I'm heading into massive surgery to repair the damage from the last "Open" Gathering this June 21st. Will be having 2 specialist rebuild my right Pec, Reconnect my right Biceps tendon, and my right rotator cuff. They say it will be 7 months in rehab. I've always been a quick healer. It will at least allow me to work on my Left hand. If I am "healed" but lack strength, I hope to be at this one too if I am able. "Fight with what you got" is what I say, and do it is long and often as you can.

Hey all,

We have an official list of registered fighters at:
http://dogbrothers.com/?page_id=31

Scroll to the bottom and you'll see the list.  If you're name isn't on it, I haven't yet rec'd your registration.

I'm going on vacation on July 6th and won't get back until the Aug 14th.  If you mail or fax something to me during this time, I'll get to it when I get back.  If you want to take care of it while I'm traveling it's best to email it to me in jpg or pdf format.  Then I can add you to the list.

Thanks!
Cindy

P.S.  If you do PDF, fax, or JPG it to me, please also send me the signed original

I like to see the list growing. Now, to get the California "casually late" people, and the "on the fence" guys/girls to get in a commit. I'm still ramped up from the Tribal and am bringing my "A" game as always to the fights. My (post Op surgery) shoulder hurts, but not as much as the pain I would feel from sitting and watching. NoHo is going to represent well in honor of our leader Pappy Dog being absent and deployed to Afganistan. Haven't seen any of our Canadian brothers on the list...hmmm, whatcha waiting for? I plan on taking the shirt right off your back :)

WOOF! C-Mighty Dog

Hahaha! I didn't think you'd chime in Dr. Rick, the Toro and NoHo has a "smack-talk" contest before each Gathering. Don't worry, I'm saving a lil something for you too :), make sure you bring your best dancing shoes, cuz it we're using the whole floor. Crafty asked me to post here to get you guys from falling asleep.

Me too C-Gong Fu Dog! The Open Gathering is not like the Tribal, it's more caotic and some what "zoo" like. Like the Euro Open I would imagine...many fighters coming for the first time with little to no stick experience do "dance" and see if they like it. The good part is seeing some of those with no experience come back a year later with some Stick fighting abilities because they realize that they should get a teacher, or train harder. See you in May!

Woof C-Mighty Dog!  I've been a little worried......

Do you think that my wearing one of your custom masks will be too great an advantage when we fight?
I'd hate for you to have mixed emotions about hitting hard against your own handiwork
Let me know if I should bring an alternate mask - I'd hate for you to feel conflicted!
Looking forward to September!

Thanks for your consideration Dr. Rick! Don't worry, I don't feel like I'm beating up one of my "children" :). I really look forward to our double stick fight. I've been really working my left and it's about 75% of my Right side now. I'm pretty excited to see how much more I can progress in the next 2 months. This will be my first "scrap" with doubles in a Gathering. Poi mentioned that he is looking forward to the staff fight with you. Just like last year, you certainly are NOT having "cake-walk" fights. Props to you bro! Other then you, my other 4 fights are with Full Dogs. Gotta earn my way to full acsention. Look forward to seeing you again Woof!

C-Mighty Dog, I'm happy to hear that your recovery goes so well and that you will be dancing in September again!

Well, I'm not sure if I like the fact that your left hand is almost as good as your right one-Cause that means that you will definitely hit me with both hands   :-)

On the other hand this is a good motivation to train my 3SS game even more  :-)

But, Like Crafty stated earlier...I may come to regret my generous gift to you. Now that it's been wielded with some power, and has broken some bones, it surely is a formidable weapon. I can't wait for the "re-match" bro. I'm developing a unique combo for next Tribal....The cane and nunchukus. I made a pair of "chucks" out of the K.I.L. rattan last night, and plan on having K.I.L. make me a Cane out of the same material.

So, in the interest of keeping up the training motivation...here's my dance card :
1) Tobias Gibson, knife warmups
2) Jason Jones, single stick
3) Steve "Iron Dog" Shelton, single stick
4) Toki "C-Mighty Dog" Rembrandt, double stick
5) Roan "Poi Dog" Grimm, staff

Insurance is paid up and I'll have folks there to take me to the hospital

b4)  *** Maybe double stick  vs Staff

Kaju,

I would enjoy doing a double vs. double with no grappling or a staff vs. double with you, regardless of who is on staff and who is on double. Last public Gathering, we had a strep throat scare in the family so I didn't want to expose anyone to that and the last tribal, my son passed on a wonderfully nasty stomach bug to everyone in the house. I've been away for a year and am excited to step back out there in September (knock on something...)

This will be my first Gathering so I have NO IDEA what I am getting myself into except watching clips on youtube.

It looks like most fights are scheduled at the event on the spot as opposed to in here?

Tips from the experienced folks are appreciated.

Oops almost forgot.

Gear-  I have read and seen where folks are using a fencing mask and hockey gloves is that correct?  Are there any particular types of masks and gloves you folks would recommend, my fencing knowledge is a little down...lol

I am curiosu about the stick types used also but I will research that before asking a stupid question in here...

Thanks again

Some who have fought in the past will often fill up their "dance cards' with fights already arranged whether for a rematch or out of curiousity. If you are "new", you will need to walk up to someone and ask for a fight. Don't sit there and wait.

Make sure that you have a Cup, knee pads and elbow pads (non plastic) and a fencing mask. Be prepared to get hit. Try to get 4 fights in, make the first one a knife fight (it will help work out the nerves)

I take it that you are not a FMA practioner. "Dianhshe" reminds me of a Kara-Ho person. At any rate, the Hockey gloves are not actually hockey gloves aas they are too padded and some have a plastic thumb cover (no, no) You can buy all your gear, Mask, Gloves and Stick through www.bloodsport.com  This is Pappy Dog's company (Kombat Instruments Limited). You will also need a mouth piece. Since we are having it at last years venue. You will need a pair of wrestling shoes that have NOT been on the street.

Barefeet is fine. Just a reminder though....there is no "off limits" target (well, other then the back of the head intentionaly). I've broken a foot(through the shoe) with a foam stick before. The bare feet..or any feet ...is a target. I suggest that you training, fight, run and do other activities while wearing your mask in order to get used to the vision, view or lack thereof. Also, since this is your FIRST fight, and you are Kara-ho, it would be in your best interest to attend Crafty's DBMA stick camp on the 12-14 of Aug so you have an understanding of how the stick is used in the hands of a Dog Brother or Kali person rather then the world of Kempo.

Just chiming in here.  I'd like to encourage my fellow veteran fighters ("Dog" and up) to try and get in a fight with at least one cherry fighter.  As the "veterans", I think a large part of our tribal responsibility is to bring new fighters into the fold, and to lead by example what we expect of fighters within the tribe.  I can certainly understand why many of us put in iPods to listen to music (to "find-the-zone/silence-the-chatter/cool-mystical-deep-phrase-of-choice"), but I'd like to encourage our tribe members to reach out to the newbies.  Engage them in conversation and help them get over their chatter, as it is likely MUCH louder for them.  We've "been there, done that" so to speak, and we're back, so we can help them find the same joy we find in the mutual testing.

Knowing that most of us prefer to challenge ourselves, we often overlook the newer fighters because we are looking to fight at or near the edge of our limits.  To compensate, you can always handicap yourself - a lighter stick, a 1st gen mask, lighter gloves, fighting with the complementary hand, etc. to ensure you're making things challenging.  I truly believe that if we really commit to this challenge, we will strengthen the tribe exponentially over time.  We stand only to gain.  As with the vast majority of things I post online, this is just my $.02.  Thanks for reading, and now, please bear with me as I climb down off of my soapbox...

Okay, having rambled on through that, I am looking to set up a fight or 2 here on the forum.  I've already got my staff fight with Doc set, I'd also like to set up either an espada y daga, a single stick, a double stick, and/or a knife-v-'weapon of opportunity' (rolled up magazine).  I'm going to keep most of my single sticks fights open for cherry fighters.  Yes - I know this is an ambitious line-up, but God/Fate/Nothing willing, I'll manage (fingers/toes/eyes crossed).  Any takers? Look forward to seeing y'all in September.  :-D

Poi-Dog:  If you are volunteering to school some newbies I would love to make that list.

Thanks to Mighty-Dog for the advice.  Shoes, got it- We teach many weapons in Kara-Ho but the stick is not one (or two) of them.  I have only attended a couple of seminars maybe 15 years ago.  I am not going to be able to attend the upcoming camp, I already tried to make that happen...I am fully aware that I am fresh meat at this event-  :-o

Still VERY much looking forward to the higher learning, painful as it may be.

Gloves-  I have full gauntlet motorcycle roadracing gloves that seem to have as much if not more protection than some of the gloves used at the event, are they acceptable?

The motorcycle gloves are ok, but if the Full Guantlet has Plastic or Carbon Fiber on the knuckles or near to it, it's a no go.

I sent my fighter registration form via fax almost two weeks ago.  I've been keeping an eye on the official list in hopes of confirming that it was received.  I appreciate that Pretty Kitty has her hands full.  Should I re-send / re-fax it in?

PS
Poi Dog,
I would love a rematch.  I think the last time you and I crossed sticks was at the corral   See you all soon.  :-D

The Days Before A Fight
February 13, 2009 By admin Leave a Comment
written by Marc “Crafty Dog” Denny

The days before the fight are always a powerful crucible. I have a non-martial art teacher who when someone seeks to leave a situation that makes them uncomfortable says, “Whatever you do, keep on being here in this moment.” I may not have the quote exactly right, but I hope I have the gist of it.

Scientist Konrad Lorenz’s book “Behind the Mirror” addresses the evolutionary biology of consciousness. There is a passage in the book wherein he describes how a cat at play will seamlessly string together unrelated behaviors/movements from stalking prey, fighting a rival, bluffing a predator, courtship, killing prey etc. He then points out that the instant that the cat is stressed (e.g. the appearance of a rival) this ability disappears.

Many martial arts discuss how there are different mindsets/qualities with which one can defend/fight. Often the names are a bit poetic; Fire, Water, Wind, Rock, Earth, etc. but the point is made that the more realized the fighter is, the better his ability to fluidly shift between them. In the intense adrenal state of a fight, this can be a very good trick to actually do, yet as Lorenz’s point about the cat makes clear, the state of Play is the state where this happens best. (“What Is Play?” in evolutionary biological terms is an interesting question in its own right.) Thus, the best fight is where the fight is play. Thus in Dog Brothers Martial Arts we say

“Do not have a Way as you Play. Fight the Way you Play. Let your Fight be Play” (c)

The Learning that takes place in the adrenal state is some of the deepest and highest that there is. (The adrenal state of course can be triggered by many things, not only immediate physical danger; criticism by loved ones, humiliation, etc etc.) The greater the adrenal state, the profounder the Learning. The greater the state of Play, the better the result. The more that one can move in both directions simultaneously, the better. “The greater the dichotomy, the profounder the transformation. Higher consciousness through harder contact.” (c)

well, I love to Fight and Play at the same time and hope to get much better at it. Thanks Crafty Dog.

Poi Dog- Thanks for the Humbling reminder of bringing the "new" into the fold. It is easy to think of yourself and how to further your progression through selected opponents.
NoHo has 5 "cherry" fighters too, and it woud be good that they got as much out of this experience as possible (other then survival of course). So, I have an opening for additional fights if my body holds up. Here's my agenda:
1) I have a difficult knife rematch with Growling Dog (last year, he managed to puncture my chest with a good stab, I grew a 3rd boob)
2) I have a Double Stick with Dr. Doom
3) Lefty stick fight with Howling Dog
4) Cane verses weapon of choice (no fighter yet)
5) Single stick with "newbie"

Poidog  I will take it!  I appreciate you folks spending some time on us newbies and look forward to the event!

C-Mighty Dog told me to start with a knife fight to get my "nerves" in order, would you recommend I pick another newbie for this?  Where am I likely to get the biggest benefit against a Dog Bro- single stick?

I am down for anything and looking to get the most out of this experience.  I would like to bring my "chucks" but as a newbie I do not how realistic all of this is.  I will probably get the crap kicked out of me in the first fight...

find someone who will fight with the knife as if it were a "real" knife. Most Dog Brothers are good at this, but some "newbies" might also. I was "new" and still am in comparison. But have always "respected" the blade. Simply start conversation about it, you can also set "rules" such as ....no going to the ground on a knife fight. Many new fights tend to Crash and then it becomes a wrestling match with whatever weapon they're fighting with, rather then test the weapon itself.
Tried sending you a PM but your email is full.

Will do thanks!  When I said realistic I meant my physical ability to have a fight with the chucks, since it would be my 3rd fight minimum and I may be TOAST by then.

And I may as well ask what is "the parable of the cherry"?

I'm in the mood to take my inner smart-a$$ out for a walk, so please indulge me. For those new folks planning on fighting in September, just show up and be mentally present. The rest will take care of itself. What follows is me just being silly; please don't take any of this seriously.

Guide Dog's Advice for "Winning" at a Dog Brother's Gathering

1. When you arrive at the Gathering site, be sure to push a few people in line out of the way, even though Pretty Kitty or who ever is working the door will usually stop the line for the fighters. Does anyone really remember Apollo Creed from the Rocky movies? No way! We remember Mr. T's Clubber Lang, and why? Because he was an a$$hole. Act accordingly.

2. When Guro Crafty is giving the same pre- fight speech he always gives, make sure you are listening to your I-pod. After all, the day is really about you and you alone.

3. When the camera comes around to you and you have to say your name and your age, make sure that you use your title of "Super Grandmaster Founder" before doing so.

4. Before the fighting starts, make a point to not speak to anyone, especially the other fighters. This will really cultivate your air of mystery and cause everyone in the room to fear and respect you.

5. Be sure before your knife fights to specify that your opponent is not allowed to use any grappling, slashes, thrusts, punching, kicking, lead switches, or fakes. This is after all a simulation of a knife fight! If you score a lethal shot in exchange for your opponent scoring a lethal shot a half second later, that is a major victory.

6. Be sure to inspect any potential opponent's stick(s). First, measure the weapon, then quickly run it through an X-ray filter. Demand that your opponent provide the name of the manufacturer of the stick, as well as the forms to indicate that the weapon(s) cleared customs in a legal fashion if the sticks were not made in America. Once the weapon(s) has/have been deemed legitimate, escort your potential opponent to the restroom where you will verify his/her weight and height, and obtain a urine sample. Do not take any fights with anyone who weighs more than five pounds than you do, or is more than three inches taller than you, as doing so is simply NOT how it is going to be in the street. After all, MMA has weight classes, and MMA is as close as it gets to real combat. If the urine sample comes back positive for caffeine, call off the fight. You do not associate with people who use performance enhancing drugs.

7. If someone does manage to make it through your screening process and you agree to a stick fight, be sure that when on deck, you are drawing as much attention to yourself as possible, almost making it impossible for anyone to watch the fight in progress. You are, after all, NEXT, and everyone better damn well know it. Be sure to say some really personal, inappropriate, profanity-laden comments about your opponent just before you put your mouthpiece in and fencing mask on. Dog Brothers is all about stress testing; your opponent will thank you for pointing out that his wife is a fat whore, because that will cause him to really lose his temper and if he still happens to be breathing after your fight having come in seething with rage, than you have given him a great gift.

8. If you do score a shot, and your opponent waves you off to indicate the fight is over, by all means, hit him/her as hard as you can anyway. STRIKE HARD! STRIKE FAST! NO MERCY, SIR!

9. When the fight is over, if your opponent attempts to give you a hug, ESPECIALLY if you are male, eye-jab the prick! Let all the ladies in the house know that you are STRAIGHT, STRAIGHT, STRAIGHT. Even though you just got done doing a real contact stick fight, hugging someone of the same gender sends the wrong message. Showing that you are a nice person gives you about as much street cred as a 10 year-old girl showing off her Kelly Clarkson CD collection.

10. When the day's fights are over, immediately demand that you are the first in line for a tribal ascension, particularly if it is your first day fighting, and particularly if you only had one stick fight, did not sustain any injuries, but decided to call it a day as a "favor" to the other fighters.

11. At each level: dog, C-dog, and full DB, the moment after Guro Crafty asks you to rise, make sure you shout, "Where's my fu&%in' belt????!!!!"

12. When you do make full DB, demand that Top Dog go back to simply "Eric Knaus", because it's pretty clear that you are the real Top Dog in the group.

13. Each day, send Guro Crafty an E-mail reminding him that you are still waiting for your Tuhonship in DBMA, and as a mere Guro, he needs to get moving on that sh&%!  :-D

I'm glad you liked it, guys. In all seriousness, I think it's the average tribe member's sense of humor that is unique to this organization. I have laughed harder at DB Gatherings and events than at practically any other martial arts event. There's another piece of advice to all new fighters: smile and laugh once you get in your first few fights and your nerves settle. It's really important because once you get out of your own way in terms of nerves, or any ego-related issues, stick fighting is fun!

I'd add for first timers, try and get your first fight in early in the day.

If you sit watching, waiting for a long time for your first fight, those butterflies can really churn up your insides.  Once you get your first fight out of the way and realise that you're still alive and have all your limbs, you will feel much better.

Dogs,

I also am a noob who will have his cherry popped (with a big stick) at this Gathering.

I'd appreciate any of you experienced fighters who'd like to mentor me (again, with a big stick) saving a slot for me on your fight card.

I don't really have a lot of martial arts or fighting experience but I've been working with the Noho clan since the last Gathering.

I guess, per the advice above, that I'm looking for a knife duel to warm up then some single stick fights but since I don't know what I don't know I'm up for anything.

Great Challenge HD! However, please don't do what happened in the current Euro Gathering, where 60 some fighters registered and only 45 showed. This is a reflection of your characture. If you are on the fence, register and do a knife fight, you will find the courage later to do a stick fight. But don't register just to see your name on the "marquee", then bail. Many "newbees" are looking for like-minded individuals to share in the first time experience. Others, like the current Dogs, C-Dog, and Full Dogs are reserving 1 dance to help the others through this rather "transformational" experience. I see many registered "bloggers" here on the forum, and a couple thousand on Facebook, I can't see why we couldn't have one of the largest attended Gatherings ever. So... put on a fresh pair of panties, hike up your trousers, and slap on so Old Spice and man-up!

As a "cherry" fighter it seems to me that part of the learning/growing/finding the truth is the time leading up to the event.  I will be honest I have woken up every morning with butterflies in my stomach and every time I leave the gym I wonder if I did enough compared to the folks I will be stepping out with.

I am already learning about myself- I will consider getting up there and stepping onto the mat a small victory in itself.

The other night I was showing a few of the DBMA videos to my fiance when she noticed me kind of fidgeting on the couch.  She said are you okay?  I said "they call it chatter". LOL

I'm planning to attend this year and figure it can't hurt to set up some fights in advance.  That's what I did the first time -- but just showed up and played it by ear last year.  Seems like a mixture is standard, so if anyone wants to pre-arrange, let me know.  I'm open to possibilities, mainly considering combinations of:

+ single stick
+ staff
+ knife / no-knife
+ grappling / no-grappling

In other words, a prearranged stick-with-grappling-but-no-knife would work -- as would other combinations of those parameters.  I'm also vaguely open to the idea of a mismatched/asymmetrical fight -- like staff vs stick.  Or even maybe stick vs no-stick or knife.  However, that's only a tentative idea, and I'm not sure how productive it would be given my experience level.  Maybe next year.  Likewise, I'm open to fighting those with or without experience, but I won't claim any refined ability to break a newbie in -- being only a tad more than a newbie myself.

A Shared Reflection of a newbee.

Up until my first Gathering, I had trained for nearly 35 years in the Martial Arts. I had fought in Kickboxing and Full Contact Karate for many of those years. Was this enough training? Well, Kickboxing, Full Contact Karate, and dare I say... MMA, although considered "fighting" is really high intensity sparring. Ask any Boxer what happens if he goes ALL OUT in the first round to get the knock-out, he will quickly burn-out. There is a pacing required to last the necessary rounds,  not to mention weight classes and rules.

I had trained 1 full year with the famed NoHo Clan before attempting to fight. Much was needed to learn regarding the weapon and how to use it, along with the footwork necessary in the full adrenal state. As, I WATCHED my first Gathering, which was a Tribal, I was amazed, and frightened at the same time. I had pushed Pappy Dog to let me fight in the Tribal, but after consulting with Crafty Dog, they thought it best that I attended an Open Gathering before stepping forward with the Dog Brothers. This was a wise decision, as I grew so much in the coming month in regards to skill.

As the weeks approached before my first Open Gathering, I started to train as I did when I previously competed..lots of road work, 15 miles a week, stairs, and swinging a stick. Then for the frightening part, sparring with bare sticks. They were the pencil thin type that was "whippy" and would cut into you when struck. These hurt ALOT! I remember thinking..what can I wear underneath my shorts in regards to padding that no one would know..the football padded spandex shorts? How could I protect in fingers from getting injured and/or broken...can I put plastic inside my gloves?

How many layers of shirts can I wear to absorb the impact without looking like the kid on "Christmas Story"? Panic and concern hit me. What I realized was that I was NOT going in to Spar but rather a Scrap..a Fight. I had 2 minutes to hit the guy as hard as I could and put him down before he did the same to me.

The night before the Gathering, my heart raced as I visualized the fights...this was NOT good for the rest that I needed.  I showed up early to help with setup. I was trying to calm my nerves. Had I trained enough? Will I fight and represent NOHO well? Will I get knocked out? I ended the day with 2 knife fights and 2 stick fights...I was Transformed. I didn't require to be dressed up like a Hockey player, I didn't need "special" protection. I just needed the balls to do it. What I've learn AFTER that was how to relax and enjoy the experience. Once I was able to do that, the years of previous training became easier for me to access, as I was no longer in the "reactive" state of mind.

During dinner one night at Dog Brothers camp, a guy asked about injuries and how we rebound from them and why we fight. Crafty turned towards me and said "ask Toki, he is healing from an injury, he Never turns down a fight and will fight men a foot taller and 100 lbs heavier..ask him why he fights". As I started to explain and somewhat intellectually ramble..what I should have said is that ..I couldn't imagine the pain of simply watching my fellow Dog Brothers fight without me. I think that pain is deeper then any physical pain that I endure. It is also the motivation to heal for the next Gathering.

Woof!!! See you on the mat! C-"Mighty Dog"

C-Mighty Dog, your explanation about your motivation was amongst my favorite memories of the Training Camp.  I thought you discussed the sense of remaing true to self and to your fellow warriors in a way that really connected with me, and I suspect many others who sat at the table with you.
Title: To name a thing is to give it power...
Post by: Point Dog on August 20, 2011, 01:13:32 AM
Advice that I would give cherries.

Whilst it's important that we understand the psychological aspects of our pre-fight experience, it's important that we don't direct our energies in the wrong direction.

When you give something a name ('The Chatter') you give it a kind of coporeal power over you, but also by naming it, you CAN gain a power over it.  The level of pre-fight chatter you experience depends on many things, most importantly where your 'pre-set adrenalinekick in level' is.

How to combat chatter.  Firstly, don't give it power over you!  Accept it as a necessary and vital part of your existance.  I'm fortunate in that for all my athletic flaws, I'm very good at visualisation.  Find some quiet alone time and let the idea of your fight wash over your mind, identify the aspects that concern you the most, then work on these.  Preparation, be physically fit, and with regards to technical skill I find having a small toolbox but knowing each tool intimately is better than having the worlds largest collection of technique.  Put the time into figuring out how a strike you're good at works against a stalker, a runner, a speed merchant.

Also, if you're in a training group, a Gathering shouldn't, IMHO, be the first place you have a fight.  Of the UK clans, nobody who is a decendant of the 'Yoda Clan' will go to a Gathering a total cherry, it just doesn't happen.  The effect of fighting in front of a crowd (spectators/other fighters) should not be ignored.  Going to a quiet park/squash court with limited spectators should be on your pre-fight agenda (but make sure it's more than 6 weeks before the Gathering!).

I see many who convince themselves that they should have chatter and develop an even worse case of it than they would have otherwise done.  Chill, relax, have faith in your training and faith in the Pack.  Choose an experienced fighter for your first fight.  Accept that they WILL push you and hurt you, but they will (most likely ;) ) NOT break you.

Thanks Tobias,

I often don't give unsolicited advice, I usually just share my experience. As I don't know how the information will be perceived. I am glad that my comments were of value to you and others who might be intimidated from the upcoming event. You and people like you, who are involved in the Dog Brothers through the discussion page, seminars and Facebook will get to know and FULLY understand to transformation that happens to oneself and the connection and friendship that you develop through this "unique" fight experience. It is easy to get thrust into the excitement by watching the videos of the "smash and pound" that happens during the fight. It's what happens after that you carry with you... the respect for yourself and most importantly the friendship with the other fighter. I am glad that you will get to complete this relationship fully with the Dog Brothers. I don't believe that Crafty Dog knew exactly what was going to happen to people and how it would change them we He, Top, and Salty started this more then 20 years ago other than scare the neighbors  :-D. It is rather a unique platform for growth.

Woof!!

Great write-up C-Mighty Dog!  Thanks for putting it out there- this event is exactly what I have been looking for (it seems) so insight is not just greatly appreciated but INVALUABLE.

I should have done this years ago, especially after I saw the Nat Geo thing a few years ago.

As for the Chatter- Thanks for the input Point Dog.  I have experienced it in things from athletics to law enforcement but neither of those had me fidgeting 4 weeks from anything.  I view "chatter" as a good thing generally (at least based on my previous experiences).  It feels like my body just doing a systems check before I am about to be tested or enter a dangerous scenario.

cheers

I live here and if you have a rental car, and "decent" is to mean something semi pricey, try searching for hotels in Warner Center (a small city subsection about 10 miles away). The Marriott there is very nice, but pricey. If you want something right down the street, they have a Best Western not far away, but it is somewhat run down. I'd be glad to drive around and see what I see.

Sooooo....if YOU needed a full year before being ready for the Gathering, I might have to wait until I am hundred years old before I would be ready.

Guide Dog's REAL Advice (I had posted a sarcastic list of ideas in this thread as a goof) to New Fighters:

1. Send in your liability wavier.
2. (MOST IMPORTANT) Show up about an hour or so early to the Gathering. The showing up part is so very important. As a full DB with two little kids, last public Gathering we had a strep throat scare in my house, and last Tribal Gathering, my son brought home a nice stomach flu that got me, my daughter, and my wife. I've been out for a year, and am actually coming off Gathering withdrawal. When Guro Crafty uses that Woody Allen quote that 90% of life is showing up, it actually turns out to be true.
3. Do NOT do the solitary, sullen act. Most of the people I have met in DBMA, whether tribe member or not, have actually been really nice people. Most of the folks I have met at the Gatherings have had really great senses of humor, and that is very important. Don't take yourself, or fighting with sticks, too seriously. Do give it your all without reducing anyone's IQ, but try to have fun. Brand new fighters might not have ANY idea what I am writing about, but you will.
4. Take a knife fight and consider it your warm-up. When you finish and get back to the waiting area, do not dwell in any kind of result from that fight. If you "killed' you opponent in simulation, great. If you "died", whatev's. We all have holes in our games that we are always working on.
5. Take a single stick fight with either a fighter that has some experience, or a newbie who seems to be of a like mind. What I mean by that is an experienced fighter can work with you and whatever level is manifesting when you step out. By having a conversation with another newbie, you can gauge what sort of a mental state he/she is in. As long as you both share an understanding of what the fight should look like, I think you will be okay. I am not suggesting that you plan for a "pillow fight", but if your prospective opponent/partner is talking about the "nobility that comes with surviving a coma", you should politely suggest that your partner is at another level and would best be served by finding someone else. Experienced fighters should be able to say something to put you slightly at ease, and newbies of a like mind should be able to reflect your apprehension in a manner that allows you both to honor what you are feeling and get on with it. (Slight addendum for this point) - as far as sticks go, have your first fight with whatever is your MOST natural weapons configuration. Most prefer single stick, but if you are a siniwali fighter/stick and dagger fighter/staff fighter, go with whatever you are the most comfortable with. The rest of what I wrote still applies, regardless of with what weapon(s) configuration you choose to fight.
6. Unless you actually sustain an injury that ends the fight (and I believe most won't), when you get back to the fighters area, slow your breathing, and immediately take/set up another stick fight. Don't out think yourself here. You're in it. You just learned what it is. You will never be in a state of not knowing again. Go out and fight again.
7. I would suggest you take as many fights as you can, and that MOST people have one more in them when they believe they are done. Once you mentally make up your mind your day is over, take off your gear, and be present. Watch the rest of the day's fights.
8. Don't worry about ascension. If you are meant to be a DB, just show up and keep fighting. It will happen eventually.
9. Enjoy your first day of fighting. You never get another one.
10. Figure out how to take back what you have learned in the adrenal state to your regular classes/training group.

In my experience with the DB's, we really are friends at the end of the day. I look forward to meeting you and hearing about your day and your journey/ transformation.

I'm not letting you off that easy. The reason that I took a whole year was...well...I'm VERY analytical and somewhat a perfectionist, and!...the timing was such where,..that's when the next one came around. Unlike you, I had trained in other style of Kali before...I had picked up on many false perceptions of "the stick" and had to re-learn many things, which...at times, is much harder then to learn it fresh. I am still working towards understanding the stick and how it relates to the way "I" move. You picked up on it well and very fast! Work out some bugs and you're ready to go! After all, your opponents(female) are not the same is mine(also, not saying that they're not skilled) and the height differential will not be as extreme. You can do this!!!!!

See you there!

Looking to schedule about 3-4 fights:

1)  Doulbe stick vs Double stick *(hidden knives encourged),  no grapping rules, would enjoy keeping the fight on its feet.

2)  Single stick vs whateva (no rules)

3)  Kife fight - aluminum or shock knives.(no rules)

b4)  *** Maybe double stick  vs Staff

Well, just got home from a fun night working the Club and Im dozzzin offf while pushnig keys.

ZDC,

As this will be my first time at a gathering, I would be honored if you still have a knife fight opening.

The area right around the gym is not the best.  And I don't recommend getting a hotel near LAX as it's a 30 minute drive at best, but if you hit traffic you could easily spend a LONG time on the freeway when you're trying to be relaxed during your pre-fight prep.

Check out any location in Burbank.  In general, it's a nicer part of town, it's only 10 mins from the gym and it has lodging due to Burbank Airport.

Aloha, Poi

Would love to have a single stick fight If you'd welcome another "cherry fighter"

Yes Jamie, the after Gathering-Gathering is open to everybody and is a very important part of the bonding period in my oppinion. It allows you to "connect" in a different way with other fighters on a social level.

More then half of the fighters usually take off right after and miss this experience. Stick around, help clean up and we all coordinate where to go at that time. We also eat dinner there. I'll buy you a pint.

So I am from Clan Cherry!  Does it make me a dork that I was excited that my name was just added to the Fighter's List?  This is getting more real every day...

Not so grasshopper ;)

A friend and old member of the Dave 'Yoda' Greens CSA (Combative Stickfighting Alliance) Louie Pastore is heavily into historical scottish martial arts.  Louie isn't a battle recreationalist but someone who's after the martial side, he has fought with the UK Clans and we consider him a friend and good resource.  Louie has managed to have some traditional scottish stickfighting demonstrated at some of the Games here in Scotland.

FYI, historically a Scottish Laird may sponsor the training of young men/boys on his land.  The boys would not be allowed to train with swords until they had proven to be proficient with the short ash stick (with buckler), which would be used to train many of the sword fighting principles.  To keep things alive and competitive ;) at local games the boys could compete with the ash stick.  No protection (with the exception of the buckler) and no grappling (wrestling was included in the training, but not the Games except as a seperate sport sans weapons).  The winner would be the first 'to draw an inch of blood from above the eyeline', basically you had to crack the guy on the top of the head hard enough to draw blood.

Louie and his guys, whilst they take recreation seriously, still wear fencing masks

With regards to wrestling, there was Scottish back-lock wrestling who's primary position was a side on version of a seatbelt clinch, which trapped the right arm.  The idea being that during the time in history when Scots were banned from having swords by the English, the Scots trained to grapple an Englishman whilst he tried to draw his sword, pick him up and find a rock to throw him one  :-D

I haven't spoken to Louie for some time, but would love to do some demo fights at the Games!

Woof - Point Dog is correct. If you google "PurpleHeart Armoury" (or Armory) they offer traditional Scottish "single stick" with either boiled leather or wicker handguards and also historical instructional manuals.

Besides, isn't a caber a REALLY big stick?

Love to see the buzz building - this is going to be a great gathering. My regular training partner Clint is jumping in - his first Open Gathering but he's done 4 gatherings here in Texas and should do well.  Really looking forward to seeing him on this stage.

Also, I know its not really part of the fighting, but I'm lokoking forward to the display of mask art that really seems to be proliferating.  Toki's started a fun trend!

3 more weeks until the Gathering. 2 more weeks of training in the blistering heat with my NOHO brothers (today we almost passed out). 2 more weeks of running 100 yard dashes in the dark until your hamstrings can't take anymore and you want to spit blood. 2 more weeks of swinging a stick for an hour on each arm everyday. 3 more weeks..., I get to gather and see my brothers again. We will fight each other and some new fighters. Battle scars will be our trophies, and friendships will be our reward...not to mention a nice cold Beer!

My bud Carlos and I are looking to do a 2 on 2 knife fight. Any takers?

Mostly looking at single stick fights for myself, maybe a DBL stick - no rules (as i have seen posted before... assuming this means ground and hidden knife?)

Would like to get in as many fights as i can 3-5, is this realistic?

I am humbly open to a challenge/ ass kickin, you only live once! Just look for the dude in the  :-) mask

My brothers I have very sad news!!! Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the gathering.  My job is very demanding and I have been chosen to go on a special detail that will take three weeks.  I want to apologize to all and looking forward to the next Gathering.  Poi Dog and Dianhsuhe next time.  My heart is with you all and a big WOOF!!! God bless.
Title: Night Owl's idea
Post by: Crafty_Dog on September 03, 2011, 02:37:56 PM

Woof All:

Night Owl has commented to me that with the large number of fighters now at the Gatherings the day can get rather long and the audience really starts thinning out.  Given the increase of knife play during the stickfights (either hidden knives being brought into play, or full on stick & knife fights) his idea is that knife will not be lost, but that the tempo of things will be picked up.

Putting this up for discussion.

Just clarifying, the facebook post mentioned doing away with the knife fights altogether but the forum post here did not...?

"Night Owl has commented to me that with the large number of fighters now at the Gatherings the day can get rather long and the audience really starts thinning out that we should think about dropping the knife only fights altogether. Given the increase of knife play during the stickfights (either hidden knives being brought into play, or full on stick & knife fights) his idea is that knife will not be lost, but that the tempo of things will be picked up.

Putting this up for discussion."

Great day yesterday.  Thanks to everyone there, a heartfelt 'Woof' to those who should have been there but weren't because Life has a nasty habit of getting in the way.  Specific Mahalo to James, Tobias, Kaju, Doc Rick, and Darrien (sp?) for the fights yesterday, it is always an honor for me to cross sticks with such wonderful people.  Steve, you and I are on deck for 1st fight next time!

Big Aloha to the New Mexico clan, an absolute pleasure to meet you, hopefully I'll be back in the Land of Enchantment soon, and we can cross sticks/train then.  I know for a fact I'm missing some shouts to others, please forgive me, I've been hit in the head...a lot.

NoHo, y'all continue to inspire me.  Great fights from our (no-longer) cherry fighters and veteran fighters alike, I expected nothing less.  We represented Pappy's spirit well, methinks.

Life
Changing
Day

What an honor it was for me to step out with you folks at the Gathering.  Almost 20 years of reading about the Dog Brothers and their "events" just made my first Gathering all the more powerful and inspirational.  I was determined to meet as many of the warriors as I could and just soak it all in, and I believe I did!

The family atmosphere, the camaraderie, and the warrior spirit were EVERYWHERE yesterday.  After attending 1 gathering I cannot fathom ever missing one from now on.

After my first stick fight (Dog Cchi'med) where he destroyed me I walked off to the side and someone said "So how was it?" and I just said, "that was f'ing AWESOME, oww".  Then after the event some guy approached me to do an interview and as we were walking over to get that started I said did you pick me because all of the blood on my shirt or what? and he said nah you just have been making funny comments all day, so I said well what I lack in skill I make up for as a smart-ass and he just knodded.  That was great-

Time to go down to the garage on keep working on that sweep.

I spent quite a while in the ER last night and after CAT scans and Xrays it was determined my brain was fine (well no worse than it was when I stepped on the mat) but my TMJ was broken and I needed half a dozen stitches inside my ear. I need to see an oral surgen to get my jaw wired when I get back to Boston. It was disapointing, but hey if I was afraid to get hurt I would play checkers!

I had a great day, huge thanks to all my bros who fought and of.course yourself and Pretty Kitty. Can't wait fpr next year (or maybe the tribal?) I probably won't be able to fight at Beat the Crap Out of Cancer, but I will be attending the one in Toronto.

I was glad to see my Boy Ryan made C-, he deserved it.

Again, my thanks!

Matt Berry

PS: I am home safe now. I saw a doc when I got back and I am going to the specialist tomorrow.
Thanks again for the great time and I look forward to continuing being a part of this great organization.

Guro,

Thank you for establishing an environment where we can come and test our skills. This was my first Gathering and have to say that it definitely was transformational. The energy from everyone was amazing. My cousin that was in the audience put it best, "Everyone has two personalities. The one they fight with, and the friendly one before and after the fight."

It was awesome to experiment with the two on two knife fight. I just remember time went so fast. On my other fights, I remember time would either speed up, or slow down at certain moments. I was certainly living the moment.

But their is a "feeling" that goes further than just that day. I personally feel in touch with "something". A keen awareness with the "moment". And as I write this, I remember and can identify the "feeling", the "something", the "moment"...It is "Higher Consciousness"....

Thank you Guro.
