Martial Arts Topics / Stick Materials Question
« on: January 24, 2006, 09:47:58 AM »
Woof Michael!

The following of course is my opinion alone of course.  I would prefer training with rattan over ironwood for the simple matter that I would much rather get hit by rattan than with ironwood.  As the particular training regimen I and those I have trained with includes actual contact, we tend to appreciate the "give" that a flexible wood like rattan has when receiving a strike in training.

Now it is likely that there are other fighters here with a tougher skin than I and a bit braver, their opinion may be more in favor of ironwood.

A very informative article indeed.  And as is evident in the attached quote, it is very clear the author has a clear view of what we are all about.

The Dog Brothers have generated tremendous interest in FMA walking a tightrope between gladiatorial spectacle, laboratory of FMA techniques, a warrior rite of passage, and true martial arts brotherhood

Hello Yolanda!

Yes, we are not too far apart.  My wife and I moved here to Grand Rapids from Palm Springs, CA last spring.  Currently, I'm not training with any school at the moment; pretty much just drills, strength and endurance training in my backyard.  I am on the look out for new training partners so if you or anyone you know would like to train, drop me an e-mail at raff1966@yahoo.com.  I'll send you a quick note so you'll have the e-mail address.

Woof and Greetings Yolonda!

You will find alot of Arnis/Kali/Escrima behind the fighting here.  But you will also see elements of other combat systems worked in as well.  Guro Crafty, Top Dog, Salty Dog and many others here have done an amazing job over the years of melding the best aspects of many of these arts into what you will see in the videos.  I was introduced to the dogbrothers several years ago while in CA and will conitnue to learn all I can from them even now that I am in MI.  Like you, I do have some background in Kung Fu (mostly 8-step Praying Mantis and some Jun Fan) as well as many other systems from around the world (I have been at it since 8 years old).  I do have to say that thus far, my experiences with the Dogbrothers have been the most enlightening and exciting.

Guro Marc, I forgot to mention I'm an engineer by day, at a software company, where I pride myself on being a "nerd" (read: academic). And when my coworkers hear of my interest in stickfighting (or martial arts), they think I'm crazy or violent.

LOL..  i get that alot at work too, but then I do work as a Civil Engineer in the Land Development/Construction industry.

Hey Dennis!

We're now in West Michigan (near Grand Rapids).  Due to the move and the fact that our first kid is due in a matter of weeks, we weren't able to make it to the summer Gathering   :(    Which only gives me more time to train for the Winter one.  *grins*

Ahh.. then if it's a desert fortress you are after, the thing to do is go to Palm Springs (I no longer live there so you are free to use my zombie plan here) and take over the Aerial Tramway.  Ride the thing to the Mountain Station up top and then shut it down.  Nothing will be able to climb up the sheer cliffs of the mountain from the desert below and the station has a fully stocked resturant and amentities.

OK, time to build our fortresses out in the Northern wilderness and stock up on ammo and MRE's.  This marks the start of the zombie attacks!  Good thing I have several copies of the Zombie Survival Guide in my personal library.

Greetings,

I have had Lasik surgery.  My proceedure was done about 6 months before my first participation in the Gatherings.  I cannot say enough good things about it.  If your doctor is sure you are a good candidate for Lasik I would highly recomend it.  You can still continue sparring and stickfighting, but make sure to wait the appropriate time period for the healing to take place.  Your doctor can give you the best advice as to how long that should be.
