Hmm, I'd say that the ankle & gimp-hood related problems have healed *enough* for me to fight. Whether I'll fight as well as I'd like to on it... well, I guess I'll find out!

Just a tiny addition to the excellent info haumana2000 has provided.
Olohe Kaihewalu's website has some interesting bits on the history of lus and also provides some nice pics & descriptions of a number of traditional weapons. www.olohe.com I believe there's even some info on lima lama tucked away somewhere in the history section. Oh, and I'll second Haumana2000 on the convincing nature of Olohe's locks!
One last thing. I was under the impression that Tino Tui'olosega's lima lama encompassed punching, kicking, & open handed material, as well as weapons like stick & knife. Lima lama translated = hands of wisdom. And from what I've heard, he also practiced other arts while in the military. So, possibly, those 13 forms weren't all stick-based or "entirely" on arts from his family (Samoan royalty I think). I'll try to get more accurate info on this.

Hi Groundhog,
Kendo is a fun sport. I studied it for awhile in college and enjoyed the time I spent doing it. However, what makes for a great sport doesn't always make for great self-defense training. Is it better than polishing off a Costco size sack of chips and a bottle of scotch every night? Absolutely. Then again, a lot of other sports fit that bill too... (Heck, you could even try rugby!)
So if you want a fun activity that'll give you a decent work out, go for it. Or if you've already trained extensively and want to try it to experiment with or enhance specific elements of your fighting, it might be interesting. However, in terms of studying it primarily to develop practical fighting techniques and sensibilities for today's world, I'm *very* leery of its utility. You could try posting something at www.kendo-world.com/forum/ for thoughts from people who still practice it.
In either case, I hope you find a good group of people to train with.

Awesome post! Actually - thank YOU!! It is exactly what I was trying to steer the thread towards in my first reply. B/c IMHO, a technical discussion of HOW to make training more effective in this context is more interesting and honestly - far more useful. Talking about how we think others should/shouldn't behave is all good and well. But as MA students or instructors, what SPECIFICALLY, can we do for ourselves, our training partners, or others? What's been done? What worked? Didn't work? Why?
Admittedly, it's especially interesting to me b/c several weeks ago a woman who recently left a years-long abusive relationship started at the school where I train. Our instructor pairs her w/ women on some drills and since I'm one of two other women there regularly, I work with her a lot. All extraordinary experiences and cause for much contemplation. MANY thoughts & questions but I'm swamped right now so I'm going to have to come back to this in a few days.
