This thread made me go back and see what I wrote after my first gathering, pretty similar!

"Life
Changing
Day

What an honor it was for me to step out with you folks at the Gathering.  Almost 20 years of reading about the Dog Brothers and their "events" just made my first Gathering all the more powerful and inspirational.  I was determined to meet as many of the warriors as I could and just soak it all in, and I believe I did!

The family atmosphere, the camaraderie, and the warrior spirit were EVERYWHERE yesterday.  After attending 1 gathering I cannot fathom ever missing one from now on.

After my first stick fight (Dog Cchi'med) where he destroyed me I walked off to the side and someone said "So how was it?" and I just said, "that was f'ing AWESOME, oww".  Then after the event some guy approached me to do an interview and as we were walking over to get that started I said did you pick me because all of the blood on my shirt or what? and he said nah you just have been making funny comments all day, so I said well what I lack in skill I make up for as a smart-ass and he just knodded.  That was great-

Time to go down to the garage on keep working on that sweep.

Very cool Blindside!  It was an honor to step out with you at your first Gathering!  You did awesome-  What I noticed is every year, I am more present, have better vision and am able to work (or at least try to implement) specific techniques and strategies.  My first year was like yours, brief memories of specific moments- had some tunnel vision and adrenalin dump actually.  Reminded me of the first time I pulled my gun on duty only the Gathering HURT. lol

Hope to see you next year bro!

Jeff, I would be happy to double with you instead of single, up to you...Whichever you feel you would benefit more from--

Paul and Jeff- Hit me up, I will be the tall dorky guy wearing the kilt.  My rule is I will fight anybody with anything but I really want to try some no grappling stuff.  Distancing, entering, angles and trying to apply some of the Kara-Ho Kempo principles is my goal.

The knife fights often end up in a clinch with each person killing each other about 5 times, then I get taken down and choked out. LOL  Same with stick- a couple swings a rush/clinch then hitting each other in the shins while doing a bro-hug.

All of it is fun, and growth is everywhere.

NOTE: If you fight Mongolian Dog, do not, under any circumstances, remove your mask to increase visibility.  My favorite t-shirt still has blood stains all over it.

Looking for a single, or a single and knife or a double stick- prefer a no-grappling fight this time around.

Glad that I'll be attending the gathering.  Gibby, we"re on... :-D

I need to take you out drinking the night before so you are toasted at the Gathering..lol

18
Sorry to hear that Dax, glad you will still be there though...Last year I bought some LaCrosse gloves off craigslist for $15- and the padding was soo thick it was hard to get a good grip on the stick- I also broke a finger (punching)anyway soo...

I will be wearing the KIL gloves this time.

19
I would offer to take pics between fights but I will be outside smoking...lol

20
Dang, just saw Guro Dirk on FB... Just as well I never turn down a fight and look forward to the growth that comes with it-

I might as well just fight Taimanglo then Mongolian Dog again...My health insurance at my new job starts 09/01 so I am good...

21
Dirk, I will dance with you...I have no idea what that version of the tomahawk looks/feels like but I'll step out...

Please tell me you are a big fat out of shape guy though...LOL

Suspiciously little activity on this thread...?

one of the reasons I want to go to the gathering is to try various types of footwork structures against different opponents.  arnis de mano baston galang miyahara has a rather unique footwork structure and I want to test it against a variety of opponents.  Galang Miyahara also operates best at outer ranges of combat (weapons, largo, and some medio) and I want to see how it adapts to other distance structures.  Anyway, comments on footwork and distancing are always given lots of thought.

Darrin Coe

Very cool Darrin...My goal is/was to test my training in the most "alive" situation that I could find...I have also just idolized Crafty and the others since I was like 19.  My system (Kara-Ho Kempo) teaches many weapons but not the stick(s), we do teach "club defenses" to defend against a stick armed attacker but they seem ineffective for me at least, having faced skilled arnis/escrima folks.  My focus is going to be effective low-line kicks and my iron broom sweep :)

Good luck with keeping distance at the Gathering, nearly every fight seems to go to the clinch and/or ground.

24
gibby,

the cool thing about taimanglo is he's a humble beast.  He's a ton of fun to work with and learn from.

Darrin

He was humble when we mentioned him putting someone in the hospital at dinner after the gathering...I would prefer to know him in a purely social setting, i.e. stickless- lol

25
gibby,

generally, what's holding me back is having a mortgage, a wife, and four kids.  it's tough to justify a plane ticket and a hotel, but I'm working on it.

I have actually had six in ring reality dog brothers style stickfights but the gathering is the mecca and i'll  get there eventually.  These fights were in the early 2000s and were part of nhb/mma cards.  we did three 2 minute rds.  some of the fights were underground out in the middle of field and these were truly anything goes.  broke a thumb, almost lost my left eye, it was more fun than a guy should have with a pair of sticks.  at the moment, I've got eric taimanglo in colorado springs who is gracious to give me a beating whenever I ask for it.  Yeah, I love the stickfighting.  I like to refer to it as play time for grown ups.

hang cool
Darrin

Roger that Darrin, I hear ya on the $$.  Taimanglo is a beast-- next time you fight him just tell him to quit "checking-in" on FB when he is at the gym, it is depressing...LOL

The NHB stuff is awesome, I would do it in a second- when I was younger, fighting in TJ (Tijuana) for a few bucks was the thing...

Take care and hope to see you at a gathering in the future!

26
Saint Miki- I follow the rare and arduous routine of drinking, smoking, and watching Rockford files in the months leading up to AND following the Gathering.  I have a huge stack of motorcycle tires in the garage that I beat the hell out of once in awhile though...

Folks will think I am kidding but...

Darring Coe- Welcome to the adventure!  Last year was my 1st Gathering, it was one of the greatest days of my entire life and I do NOT have 15 years of Arnis training  :-o

The intensity, comraderie, and growth from the Gathering was beyond my wildest expectations.  I am not sure what might be keeping you from attending, but I can almost guarantee that you will learn more about yourself than you expected.  Besides after 15 yrs of Arnis, aren't you curious to put it to work?

Hope to see you out there!

29
Dax-  I would be more than happy to step out with you...This is only my 2nd Gathering so I still have my amateur status intact.  LOL

Single or double-stick is fine with me...

30
Sensei Toki (C-Mighty Dog) hit it on the head.  Most fighters are more than happy to help IN ANY WAY.  I live in San Diego and my fiance and I go up the night before and stay at a pretty inexpensive hotel about 10-15 minutes from Gokor's gym- Would be happy to pick you up, shuttle you around and anything else you might need!  This offer is for any fighters coming to town.

Email or PM me if anybody needs anything-

I am not yet a Dog Brother (working on it though!) and was intrigued at the rules, equipment, sticks, everything basically--at this tournament...

What do you folks think about the tournament stick stuff?  I am not a FMA guy, only did one Gathering but I could not see myself competing in the tournament environment-- Not enough space in the ring, a spit-ton of padding, not much footwork either...Do some of you folks compete at these events?

Just wondering what the Tribe thinks..

Sifu Cordova, you got it bro!  Single double or something crazy like chains or rubber hoses?

33
JSWorth- I look forward to meeting you, the enthusiasm and upcoming chatter is something I SERIOUSLY felt last year (my 1st Gathering), apparently it is normal.  I was determined to get there no matter what also, I hung a copy of my registration form next to my medicine cabinet where I would be reminded and motivated every day.

I got, as you would say, "rolled" last year, broken finger, broken nose (again) and major bruising ALL OVER, and it was one of the greatest days of my entire life!  The pack mentality, respect, and comraderie is soo strong I could hardly believe it, even between newbies and the Dog's- afterwards we went to a restaurant and had a great time talking about how we got jacked up, or if you are Eric Tailmango, he jacked folks up! LOL.  But did not boast about it.  We were fortunate to have Guro Crafty Dog break bread with us and I was stoked, he has been one of my MA idols for almost 20 years.

I recommend setting up a couple fights in advance as Dog Rick said, it takes away a little of the stress so you are not wandering around the mat asking folks to dance.  LOL

Poi-Dog is one of the nicest folks you will find and he often saves a dance or two for newbies, he is soo good he will push you to the limit but not break you (many Dog's fit this description) - Fighting with the Dog's seems a little safer because they are used to the adrenalin rush and they do not typically lose control.

I am looking to set up a dance or two on here, and really hope I can step out with some of the best and toughest out there- my goal is to make "Dog" so I want to test myself as much as possible. (Maybe this is just a death-wish, but at least if I got to fight Kaju-Dog, he can give me medical treatment after he jacks me up)

Note to self: Wait until NEXT year to fight C-Mongolian Dog again.  I am still sore from last time! LOL
Note to self II:  During ground and pound do not remove your mask "to see better" as you will get jacked and bloody.

Thanks Crafty, sounds good to me!

I am thankful today to have had the opportunity to use our stickfighting to raise money for "Kids Kicking Cancer"  HUGE thanks goes out to all of those people who made it possible and put in their time and effort for such a cause.

I am thankful that there were no major injuries and that I believe, we all became a little bit better people because of today.

Have to admit that I am thankful that Poi-Dog didn't jack me up during our single stick and long training knife fights.. :-D

Gratitude for being able to spend the last 15 years with my ex-wife's grandpa who I loved as my own, before he succumbed last night to complications from prostate cancer and a recent stroke.

Looking forward to this weekend and taking a beating for cancer.

My Ex-wife's grandpa (who I knew and loved as my own gramps for 15 years) passed away yesterday after complications from prostate cancer (and other issues after a recent stroke).  He was a gentleman and WARRIOR and made it to the ripe age of 96!  He and I chewed the fat over strong drinks, crazy women, and played some pretty solid poker over the years.

I love and miss that man and dedicate all of my fights this weekend to him.

There is no better cause than this folks, come out and "play" or open your duct-tape wallets for this will ya?

Great day yesterday.  Thanks to everyone there, a heartfelt 'Woof' to those who should have been there but weren't because Life has a nasty habit of getting in the way.  Specific Mahalo to James, Tobias, Kaju, Doc Rick, and Darrien (sp?) for the fights yesterday, it is always an honor for me to cross sticks with such wonderful people.  Steve, you and I are on deck for 1st fight next time!

Big Aloha to the New Mexico clan, an absolute pleasure to meet you, hopefully I'll be back in the Land of Enchantment soon, and we can cross sticks/train then.  I know for a fact I'm missing some shouts to others, please forgive me, I've been hit in the head...a lot.

NoHo, y'all continue to inspire me.  Great fights from our (no-longer) cherry fighters and veteran fighters alike, I expected nothing less.  We represented Pappy's spirit well, methinks.

Aloha nui loa, Poi

Poi Dog-  It was a pleasure meeting you yesterday, you have good "ki" and I think that shows to everyone!  Please save a place on your dance card for me at the next Gathering, since you were TOTALLY DODGING me yesterday! LOL  :-D  JK!

Take care and I look forward to scoring some higher consciousness from you!
