Looking for a single, or a single and knife or a double stick- prefer a no-grappling fight this time around.
Gibby, I'm game for any of those... I've only got a knife fight scheduled so far

Woof all!  I'm late to the party as usual, as I just got my fighter form in today (thanks to Cindy for the quick turnaround)...

Hopefully everyone's dance cards aren't filled yet, or there will be a few more late posters.

I'd like to pencil in a few fights in advance (knife, single, espada y daga, or double)... my last gathering was 2008, so it'll be nice to get the rust knocked off  :-D

Pretty Kitty,

I just noticed that the attachment of "Registered Fighters" for Sept 20th is showing the old list from last year.

FYI

Please add my name to the list of Fighters and I will be dropping my registration form in the mail now.

Woof,
Kaju Dog

You're right...I need to update it.  :-)  If you plan to fight please send in a registration form.  (This means everyone!)  You may fax it to 310-943-2733 or mail it in.

Dang it... I thought I was pre-registered!  :-D

Crafty,

My friend Ken and I will be on the west coast in February and would like to attend a class, but our schedule is max flex... how much advance notice do you need, or can we just show up?  We'll give you as much advance warning as possible...  thanks much

Ryan,

14 Feb would be perfect for me... I'll be there, and I'm waiting for replies from two other Northern Virginia fighters, so I'll let you know ASAP.  We've been hoping for an event like this on the east coast for a long time, so we'll certainly be beating the drums here to bring more fighters.  Thanks!

p.s. how's your dad doing?

With all the posting on this, I confess to have been feeling a sense of wrong doing of late. (Never my intention, I never take the mat wanting to hurt someone)

I truly did apply slow constant pressure, and do again admit I was surprised that Phil was able to fight off the tap as long as he did. (I was fully expecting a quick tap)

I'll bet that everyone watching that match would agree that you were as restrained as possible in the application of that choke; please don't feel badly.  I know that at the time I was very impressed with the gradual increase in application of your weight to the choke; I saw at least three discrete changes of weight application and remember thinking "very well done".  I'm sure Phil would say the same thing.. if he could talk  :-D

What is considered "padded"?  I know Crafty that you have not allowed "hockey" gloves for some time now and leaned towards more of a street hockey glove.  Are we talking knee and elbow pads?

Woof!

Gruhn

I was assuming knee/elbow pads of foam construction (e.g. wrestling sliders); no plastic "bubble"-type pads...  :?

Reason why I go with Emerson Knives and now the Syperco Shivworks. Their knives don't have that problem and I am pretty sure Cold Steel does not either.
The Camillus HEAT series is also a nice (and inexpensive) liner-lock assisted-open knife without the aforementioned "twist and cut your finger off" problem:

It has a very strong assisted-open mechanism (takes a little getting used to), but very nice and easy to keep sharp.

Also +1 to Cold Steel... I'm partial to the Voyager series and inertial opening, though the X2 is freaking huge  .

I work on a variety of military/govt installations and have received a variety of vehicle training in response to assault/attack.  One common thread that runs thru it is also common to other defenses as well: give yourself room to maneuver.  Back into parking spaces to mnimize your exit time.  Don't wedge your car into tight, indefensible spots.  When waiting at a stop light or turn lane, leave room in front of your car to allow you to pull a quick 180 (thru the median if necessary).  A lot of it boils down to situational awareness.  The woman leaving the car was a horrible idea... but putting myself in that situation, I would have trapped the teenager's arm and pulled it as hard as possible to bring his head into contact with the car roof.  A quick "power window trap" of the arm may have been possible as well?  I certainly wouldn't leave a highly defensible position like the inside of the car, and as stated previously, the car is a weapon.

Here's David Wink's site:  http://fcmaa.com/

Too far for me to drive for regular classes, but I'd sure like to attend a seminar.  PhilipG is right... I found an article by Top Dog that has good things to say about David Wink:

Guys,
I just went to my fist class on Saturday and unfortunately I don’t think it’s for me. Just kidding.  I think I’m hooked already. We worked on footwork, forward triangle, reverse triangle, est. Learned the basic strikes and moving while hitting. Anyway I have a lot of thoughts on this an I will post them on the blog on Monday but I will say that as someone coming from MMA BJJ MT this was an eye opening experience to what I believe is a VERY combat effective system and I’m stoked to be heading down this path.

The Rooster

Rooster, where are you training in the DC area?

Crafty... cool!  Good to have Brian's info on the site.

Rooster, that link gives you all the info you need.  Dino is conducting "stick conditioning" every Saturday, even when Porn Star isn't teaching, so call up Dino and he can give you the details.  I just got back and can barely type, as today's workout included over 1400 stick movements (slashes, jabs, redondos, etc), forehand and backhand, left and right hands.  Oh I forgot, we used 24" black iron pipes instead of sticks.

I look forward to seeing you there.

what's in that sequence is what's known to me as sqaut thrust. a burpee, to my knowledge, DOES include a push-up and a jump to be counted as one rep.
  Francisco

Same for me... so for the purposes of DBMA: "THOU SHALT INCLUDE A PUSHUP AND A JUMP IN YOUR BURPEES"

Mwuhahahaha (evil laugh).

Rooster, welcome aboard!  Where are you training Kali in DC?

You may be interested to know that a Dog Brothers Training Group has recently formed in Manassas, VA @ Team Ruthless (aka Warrior's Forge)... here's a link to the discussion thread:

I guess I'm confused  :?

I thought that a Burpee, by definition, included a full pushup and a jump... but a quick Google Image search turns up the CrossFit definition:

So, I stand corrected.  But for the purposes of the WarriorTalk forums (if CWS says it, it must be true!), a True Burpee should include a pushup and jump.

33
I do 50 to 60 in 2 minutes. Can anyone tell me if that is a good pace?
Scott
Yikes! A burpee every two seconds?  Yeah, that's a good pace...

For comparison, this 44-year old does 100 burpees in around 7 minutes.

It's been said that burpees are what Satan does for exercise.  I concur; but there's nothing better for the cardio.

I was wondering, for all the folks out there with kids or who have regular interaction with children, what kinds of things (like the above examples) do you do to expose them to martial arts?

C-Guide Dog,

As a general rule, I usually let my kids make the first move, as I want them to find their own interests without to much influence from the old man.  That said, my daughters (8 and 6) have both expressed interest in TKD (very popular for kids), as well as Krav Maga and Escrima (obvious parental influence).  So, when they ask, I'm always happy to teach them footwork and punching mechanics, and my 8 year old likes to do standard stick drills with me (though we're still working on Heaven Six).  Then enjoy it, and it widens their perspective.

And good footwork can be applied to many facets of life, doncha think?
