Martial Arts Topics / Occupy Boston crack dealers arrested
« on: November 05, 2011, 05:07:14 PM »
http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/view/2011_1105hub_to_occupy_shape_up_or_ship_out/srvc=home&position=2

City officials are vowing to keep the heat on derelict protest-crashers at Occupy Boston, while some demonstrators are calling for drug dealers and lawbreakers to hit the road.

“We are looking to get our act together,” said Mike Ippolito, an Occupier who has lived in the makeshift camp since its first day. “Actions are being taken to tighten up. ... I believe weapons, drugs and alcohol have no place here.”

Just this week, cops have made two drug busts, including one yesterday in which three men were nabbed for allegedly peddling crack cocaine.

Undercover cops probing reports of drug dealing in the tent city busted Atu Austin, 31, of Roxbury and Lamont Daughtery, 21, and Thomas McLaughlin, 29, both of Hyde Park, on charges of selling crack. The alleged drug deal began in the encampment and culminated near the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter, authorities said.

“As is evident by our recent drug arrests, we continue to send a very clear message to those individuals that drug distribution will not be tolerated,” Boston police spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said.

In addition to the drug busts, several unruly homeless people have been removed from the site, including one who allegedly menaced Occupiers with a knife. Police are also probing Occupy-related vandalism downtown and expect arrests soon, Driscoll said.

Nice!  What were you using?

Woof, Cord,
Sorry I didn't see your post sooner. I was using Geritol; meth and coke stopped working years ago. :-D Actually, I'm shooting a Glock 35.

Good news: OWS sets up women-only tent to help cut down on rapes

posted at 4:16 pm on November 5, 2011 by Allahpundit

Grim perfection from Glenn Reynolds: “I guess they really are taking Tahrir Square as their model.”

Let it sink in: Their protests now need rape shelters. This is actually happening. And New York City lets it go on.

Zuccotti Park has become so overrun by sexual predators attacking women in the night that organizers felt compelled to set up a female-only sleeping tent yesterday to keep the sickos away.

The large, metal-framed “safety tent” — which will be guarded by an all-female patrol — can accommodate as many as 18 people and will be used during the day for women-only meetings, said Occupy Wall Street organizers.

“This is all about safety in numbers,” said Becky Wartell, 24, a protester from Portland, Maine…

Some of the male OWS protesters remained in denial over the growing number of sex attacks.

“Sexual harassment gets called rape, and it’s not,” one scoffed when told of the women’s tent.

This can’t be repeated enough: With a few exceptions, foremost among them the New York Post, the coverage of OWS protests compared to the coverage of tea-party protests is the worst media double standard in recent history. Nothing compares, because nothing else involves this much distortion on both ends of the coverage. It’s not just that most press outlets (like the protesters themselves) look the other way at depravity happening inside Obamaville, it’s that for years they treated the tea-party movement as some sort of feral mob that was forever on the brink of rampaging through the streets — like, say, Occupy Oakland just did. If you missed it when I posted it last week, go watch the ad the DNC ran in August 2009 when tea partiers first started showing up to town halls on ObamaCare. That set the tone. We began the year with tea-party pols being smeared as killers over a shooting they had nothing to do with and we end it with actual rapes being shrugged off by the press because they’re bad PR for a movement they support. Disgrace.

Via the Daily Caller, watch the not-at-all feral or mobbish revolutionary heroes of Occupy D.C. do their thing last night outside AFP. The video doesn’t capture the extent of the menace, either. For that, read R.S. McCain’s interview with D.C. reporter Michelle Fields, who at one point found herself surrounded by a group of men screaming “F*** Michelle Fields.” No wonder she doesn’t want to go back. Tahrir Square indeed.

OWS Protester Arrested At McDonald's

Updated: Saturday, 05 Nov 2011, 3:31 PM EDT
Published : Friday, 04 Nov 2011, 9:32 AM EDT

MYFOXNY.COM STAFF REPORT

MYFOXNY.COM - An Occupy Wall Street protestor was arrested early Friday after a violent rampage at a McDonald's that refused to offer him free food.

The NYPD says it happened at about 2:45 a.m. at a McDonald's near the make-shift tent city in Zuccotti Park.

Fisika Bezabeh, 27, went into the world's largest restaurant chain and demanded free food, apparently craving a burger over the gourmet food being served in the park.

The people behind the counter, who are working instead of protesting, were not about to offer the man free food.

Bezabeh then turned violent, ripped a credit-card reader from a counter and threw it at workers before police arrived and arrested the protester.

There have been growing concerns about security and lawlessness among the protesters.  Earlier this week, a cook at the camp was arrested on sex charges.

And video surfaced Friday morning showing two of the protesters having a fist fight inside of the park.

Mayor Bloomberg noted Thursday that instead of going to the police, the group is simply kicking law-breakers out of the park and allowing them to go free into the city.

Bezabeh was charged with criminal mischief.

Cheryll Forsatz, a McDonald’s spokeswoman, said, “It’s still an ongoing police investigation, and we’re cooperating with the police.”

Fear of Violence Spreading to Occupy Seattle

Posted by Thomas Ferdousi at 4:15 PM

With violence breaking out among members of Occupy Oakland and Denver, there is a growing concern that the movement may break out into mob storms. With the protesters losing members and even positive press coverage, there is a further concern of outright attacks beginning.

This brings us to Seattle, where these is a very real atmosphere of tensions building in the city. In 1999 the city, known for its hippy and hipster populations, saw violent protests against the World Trade Organization.

Now, it has gotten so tense that parents are even cordoning the Occupy protesters from their children. The occupiers had even squatted on a playground, creating an unsafe environment:

“He likes going out in the sandbox and playing and he can’t do that anymore,” Crawford says.

Crawford says he walked around the area near the playground and saw empty beer cans and smelled marijuana.

Just as in Oakland, tensions between the police and the protesters are increasing, so much so that violence may begin in the Northwest city.

Reports of Occupy Seattle's protestors animosity towards police has been noted in confrontations since they took up encampment in Seattle's Westlake Park.

Just several weeks ago came arrests in the city as the protesters refused to move. They were met with arrests:

Those who refused are being arrested and their tents are being moved.

KOMO Radio reports there have been a half-dozen arrests for obstruction.

The costs of all of these protests for Seattle? Over $100k so far. And that's not even counting lost business and possibly lost jobs. With those factors included, the number could be much, much higher.

Benjamin David Gilmore, who has been arrested on suspicion of arson in the Oct. 24 Old Town fire, appeared before the Fort Collins City Council on Tuesday during the public comment portion of the meeting.

In his comments, Gilmore asked that the city find a way to accommodate the Occupy Fort Collins movement and allow it to stay where protesters have been gathering the past few weeks. He compared it to a special event that could be permitted by the city.

"Please, we are asking: let us continue, let us be free," he said.

Gilmore also criticized the country's banking system and the two-party political system during his remarks, comparing them to playing a game with a 5-year-old who changes the rules in order to win.

"Normally, I am very reserved and very quiet, but tonight I feel compelled that I need to address you," Gilmore told the council.

Zuccotti protesters put up women-only tent to prevent sexual assaults

It’s a safe house from the sex fiends.

Zuccotti Park has become so overrun by sexual predators attacking women in the night that organizers felt compelled to set up a female-only sleeping tent yesterday to keep the sickos away.

The large, metal-framed “safety tent” -- which will be guarded by an all-female patrol -- can accommodate as many as 18 people and will be used during the day for women-only meetings, said Occupy Wall Street organizers.

“This is all about safety in numbers,” said Becky Wartell, 24, a protester from Portland, Maine.

NO MAN’S LAND: Occupy Wall Street participants set up a women-only “safety tent” in Zuccotti Park yesterday as a protection against pervs who have been prowling the park.

“When you’re in a large group of people sleeping, you will, of course, feel a lot safer than if you were by yourself,” she added.

“It will also keep away people that might feel more inclined to prey on two- and three-people tents.”

The safety measure comes amid a terrifying spree of sexual assaults -- including an alleged rape -- in the Zuccotti Park camp.

Kitchen worker Tonye Iketubosin, 26, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly groping an 18-year-old woman after offering to help set up her tent. He is also a suspect in a rape at the park.

The grope victims include Kara Demetropoulos, who told The Post she was fondled in a tent last Saturday night after accepting a man’s offer of a place to sleep.

Most protesters have not been reporting all the incidents to police -- instead preferring to settle things on their own.

The tent and its all-female security detail is the latest crime-fighting measure, and it is already garnering much interest.

“I’m gonna be staying here,” said Olivia Chitayat, 23, who was helping to put up the tent. “It’s partially because of the recent attacks that have been happening.

“I think that this will help bring more women to the movement as well. I think a lot of women have been hesitant and especially for those that are new and don’t know a lot of people it’s hard to find a safe place to stay.”

Demetropoulos thought the safety tent was a good idea, though she doesn’t plan on using it even after her own unhappy experience.

“I feel safe in my tent, but I bet this will help a lot of other women feel a lot safer than they have been,” said the 20-year-old native of Alabama.

Some of the male OWS protesters remained in denial over the growing number of sex attacks.

“Sexual harassment gets called rape, and it’s not,” one scoffed when told of the women’s tent.

“There’s no way that it’s happening as much as people are saying it has. It’s just word spreading and getting misunderstood.”

One woman was also against the structure, saying the protesters who put it up took her tent down without notice to make room.

“I’m pissed! I pretty much just got evicted,” fumed Angelina Isfreed, 32, after returning to find her tent taken down. “I won’t be staying there.”

More people may have to move. The protest organizers plan to put up seven more large tents, including ones for gay and transgender people, co-ed tents and a medical tent.

Meanwhile, Mayor Bloomberg said on his WOR radio show that he wasn’t going to tolerate lawlessness in Zuccotti Park.

“People have the right to protest; they don’t have a right to destroy a neighborhood,” he said. “Anybody that thinks we’re going to tolerate behavior that’s not protected is wrong.”

Yesterday, former Mayor Giuliani said President Obama must take responsibility for the “very dangerous” OWS movement.

“Barack Obama owns the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement; it would not have happened but for his class warfare,” Giuliani told the conservative Americans for Prosperity Foundation summit in DC.

2) I have an official Dog Brothers Keychain. The first day, perhaps it was hectic in the morning, I was allowed to keep it. When I came back from lunch, one of the officers noticed it was a Kubotan and held onto it. I was given a receipt and told to pick it up before I left for the day. I'm thinking the officers confiscated the keychain, and yet, jurors were allowed in with canes! Truly an example of the Walking Cane being the last of the legal self-defense implements. Wonder if I showed up with a Cold Steel City Stick and effected a limp... would the cane be held? LOL

Not a Kubotan!

I wish the ACLU and similar groups would form non-profit companies that would provide contract detention/correctional facilities for counties and states. Then they could have real world examples of how to run such places. Funny how they haven't done this yet.

GLENDALE POLICE LINE OF DUTY DEATH

GLENDALE, Ariz. –The Glendale Police Department sadly announces the line of duty death of one of our own, Officer Brad Jones. Last night at about 8:30 pm, Glendale Police Officer Brad Jones responded to an apartment complex the area of 7500 W. Glendale Avenue to assist Adult Probation with contacting a probationer.  At some point during the contact, a physical struggle ensued.  Officer Jones was able to use his portable radio and several officers responded to assist him.  The suspect produced a weapon and fired at Officer Jones, seriously wounding him.

Arriving Officers saw the probationer drive westbound on Glendale Avenue in the officer’s patrol vehicle.  Several officers gave chase as the suspect became involved in a single vehicle collision in the 8100 block of West Glendale Avenue.  Officers were close behind as the suspect fled on foot from the vehicle.   When confronted by officers, he pointed a weapon at them.  Three officers responded to the threat with gunfire and the suspect was struck.

The suspect has been identified as Ryan Heisler, a 20 year old white male.  He is in critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital.  No further information about the suspect is available for release at this time. Officer Jones received emergency first aid from fellow officers and the Glendale Fire Department.  He was transported to St Joseph’s Hospital.

Surrounded by family, fellow officers and friends, Officer Brad Jones died a little after midnight.  Officer Jones has served the community as a Glendale Police Officer for four years.  He has been assigned to Patrol, working out of the Gateway Division.  He became interested in a career in law enforcement after High School and went on several ride along’s with officers in the Glendale and Phoenix Police Departments.  He had a passion for the work and helping people.  He will be deeply missed by every member of our department.

Officer Jones is a devoted husband and father.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.  Officer Jones is survived by his wife Cindy and two young children.  Information on memorial services will be provided in the coming days.  Attached is a photograph of Officer Brad Jones.

The investigation is still ongoing, and Glendale Police Detectives are still on the scene.  We are asking the public to avoid the 7400 to the 8200 block of Glendale Avenue. There will be a hard closure for approximately 10 hours.

**Rest in peace. Payers for the friends and family.

Hennepin County makes the right choice in Good Samaritan shooting

posted at 1:15 pm on October 29, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Give some credit to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, even if the outcome of the Evanovich case was nothing more than common sense. Darren Evanovich and his sister participated in an armed robbery outside of a grocery store in Minneapolis last week, which they concluded by pistol-whipping the middle-aged woman they robbed. A Good Samaritan chased after Evanovich, but Evanovich pulled the gun when he turned the corner. Unfortunately for Evanovich, the Good Samaritan had a carry permit and a handgun of his own — which he drew and fired after Evanovich drew first. Evanovich died almost immediately, and the question became whether the police and/or the DA would charge him with homicide.

Not only did Freeman decline to press charges, he commended the Good Samaritan for responding to “his fellow citizen in need”:

No charges will be filed against the “Good Samaritan” who shot and killed a robber two weeks ago in the parking lot of a Cub Foods store in Minneapolis.

That word today from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office….

According to witnesses, the man drove up to the spot where he saw Evanovich going through the victim’s purse and asked him if he wanted to give the purse back.

Witnesses say that’s when it started to turn ugly–Evanovich pointed his gun at the “Good Samaritan,” and moved towards him.

The man in the vehicle pulled out his handgun and shot Evanovich.

Authorities say after they reviewed the circumstances, they determined that the man “acted in self-defense.”

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said today in a press release, “While this man is to be commended for helping his fellow citizen in need, a note of caution is appropriate. We prefer that armed citizens do not chase after criminals. Too much can go wrong with deadly consequences.”

That’s actually good advice. As the late Joel Rosenberg wrote and taught, a carry permit is not a Junior G-Man badge. In those circumstances, people would be better advised to call 911 and let the police deal with the situation rather than confronting an assailant known to be armed. However, it was clear from the beginning that the Good Samaritan didn’t initiate the deadly threat, and that the perp was a dangerous person.

If all you knew about this case came from the local media, however, you’d never know that. My radio partner and carry-permit activist Mitch Berg has followed this case closely at Shot in the Dark, and has blasted the coverage this case received from local print and TV. That includes KSTP, which produced today’s much more balanced report, and WCCO, which gave Evanovich’s mother a sympathetic interview that made the claim that Evanovich was the victim. The Star Tribune printed a lengthy article that focused on Evanovich’s dedication to his community, which unsurprisingly left out a few details about Evanovich’s last few moments of life, and made it sound as if the Good Samaritan had just hunted Evanovich down like a dog.

In fact, here’s a great look at Matt McKinney’s “reporting” on this story:

The investigation ensnared Evanovich’s sister, Octavia Marberry, this week when she was jailed on allegations of fraud and aggravated robbery. She had been with Evanovich the night he died, and according to their mother, held him in her arms as he took his last breath.

She was “with Evanovich the night he died,” all right — she was an accomplice in the crime:

Authorities say they believe 20-year-old Octavia Marberry of Minneapolis has possibly been involved as an accomplice in this and two other store parking lot robberies.

According to the criminal complaint, on Thursday, October 20th, a 53-year-old woman was robbed just before 10:00 p.m. outside the Cub Foods on 26th Avenue and struck in the head by a gun held by the robber, 23-year-old Darren Evanovich.

Minneapolis Police say their investigation showed that at least two other people were with him and one of them was Marberry.

In fact, in the new KSTP report above, it sounds as though Octavia Marberry may have been the ringleader of this gang. The investigation didn’t “ensnare” her, as the Strib tries to frame it — Marberry was always at the center of it.

Given the kind of pressure that the local media tried to put on Freeman, his decision to do the right thing is all the more remarkable. Kudos to him, and jeers to the local media that tried to turn a victim into a criminal and the criminals into victims. They should be ashamed of themselves. They won’t be, but they should.

You can bet that Mitch and I will be discussing this on today’s NARN, so be sure to tune in.

Shotguns have a great role in defending fixed positions at close ranges. Even birdshot from a 12 gauge is devistating within 15 feet or so. Most anyone can afford a shotgun and some training/range time with it.

If you live in a place with shall issue CCW laws, it's a serious mistake not to have one.

If someone is trying to breach your door, I'm assuming that there is a degree of delay, allowing for a response, yes?

Is it going to be enough time to allow law enforcement to respond? Probably not.

Enough time for the resident/s to arm themselves and move behind cover? Most likely yes.

Of course this requires a degree of training and planning. Something some are willing to do, and some are not.

Doug,

I'd point out states with "Make my day" laws, like Colorado have low rates of home invasions/occupied dwelling burglary calls.

Solid, secured doors and a plan to repel assaulters can make the difference.

Justice Dept: 12k cops out of work by year's end

Reductions will put law enforcement on pace for its first job decline in 25 years

By Kevin Johnson
USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — By year's end, nearly 12,000 police officers will have lost their jobs, and 30,000 positions in county and municipal departments will go unfilled, both direct consequences of a faltering economy that has forced deep cuts in local government budgets.

The sweeping reductions, outlined in a Justice Department review to be delivered today to the nation's police chiefs meeting in Chicago, put law enforcement on pace for its first job decline in 25 years.

"The effects of the economic downturn on law enforcement agencies may be felt for the next five to 10 years, or worse, permanently,'' the report concluded, adding that the days when local governments allocated up to 50% of their budgets for public safety are "no longer a fiscal possibility.''

In any threat situation, one must survive the immediate threat before worrying about longer term issues. A running gag, and a central theme throughout the film, is the list of rules Columbus comes up with for surviving in the zombie-infested world. By the end of the film, his list has thirty-three rules; only some of them are mentioned. A series of promotional videos starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg expanded on the list presented in the film.[6]

I'd think the zombie scenario is where kukris and machetes would really shine.   :-D

P.S. if ppl. are worried about the pagan origins of Halloween, they are going to flip when they hear about Christmas.

Well, I'm glad that only 10 years after 9/11 we can start having movies that show the military as heroes. I guess it's ok since BooooOOOOOOooooosh is no longer president.

Some guys just can't help but set themselves up... reminds me of a story one of my NCOs told me about a guy who appeared in one of the first commercials touting the Army's new "Army of One" campaign, which was to replace the old "Be all you can be" slogan.  This particular commercial was the one with a soldier running in the desert by himself with a ruck on his back and his dog tags hanging out (big no no).  Anyway, turns out that my NCO was in the same SF selection series as this guy.  Word passed around quickly that this soldier was "the guy in the commercial."  According to my NCO, the selection cadre freaking DOGGED him mercilessly for this; when he quit, somewhere a loudspeaker blared out, "Now that the Army of One has quit, the rest of you can go back to being all you can be!!!"

I love this story.

I feel bad for that soldier. I assume he was chosen for the commercial and didn't seek it out. If he did, that's different.

Well, it certainly seems to speak well that he did not appear to be seeking publicity , , , this time   My friends at Border Patrol received the news with some humorous banter.

I saw the first "Lawman" or whatever the series was called. He was so pompous and irritating, I don't think I made it past 5-10 minutes. Afterwards, when channel surfing, I think I saw some segments where the real cops on the call were pissed at having to listen to Seagal because he's the Sheriff's buddy and cameras were there.

I'm torn between mocking him or thinking that he's doing something good.

Thanks for derailing a discussion on law enforcement because of your inability to distiguish fantasy from reality or subordinate your need for attention and approval as a compensitory mechanism for your inadiquate personality.

Actually GM, the attention is counterproductive.
The point however is valid.
Sodomy and why people shouldn't be armed, i.e., rape in the park, better yet, the police officer who pulled a woman over, then proceeded to rape and kill her? I'd love to see how you justify police being better armed than the citizens.

No, the attention is what you feed on. It's what motivates your pathological behavior. Let's discuss why you are no longer welcome in other places.

"I've been tased GM. I'll admit, I didn't know he died while in custody. Shoot me."

Well, If you'd bothered to read what was posted in the thread earlier, you'd know. But that would interfere with your internet chest-thumping/Walter Mitty-esque attention-seeking, which I think is your real agenda here.
