I already have a knife fight set. The sword I use is about 28"... if you dont have one I'm sure there will be one there for you to use. But the rest sounds good!

Anxiously I look forward to switching up my Sunday of rest to honor all those before and beside me in this Open Gathering. To date, I've one match set for a double sword/krabi krabong. I'd like to set a bolo y daga, a tomahawk and long blade and possibly a nice lunch after...

I would be up for a blade/sword and the lunch after....

Dax ... U name it I'm game. Dbl knife is A-OK
It will be great to see you as well.

Migs.... Down for whatever Brother.

On another note..... I am pretty sure I will NOT be in attendance for the Open  :-(

My wife is running the Chicago Marathon in Oct. She will be running 20 miles the day on the open in a mach race in Chicago.
As much as I want to be out there fighting, I feel a greater need to be here supporting her. With all of my training, cage fights, Gatherings, teaching classes..... she stands behind 100% ofthe time. I need and want to be here for her on this one.

Next Gathering for me will most likely be up North in Feb. 2014

WOOF  :-D

Stepped into the laboratory (cage) over the weekend. Fought a tough kid 5-0 holds several championship belts and is a Juco national wrestling champ. So i had my work cut out for me but I knew what I had to do. Bottom line I lost the fight - 1st round 2:11 TKO

I started off in the Dracula structure - low and knees bent. As the bell rang, I began to circle slow and then gained speed as I entered in with the a backhand followed by an uppercut. I felt the backhand could have had a bit more on it.... but the uppercut made up for it.
After that I remember my opponent covering and becoming stationary. THIS IS WHERE I F*CK#D UP!!!! Instead of "Stinking Him" I backed off and assessed the damage and posed for the cameras. Thats when he decided enough of this and just took me down. After we rolled for a bit and  beat on me the ref called it. I took some of his best shots and walked out just fine which I am  :-D about.

Spoke with my opponent and his corner man after the fight. They both were thrown off by the appearance of the Dracula structure. Both had no idea what was about to happen and it freaked them out a bit. The response in the fight from my opponent was to cover and weather the storm. Which is Y I am  :-(   WHEN WE HAVE ADVANTAGE, WE TAKE ADVANTAGE.... HE IS THE TURD AND WE ARE THE SMELL WHEREVER HE GOES WE FOLLOW!!! AND IF IS STANDING STILL COVERING UP WE KEEP BEATING ON HIM, CIRCLING TOWARDS HIS BACK AND DOING OTHER COOL MARTIAL ARTS AND CRAFTS !!!

This is how I recall the fight... plz keep in mind I took some good shots to the head  :| When I get some video I will post it.

Last good workout before my fight this Saturday:

6 rounds - 5min ea with a 1 min rest in-between rounds

Each round was broken down as follows:
1min stand up with partner - he was working strikes with emphasis on takedowns. I was working Kali Tudo and stuffing the takedowns
1min ground n pound on heavy bag while my partner rests
1min ground work with partner - strikes n submissions
1 min sprawl onto heavy bag, pick up heavy bag, press heavy bag from one shoulder to the other n back, put bag down n repeat while partner rests
1min partner with 16oz gloves on - starts in superior position on ground, I defend and work escapes.

Felt pretty good. Worked hard throughout. Wasn't easy but finished strong.

It was a great fight day. Alot of new guys stepping out for the first time and they did well. Other regulars coming out to play also showed improved abilities.  Good fights, great spirit and a talented photographer as you can see. I think by Sept. the Midwest Tribe will be ready and present at the Open. DBIYCB - WOOF  :-D

I'll be there. Just asked Dogzilla for a dance  :-)

Would the Tribal be on the 1st day or 2nd?
I like the fact fighters have more options if they cant make it out for Sept.

Martial Arts Topics / Re: Escrima styles
« on: February 12, 2012, 10:35:19 AM »
"Just wondering what others have observed about different styles of escrima and their suitability in full contact engagements."

"Do others feel certain styles are more suitable for fighting?"

Here is my take on the above 2 questions from Yomitches posts.

I teach my students that we have to main areas: Sport & Street. When I hear "full contact engagements" I take that as sport or a contest. "Fighting" can also fall under that category, but for the street it is all about survival. I find that the DBMA style composed of many styles and systems is great for a full contact engagement. I have trained in other styles of escrima and I feel it comes down to how you train it as Yomitches said "under stress". Yomitches makes a good observation when he said "But a determined, aggressive opponent makes years of their/your training disappear." I have seen this first hand at the MMA gym I teach and train at. Young men 19/20 yrs old, great athletic ability and minimal training can give you a good run for your $$$. Therefor not every style or every move is suitable for everyone. The practitioner must find what works for them and continue to train his/her in "their own style". This is the concept Bruce Lee had, your escrima is not my escrima (paraphrased). Having a well rounded structure that is adaptable is very important IMHO. Also having a gameplan / fighting strategy vs a specific style is critical, I'm not a huge fan of just winging it. I feel this also applies to the street but looks very different compared to a full contact stick fight. Guro Marc has some great material/concepts for street application as well with the DLO - Die Less Often dvds which you can find at dogbrothers.com

Hope the above makes sense  :-)

Hello All,

My name is Pete. Rep Chicago and DBMASP. Very excited to meet many of you and have some fun. New to this forum thing so i hope i am doing this right.

My bud Carlos and I are looking to do a 2 on 2 knife fight. Any takers?

Mostly looking at single stick fights for myself, maybe a DBL stick - no rules (as i have seen posted before... assuming this means ground and hidden knife?)

Would like to get in as many fights as i can 3-5, is this realistic?

I am humbly open to a challenge/ ass kickin, you only live once! Just look for the dude in the  :-) mask

Where is the Chicago school and can I get more info about it?

I'm an LEO in Rockford, IL, and looking to find out more and get into the DBMA training. Would love to attend any seminars/training offered in the area.

Thanks!
