Opening the thread of record for the Open Gathering.  Once again, it will be held at Gokor's place.

This may be a dumb question, but do you know when you will have the registration form available? Or is it already up and I'm just looking in the wrong place?

Yeah, I kind of figured it was too early for it to be up. I'm just excited about it because I've been training with the various DBMA videos, as well as some others in various arts as much and as hard as I can for a while now and really want to get out there and do this for real. I've even been able to find a couple of guys that have been willing to train with me and do some sparring, though just with padded sticks so that kind of stinks. And even though I realize it's a very real possibility (read probability) that I'll get rolled pretty good, I'm strangely OK with that as long as I'm able to learn something from the experience. Either way though I'm going to be there this year. I don't care if I have to walk my happy butt to get there. Looking forward to meeting as many of you guys as I can in person.

Woof JSWorth - I recognize that excitement and burning enthusiasm  :-D - I know the feeling. All of us who have done a gathering have felt that. Keep that going strong and keep training and if you are there in September, I'd be happy to save a dance for you. I think it helps to have at least a match or two prearranged - helps with motivation in training and keeping it focused.

Woof all! I'm in the process of planning a trip to LA this summer for our first open gathering. The problem I'm having is that I have never really left Memphis, and I don't have any idea what I'm getting into. If anyone in the area could help me out with information about the area and hotels, that would be great.  :-D

Just want to make sure you folks got my "fighter form" for the open Gathering in Sept. Also, its kind of early, but what the hell, got 2 fights set up for the open (thanks Toki and Eric Taimanglo) and looking for 1 more (preferably single stick but will consider another knife fight).

Woof out,
Dirk

JSWorth- I look forward to meeting you, the enthusiasm and upcoming chatter is something I SERIOUSLY felt last year (my 1st Gathering), apparently it is normal.  I was determined to get there no matter what also, I hung a copy of my registration form next to my medicine cabinet where I would be reminded and motivated every day.

I got, as you would say, "rolled" last year, broken finger, broken nose (again) and major bruising ALL OVER, and it was one of the greatest days of my entire life!  The pack mentality, respect, and comraderie is soo strong I could hardly believe it, even between newbies and the Dog's- afterwards we went to a restaurant and had a great time talking about how we got jacked up, or if you are Eric Tailmango, he jacked folks up! LOL.  But did not boast about it.  We were fortunate to have Guro Crafty Dog break bread with us and I was stoked, he has been one of my MA idols for almost 20 years.

I recommend setting up a couple fights in advance as Dog Rick said, it takes away a little of the stress so you are not wandering around the mat asking folks to dance.  LOL

Poi-Dog is one of the nicest folks you will find and he often saves a dance or two for newbies, he is soo good he will push you to the limit but not break you (many Dog's fit this description) - Fighting with the Dog's seems a little safer because they are used to the adrenalin rush and they do not typically lose control.

I am looking to set up a dance or two on here, and really hope I can step out with some of the best and toughest out there- my goal is to make "Dog" so I want to test myself as much as possible. (Maybe this is just a death-wish, but at least if I got to fight Kaju-Dog, he can give me medical treatment after he jacks me up)

A-Pos
Note to self: Wait until NEXT year to fight C-Mongolian Dog again.  I am still sore from last time! LOL
Note to self II:  During ground and pound do not remove your mask "to see better" as you will get jacked and bloody.

One should note that this is a Real Contact Stick Fighting event, no empty hand fighting permitted (unless you loose your weapon of course) :-D

@ Saint Miki, don't worry about not having a challenging fight with the ladies. Between the 4 women who have already fought in at least 1 Gathering previously, I believe they are training very hard for this up-coming fight day since they've been through it before. One is trained by me, one trained by Salty Dog, and the other trained by Crafty on occassion. So no worries...

Still looking for a single stick dance..

Imagine a place where you're in line to get a hot dog at Pinks, and they rip your motorcycle helmet off by cutting the straps. High desert, you can basically drive from north L.A. all the way to the Mexican border without ever leaving a city. It's a giant, sprawling mass of crime and Liberals. Bad conservatives are sent here as a form of purgatory. That basically sums it up.

Seriously speaking, if you want fabulous food, a diversity of culture, fabulous weather, you can ski today and go to the beach all in the same day; if you want entrepreneurs all around you,
if you want excitement and opportunity, an international flavor, come to LA.  If you are a redneck, hate other cultures and minorities, if you don't like the sun, beaches, or ski resorts, if you are narrow in your thinking, don't come here.  It's all here; it's up to you.  Whatever you make of it.  And oh yeah, we have evil and deception too.   :-)  And you can still vote Republican; but you will be in the minority.   :-)

When I first arrived in LA in 1982 I had several near misses on rear ended the car in front of me with my Harley.  I could not understand why cars were stopping for no apparent reason.  Then someone explained to me that in LA you have to stop for pedestrians.

mostly i'm just looking to find out which areas are the "bad neighborhoods," i'm still in the process of trying to book the hotel and whatnot. :3 We're planning on a five day trip, so i have to know what public transit is like. having only been on a trip outside of memphis once, i'm trying to cover all of my bases.
Title: Re: 9/23/12 Dog Brothers Open Gathering of the Pack
Post by: Hello Kitty on April 20, 2012, 07:33:38 AM
Hard to say due to the fact that L.A. is like a big checkerboard with good and bad neighborhoods everywhere. East L.A. and central and south central L.A. are definitely not good. Hollenbeck division is amongst the worst as are Pacoima, Sylmar, and Van Nuys in the Valley. A better way to go is just to maintain situational awareness, because odds are, nothing will happen where you're at, but you never know. Just enjoy yourself. L.A. has many very cool things about it. Anyone from NoHo can offer suggestions as can Huntington Beach and Crafty. Enjoy.

as the dates get closer, you will find that most travellers stay around the same area, there will be rental cars for carpooling( granted, they are not your chauffer) but most fighters are very helpful and friendly. You should have any difficulty getting around.  Look for other travellers and ask where they are staying. I belive that even though the Gathering is in North Hollywood, people still stay near Hermosa Beach or the LAX airport.

Sensei Toki (C-Mighty Dog) hit it on the head.  Most fighters are more than happy to help IN ANY WAY.  I live in San Diego and my fiance and I go up the night before and stay at a pretty inexpensive hotel about 10-15 minutes from Gokor's gym- Would be happy to pick you up, shuttle you around and anything else you might need!  This offer is for any fighters coming to town.

Email or PM me if anybody needs anything-

This statement was in regards to whether someone would be interested in an empty hand fight.

I'm confused about the statement I quoted as I'm also interested in empty hand fights at Dog Brothers events. Why would empty hand fighting not be permitted? If knives, belts, bokken, garden hoses, etc... are viable options at a "Real Contact Stick Fighting event" then surely empty hand should be.

I've also seen video clips of people fighting empty hand vs one stick. I may have missed the memo but this is leaving me pretty confused.

Anyone else have an opinion on this?

I'm also unclear as to who has the authority to "permit" something at a gathering, from my understanding you could fight anyone, with anything you wanted, as long as they agreed to it. Are there certain people, such as C-Mighty Dog that decide things like this for everyone else?

Please enlighten me.

CC:

C-MD is simply repeating the established understanding.   As I have explained on various occasions, there are plenty of venues one can go for MMA type fights; if that's what you want to do then do that.  However, at a DB Gathering fighters happen to become unarmed, then the fight continues anyway.

Does this help?

Thanks for the response.

I wasn't aware of this established understanding until now, and unfortunately didn't catch one of your explanations earlier.

As it turns out I train in a predominately MMA focused gym and therefore have the opportunity to practice empty hand figting there. The reason why I was interested in pursuing this at a Gathering was to further explore empty hand fighting under a less restrictive rule set. My experience with fighting at Dog Brothers events has been vastly different than fighting within the club I train at. I was interested in how my empty hand fighting my differ in this different venue but will of course abide by the established understanding in the future.

How does everyone prepare for the gathering? Personally, I've been working more cardio and strength than usual, and trying to put an edge on my ground work... though in reality, that's all coming with taking my normal training to the next level. Do you more seasoned fellas have a specific ritual in the month or two leading up to a gathering?

my name is darrin coe and I've been training in arnis for 15 years or so.  I'm strongly considering coming to the gathering this year.  At least I've started more intense training just in case.  anyway, just wanted to say that it will be an honor and a privilege to face off with anyone at the gathering.  I consider every opponent I face as my teacher, so the more teachers the better :)

Ok, so I hope to see y'all there.

Saint Miki- I follow the rare and arduous routine of drinking, smoking, and watching Rockford files in the months leading up to AND following the Gathering.  I have a huge stack of motorcycle tires in the garage that I beat the hell out of once in awhile though...

Folks will think I am kidding but...

Darring Coe- Welcome to the adventure!  Last year was my 1st Gathering, it was one of the greatest days of my entire life and I do NOT have 15 years of Arnis training  :-o

The intensity, comraderie, and growth from the Gathering was beyond my wildest expectations.  I am not sure what might be keeping you from attending, but I can almost guarantee that you will learn more about yourself than you expected.  Besides after 15 yrs of Arnis, aren't you curious to put it to work?

Hope to see you out there!

gibby,

generally, what's holding me back is having a mortgage, a wife, and four kids.  it's tough to justify a plane ticket and a hotel, but I'm working on it.

I have actually had six in ring reality dog brothers style stickfights but the gathering is the mecca and i'll  get there eventually.  These fights were in the early 2000s and were part of nhb/mma cards.  we did three 2 minute rds.  some of the fights were underground out in the middle of field and these were truly anything goes.  broke a thumb, almost lost my left eye, it was more fun than a guy should have with a pair of sticks.  at the moment, I've got eric taimanglo in colorado springs who is gracious to give me a beating whenever I ask for it.  Yeah, I love the stickfighting.  I like to refer to it as play time for grown ups.

I'm doing a lot of cardio, partner work, and weighted training.  every other day I'm trying to do all of my basics with either dumb bells or aerobic exercise bars (weighted at 6 lbs a piece).  I try to be real creative in ways to integrate footwork with striking.  For instance, using weighted sticks strike and bounce a swiss fit ball and chase it around for 2 minute rounds.  very good cardio/footwork drill.  On my off days I'm trying to do just cardio using my regular fight sticks.  now if I could just quit eating ice cream, chips, and cookies . .... .

Roger that Darrin, I hear ya on the $$.  Taimanglo is a beast-- next time you fight him just tell him to quit "checking-in" on FB when he is at the gym, it is depressing...LOL

The NHB stuff is awesome, I would do it in a second- when I was younger, fighting in TJ (Tijuana) for a few bucks was the thing...

one of the reasons I want to go to the gathering is to try various types of footwork structures against different opponents.  arnis de mano baston galang miyahara has a rather unique footwork structure and I want to test it against a variety of opponents.  Galang Miyahara also operates best at outer ranges of combat (weapons, largo, and some medio) and I want to see how it adapts to other distance structures.  Anyway, comments on footwork and distancing are always given lots of thought.

Very cool Darrin...My goal is/was to test my training in the most "alive" situation that I could find...I have also just idolized Crafty and the others since I was like 19.  My system (Kara-Ho Kempo) teaches many weapons but not the stick(s), we do teach "club defenses" to defend against a stick armed attacker but they seem ineffective for me at least, having faced skilled arnis/escrima folks.  My focus is going to be effective low-line kicks and my iron broom sweep :)

Good luck with keeping distance at the Gathering, nearly every fight seems to go to the clinch and/or ground.

You have identified here something that in my opinion is very important-- the skill of maintaining striking range.

In DBMA we call this ST. FOOM which is an acronym for Stay The Fornicate Off Of Me.

You have identified here something that in my opinion is very important-- the skill of maintaining striking range.

In DBMA we call this ST. FOOM which is an acronym for Stay The Fornicate Off Of Me.

crafty, that is awesome.  my training partner and I were working this just last night.  Have been spending a lot of time examining and studying gathering videos, then we work the footwork: solo baston, doble baston, knife, stick and knife.  One of the things I expect to learn/work at the gathering is to get my opponent to get into my striking range without striking me.  There's wonderfully fun psychology around all of this and you don't really "get it" until you've played "live".  Last night I didn't play so good at a couple of points as indicated by the bruise developing on my left ear.  Anyway, I'm continuing to try to make "it a go" as far as getting to the gathering.

Though it is not shown in exactly that context, there is some subtle and advanced footwork shown in our DVD "The Bolo Game" that may be of use to you in playing a ST FOOM game.

I'm wondering, is anyone planning on going out there from the Hemet area that might be interested in carpooling? As much as I want to I'm not going to be able to fight this year, got home from the in-laws to find my place had been robbed, but would love to at least be able to watch a few fights.

BTW what kind of crack head steals a fencing mask, some gloves, and a bunch of sticks?

No joke. They didn't even take my DBMA DVDs to go with it. At least if they had done that it would make sense.

We're starting to get some inquiries about accomodations near the location (Gokor's place once again).

Would folks familiar with the area start to chime in please?

Also, remember you use the search function to find the thread for last year's Gathering too.

We're only three weeks from the Euro Gg, whereas we are nearly ten weeks from the Open Gathering.

Last year we had sixty two fighters.

BTW, there is NO submission of fighter registrations at the door!!! We have too busy a day to be dealing with that.

I'm still working on getting to the gathering.  not going to register until I know that I can be there for sure.  Still training as if I'll be there.  To participate in a gathering will allow me to cross off one of the items on my martial arts bucket list.  If I can make it I'll be interested in single stick, double stick, and stick/knife.  I'm looking to fight as often as possible and not die or be disabled (mentally or physically).  btw, what time do festivities start and about when do they wrap up?

Woof All:

I would like to put out there the fact that Pretty Kitty and I were rather irked at last year's Open Gathering by the number of people who were trying to sneak video of the fights.

In the old days cameras and video cameras were readily distinguishable.  Now they are not.  We always were fine with people taking fotos, but now we find we must give serious consideration to a no private camera policy, perhaps with a pro photographer there taking pictures for sale later.

Just got done reading the newsletter and saw this post. Maybe only fighters can take pictures? I'm sure that someone standing in line that has 10 fights before him wouldn't mind taking a few pics for the people fighting? Just a thought. Also, what will be the policy on shoes? I know last year everyone was made to go barefoot because of marking the mats. I wear wrestling shoes, I know wrestling shoes don't mark the mats. I did however see some people wearing chuck taylors.

I think it is a shame that people are trying to sneak in cameras and tape the fights  :x

@C-Yo Dog: How do you want to judge if a new Fighter is taking pictures or filming? On the day of the Gathering Guro Crafty and Pretty Kitty have so much stuff to do, how should they than also check the audience/fighters?
A professional photographer is a really good solution. For a couple of bucks everybody can purchase a DVD with all the pictures.

@Gong Fu Dog, good point. I was thinking it would really limit who had the cameras if ONLY the fighters on the mat were allowed cameras out. But like you said, you couldn't tell if they're filming or taking pics. Day of fights I know NO fighter will wanna have to be thinking of policing, their mind will be on fighting. I think being able to buy a dvd with pics is a great idea.

If not a pro photographer then maybe any tribe members who will be there, who aren't fighting could be on the mat and if you want pics of your fight, you give your camera to them? If you don't like the quality of their picture taking skills then you can just get in line and talk about it. :)

I like the idea of a pro photographer... great pics. I like C Yo Dog´s idea too of having other fighters take photos. I don´t think the audience always gets why the rules are what they are.

Having said that, I almost certainly won´t be making this Open due to work. I wish it weren´t so, but it is what it is. I hope to have some time off in a year. We´ll see.

Best of luck to everyone.

Howdy sports fans-

I'm curious for some 'authoritative' feedback on glove wear; I took a shot to the hand wearing the KIL gloves (with a padded stick) on Sunday and earned a major spiral fracture to the 3rd metacarpal - surgery scheduled for tomorrow to get a full recovery in time for the Gathering.

I'd rather not go through this again if possible, so I will be working on keeping my hands closer to the body - but I'm also wondering if I can get guidance on some acceptable lacrosse gloves before shelling out a ton of cash, only to find they can't be used in the Gathering.  I earn my living through my fingers, so I'd really like to take acceptable precaution to prevent similar damage...any links or model name/number would be appreciated.

Cheers,
dax

Is than an issue, that there are certain kinds of padding or protective gear that isn't allowed at the gathering? I have a pair of STX lacrosse gloves that absolutely do the job of protecting my hands without taking the sting away from a well-placed shot.

Also, I think the idea of having a professional photographer on hand and selling discs with the photos afterward is a great idea. In truth, my experiences with giving cameras to fellow fighters only turns out blurry and poor quality shots, and I would really appreciate the opportunity to bring something like that home after the Gathering! :3

My son played lacrosse for a couple of years so I have a sense of what they are like.   My sense is that for sparring many models are wonderful but for a Gathering there are many versions which are a bit too protective for a Gathering but there are some which would be OK.  Until I see the gloves I cannot give a definitive answer.

Being a noob myself I will be bringing several pairs of gloves just in case. I have a pair of mylex elite street hockey and stx rival lacrosse gloves that I am hoping will fit the bill (the stx ones are the closest to kil I could find).
I do like the idea of a professional photographer on site, if he has a website (or use DBMA site?) he could give out numbers to the fighters and post the pics online for purchase.

Still looking for some single stick dances if anyone is interested.

I see no one has really commented on the question of accommodations near the Gathering site.

IMHO, the city of Burbank would be the place to stay.  Has its own airport with car rentals, decent hotels and motels, its own police force, a mid/upper-mid income population and is only 10 mins from Gokor's.

Van Nuys, where Gokor's is, would NOT be the place to stay.

If anyone needs more specific help with accommodations, PU from the airport (do Burbank, NOT LAX!), or general info, let me know and I'll help you out.

Woof All:

On the DBMA Assn forum there has been some discussion about stick length at the Ggs.   Someone raised the question of KK sticks being substantially longer (somewhere in the 36-39" range) than the usual FMA stick (30" being a typical length at Ggs) and proffered the notion of "cumulative length" i.e. that a 5-6' staff was the functional equivalent of two 36" KK sticks.

Thoughts?

Never cared for" Dueling"  with matching weapons.   Can't we stick closer to the era of "GLADIATORS"  and embrace the challenges of variables such as this?

Sticks should vary as much as we do as humans.

Whilst I shan't be there, I'm of the opinion that weapon size is down to the two fighters (perhaps with an elder casting an eye). Unmatch weapons lead to interesting fights ;)

It's about as unfair as any other mixed weapon fight  :?

I've never heard anyone complain about a mixed weapon fight, be it stick v staff/3-section/nunchaka/etc. I've always been of the opinion that if you were willing to agree to it (and there was no underhand trickery) then there's nothing to complain about if you get whacked.

Start Hydrating now if you wait till the day of, it's too late.  Look for clear urine output.   Avoid taking supplements that can dehydrate your body.  Also avoid taking Ibuprofen/ Motrin and other things that thin the blood, making hemorrhage control more difficult and internal bleeding more serious.   Just some kibble

With consideration for the registered fighters list,  there's an eery. Lack of" Chatter" ...  Everyone has balls of steele. I suppose  8-)

Don't make me send mine in.... lol

We are well over 60 fighters; barring a last minute epidemic of vaginitis, this will be the biggest Open Gathering ever.

Brain Fart ;)

69 fighters is outstanding.   My hope is that at least some will buy Dog Brothers Individual 1st Aid kits.  It has all the contents one would desire for self help if injured.   My supplies are limited but available as needed.  It's highly encouraged that you hit up the DB Online shop.

PS

I will be happy to answer any questions and show anyone who buys a DB med kit how it all works... :)

It makes me feel useful and just spending time surrounded by like minded Warriors is just natural.

Awesome day yesterday!!! Great fights and lots of respect and friendship.  Wish I could have fought more  :-( still walking limp due to my pain on the lower back all the way down to my left foot caused by a good hit.  There's alwyas next year... Thank you my Brother Kaju Dog for fixing me up LOL.. Thank You C-Might Dog for getting me up from the mat while i was down in pain.  Got some little bruises too but can be fixed  :-D.  In all it was a great time.  Thanks to my new brother jason Laird for a great knife and stick fight, looking forward to go at it with you next year.  Gibby, my apologies, but next time we're on brother.  Dog Brothers!!! Yeah!!! God bless all.  :-D

Jesus:  Releasing the psoas, quads, and calves often does wondrous things for back pain, regardless of the apparent cause.  I can't say why, but I can say in my experience that is the way it is.   Not to say that qualified help is or is not required, just saying releasing those things usually seems to help a lot.

All:

As always the next day is a swirl of images in my head.  One of the many moments that caught my attention was the IFWA (in fight weapon access) not once but twice by Eric T. of his drone trainer.  To be able to open a knife under pressure of an attack is a hugely overlooked skill, and to be able to do it with stickfighting gloves on, even ones as thin as Eric's, is really quite a trick.

I agree that there wasn't a lot of chatter which surprised me.  I studiously avoided it this year to keep my anxiety level down.  Maybe others did the same.  Plus, after fretting about it for nearly a year, by the time chattering season started, I was so tired of thinking about the Gathering.

WOOF ALL!!!

WHAT A GATHERING!!!!!  Thanks to GC, staff, fighters and spectators for making it such a great event.  It was great to see everyone and meet new friends.  I arrived late due to the fact that I missed my flight, but everyone was very welcoming upon my arrival and I was able to jump right in.  Thanks to Nick (Pappy Dog) and Toki (C-Mighty Dog) for the fights.  The two of you are awesome fighters and it was an honor to fight both of you.  As always, I learn from each fight and always want to continue an grow. I couldn't make the after party..haha. Didn't want to miss my flight again!  Lastly, there were a lot of great fights witnessed yesterday.  I was able to gained even more knowledge as a spectator when I wasn't preparing to fight.  Also, thanks to Kaju Dog for the medical support. Without that, our warriors would be out of the fight.  Kaju Dog was able to patch guys up and send them back out.  Now, those are WARRIORS!

WOOF!!!

Woof All:

Even though I am no longer an active fighter, a Gathering still puts me in the altered space in the following days.  It is a space and a vibration I hold onto as best as I can for as long as I can.

Today I went for my conditioning routine at Bluff Cove.  It is a wondrous spot; our Creator was in a good mood when he made it.   Today the waves were good (one of the surfers explained to me that there is only about a 10 degree angle at which the swell works for this cove due to Catalina Island and the Palos Verdes peninsula itself) and the surfers were many.  Though the temperature was in the upper 70s and nary a cloud was in the sky, in a subtle way there was a hint of autumn in the air.

With images of the floating through my head, the four round trips down and up passed by effortlessly.  When I was done I sat for a time looking out over the kelp beds and out into the vastness of the ocean and went silent.

The Adventure continues!

Check out the pictures on Facebook! Awesome

But now that the Open is over and we are taking stock and setting goals, I thought this is important enough to post here as a postlude. The finish of one Gathering marks the start of preparation for the next, so......
The Tribal is indescribable.....so different than the Open. It is truly not to be missed. I can not put it into words, but EVERY fighter who is not a tribe member should be aspiring and every one who is a tribe member and has gone....let me put it this way.  I don't get chatter before the Open anymore. I ALREADY have chatter for the Tribal Challenging C-Yo Dog and Mongolian Dog probably have something to do with that, but that's the kind of people you fight EVERY FIGHT. There are NO junk fights. Plus, it counts as 2 gatherings toward advancement (each day is separate). Mark your calendars now and start planning for May because the Tribal is the NUTS!
Hope to see you there! MAke it a priority and TRAIN!
Woof!
