Title: Fire Hydrant: Howls from Crafty Dog, Rules of the Road, etc
Post by: Crafty_Dog on July 17, 2006, 02:07:15 PM
Woof All:

It feels like a good moment to address a couple of matters.

Almost everyone seems to have a good feel for the basic Dog Brothers rule "Be Friends at the end of the day".  In cyberspace, we speak to each other as if we were face to face.

I also would like to point out an important feature of the culture of this forum: thread coherency.  By this I mean a strong bias towards having threads which address particular themes instead of a zillion threads all over the place.  Not only does this make for more coherent conversation, it also makes for easier use by those who come here to read about particular topics without having to surf all over the place.  For example, as I write, we are on the cusp of 40,000 reads for the WW3 thread.  The number of reads per post on this thread is quite impressive and it says to me that our principle of thread coherency has merit.  Thread coherency also makes it easier for each of these threads to be research and data repositiories i.e. if someone wants to find a post of something that caught his attention he can go to a particular thread and find it much more readily.

Bottom line:  Before creating a new thread, please take the time to surf through existing pages to see if there is one that already encompasses the subject matter of your intended post.

This is PARTICULARLY so with regard to political matters.  In a certain sense we can say that martial arts is about more than developing our personal fighting skills, it is about the Art and Science of dealing with Aggression effectively.  Seen this way, it makes perfect sense to have threads about evolutionary psychology and about governmental actions.  Indeed, government action is the sanctioned force of its respective society.  This is, by the way, why progress usually consists of lessening those areas of Life determined by governmental action and increasing those handled by voluntary personal interaction!

We live in interesting times and the transient nature of the many moments in the larger themes could easily lead to a situation where political posts crowd out martial arts posts and this I do not want.  This is, and will remain to be, a martial arts forum.

This matter of thread coherency has a far looser standard for martial arts related posts.  In other words, if your intended post might fit in a themed thread and you can find that thread then please post it there.  If not, go right ahead and create a new one.

In the coming days, I will be moving some posts around, perhaps creating a new thread or two.

The Adventure continues,
Crafty Dog

Title: Dealing w/ Impotent Internet Cranks
Post by: buzwardo on August 02, 2006, 10:58:43 AM
Hope I'm not tresspassing by posting in this thread, but many of the issues cited here have been lurking around this forum lately, IMO. I've some quibbles with this piece; I think a more clinical term should be used than bullying and some of the responses suggested are simplistic, but overall  good info can be gleaned. Click the link as the original is well annotated:

http://www.bullyonline.org/related/cyber.htm

Cyberbullying on the Internet
Cyber bullies, cyber bullying, flame mail, hate mail

The Internet provides the perfect forum for cyberbullies, individuals whose aim is to gain gratification from the distress caused by provoking and tormenting others. The anonymity, ease of provocation, and almost infinite source of targets means the Internet is full of predators from pedophiles targeting children to serial bullies targeting ... anybody.

Cyberbullies get a perverse sense of satisfaction (called gratification) from sending people flame mail and hate mail. Flame mail is an email whose contents are designed to inflame and enrage. Hate mail is hatred (including prejudice, racism, sexism etc) in an email.

Serial bullies, whose behaviour profile you'll find in full at Bully OnLine, harbour a lot of internal aggression which they direct at others. This may include projection, false criticism and patronising sarcasm whilst contributing nothing of any value. It may also include a common tactic of "a number of people have emailed me backchannel to agree with me". This is standard bully-speak which I've experienced on several forums. In every case it's a fabrication or a distortion - usually the former. It's also a variant of the serial bully head teacher who says "a number of parents have complained to me about you...". When challenged, the identity of the alleged complainants can't be disclosed because it's "confidential". The purpose of this tactic is to wind people up. Don't be fooled into believing it has any validity - it doesn't.

People who bully are adept at creating conflict between those who would otherwise pool negative information about them. The method of creating conflict is provocation which bullies delight in because they know they can always coerce at least one person to respond in a manner which can then be distorted and used to further flame and inflame people. And so it goes on. The bully then sits back and gains gratification from seeing others engage in destructive behaviour towards each other.

Many serial bullies are also serial attention-seekers. More than anything else they want attention. It doesn't matter what type of attention they get, positive or negative, as long as they can provoke someone into paying them attention. It's like a 2-year-old child throwing a tantrum to get attention from a parent. The best way to treat bullies is to refuse to respond and to refuse to engage them - which they really hate. In other words, do not reply to their postings, and on forums carry on posting without reference to their postings as if they didn't exist. In other words, treat nobodies as nobodies.

The anger of a serial bully is especially apparent when they come across someone who can see through them to espy the weak, inadequate, immature, dysfunctional aggressive individual behind the mask. For instance, when serial bullies see themselves described at www.bullyonline.org/workbully/serial.htm they usually send me an abusive email.

If you receive abusive emails or flame mails or hate mail, you can forward it to abuse@isp where "isp" is the service provider the abuser is using, eg "aol.com" or "yahoo.com". Although Internet service providers may not act on every complaint, the more complaints they receive about a particular individual (with examples of abusive email) the more likely they are to close down the person's account.

The objectives of bullies are Power, Control, Domination, Subjugation. They get a kick out of seeing you react. It doesn't matter how you react, the fact they've successful provoked a reaction is, to the bully, a sign that their attempt at control have been successful. After that, it's a question of wearing you down. The more your try to explain, negotiate, conciliate, etc the more gratification they obtain from your increasingly desperate attempts to communicate with them. Understand that it is not possible to communicate in a mature adult manner with a disordered individual who's emotionally retarded.

The Number One rule for dealing with this type of behaviour is: don't respond, don't interact and don't engage. This is not as easy to do as it sounds. It's a natural response to want to defend yourself, and to put the person right. However, never argue with a serial bully; it's not a mature adult discussion, but like dealing with a child or immature teenager; whilst the serial bully may be an adult on the outside, on the inside they are like a child who's never grown up - and probably never will. Serial bullies and harassers often have disordered thinking patterns and do not share the same thoughts or values as you.

The second rule is to keep all abusive emails. Create a new folder, perhaps called "Abuse", and move hate mail and flame mail into this folder. You don't have to read it. When the time comes to take action, this folder of hate mail and flame mail is your evidence. Bullies, especially cyberbullies, are obsessive people and if their account is closed down you may start receiving mail from another address. This can later be compared to the abusive emails you've already received to identify the perpetrator. You'll find the same words, phrases and strategies occurring.

The third rule is to understand bullying. Read through Bully OnLine carefully, understand the profile of the serial bully. Recognise that you are not dealing with a person who has the same mindset as yourself. Bullying, and especially cyberbullying, has links with stalking - see www.bullyonline.org/related/stalking.htm for links to stalking sites.

Rule four is get help. If you're a young person, this is essential. Even mature experienced adults often cannot handle bullying and harassment by themselves. Sometimes you are dealing with a severely disordered and dangerous individual.

Rule five is become alert to provocation. It could be called "The Baiting Game". A provocative comment is made and those who respond spontaneously in irritation (eg non-assertively) are then encouraged to engage in conflict with those who respond without irritation (eg assertively). The provoker watches, waits and stirs the pot with the occasional additional provocation. What interests me is the sense of gratification that a provoker gains from watching others indulge in destructive interaction initiated by him- or herself. In this context, gratification is a perverse form of satisfaction akin to, but distinct from, pleasure.

The sixth rule is become an observer. Although you may be the target of the cyberbully's anger, you can train yourself to act as an observer. This takes you out of the firing line and enables you to study the perpetrator and collect evidence. When people use bullying behaviours they project their own weaknesses, failings and shortcomings on to others. In other words, they are telling you about themselves by fabricating an accusation based on something they themselves have done wrong. Whenever you receive a flame mail or hate mail, train yourself to instinctively ask the question, "What is this person revealing about themselves this time?"

The seventh rule is decide if you want to take action, and if so, prepare carefully and strike hard. Sometimes refusing to respond and engage will result in the cyberbully losing interest and going off to find someone easier to torment. Sometimes though, especially if there has been interaction in the past, the cyberbully is so obsessed that s/he cannot and will not let go. You will have to make that person let go, but only through swift, hard, legal action, and only when the time is right. Don't deal with the abuser yourself (this encourages bullies and stalkers), use a third party such as a solicitor.

Finally a reminder - never try to mediate, negotiate, conciliate or otherwise deal with a bully or stalker yourself. Always remember Rule #1: don't respond, don't interact and don't engage.

My page on stalking which includes a behaviour profile of the Internet stalker may prove interesting.

Bully OnLine is a gold mine of insight and information on bullying which identifies the different types of harassment and bullying, and exposes the principal perpetrator, the serial bully. Everyone, whether they're receiving flame mails or hate mail or not, knows at least one person in their life with the profile of the serial bully. Click here to see ...who does this describe in your life?

Have a look through this web site to recognise the bullies and bullying in your life ... start with Am I being bullied? then move on to What is bullying? To find out what you can do about bullying, click Action to tackle bullying. Have a look at the profile of the serial bully which is common to sociopathic managers, harassers, stalkers, rapists, violent partners, abusers, paedophiles, even serial killers of the organised kind.

If bullying and harassment have caused injury to health, commonly diagnosed as "stress", see the page on injury to health and the one on the psychiatric injury of trauma, a collection of symptoms congruent with the diagnostic criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.

Works for me. A couple threads seemed to me to be circling toward further unproductive unpleasantness so I'm gonna walk away from the tit for tat stuff and go back to posting pieces that catch my eye.

Just a bit of housekeeping.  I have pasted the "Open Letter" thread below, so that I no longer need to "sticky" it, which clutters up the beginning of the forum:
================================

Open Letter from Crafty Dog
« on: February 01, 2007, 01:09:50 PM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Howl of Greeting to All:

It has been brought to me attention that there has been concern by some
people about my mingling of politics and martial arts on the Public Forum.

For me, it was logical to do so.  With the attack by the Islamo-Fascists on
911, Dog Brother Martial Arts' mission statement of "Walk as a Warrior for
all your days" naturally connected with the idea of the heroes of Flight 93
on 911.  In short, as behooves a free people,  the idea is that "We the
people" step forward in our own behalf-- just as envisioned by our Founding
Fathers in the Second Amendment of our Constitution and in Section 311 of
Title 10 of the US Code.

As I see it, our homeland is under attack.  This attack did not begin on 911.  It did not
finish with the attack of 911.  911 was simply one step in a progression--
the next step of which may include nuclear contamination.   (Even on 911 the
risk was there:  What would have happened had the Islamo Fascists had flown
Flight 93 into the nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island and left
Pennsylvania glowing for several hundred years?)

THIS is the context in which I began including politics on the General
Forum.

Where I rather blithely have missed the point however was in my failure to
appreciate that some people on the Public Forum were worried that
participation in Dog Brothers Martial Arts meant agreement, or would be
taken by others to mean agreement with my distinctive politics.

Certainly this has not been my intention!

I am well aware that intelligent people of good faith can and do come to
different conclusions about how to best go about responding to the
challenges and dangers of our time!

So, please allow me to be perfectly clear: Dog Brothers Martial Arts is for
anyone of any political or religious persuasion that accepts Respect,
Reciprocity and Reason as the basis of human interaction.  When we come
together to train, it is as if we are part of the Olympics.

To accentuate this principle, we have re-organized the public forum so as to
put Politics in its own Forum.  The Spanish language forum continues as
before, but the previous General Forum has now been divided into three
forums:

·         Martial Arts and related matters:

·         Science, Culture & Humanities

·         Politics & Religion:

Whichever forum(s) you go to, we promise you high-IQ, informed, passionate, and lively reading.

Whenever possible, please put something in the subject heading for your posts.  For example, in the "video clips of interest" thread, it will help someone search for the video URL you post if the post subject has a title e.g. "multiple player, 2 KOs" or something of the sort.

If you are in Jacksonville, NC be sure to visit Schwanicks Gentlemans club.  You wont regret it.  There is more memorabilia in there than any Military museum I have ever been to.  Ask a local Marine for directions...  You wont regret it.

I'm back from a fine time in Bloomington.

I have a feeling of being able to settle in for a while after several months of seminars, government work, the DB Gathering, another matter that took great amounts of time at a fairly heavy emotional cost, etc etc.

I am really looking forward to getting my groove on!

PS:  Folks, now that starting today my wife will be visiting my mother for a week and so during that time all will be glorious chaos here

We were in Huddersfield in Yorkshire for the opening of a friends MMA gym, Rebecca Kane is the first woman (to on her own) in the UK to open up an FMA/MMA gym.  She had Wanderlei Silva (who's in the UK on a seminar tour) to open the gym and give a little talk.  Becky is a friend of the UK Clans and asked if we could do some demo fights, Guro Lonely heard about this and took the opportunity to come over from Switzerland for the chance to meet Wanderlei.

So, Guro Lonely, myself, Scotty Dog and C-Psycho Bitch did a few 'demonstration bouts' with Wandelei in attendance.  According to Mr Silva "Stickfighting is cool!" and he left with a gift from Guro L of a DBMA dvd!  ;D

On behalf of Point Dog, here is a photo from that event.

Congratulations and good luck to Rebecca Cane on the opening of her new gym; Congrats also to Guro Lonely, Point Dog, Scotty Dog and C-Psycho Bitch for their work on behalf of DBMA; and many thanks to Wanderlei Silva (whom I've not met) for being there.

Title: THE FIRE HYDRANT - new feature on DBMA Training Groups
Post by: Spartan Dog on January 03, 2012, 10:02:52 AM
Hi All.

This is mostly for those of you who are DBMA Group Leaders.  I've posted a similar message on the member's Forum, but its important that it be on the Public Forum as well, so all can view it.

Before I say anything else, let me state that I've checked with Guro Crafty and Guro Lonely regarding the idea I am about to present here, and they agree its worth trying out.

As some of you know, the site I have developed (dogbrothers.gr (http://www.dogbrothers.gr/)) is now at a satisfactory stage. Its primary purpose is to provide info on the Dog Brothers and DBMA to Greek-speakers, but its also in English.

Now then...whenever I attend a Gathering in Switzerland, I am amazed at the number of small DBMA training groups, who are relatively unknown in the 'States, but work hard and  IMHO are worth getting to know.

So what I propose, is every few weeks, on the dogbrothers.gr site, I add an article with photos on

  or

I propose starting with three such write-ups (at once), and then an additional one every three to six weeks.

I would also like to feature groups in the US, and elsewhere (to introduce the to European audiences), but at the beginning, there will be a focus on those about whom there is relatively little information.

The idea is to

The last point, is done in the following way:  I developed the dogbrothers.gr site so someone with a non-English browser, will see the Google translate bar at the top - allowing them to translate the English into their own language with one click.  In this way, an article on a group in France or Slovenia, can be understood by people there.

I hope it will prove to be interesting and beneficial to all.

 :-) :-) :-)

I love this idea, Kostas.  As the Pack and Tribe grow, I think that continuing a sense a community is imperative for their continued strength and growth.  Good work!

Thank-you.  Yes, I was struck by some of the lesser known tribe members I came across - how they fought so well, with few training partners to help them prepare  There are also such people and groups in North America (the NoHo and Hawaiian clans come to mind) - known to those who attend the US Gatherings, but barely "visible" to those of us abroad. There is also a group down in Argentina, who has been training faithfully for quite some time now.

There are other "stories" here as well - the German groups (of which there are several) have for some time now, gotten together every few months to train and test one another.  In the UK, such a "multi-clan fight day" has been happening too (Point Dog has been involved in this).

So there have been various events/stories that may require a bit of chasing down, but I think its worth looking into  :-)

it would be also interesting what kind of philosophy and/or principle (maxim/motto/ central theme) the different Training Groups have.

Title: Stephen W. Browne, new member
Post by: Crafty_Dog on October 04, 2012, 10:43:49 PM
Hi, I'm a new member here, at the kind invitation of Marc Denny.

My name is Stephen Browne, I'm 61 years old. I am first and foremost a father to two children Jerzy Waszyngton Browne, age 11, and Judyta Ilona Browne, age 6. Unfortunately a single father trying to do best by my kids.

My son's name is Polish, he was born in Warsaw two weeks after 9/11, which is how he came to be named "George Washington Browne."

My daughter is named for Jerzy's godmother, and her namesake, Judith Hatton, now sadly deceased, and a dear friend in Lithuania, Ilona Daukene, who died in the mushroom poisoning epidemic that hit northern Europe some years back.

Judith Hatton was an Englishwoman, the wife of a KGB agent (from SMERSH no less) who defected to the UK after WWII.

Martial arts-wise, I am ranked Dai saam (3rd degree black sash) in Wu-Wei Gung Fu, Recognized Instructor in Pekiti Tirsia Kali, and intermediate to advanced ranking in about a half-dozen others.

In the years 1991-2004 I lived in Poland, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Saudi Arabia, and traveled throughout Eastern Europe quite a lot.  I was elected Honorary Member of the Yugoslav Movement for the Protection of Human Rights in 1997.

I returned to the States to get formal training in journalism after getting some really great stories as an amateur. I interviewed the wife of a murdered dissident in Belarus, and covered the election that brought down Milosevic from the streets of Belgrade.

I'm now paying my dues, starting from the bottom again and a rural daily newspaper in Minnesota.

I love the martial arts, but have not had the opportunity to train as much as I'd like, nor am I 25 anymore, but determined to "walk as a warrior all my days."

Very pleased to meet you all

All, Our adventure was one of a private nature, our group is small and we had 4 of the desert dogs in attendance. Guro Crafty knows all of us, and we were VERY privledged to be able to take part in some of his "Killing knife training" This material is super fantastic, super deadly, super fun to train and SUPER SERIOUS BAD ASS stuff!!! Not for the faint of heart. (seriously)

If ever you get the chance to spend time with Guro Crafty and train this material I HIGHLY recommend you take advantage of this!! Trust me you will be Blown away.
I can't wait to get into this material further and deeper as we just got the introduction version. (which is deadly as h#ll in its own right)
TAC  WOOF!!   Howling Dog

At 61 I pride myself on the fact I can still do everything I could when I was 25.

Only difference is that when I do now, it hurts for days...

Title: Please use the Subject line
Post by: Crafty_Dog on March 18, 2013, 04:40:49 PM
Folks:

The Subject line is there for a reason.  If you use it, then it will be possible for people to find your post with the Search Function.

For example, if you are looking for like-minded folks or a school in , , , Boca Raton, FL   then please put "Boca Raton, FL" in the subject heading.

TIA,
CD

I was talking to Frankie McRae today. He's working as the tech adviser on a new TV show. They told him they were sending two MMA fighters for him to train in gun skills. Turns out the two fighters were Forest Griffin and Stefan Bonner!

So, Frankie is teaching them "the Crafty Dog Stance" and FG says "You know Marc Denny? Tell him hello for me."

Even my son thinks this is cool  8-)

I heard Forrest Griffin interviewed on the radio a while ago. He sounded like a real sharp guy. Quick witted and good sense of humor.

His book on life in the MMA is supposed to be quite witty.  I looked to buy it in an airport once, but it was out of stock.

Thanksgiving Proclamation
President George Washington
City of New York, October 3, 1789

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor, and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be. That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks, for his kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation, for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war, for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed, for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions, to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually, to render our national government a blessing to all the People, by constantly being a government of wise, just and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed, to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord. To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and Us, and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Anyway, so there I was at the gym yesterday talking with three friends: Krzysztof_Soszynski (6-3 in the UFC), Tony Fryklyn (fought Anderson Silva for the title), and Pedro Munhoz (just had his first UFC fight) and it occurred to me that all three were or had been UFC fighters. Today I ran into Lyoto Machida.

A man could go further and do worse.

A Sad Howl:

Cindy's best friend of 36 years, Teresa, just passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.  She was 57 and suddenly keeled over while having dinner with friends.  We are stunned and very sad.

Cindy will be flying back to Virginia on Monday and returning on Friday so while she is gone Reality around here is being put on hold.

Just got back from five days at the Akita Tactical HQ (a.k.a. Kevin Carr's house with our factory having taken over his two car garage) in Emunclaw WA. Awesome view of Mt Ranier from his back deck!

Lloyd de Jongh flew in from Warsaw, Poland (where he now lives) for the festivities. Very good times as Lloyd and I worked on our new system with Kevin (a former pro MMA fighter and a long time student of mine) chiming in.

We came up with a name for the system that pleases us greatly and a design concept for the logo which Kevin is busy reifying right now. When it is done, the name and logo will be revealed.

Really excited by what is happening here.

Lloyd's movements look like a very interesting combination of Dutch-Indo silat and Capoiera-style broken rhythm entry and intent-masking movements.  Can't wait to see what you two have come up with!
