------------------------------------------------------------

A Howl of Greeting to All:

The main theme of this camp will be ?Short impact weapons against the Big Bully?.

Examples of ?short impact weapons?: short sticks, small tire irons, ASPs, flashlights, rolled up magazines, large and small screwdrivers, closed folder knives, palm sticks/kubotans, silverware, pens, and the like-- items that give you answer to that perennial and annoying ;-) question "What do you do if you don't have your stick with you?"

The structure taught is highly applicable to the gun retention issues of LEOs. As always, our LEO and Military! discount applies.

At first glance, the idea of looking at SIWs from the point of view of the SIW man may seem odd? typically we look to solve the issue from the perspective of the less armed/unarmed man. Yet as we have seen repeatedly in ?Dog Brothers Gatherings of the Pack? it is VERY common, indeed probable, that when one man loses his stick, he succeeds in closing to clinch ad smothering the other man's stick.

When we look at things from our DBMA ?Walk as a Warrior for all your Days? Practitioner?s perspective, certain things become apparent:

1) Typically the ?problem? is younger, bigger, stronger, and meaner than we are-- the Big Bully. The less we have studied and trained for it, the more getting bum rushed and our SIW getting smothered is a very real possibility.

2) Because we avoid fights, if we are in one it is because it is being imposed upon us?and so "cheating" is entirely appropriate.

3) As a practical matter, it can be difficult to have large sticks, clubs, etc with you all the time, but it can be easy to carry various SIWs. Furthermore, the environment often offers various SIWs-- but you won't recognize them if you don't know how to use them.

4) Most SIWs do not trigger legal issues.

5) DAs and juries can be very unsympathetic to the use of guns and/or knives, even when they are legal.

I confess to being pretty tickled with myself with this block of material. We should have a real good time.

Guro Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny

woof all:

been busy with real life, happened to have some time today and surf on by to one of my fave sites on the net.

lo and behold, i see something i'm interesting in and being in the Family Man stage of life, i cannot devote time and money for the travel to this camp :-(

so my next option is to post a q on this thread and ask any chance of a video? :-)

edit:  living in nyc, i love the idea of the SIW, i carry several pens on me and it's great from many viewpts (what if you lose your pen? no sweat.; officer i was frantic and i had my hands in my pocket and grabbed a pen, it's a pen, not a knife, not a gun; ...)

Woof All:

David:

10:00-12:130 Morning Session
12:30-14:00 Lunch  (a leisurely lunch spent in good friendship is a good thing! Also, the 12:30 starting time for lunch helps us avoid the noon lunchtime rushhour.
14:00-16:30 Afternoon Session.

In short, a 5 hours training broken up by a leisurely lunch.

SG:

Family man and finances?  I hear ya!  I went fot he big bucks in stickfighting!

As a born and raised New Yorker, much of my sense of "Walking as a Warrior" descends from various adventures growing up in NYC so it sounds like we are on the same page!  Anyway, the SIW material will first be for the members of the DBMAA (Dog Brothers Martial Arts Ass'n) but yes there will be a DVD/video after we are done with current projects (Kali Tudo Volume One)-- which will be finished in a matter of days-- Staff, Big Stick Los Triques; Double Stick Los Triques; Snaggletooth; Cycle Drills)

Hope to see more of you around here.

Woof,
Crafty Dog

The camp was great.  Lots of good info and hanging out.

The basic "St. Foom" tactics and footwork can apply to empty hands or stick.  On top of the prescribed info there was a lot of rabbit trails and I came away with some good ideas to work on.  Also some of my training partners had some sweet moves I am stealing for my own.

This was my first opportunity to train directly with Crafty.  The energy he brings and his ability to flow from plan "A" to plan "B" to plan "C" was quite an experience in itself.

Now while I had the pleasure of being one of Corey's training partners this weekend, I know for sure he wasn't talking about any "sweet moves" learned from me.   (I on the other hand learned a lot from Dog Corey, though some of that learning was more sweat than sweet )

As an outsider to DBMA and a middle-aged desk jockey (an FMA "practitioner" as opposed to "fighter" in DBMA lingo)  I just wanted to chime in and say what an excellent two days of training Crafty put on.   He assembled a great group of students, kept the information flowing, and provided real-world applications for the techinques being taught.  All-in-all a terrific  and fun experience, and one I would heartily recommend to any one who trains in combative arts.

Best regards,

Argyll
Title: Fun at camp
Post by: vigil on May 17, 2005, 11:29:09 AM
I'll third Dog Corey's sentiments since Argyll beat me to seconding them. :)

What a fun weekend. Met a bunch of great people and got to learn a bunch of great new stuff.

As a current FMA/DBMA practitioner, and soon to be fighter when I can get out to a gathering for some fun, I definetly agree Argyll. A weekend that fun should be illegal (i think it is in some states... ;-) ). Guro Crafty you certainly do bring a great energy and vibe to the training. It really makes the material more fun to learn than it already is on it's own. Makes for a great weekend and atmosphere.

So hard to figure out what I'll remember most. Was it learning STFOM? Learning to "send the last few inches home" or how to make Kalani let loose a little (those who were there know what I mean!!  :P ). Though standing at the desk at the R1 gym and signing a release only to realize it's Frank Trigg standing there was fun to.

Looking forward to the next camp and to see everyone again at a gathering.

Woof All:

Thanks for all the kind words-- they put a wag in my tail.

I love what I do and weekends like this are my idea of a really good time.

Welcome to the DBMAA "isthereadog?".  We'll be seeing you over at the Members's site I trust , , ,

Thanks Dog Corey for the kettlebells and the "Thor's hammer".  Although i haven't tried the TH yet, I have begun exploring the KB.  Indeed I used one as a means of warming up for sparring yesterday at RAW-- very quick and efficient!

Argyll, a pleasure meeting you and thank you for the legal pieces-- very useful to me.

Vigil-- I know what you mean by looking around the gym and realizing that the place is full of people you have seen fight.  BTW, Vladamir Matyushenko (along with Coach Rico) are in Brazil at the moment for his fight this weekend.  Frank has been very helpful to me-- indeed his unmatched lead striking game is, with his blessing, something we draw upon in our to-be-finished-tomorrow-with-any-luck "Kali Tudo" (tm) double disc DVD  :D   We call the two techniques shown "Triggonometry 101 and 102"

The Adventure continues!
