I apologize for my late response.  Great fight on your first gathering!  If you decide to fight at the next gathering (June 2006) or any thereafter or if you are in Los Angeles at anytime you are free we can express ourselves.  Let me know if there is a specific weaponry you had in mind you want to try I am open.  Keep up the good work.

Hello,

Great suggestions sir and thanks for your input.  I personally train with simplicity myself.  I spend about 3x/week with weights/cardio with different intensities and intervals mixed in...60% would go to hi cardio interval training (areobic and anaerobic)...40% to resistence training (push ups, pull ups, sit ups) and some weight training for strenghtand maintanence...I'll spend at least an hour to martial skills (bag work, tire work, djurus, weapons) including martial arts class time.

Hello,

I always admire people who train hard to improve the human condition especially when it comes down to martial arts.  At 43 years old, I plan to train as long as I my body will allow it and hopefully participate at more Gatherings.  My question is this similar to "periodization" as some trainer's would say?

I have come across some really good articles by Clarence Bass (www.cbass.com) and I thought it had some similarities to your experience.

Peace,

Glenn

Hello Guro Crafty,

You got one of the co-authors is Mr. Jerry Robinson, and the other co-author is Mr. Joseph Horrigan, DC  www.softtissuecenter.com.  Although I have not read their book I know it is of great value for anyone and any serious athlete and anyone who may have had a work injury in the past or present involving sholder injury especially the rotator cuuff of which he is an expert.

I have visited their office in Century City and Mr Horrigan can give you some of the best diagnosis for almost anytype of soft tissue ailment.  They are really experts in their field and they can remove adhesions in your muscle groups by deep tissue manipulation almost like shiatsu style and Hilot ( which I now guru Sam Tendencia is an expert).   It may take a few sessions for them to work on that injured area and then they prescribe you specific do's and don't excerises that will strenghten the RTC which you will probably have to do for the rest of your martial art years.

I'm sure the 7 minute shoulder workout will give you some specific weight training for that muscle group.

I excercise both of my  shoulders at 2-3 times a week to maintain stability and prevent injury.  I have not experienced any serious RTC injury since I have been doing Mr. Horrigan's program.

Peace,

Glenn

Thanks for the info.  Just got reading some info on the "donga", looks like very exciting event there and one must be highly prepared for these challenges.

Hello fellow martial artists,

Has any fighter offered to fight anyone with no armor in any of the DB gatherings?  If so, what was the outcome?  Would the council of Elders approve of it? Would there be any legal paperwork involve between the fighters if either would get killed?

Peace,

Glenn

Dear fellow martial artistis and DB tribe,

First of all I would like to thank Mr. Strickgrappler for posting those great articles on staff arts really great stuff!
I personally enjoy training with this versatile weapon.  When one has the proper basic understanding of its use on all ranges of combat one can defend his or herself at any time.

I thought the article on the Art of Malayu Sibat by Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje Jr. is really interesting.   I found it to be informative and really appreciate the weapon from its origin and how it is used in that environment.   Are there any elements or expressions of this art applied by Guru Marc Denny in the staff video?  Would there be any future seminars offerred of this unique art?

I hope they are not too much too ask.  I am basically new to this.  I am just a beginner and love to learn about other cultures from around the world and appreciate where these arts originated and its environmental applications and its use in combat.

Peace,

Glenn

Martial Arts Topics / Cass Magda Silat/Kali Summer Camp
« on: July 26, 2005, 05:52:10 PM »
Hello martial artisits and DB tribe,

I just recently attended and participated at this year's Summer Camp at The Magda Institue.  The material and training was awesome as usual.  Sifu Cass Magda shared some Philippine and Indonesian martial  culture and history, applications of djurus on the cross using penchar and applications to multiple attackers at various angles of attack (very cool stuff for any levels), there were blade to blade training and disarms, stick and dagger training, cool sarong defense techniques, more Buka Jalan Silat training and applications.  Sifu Ted Wong presented to us some of his JKD training from Sifu Bruce Lee ( This man has never aged and still moves like Bruce!) We also had the opportunity to train with Sifu Tim Tackett and sifu Bob Bremmer ( an original Bruce Lee backyard student) their presence  was awesome!
We had the opportunity to see some old footages of some of the Kali/Escrima teachers like Guru Johnhy Lacoste and Guru Dan Inosanto training together with stick and blade in a park somewhere in Stockton,Calif. with "Rocky" music playing in the background.  Guru Lacoste peformed his version of carenza. There footages of guru Ben Largusa and his students demonstrating and a brief appearance of Mr. Floro Villabrile demonstrating what appeared to be "numerada".  There were other footages of old escrima men training with sticks and moving so well with flow.  To our surprise we saw Sifu Cass Magda at 19 years old
demonstrating a "fan" drill against a knife attack coming at various angles of attack with Sifu Dan Inosanto  feeding the attacks ( most impresseive site!)   There were also some footages of silat practioners training in a house somewhere in West Java.  There footages of Kulintang players playing kulintang music in the Southern Philippines while a young kid demonstrating kali with sticks. Very cool stuff!
What really impressed me the most was these filipino men in their 80's and 90's like Manong Leo Giron demonstrating largo mano with Sifu  Dan Inosanto was truly amazing.  Having seen these great men move so well with flow and grace is so awesome.  I hope these old footages of these great men will be available for others to see someday so others will have more understanding and appreciation of Philippine and Indonesion martial arts and culture.

Peace,

Glenn
