I've had fairly good luck with Pekiti looking like pekiti under pressure, and non FMA-wise, the weapons work of ARMA also ends up looking exactly like the books when exchibited by high-level players.

The decrease in crime rate also accompanied countries that DON'T have our incarceration rate, but had similar demographic shifts in age of population at the same time, so I think attribution to incarceration rate of falling crime rates is a tad bit premature. In addition, most of our increased incarceration isn't of violent criminals- it's drug and property crimes. The notion that locking up a large segment of people who weren't violent to begin with, and then putting them in a rape box to be socialized with people who ARE violent, and then releasing them, is responsible for decreasing the amount of violence is I think suspect.

(Most western industrialized nations had a downshift in the population size of adolescent and early adult males, particularly in lower-income families that don't have the free work hours to supervise their children for as many hours a day. Unsupervised youth provide the biggest spike in violence. No one did anything to cure the crime wave, the tide of teenagers generated by the boomers just got older and had children in a more spaced out pattern than their parents did)

a) Freddie Roach on GSP:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpkjn8Wufz8&feature=player_embedded

b) Machida vs. Jackson:  Hard to see how the judges came to that decision!

c) Last night on the TUF finale event, Joe Rogan had a riff on how bad decsions are getting  to start to thing that MMA is starting to get corrupt; he went on to say that it is because the Nevada Athletic Commission, which basically is boxing people, is putting clueless morons judging UFC fights.  I was surprised at how candid his comments were.

d) Exciting finale to the TUF event.  I really like that kid who won (name slips my mind at the moment) but he sure took too many strong hits in the first round.  IMHO shots like those have a cumulative effect.  He really needs to clean up his standing striking game.

Jonathan Brookins. You'd think he would have learned that lesson after fighting Jose Aldo(and doing suprising well before getting knocked out)

Lyoto almost ended the fight 4 times. Rampage was never close to doing so even once. I don't see giving him the decision off of one takedown and two uppercuts.

Unlikely, but I'll be in Tuscaloosa Alabama for two weeks starting the 23rd until dec 4th. Anyone out there?

a) A snatch is from hanging to shoulder or overhead?

b) Are you saying you have 15 seconds to do 7 reps and then 15 seconds to rest?

the snatch is executed as selfcritical described, a swing back from the 3 pt postition to full overhead lockout (bell and shoulder in same line)

most folks start at 6, some at 7, it depends on the cadence test

yep, you work on a 15:15 work rest ratio for as many rounds as you can manage with good form while maintaining the cadence

and as selfcritical stipulates, you accelerate the bell on the down swing (it weighs up to 4 times more as you pull it out of the hole because of this, overspeed eccentric)

as to how long it took to work up to this

I am an RKC, so I had a good deal of proficiency in the snatch before I started, but it took about 3 mos total to hit the first 80 sets at 6 per, about 3 wks later it was 80 at 7, then about 1 mos later 80 at 8, I then continued on the protocol as it is designed to go for 36 sets of 20 on the 36:36 work rest ratio

I have also done this with single and double 16kg push press for 6/7/8 reps per

it can be brutal, but gratifying

the conditioning you get for the grip, legs, arms, shoulders and explosive power in the legs and the core stabilization work are all big hits in my book

lots of bang for your buck

did it in the rain again this weekend, and that is a whole other animal ;)

I've done the 15:15 twice. Usually takes me about 4 weeks. My issue is I went to this immediately after having done tons of HIIT work, and I really didn't have a very strong Aerobic base. I've cut back on this and am specifically working on cardiac output work for a while, and will get back to VWC as soon as I've lowered my RHR some more.

A hardstyle kettlebell snatch is from fully loaded position (bell swung behind you) to fully locked out (the bell in the same position it would be at the top of a military press, where it must hang motionless for a moment). On the way down you will actively spike the weight so that it swings back into the "hike" position before repeating.

The cadence is based on dividing up your max snatches over a minute. It's basically dipping just above anerobic threshold and then recovering multiple times. It's an escalating volume protocol, so you would start with whatever percentage of 80 sets you can comfortably finish and then adding sets each session

just finished 80 sets of vo2 snatches with a 16kg bell at 7 reps per set on the 15:15 protocol

grip, hip drive, and lung capacity all get taxed
though, since I have done this protocol a few times now, 80 sets is not that big of a stretch any more
barely get out of breath, not bragging, just saying that you adapt to whatever you do and if you minimize the stress levels, you adapt faster

40 minutes tops, 15 sq feet of space with enough overhead room for the weight at full lock out, and a moderate weight  and you are in business

if anyone is interested in the protocol I can give you the basics pretty quickly

once a week has been my pattern lately, with as much stick work and knife action as I can fit into my schedule

How long did it take you to work up to that? Also, did you get any HR measurements?

Ideas on "strafing" with the zirconia.

In the event of wanting to get back out upon completing a zirconia combo ("false jab" to cross or hook, perhaps finishing with a lead hook while drifting to the side), what method of restablishing range has worked best for you and students in sparring? My inclination is to think that a retreat along the back 45 degree angle of the triangle (toward my rear foot) would be sensible, but this might require onlya  little adjustment.

My understanding is the material is really meant to support a "crash" but, I've found myself thinking often "I'm considerably faster than this person, and they have clinch skills", so this is something I'm making an effort to play around with in a boxing environment.

As far as I can  tell, it's an over-application of a test from z-health for determining if your CNS is showing signs of overtraining. A noteable weakness I think is that the approach doesn't really address any kind of metabolic/energy system work.

In particular, you'll note that those weren't Greco throws that Jones used to toss the olympic-caliber vera.

And Jones doesn't have a judo coach.

He watched some videos on judo, and went to some public classes at cornell.

And then just did it.

Kind of fits my experience too. Everyone I know who was actually attacked with a knife came from an escalated arguement.  By contrast, when I was mugged with a knife i felt at no point like I was in danger. This is probably why I associate really violent knife attacks with "status-based" violence rather than pure predatory behavior.

Josh is probably the best pure athlete other than GSP at welterweight, and the most decorated wrestler. It was a big deal when he went on TUF instead of trying out for the olympics.

Josh doesn't always demonstrate this, because he's started to get heavy hands, and only spends about %10 of his training on wrestling now. I believe that was a bit of a tactical error going into the GSP fight.

I wouldn't begrudge a law that made it more difficult to carry a knife that is very easily palm-concealed. I just want a safe tool I can open with one hand that sufficiently obvious that I'll have a hard time walking up to someone when it's in my hand. I've never had my hands on an actual switchblade, so I don't know if this is a valid concern.

I wouldn't freak out if they banned the import of those crazy indonesian finger-knives either(where you hold the ball in your palm and the blade traces along your index finger). I could be persuaded otherwise, most likely.

There was very little linked in the original article- although the writer states that all one-handed folders would be banned, about an hour of tooling around through the Customs pubically available information only yielded to me that

a) spring-assist would be effected
b) this would only effect import and not carry

The writer may have materials I am not privy to, but neither I nor any friends were able to find them.

Will sex be a limiting factor here? The person i'm trying to convince to send in a resume is a NAGA champ, has Muay Thai fights against Kaitlin Young, and is an ARMA scholar- she will beat %99 of people in her weight class senseless, of either gender.

Will there be a significant training component to the show? I know a few high-level WMA players, and while they don't have stick experience, are very handy with a variety of western weapons. The german material stresses commonality of motion as well, so given a short acclimation time I feel confident that an ARMA scholar or similar could perform under pressure here.

My experience is limited to Sentikiros(spelling?) players from close by, whom use a lot of Baintawak in their system. Most of what i've seen is less like "attacking" the incoming stick, and more like "cushioning" or "catching" the incoming attack by bracing it against ones body. The motions I see them use should be equally applicable with more aggressive footwork, in the style of a pekiti four-wall crashing motion(when I was working the balintawak drills in a seminar enviroment, i had to correct myself often, because my instinct in drills is always to try to close the gap).

Although his use was a little bit different than displayed in for example Kali Tudo(or most filipino empty hand stuff i've done) due to his different tools. Cung would often allow his opponent to get their lead foot outside of his and begin spiraling(what I would normally think of as a dominant angle for his opponent), but his use of sidekick as a stop-hit allowed him to invert the strategy at times.

Anderson Silva utilizes what I would consider a very similar understanding of angles, but with tools i'm more familiar with.
