Woof, Guro.  I think the dates are 19-20, yes?  Alas, I can't break away for the seminar as I thought I would be able to earlier in the year.  Enjoy!

153
I am glad I did my part for thread coherence.  Sorry about that, GD!  I hope your event goes well!

And that book looks, well, "useful."

Woof Guide Dog...
I wish I lived closer, for I would finally be able to answer that burning question that was asked of me by a student a few years ago after his second lesson.  He didn't come back after I couldn't assure him that FMA was the best system for surviving the ZA.  I wish I was joking.  Good luck, and have fun!

Martial Arts Topics / Steven Seagal keeps America safe!!!!!!!

Um...

Steven Seagal hired to control U.S.-Mexico border
Steven Seagal has once again been hired to serve and protect, except it doesn't sound like there will be any reality show cameras following him around this time.

The "Above the Law" actor was sworn in this week as a deputy with the sheriff's office in Hudspeth County, Texas. The 59-year-old, who's no stranger to law enforcement and is also trained in Aikido, will help control the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the San Antonio Express.

The paper reports that Seagal reached out to the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office himself about two months ago, seeking employment. Says Sheriff Arvin West, "Seagal is not in this for celebrity or publicity. He's like the rest of us that live down here; he has a sincere passion for his country and he wants to do more to help."

Although cameras captured Seagal's work as a reserve deputy with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana for A&E's "Steven Seagal: Lawman," it doesn't appear his full-time work with Hudspeth County's department will eventually serve as fodder for TV.

The San Antonio Express reports that a spokesman for the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office says Seagal's employment with them isn't part of the A&E show. (Production was also halted on "Steven Seagal: Lawman" in 2010 when a former model alleged that Seagal used her as a "sex toy" after she was hired to be his assistant.)

"The television aspect of what we're doing here is the last priority," the spokesman said. "The man has a pure motive in doing this. He knows what we're up against and wants to help."

Seagal is scheduled to start his new gig early next year. While it's unknown if he'll be paid, the spokesman for the sheriff's department says deputies are typically paid about $15 an hour.

He also was the GM of Joe San-do.  Really.

Forgive me if this is not the proper place for this, but wasn't this the guy who trained Kimo and then danced in the octagon with him when Royce Gracie decided not to continue after his fight with Kimo in UFC III?

I also seem to remember this guy being involved in a UFC fight before groin shots were illegal during which someone was repeatedly punched in the groin. I can't remember if this guy was on the receiving end or the giving end, so to speak.

This is good news.  Props to Kaju and Dog Rick in setting him up on site.

A WOOF to all the fighters yesterday.  The fights were awesome, and it was a real pleasure to commune with all of you.  A special thanks to Rick, Guide Dog and Poi Dog for the fights, Dog Terry for helping me prepare, and the Crafty Dog for continuing to plan the events.  I can't thank you all enough for a truly transformative experience.

That was an awesome video, Guide Dog.  Good luck and continued well wishes for the new school.  Keep us posted!

My condolences for your loss.  My heart goes out to you and yours.

"During dinner one night at Dog Brothers camp, a guy asked about injuries and how we rebound from them and why we fight. Crafty turned towards me and said "ask Toki, he is healing from an injury, he Never turns down a fight and will fight men a foot taller and 100 lbs heavier..ask him why he fights". As I started to explain and somewhat intellectually ramble..what I should have said is that ..I couldn't imagine the pain of simply watching my fellow Dog Brothers fight without me. I think that pain is deeper then any physical pain that I endure. It is also the motivation to heal for the next Gathering.

Woof!!!"

C-Mighty Dog, your explanation about your motivation was amongst my favorite memories of the Training Camp.  I thought you discussed the sense of remaing true to self and to your fellow warriors in a way that really connected with me, and I suspect many others who sat at the table with you.

Do you have an outline for the material that will be covered each day in case a student and I are limited to either Saturday or Sunday ?

Thank you

I LOVE the idea of a syllabus!

Forgive my ignorance please: is there a link to pay for this online?  Or do we pay upon arrival?

Some additional points and clarifications stemming from Guro's post:

1. I did not mean to suggest that you should not learn more techniques.  You may find others that work for you when you deepen your study.  To find those, it is necessary to study widely.

2.  That said, there are limits that you can set.  I am not a high kicker.  This makes the study of TKD unnecessary for me.

3.  A musician friend of mine says (and he may take it from elsewhere): Practice doesn't make perfect.  Perfect practice makes perfect.

Also, GM's point about mastering the fine of verbal deescalation is an excellent one.

176
I had trained elsewhere for three or four years before I saw a Guro Crafty seminar.  I was hooked on DBMA, not just the mindset, by the first break in the seminar.  I learned more about application of all the techniques I knew in two hours than I had in all the time I spent in martial arts.  I still train in the school where I started, but my training took on a whole new purpose when I trained with the Crafty one for the first time.

177
I think the answer to this might depend on the individual's mission.  Martial artists might need to learn many new things, so they can then teach their students or to progress to the next belt.  Those interested primarily in self defense might want to "own" a dozen or so techniques.  This is the approach taken by Kelly McCann and others in self defense (or "self offense" as KM calls it).  And in DBMA, while there are numerous techniques, the importance of consistence across curriculum can not be discounted... which means that we can "own" many techniques due to their similar attributes.

I am not supporting him being fired.  Let me say, however, that you can reverse your earlier question.  How do you, as a Rice administrator, explain a campus shooter and being a man short at the time?

I have heard from people in the know that retired police officers make bad body guards because their attention can be drawn away from their protectorate by situations such as arguments, fights, and other real or simulated issues.  The desire to help is not a bad thing, but situations can dictate the type of help given.  In this case, I think he was morally correct to enter the fight.  However, JDN is right about the hole in the Rice security due to his departure.

I think this is a good place this article.  It deals with the potential that teens are increasingly, and randomly attacking, for fun... without provocation or identifiable reason.

Karsk

By golly, that clip looks familiar!!!!

"d) Recently I have developed what I call "the Rabid Blast".  Like the WC/JF and the JKD Straight Blasts it seeks to impose neurological overload by punching three strikes per step (well two strikes and a sector framing strike to be specific  ).  Like the JKD SB and the Boxing Blast it seeks to impose strong forward pressure, though the footwork prefers to zig zag ("sawtooth" in our terminology) unless the opponent is so on his heels that a straight line is required to keep up with him.  Like the Boxing Blast is seeks to keep the jaw protected; though in my opinion it does so to a greater degree.  Ideally weave and shoot counters are partially dealt with by using the angle created by the sawtooth footwork, often in conjunction with what we call a "silat gator roll".  Because of our concerns about striking the skull with our fists, the strikes are heel palm.  The nature of the strikes overlaps with old school boxing, but is neither vertical fist nor boxing.
The chambers from which they initiate are different (think the double stick chamber we call the Arf-arful Dodger) and rhythmically they are a bit different too;  I may be mistaken but at the moment I think the rhythm is in 6/8."

I look forward to seeing more of this in the future.

U.S. Marshal Dies of Shooting Injuries

Wednesday, March 09 2011

(St. Louis, MO) -- A United States Marshal involved in a shoot-out in St. Louis Wednesday, died from his injuries last night.
Another marshal was wounded in the incident as was a St. Louis police officer.

The suspect also died after being shot by police during the standoff.

Tuesday morning, Marshals went to the door of a 36 year old man to serve a drug warrant.
Officers say the man opened fire.

One marshal was shot and critically wounded.  He later died.  He is now identified as Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry.

The other marshal, Theodore Abegg, is in fair condition. The police officer has minor injuries.

Three children inside the house were taken to a neighbor's home before the shooting started.

Martial Arts Topics / Re: WHERE IS THE FOOTWORK!?!
« on: December 02, 2010, 07:48:32 PM »
I am a bigger fighter than most, and my footwork is still evolving.  That said, I would second what Guro says above.  I would also make a point training the footwork from any number of the DVDs that are on the website, including the FW DVD from RCSF series 1 and the Combining Stick and Footwork from series 2.  And repeat.  And repeat again.  Perfect practice makes perfect.

Does he have an athletic background?  If so, use the footwork he has developed in his prior experiences help him.  I wrestled and played OLine.  That footwork has helped me.  I would also encourage him to develop a game based on his assets.  Size does matter.  Trying to make him move like a small man will only serve to frustrate both of you, and probably harm him more than help him.

My 2cents.
