Martial Arts Topics / Proper way to condition shins

I appreciate the answer. I knew I was going too far. I am kind of thick headed and get impatient, but your advice sounds like good stuff.

Thanks again

Martial Arts Topics / Proper way to condition shins
« on: March 31, 2006, 09:12:45 AM »
Does anyone have any tricks of the trade for conditioning shins? I have been using the "roll and strike" method where you roll (very hard) a stick up and down the shin and then strike the bone until basically you can't stand it.

I don't mind the pain but this method seems very slow in reducing the feeling and sensation.

I know there is no such thing as instant results but any tips would be welcome.

Martial Arts Topics / Knife vs. Gun

If the knifer is any good, he will win MOST of the time. The gap can be closed  so fast it is scary.

He doesnt have to strip the gun, just prevent it from being drawn. OR "make it flat" of his body by keeping the gunman's weaponflat on against the body (of the knifer) it makes it very hard to do much but get a nasty case of slide bite if the gun discharges. Plus at that range a heavy knife could be thrown WHILE closing the gap for a take down and do a lot of damage.

Personally I woould choose the knife.

Just curious as to how many full contact guys we have on here from Michigan. Would be nice for occasional training camps and maybe split gas money out to California, etc. Fight for fun, etc.

Even if somebody doesnt want to fight at a gathering, I wouldn't mind meeting a few people who would help take turns driving if I get busted up real bad.

I am not afraid to fly but would rather drive

Give me a howl or a shout.

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to ad that I dont train just single stick, it is just what I prefer (so far). That might change in the future it is hard to say.

When I was originally taught to fight, I was taught never to break contact with an opponent once you had closed the distance. Hold on to them, leg lock them, scissor them....anything but let them escape until the fight is over.

Now I am fighting with a weapon insteading of just training self-defense against a knife/gun, etc. and I still have the mentality "Don't let him get away until you are finished with him."

I guess I dont know if it is good or bad.....

Just curious as to how many practitioners fight with a single stick? I had one person tell me I would be looked down on if I chose to fight with a single stick even if I switch stick hands.

I am learning what is for the most part a double stick art, but I find myself wanting to have an empty hand to grab my opponent or set up a lock/takedown.  Is this just inexperience or do some "Top Dogs" feel this way?

Been very busy for a bit...many thanks to all who answered and special thanks to Crafty Dog and Pappy Dog for taking time on the phone with me.

I will be buying the series as soon as it comes out on DVD. I wear out videos waaay too fast, and at least I found an Inosanto certified stick swinger to work with until I can get the video set or make it to train with Crafty Dog.

Nick I know my sticks are gonna be awesome bro....I appreciate the personal attention that is so rare now days

Curious as to what videos (preferably DVDs) people reccomend for a matrial artist looking to train for a full contact event. I know all the Dog Brothers videos are good and I eventually plan to get them all.....but where would you start?

I need to learn basic mechanics and techniques for training. I train and teach a Russian martial art style all the time, so I have and use many bodyweight exercises. I am not worried (too much) about my physical conditioning, just learning to use sticks properly.

I can fight (some) with a staff, but the knife is emphasized over all else in our style.

I am going to need to train alone frequently, because I wont teach anything I am unsure of to a student and I dont know a lot of FMA people.

Any advice appreciated....
