The feeling swells inside of me. Though as Guide dog stated, I too had two first time fighters with me and I watched with pride and concern as they fought.
I was real proud of their performances. Dan and Don.....You guys did awesome!

I hearty howl to all the first time fighters.....all of you guys to a man were tough and fought with a great dog brother spirit! WELL DONE!!

So much I could type and so many to woof at......Bottom line a IMHO a Great Gathering and a great time!

As a first time fighter I want to thank everyone from Guru Crafty and Pretty Kitty to all the other first timers. This was a great time for me and I truly feel like a new person since going through it. I also want to take the time and say thanks to Tom "C-Howling Dog" Guthrie for training me for the last year and a half.

I hope to see all of the fighters again soon at the next Gathering of the Pack!

There were three women who came with us to watch the Gathering.  My daughter is very comfortable with Dog Fighting (and in fact went around encouraging my opponents to hit me hard and often).  The other two (Roxy and Tracy) are not comfortable with fighting or violence, but they came away with some interesting observations.

Roxy focused on the mutal consent and the fact that the fighters purpose to was help each other improve.

Tracy was struck by the mixture of aggression and tenderness exhibited by the fighters.  She commented on a particular fight where one of the fighters had been hurt and his opponent knelt beside him and held his head to comfort him.

On a separate note, I would like to thank all my opponents for diligently following my daughters advice and especially to Lorenz for the epic beating (and for not hitting me again after he dropped me with that last shot).

Many thanks and congrats are in order.
Thanks to Guro Crafty and Pretty Kitty for putting on this event.

Thanks to Pappy Dog for finding this venue and the fighting surface(mats).  I thought we were going to have to fight on a bare court.

Thanks to the fighters who helped set up the chairs and mats.  It would have been a daunting task without all of your help.

Thanks to Lorenz for fighting aluminum knives with me.  Thanks for the additions to my scar collection.

Thanks and congrats to Al Romo. You fought well.  Thanks for not cracking my noggin when my hat was off.  Thanks for the additions to my bruise collection.

Congrats to Brian and Chuck, first timers from the NoHo crew.  It was fun watching you guys apply what we have taught you.

Finally, thanks to all of the fighters for showing up and doing what most people are unwilling to do. For it is the fighters that make a Gathering.

Here is what we think is a final draft of what will be going out in the e-newsletter:

Woof All:

As discussed at http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=1577.0  the
rhythm of the seasons of our Dog Brothers Gatherings is now as follows:

There are three Gatherings every year.

In early April we have "The Dog Brothers Tribal Gathering".  For these
there is only the fighters.  There is no audience.  These Gatherings are for
members of the Tribe.  The first one was held this year and in re-enactment
of the Creation Mythos of the Dog Brothers Tribe 20 years ago, once again
the fights were for three days.  The first of the days was in the Acu
Canyon Park in San Juan Capistrano where it all began what seems like only
yesterday so long ago.  Days two and three were in a horse corral on a
hillside in Temecula.  All three days were filmed by a 5 camera crew with
such films to its credit as the Grateful Dead movie and will figure
prominently in the Dog Brothers movie currently completing production.  The
basic concept of the movie is "Pumping Iron meets Tao of the Dog" wherein
the three days of fights serve the same function in the story arc as the
contest in South Africa did for "Pumping Iron".

Future Tribal Gatherings will be for two days.

In August we have "The Dog Brothers Open Gathering".  We chose August
because that is the big month for vacations in Europe and thus it is
easiest for our Euro brothers to come play.  This year, as will be described
more
fully in a moment, it took place on Sunday August 10th in Burbank,
California.

In late September or early October in Bern Switzerland we have "The Euro
Gathering".  This year it will be September 27th. Contact Guro Benjamin
"Lonely Dog" Rittiner at lonelydog@dogbrothers.ch

With the new overall rhythm of the seasons established, it is time to turn
to the events of this past Sunday.

After the decade in the Hermosa Park we spend several agreeable years at
the RAW Gym in El Segundo.  Then we held the Gathering at what was Original
Productions soundstage for the TV show "Monster Garage" for the Gathering
that was the focus of the National Geographic documentary "Fight Club"
(hideous name I know, I know, but my objections were overruled).  OP kindly
let us do another Gathering there, but with their renovation of the space
into offices, this option no longer was available.

The search for a new space was on.  This is not an easy matter.  Indeed,
finding a place for a Dog Brothers Gathering is a really good trick.  Not
only do we need a distinctive type of space, but our budget is limited, and
most places will freak out when they are given to understand the nature of
the event.  As detailed in the saga on the thread at
http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=1484.0 we were coming scarily
close to Gathering day without a place being lined up.  Fortunately Pappy
Dog put his nose to the ground and via his friend Eric Fleischman sniffed
out the Powerhouse Gym of Burbank, CA.  Eric, a long time fan of the DBs,
is held in good repute at Powerhouse and put in the word on our behalf with
the owner Tisto Chapman and conversations came to a fruitful conclusion.

Thus it came to pass that this past Sunday, at 11:00 on August 10th we held
our annual "Dog Brothers Open Gathering of the Pack" at the Powerhouse Gym
of Burbank, California.

The space in question is a large basketball court with a rubberized floor
and padding on the walls behind the baskets.  The fight area consisted of a
30x30 area of puzzle type mats kindly provided by Pappy Dog, which were set
so that a padded wall comprised one of the four sides of the fight area to
enable crashing the fights into the wall.  Eric and Pappy also managed to
line up a goodly number of folding chairs so that most of the audience was
able to sit.  Those of you who remember the days at RAW will appreciate
this detail!  Speaking of the audience, at about 220 it was the biggest one
we
have had since we left the Hermosa Park.  In the past we have had to keep
things down a bit out of concern for the limitations of the facility, but
with Powerhouse we have plenty of room to grow.  Also a big plus is the
sturdy air conditioning system!

At forty one fighters this was one of the largest Gatherings on record
(fifty fighters were registered, but apparently at the last minute there
was a bit of a vaginitis virus going around , , ,).

As those of you who have followed us for some time know, we begin the day
with knife fighting-- sometimes playfully called "sport knife dueling".  As
discussed at http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=376.0 the
problem is that when the knives are not real, typically neither is the
behavior--
with of course much room for difference of opinion as to what constitutes
realistic behavior; after all when two hostile people have knives, we are
told that the likeliest outcome is that one of them runs away LOL.

Whatever the case, the problem is that of what is often called "knife
boxing" wherein the two men merrily pummel each other away.  Mockery by me
directed to the crowd such as "You're both dead!" usually gets a smile and
near zero change in behavior.  Even aluminum trainers, which facilitate the
imposition of more pain, have made little difference.  The past couple of
years we have gone to the "Shocknives" (see our video clip endorsing them
at http://shocknife.com/video.html )  I like the Shocknives-- they DO make a
difference!  There are some limitations though:  a) Even though we get ours
for free, for most people even with the newer models which cost less, they
cost a lot. b) with the Neanderthals that we tend to attract, we have still
have people who ignore them c) they burn through batteries really fast.

With the April Tribal Gathering and this Gathering we think we may have
finally come up with a solution:  aluminum trainers that size of a small
(or not so small) bowie knife.  Whatever the shape/design of the blade, the
heft of the aluminum bar makes not only substantial pain but also for the
risk
of broken bones, especially in the hand, wrist and forearm-- which leads to
more realistic behavior.

The fights with the big aluminum trainers as well as some of the Shocknife
fights at this Gathering really stepped up to the level that we have been
looking for.  Also exciting was the one 2x2 fight.  Newcomer Mauricio
Sanchez of Mexico City, Mexico showed outstanding situational awareness by
breaking off from his opponent several times to ambush the man fighting his
partner from behind.  In the chaos of the fight it was hard to tell if
anyone actually "lived", but both the crowd and the fighters had a fine
time.  With several of the fights I started the fighters with the knives
"hidden" (typically tucked in the waistband somewhere) and shaking hands.
When I released their clasped hands, the fight was on.  I encouraged each
to attack the other before drawing his knife, but this occurred only one
time-- with great success I might add!

With the knife fights over, it was time for stick.  In that I have not yet
received the actual footage from cameraman Night Owl, I will mostly have to
go with general impressions.

First:   The level of aggression and courage was very high, even amongst
the many newcomers and less experienced fighters.  Even with this level of
aggression, the consciousness of the Dog Brothers code was consistently
present.

Second:  I was quite pleased to see many fighters embracing drawing hidden
knives and putting them into play when fights went to clinch.  This is
something I have been pushing for for several years now, and it is very
satisfying to see this finally take root.  A Dog Brothers Gathering is not
really about young male ritual hierarchical combat.  For most there it is
about preparing, to borrow the DBMA mission statement, "to walk as a
warrior for all your days".  What we install in the depth of the adrenal
state is,
for better or worse, perhaps the deepest of all learnings.  In my opinion,
it is vital to transcend the mind of the BJJ mat and the MMA cage to train
ourselves in this state to always be monitoring the hands for movements
that can serve to access weapons!!!

This also includes the matter of accessing one's own weapons.  At present
this mostly consists of sticking an aluminum trainer at 4:00-6:00, or under
the shirt at 2:00 (reverse the numbers for lefties).   With a glove on
(more on the gloves shortly) this can be a good trick-- so particular kudos
to
the man who wore pants so that he had pockets into which to put his actual
folding trainer so that he could actually work what he would actually have
to access in the real world.  Important data was acquired when the handle
of the knife actually broke upon impact :-o !

Third:  Although it is quite common for many fighters to fight only 1-3
fights, in this Gathering we had many fighters who fought many fights.
Not only is this an impressive display of fighting spirit, but also of
conditioning-- one notes that the latter tends to support the former!

Fourth:  The trend to ultralight gloves continues.  Many fighters are
wearing
gloves that serve only to protect from gratering on the fencing masks, but
offer  little to no protection from impact.  A hearty woof of respect!

Fifth: As a fan of double stick I would have liked to have seen more
double stick fights, but the ones that were had were very good.  C-Straw
Dog and Mauricio Sanchez had one that caught my eye.

Sixth:  Some random impressions:

Able to easily pace lesser opponents and step up as necessary with the more
challenging one, Pappy Dog showed understated polish and skill in his
fights.  On his 50th birthday "Dog Pound" at a svelte 265 (down from 305)
had a rocking fight with Lorenz Glaza.  War Dog returned to the DB wars
after a couple of years of MIA due to getting started as a LEO and looked
as
good as ever.  Guide Dog, off a tremendous showing in Temecula and a broken
foot since then, was able to do quite well anyway.  C-Straw Dog continues
as
one of the fighters who shows strong stick skills.  Dog Tom represented us
old folks quite well.  Dog Dean showed both skill and an extra measure of
warrior spirit by fighting with a knee that was already scheduled for
surgery.  Dog Mat showed that the growth from the Temecula Gathering is
yielding strong fruit.  First timer Rene Cocolo of Toronto, Ontario, Canada
had an excellent cherry performance, including one fight with strong boxing
blast type punches that drove his opponent across the fight area.  Fellow
old-timer Steve Gruhn as usual dove in with gusto until what may be a torn
hamstring laid him low. Canadian Phil Hurcum showed several nice roof to
belly thrusts in one of his many fights as well as considerable joie de
combat.  As usual Mark Mosquiera was in the mix, and first timer Mauricio
Sanchez of Mexico showed excellent double stick in his fight with C-Straw
Dog.  Dog Eric Bryant continues to bring scary kicking skill to his stick
skills-- he's the kind of man who can easily kick someone in the head
before they see it coming-- and so he does.

New djembe drummer "Yumi" (christened "Yumi the Yummy" by one wag in
attendance) did a fine job of providing pulse to the proceedings without
drowning out the action.  Part way through the day she was assisted
spontaneously and quite capably by a man whose name I don't remember
without reviewing the video.  Our usual Master of Arms and Timekeeper
James Stacey was otherwise engaged but his students Mike and Brian stepped
in nicely. Of particular importance was Dog Dean Webster who not only was
quite busy as a fighter, but also served as EMT.  Ascensions to and within
the
Dog Brothers Tribe can be found at
http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=784.50

Both Powerhouse and we were very happy with each other and look forward to
a long-term relationship.

In closing, as we return to our semi-normal lives I would like to quote
Phil Hurcum at
http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/index.php?topic=1484.150 (where you can find
comments from other fighters as well)

To my eye, the seemingly unpolished writing speaks eloquently of the
altered state that comes from this experience.

As the saying goes, "Intelligence is the amount of time it takes to forget
a lesson".  Carry the lessons of this experience forward with you and
walk as a warrior for all your days.  No judges!  What others think of
you is none of your business.  No referees!  Even in the aggressive
adrenal state you are responsible for what you do.  No trophies!  This
is not for the roar or the adulation of others.  This is for the you who
you are in the silence of a stick buzzing by your head-- in the moment
you decide just which self it is you wish to defend.

consciousness through harder contact" (c)

I lost the recording so I can't find his name, but there was a guy that was used in the "Taboo" episode that featured Gints club.  He talked about how the fighting experience sensitizes the fighters to violence because they became more aware of the consequences of aggression.

That would be Peter Andrada.  I believe that he fought in a red shirt with a white flower pattern.

The show is National Geographic Taboo : Proving Grounds from 2007.  It reairs periodically, but it appears that the new 2008 season also includes a different show with the same Proving Grounds title.

The shock knife accounts read well.  What kind of crazies do this?   Or, rather, why do some men still refuse to be wimps?

The sociologist was kinda tame.  Wouldn't a rabid feminist do better?  Sure, the Gathering shares some similarity to the wilderness wild" expeditions in the 60' to 70's I've only read about.  The big difference is that the Gathering is Man vs. Man , not Man vs. The Elements.

Overall, it's great press. The article appears to have traveled around the world.  Just Google for:  US Fight Club

I had a chance to watch the Nat. Geo. special last night. It was the first time I have seen it since after actually fighting in the Gathering, so I made sure to actually pay attention to the anthropologists and psycologists. I was amazed at their reasons for us fighting! I told my wife that I didn't think there was a single guy out there that was fighting to prove their "manhood". My wife asked me why did I fight. My answer was a) to test my skills in a real fight B) to be able to better defend her and our family. I know that I am a litltle late on posting this (like a year) but the shrinks have us pegged completly wrong. Just my two cents.

After years of having to answer the question "Why do I do this?" , I do say it is to prove my manhood, to myself and others.  An assumption of manhood is that you can defend yourself and your loved ones, so you're out there to prove to this yourself.  While a small % of women are able to do this, almost all of full contact fighting, firearms, weightlifting and other physical domination training is the domain of the male.  Why?  Because men are expected to assume the protective, even on the very first date !

Given that crime is at a historical low in the USA and the chances of you ever needing these skills is nearly zero, why else do you think you do this?

How does a man prove his manhood and superiority?
Traditionally:
Physical dominance
- war, fist fights, combat sports
Social dominance- more friends, friends of higher caliber, lots of attractive female friends, etc
Financial dominance- more money, bigger car, bigger house, etc
Intelllectual dominance- higher learning, degrees, etc

I don't see anything wrong with an individual aspiring or training for those reasons stated. I find great worth in an individual who would like to better themselves instead of settling. What I find ever more worthy and rare are individuals who do it with integrity.

A primary reason i train and have been at a few stick-fights are for the higher learning that comes with the ability to exude my will through skill over another trained adversary.

Hello everyone. Jesse Aarons from Arkangel Martial Arts, hailing from Vancouver, BC, Canada here.

I just wanted to thank everyone that came out to this event and a special thanks to the people I fought. It was an amazing time that I will always remember. Thanks to Eric for letting us use the gym and thanks to Guro Mark Denny for putting on this event time and again. I and the rest of us are very much looking forward to coming back again.

For fun, to test me skills, to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. I don't do this to go out and thump my chest and say I am a man. On the other side of the coin I have to admit that it feels good to know that I have gone and "passed" my trial by fire while others are still point sparring. It does "prove my manhood" but it is not the reason I went to fight.

Hello  Forum. Mark Mosqueira giving a loud bark to Clan & others.I want to Thank all of the warriors that kicked my Ass at the Aug 10 gathering!!!! I had a bruise the size of Florida on my left hip & a beautiful black eye complements of Cory Davis ( Great right hook) Bro. I have to say that all the so called experts trying to explain WHY we do this have no clue & would do well to jump in the mix to explain WHY.WHY? WHY the F not. Every body has there own reasons for battle. Some of us want to belong. Some of us want to test our skills. Some of us over come fear. Some of us just like to hit & be hit. What ever the reason WHY we do this can not be explained by EXPERTS that have no clue what its like to be HIT by a stick!!!!!! The stick & steel are a  powerful tools. We are not a clan of chest thumping Neanderthals looking to beat each other into a bloody pulp were just a group of artists that are in search of truth.Truth is a vast word!!!!! Every body wants to find the meaning of existence.  If you don't know why you must search for the truth. The stick dose not tell lies, when you get hit you know the truth. We are on this plane for a short time
and  most will only find the meaning WHY @ the moment of our death but i need answers f-in now & getting hit is one step closer to the truth. I'm proud to be associated with what ever the public wants to call us  (crazy, psychos with sticks,Neanderthals, ect.)I want to feel alive & the DB gives me a venue to express my self through good old ASS KICKIN. You don't need a sociobiology degree to answer the question WHY you just need to get hit with 1 inch rattan & all is clear.THE STICK ALWAYS TELLS THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!  Lookin forward to my next beat down.MUCH LUV!!!! WOOF WOOF.

The Reuters coverage of our Gathering has been picked up around the world.  Although it has mostly tapered off by now, here's a new one that chuckled me:

Glad to see things going well for the dogbrothers org.  I have been focused on my new F.E.M.A inspector gig. Actually I am on call as I speak and expect to be deployed soon after hurricane "IKE" hits the U.S.  As soon as these storms settle, I will have more time to start training and who knows, maybe another gathering left in this old man?
