Martial Arts Topics / Recipes for padded weapons?
« on: May 25, 2005, 05:31:30 PM »
Thanks for the tips!
I actually experimented with regular old "pier 1/cost plus" bamboo, approx. 1.5".  I know it's weak compared to rattan, and much more succeptible to splitting.  It is however, pretty cheap and wrapped in pipe insulation and duct tape, it holds up pretty well, and is light weight.  I'll eventually spring for some "real" padded sticks if my interest in this art/sport/aggro release continues to deepen.  Meantime, I'll give your method some thought and, if time/materials permit, a try.  Thanks.

Thanks for the eye opener.  I'm not a penny pincher when it comes to the knives in my collection.  For the price of a Benchmade or similar knife I could get 3 or 4 well made padded weapons.  I guess I just wanted to do something homegrown as I only really have 2 guys to spar with regularly.  Also, being as we don't have years of experience behind us we tend to err on the side of slightly lighter hits.  Thanks for the tips guys, and I checked out smak stiks, I don't know why they haven't turned up in my web searches before?

Just wondering....the offerings from Actionflex and Sof-Stix look great but are a little pricey for me.  I've found many sites with directions for making those lame Dungeons and Dragons RPG live action weapons, they call them "boffers".  Sounds like a dirty word from the UK.  I don't want to pretend I'm Lancelot, I want to wail hard on my buddy, Filipino style, with a good, padded weapon.  (I don't have full contact Dog balls yet)
If anybody has good (cheap) ideas, please lemme know.

Those kids watch way too much Jackass!
Actually, stunts like that are great because they aren't hurting anyone but themselves.  I hear parents complain about reality/stupid stunt shows.  Think logically about it....If a kid is stupid enought to emulate what he sees on TV, he gets what he deserves, be it an animal bite, or a concussion!  Natural selection in action in our busy, hight tech world.

Hey, wasn't "my idea".  I was just joking, knowing that some yahoo catering to tactical macho warrior dudes would come up with a product to make a buck off of people with too much money and time.  I have seen/handled a few of McClung's blades though, and they are tough SOB's!  Someone once told me he shot one of his pet dogs for biting or barking at a guest, then boiled the skull and keeps it on his mantel.  Does anybody know if this is true?  If so, I suppose he's a real MAD dog.

Somebody should make a movie in which Mary Poppins carries one of these in case she runs out of ammo for her fancy custom 1911 pistol.

If any sparring buddies have bad hearts, make 'em sign a release/waver form!  If this thread ever gets the attention it deserves, you know it'll be 6 months before some enterprising tactical wanna-be kinda guy comes out with a stungun on a knife handle and charges $400 bucks!  Remember that almost forgettable Tom Cruise gem; "Minority Report"?  The cops had jetpacks AND these batons that cause instant vomiting when they touch a victim!  God!  Think what fun could be had on public transportation if these were real!

Let's not forget the finest version of "Louie, Louie".  Seattle garage rock pioneers The Sonics rocked a really heavy "ahead of it's time" version.  Alas they never broke through into nationwide success.  Maybe this was due to their penchant for referring to the Ford Mustang as a "Boss Hoss" in song.

People here in Seattle should be going crazy for this!  It's drizzling as I write this.  Unfortunately, the frightened political climate is such that even my baby (under 2" blade) gerber work knife gets horrified looks now and then!   My job sometimes entails middle-of-the-rainy-night out calls to apartment complexes and  hotels in the heart of the city.  This umbrella, coupled with my surefire nitrolon (plastic) flashlight would be great used in tandem.  I think I'll wait to see if these Dogs make it available before I order one for next year's rainy season.

YES!  Again, many thanks to those who've posted!  I just hit day 21, or 22? It doesn't matter at this point, what does is that I'm comfortable living without nicotine as my master.  The gum works pretty well, surprisingly.  I really had to give my willpower a swift kick though.  I feel stronger because of this and have been concentrating my energy trying exercises in Matt Furey's "Combat Conditioning".  If you can get past his silly "in your face HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE" style of advertising, this stuff is pretty cool.  I had trouble initially with Hindu Squats because of past foot surgeries (resection of subtalar coalition,  achilles extension +more) but every try it gets easier.

Still smoke free- you guys rule!  The chew is gone and so's the nicotine gum.  I'm relying on a costco size pack of eclispe!  It's nice to have a habit that doesn't make me stink any more than I do already.

Neurosis is an underground legend from the Bay Area.  They are true pioneers of sound and warriors of experimentation.  Every live show I've seen since I was 15 is amazing!  They have been described as "tribal metal" and "the Pink Floyd of punk rock".  Both quotes don't do them justice!  If you are open minded and want to explore the depths of human fear, aggression and spirituality, give them a spin.  Enemy of the Sun is a very fine album, my favorite is Through Silver In Blood.  They used to do a lot of tribal drumming and drum circles on stage.  As these guys age, their music becomes increasingly, slightly more mellow.  They used to scream, now they sing and occasionally scream.  Steve Von Till is my guitar hero and Neurosis' bass player Dave Edwardson is the guy who I hopelessly tried to emulate while recording with my last band!  They are firece and put on an amazing multimedia show live.  They (Neurosis)are much like the Dog Brothers:  Intrepid, relentless and unafraid of opinions.  Just my two cents, they will always reign as my all time favorite band and I love doing pushups to their music.

I've hit day#14 and feel good, used Skoal "apple blend" chew for a few days.  It's surprisingly tasty, but it's just as bad or worse as smokes!  Switched to nicotine gum now!  I average about 3 pieces daily and when it runs out I'm switching to regular gum ie:'eclipse' or 'dentyne' or something.  My lung capacity is incredible, feels like it's doubled!  Thanks to all for the support and suggestions.  When I spend time on FMA inspired stick sparring (medium contact, no pads, avoid face and groin) with my pal who smokes, we have to take breaks so he can catch his breath, while I'm ready to go!

Depending on the level of combatant ferocity at the next gathering, maybe Guro Crafty would do well to invest  in a 50 gallon drum of Coke to wash the life juice from the ground!

Thanks to everyone for the ideas and kind words.  I'm doing ok with the help of lots of candy and willpower.  I keep thinking that with the money I'll have saved by not smoking, I'll soon be able to order some DB dvd's!

thanks to all!  great suggestions.  Today was better and I've been eating sour jelly beans and m&ms all day. If I get fatter I'll just work it off after I've succeeded in quitting.  I ordered Matt Furey's 'Combat conditioning'  I've heard some positive things, even though his site is very hype-oriented.  I calculated that @ about $6.00 per pack, pack a day, I was spending over $120.00 monthly on deathsticks.  I'll take that knowledge and keep in mind that could be a car payment or a new Benchmade knife for my collection every month!   Again thanks for the support, it helps that my girlfriend quit 2 years ago and hasn't allowed me to smoke indoors since then.   All good ideas, thanks for responding, here goes day 4.

After 10 years of countless dollars wasted on tobacco and ill-effects to my health, I've decided to quit.  I'm trying to get my body in shape again and finally found the strength (for now) to quit.  Does anybody have any tips?  I was hooking up cable service to TV's at work and started shaking uncontrollably, I've been dripping sweat all day and have felt like I'm at the breaking point!  With the money I would've spent on smokes I'm planning on investing in MA dvd's and equipment.  That's my main motivation, plus not ending up minus one lung like my dad.  Just wondering if anyone who used to smoke has any suggestions????

The Mythbusters on the Disovery channel actually  recently (last 9-12 months) debunked some of these Coke myths, while also proving some (chrome cleaner=true).

You guys both made great points, thank you.  It never really seemed necessary to yell when stickfighting, maybe because I'm more focused on not getting hit.  I just wondered what seasoned players had to say....great input, thanks for your time.

Martial Arts Topics / silly question
« on: April 04, 2005, 06:16:36 PM »
I'm relatively new to FMA/stick arts etc.  Every MA instructor I've ever had (TKD, Karate etc.) emphasized the need for a "kiap" or power shout when striking....Is this common in escrima/FMA?  I read in Mark Wiley's great book on Kalis Ilustrisimo that "the face should be expressionless" which makes sense, (you shouldn't telegraph emotions/grit the teeth etc).  In much of the footage I've seen of these arts being practiced, the players seem silent with the exception of heavy breathing and natural grunts of pain when stricken.  I know it might be a weird "newbie" question, but @ 6'3" and 275lbs. I feel that a shout or yell might serve to drive home a psychological point against an opponent in a real or controlled confrontation.  Can somebody weigh in on this and help clear up this mystery?

Fantastic, thanks so much for the positive responses!  I'm just getting into the FMA's/sticks etc. after years of inactivity related to several foot surgeries.  My surgeons told me I'd never walk normally again without a severe limp, let alone study martial arts!  I have many years' experience in TKD, starting when I was a kid, but it's really boring and hard on my feet.  I have devoured every book I can find on the subjects and I'm eager to begin real training!  Thanks again for the support.

-peace and respect

Hey All!
Just wondering if anybody knows any reputable and well qualified stick based arts instructors in the greater Seattle area?  I can't seem to find a well rounded facility that focuses on FMA!
