This was an amazing seminar! I feel like I was able to fine tune and correct material that was already familiar, and the new block of material that was introduced to us was incredible. Lots of stuff to digest and work on in the coming months.

Thank you Guro Crafty for your teaching, your guidance, and your support.

Best,

Greg

Either way though I think the next time I'm sparring I'm going to ask my friend to try to emulate your typical street thug attack and see how I react to it. I figure if I ever have to defend myself that is the most likely scenario and so that's the one for which I want to be prepared.

This is a great idea! Another scenario you may find useful is to get together with two or three training partners. Everyone gears up, and the fight starts with you walking past one of them. Then one (or more - you won't know) will move into an unprovoked attack. The attack can (and should) look different each time your run the scenario - it could begin with words and escalate to shoving and fighting, it could begin with an innocent question ("do you have the time?") and then move into the attack.

The key is that you don't know in advance how many people you will be dealing with (this is something they will work out among themselves and you will not be part of the conversation). It could be an attack by one person, that escalates into a two on one or three on one....or it could just stay one on one...or it could be multiple attackers versus you from the start. Also, some of them may be carrying knives or other weapons. Again - you won't know.

One important thing to work out in advance is that everyone is clear what you are fighting for, and when the drill ends. When my teacher and I train drills like this, we fight to get away. The drill ends when the fighter either gets away, clearly can't get away, or is "killed."

Train hard and be safe,

Greg

Martial Arts Topics / Re: Anyone have any good Circuit Ideas for home
« on: October 22, 2014, 12:41:31 PM »
I thought I would bring this topic back to the top. About 50% of my training is done at home, generally in 45min - 1hr increments. Thus my goal is always to get an intense workout in as short of a period of time as possible.

My two favorite (and most often used) pieces of home equipment are a hanging tire (to hit with a stick) and a home-made T-Bar (to swing). For those interested in making their own T-Bar (which mimics the motion of a kettlebell swing) you can find instructions here: http://www.davedraper.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php?n=PmWiki.T-Handle Check out Master Ross's embedded link for a tutorial/ demo. One addition suggested by Master Ross which I second is to add a hose clamp to keep the weights from sliding up and down the bar.

As for circuits, here is a circuit I like. You will need an interval timer set for 1 minute rounds/ 15 second rests. Do each exercise for 1 minute, then take 15 seconds to transition to the next one.

1 Round =

1. Burpees
2. Pushups
3. T-Bar swings
4. Ab wheel roll outs
5. Power shots to the tire w/ krabi sticks

Rest for 1-2 minutes between rounds. I usually go for 5 - 6 rounds per workout.

Greg

This article posits that strengthening the neck muscles may help prevent concussions: http://fightmedicine.net/mma-injuries/mma-neck-strengthening-exercises-to-prevent-concussions

Woof, everyone!

I just wanted to say thanks to all who participated in this year's Open Gathering.  I was  incredibly inspired by the "heart, mind, and balls" displayed by all who fought. Although I was not happy with my own performance during my stickfight (and a hard shot to my thumb effectively ended my ability to take more fights), I feel like I gained a great deal of insight into my own weaknesses and areas I need to work on.

A special thank you to Guro Beowulf and Darren (C-? Dog) for their fights with me. Gentlemen, it was humbling, inspiring, and motivating to train with you.

And of course, thanks and respect to Guro Crafty, whose vision and guidance brought us all together.

I wish everyone continued growth in their training, and I look forward to seeing and crossing sticks with you next year.

Best,

Greg

Greg, I would be up for a staff fight, would have to see if I can borrow one while I am there so.

Woof,
Dog Dirk

Woof, Dog Dirk!

I already have a staff fight lined up with Eric Taimanglo, so if you don't mind, let's play this one by ear. If I am feeling too beaten up to take a second staff fight, you are welcome to borrow my staff and find someone to play with.

Looking forward to meeting you on Sunday!

Greg

Woof woof, everyone!

I am looking forward to meeting everyone and being a part of next week's Gathering.

Paul Trout and Seeing Eye Dog, I would be honored to cross sticks with you. The three of you were suggested to me by my friend and teacher, Terry C-Shadow Dog. I am looking to line up a stick fight fight, and a staff fight.

Let me know what you think!

Best,

Greg
