Woof Crafty, Sorry I got a little carried away there. It sounded like a good idea at the time!  I guess you just have to be real and  put it out there for better or for worse. Interesting idea.  Kind of borrowing from monster garage and also remanisent of the  Raw Gym warehouse doors. Maybe one could utilize the existing warehouse doors to achieve the previous mentioned idea. Possibly a stageing tent of sorts just outside the door? That way you could create a dark non defined background when fighters enter through the doors instead of cars in parking lot etc. How about some colored lights in the stageing area to give it a mood. Sort of like the rapidly moveing colored lights during the stageing of the old U.F.C. fights 2+3. or strobe lights.  What is O/P trying to achieve exactly. Are they looking to keep a modest real feel to this or maybe a more smoke and mirrors effect? (for lack of a better term)   I think the previous idea is a winner!  IMHO

Woof all,  This June during the warm up fights,  I am going to introduce a swing knife which is  a wood dowel (representing a knife) connected to a  teather that wraps around the wrist and swings out like a nunchaku. It should be fun.     Also: I have some concerns about the knife fighting warm up's. It seems to me that many of the fighters are doing alot of crashing and  kicking during these "warm up fights" Although many people have different ideas of how a real knife fight scenario unfolds, my concern is that if I sustain an injury that keeps me from participating in a day of stick fighting, I will be really bummed. (very disapointed)  I think that these gatherings have atracted many serious knife fighters with something to prove which is a great thing except for the fact that the knife fights here are used as a warm up exercise before a day of hardcore stick fighting. I am sure I can find someone to knife fight with who has the same concerns as myself.   P.S.  I am also looking for someone to fight me against my single/double nunchaku. Size and weight not a concern to me.  I am 47 yr's old 6'5" 225 lbs. The nunchaku I use are rattan an very light weight so you can take a shot and not wory so much about serious injury. Anyone interested please reply on "June Gathering Thread" on this site. Thanks.  TS

Here is a little gem of a movie you do'nt want to miss. Back in the late 70's in Los Angeles, this movie use to pop up from time to time on SELECT Cable TV on the "MIDNIGHT HORROR" show. One of my favorites for sure!.  I think George Lucas borrowed some music from this movie for Star Wars... Or was it the other way around?  Just the tempo was slower.  Also: On the subject of boundaries.  I think that boundary lines made up of heavy punching bags and/or rolled up  mats placed (end to end) would work well.  Placed in a manner that would trip up the fighters and also provide a safe soft landing would be great. It also provides a good buffer zone free of unknown objects such as glass bottles and the like. It would also  give the spectators some measure of protection against fighters crashing into them. Even though it is understood that spectators enter at their own risk, I am sure we would all feel terrible if someone were to become seriously injured be it a fighter or spectator/children.      :?

Woof all,  Walls are good as long as your not the one running into them. lol.  It also keeps a higher number of spectators out of harms way. Also: Robertlk808,   I think El Cahone is about 2 hours south of Glendale. Depending on the amount of traffic it could take much longer. Welcome Wado King, I first heard of the Dog Brothers in the early 90's from magazine ad's. I finaly bought my first video in "95 (stick vs other weapons) and realized that I had to do this. My first gathering was in 1996. That day everything changed. I finaly found the coolest thing in my martial arts journey and it remains so to this day.

Hey Marc,  I did a little searching and found this. Thought you might be interested.    http://www.origprod.com/theshows.htm

It sounds like there will be many fighters this time around. You may need to go to 90 second rounds due to time restraints. lol  BTW thank you for offering to cater to my weaknesses so I can play.     (much appreciated)  Im not sure where I came up with the term "90 second rounds" althogh that was 8 years ago or more. Even so,  the term was used loosly and was not a rule. I think it applied to the slower moving fights just to keep things moving along.  If a fight is brewing and the crowd is getting into it      it will reach it's natural conclusion even if it takes 10 minutes (Topdog vs Earve White) and others. Thats one of the many things that make these gatherings so special. This one may turn out to be the most special of all. I have not trained in years so it should be interesting if not laughable.  I have just begun training   my 5 yr old daughter so that has been my vehicle for my recent limited activity for the last couple of months. I'm thinking it's like rideing a bike. We will see !

227
Woof Marc, I went to see my doctor  and he gave me pills to ease the pain in my leg if needed. It is actualy feeling better  today on it's own so thats a good sign. Unfortunitly he seemed to be more concerned about my lungs than my leg. Kind of sounds like one of your stories from stick and footwork video. He has me on Inhalers and did x-rays.(waiting for results)  I think stamina is going to be a factor for me this time around.  The good thing is that 90 second rounds means this old fart can still come out and play.

228
WOOF! Marc,  My first gathering was the "Quatro de Mayo" 1996. I met my wife that same night for the first time at point Magoue beach. Even though we did'nt start dateing until two years later this day truely holds special meaning. My wife just reminded me that it is also the same day I bought my new car last year.I guess it is safe to say that good things happen to me on this day.  I'm getting kind of old now for fighting although I must say that the pre fight buzz this year is makeing me feel that I may have  a few more good fights left in me. I am having bad left leg pains (seeing my doctor monday)  In either case it should'nt  slow me down to much. If I am able I will probably be there ( wherever that is ). Glendale sounds good to me and I hope that works out.  I Look forward to seeing you and a great day of stick fighting. P.S.  Sending registration form soon. Thank's

Gatherings at the park again would be most excellent.   Happy Quatro de Mayo.

At my second gathering I remember trying early in the day to find someone to fight against my nunchuk's. I wasn't having much luck.  As the day went on I had a stickfight or two. Still no takers with the chuk,s. Next thing I hear is Marc getting ready to call it a day.  I was so desperate for a fight I interupted Marc (no disrespect was intended) and loudly challenged anyone who was willing , to a fight as I swung my nunchaku over my head and  walked down the row of fighters to make it clear what I was talking about.. There was a brief pause 5 seconds maybe  and then I heard a familiar voice call out" Ill fight you " It was TOP DOG.     I thought to myself, "Now I did it.. Me and my big mouth". I think Pappydog said it best when he said "It's like jumping out of an airplane when parachuting. Once you jump, there is no turning back". And yes, Top Dog was merciful.       Much respect to all the fighters.

I propose that we all submit any real fight footage to this thread and use it to experiance real life situations and better train and/or  prepare our selfes. Be it a gunfight, knife or edged weapons, improvised or other. I know I started this thread with a backyard brawl( not the real thing but very close) But I feel we can use that brawl as a guage for realism. What I am saying is try  to submit fights with at least or more intencity as the back yard nunchaku fight.  I think it would make a great tool for learning. Just a thought. I have experianced a few real knife fights in my time and I can tell you things happen deathly quick. One time we were playing pool and a fight broke out right next to me. I saw the whole thing or at least I thought I did, except for the goose down (jacket) feathers floating around. It did not take long to figure out there was a knife involved. I never did see the knife but I saw the bloody mess it left behind. Another knife fight I wittnessed, the guy fended off the knife wielding man with a stick he found on the ground. I was involved in a fight were a knife was involved back in junior high school. Ah yes those were the good old days when kids from "Compton" were bussed in to the San Fernando valley with all us white boys. That was my first incounter with crips and bloods. I must say it was educational. If I could, I would shoot the stupid f**k that came up with that briliant idea.   Tom

It is a good idea to wear some kind of a tough glove when fighting against an opponent wearing a fencing mask. A tough glove, batting gloves, ski gloves and the like do not offer much if any protection against sticks impact, but it will protect your hand from being cheese grated by the fencing mask.  JMHO    Tom

Woof, ryungruhn.  It sounds like a cattle prod works well and is not as severe as some stun guns but still very effective.  I was thinking the lower voltage of a cattle prod may not be as effective through some clothing were as most stun guns claim to work through most clothing. I guess sparring with less or thinner clothing would remedy that possible problem. Q,  What voltage is your cattle prod. The stun gun I recomended delivers  5000, volts. P.S. Always wear eye protection.    Tom

Tom,

Are you checking out photo 137 (of 174)  in the enlarged version ?
On the unenlarged version, I can't see the spatter, either.  Though,
the spatter is definitely there.  I have the original photos, so it's
easier for me to identify the spatter, which is definitely not marks on the
rolling door wall behind the competitors.

Cool !

My monitor has not been very clear lately. I guess it is time to get a new one. After looking at other photos and comparing the same area on the door (back ground) I see and am convinced that indeed this must be blood splatter. I did not doubt you, I just had a hard time seeing it clearly on my soon to be replaced monitor. P.S. Thanks for the assist Pretty Kitty.   Tom

I forgot to mention that this partcular stungun is charged an entire 5'' inches from the tip down toward the base so it is excelent for using slashing as well as thrusting techniques. I would also mention that a stun gun has different effects on the human body depending on the duration of contact. Quick contact will  not produce an actual KNOCK OUT in fact if you are hit it will make you very aware of that fact from the shock and possible temporary disorientation. If you want to use slashing techniques with this stun gun then padding the top  5''inches is not an option.

Martial Arts Topics / stun guns
« on: July 14, 2005, 10:58:30 AM »
Hey ryangruhn,  First of all the best thing to do is pad the stungun with  to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick dence foam padding wraped with black electrical tape. This will help to protect it from impact damage. For a picture of a suitable stun gun go to "GOOGLE- IMAGES" and type in the  words          "stun guns"  If you do not use the correct spaceing and lower case letters you will not end up on the correct page. Once you get there check out the stungun on the second row down and the third picture from the right. This picture shows a variety of stun guns marked A,B,C,and"D". Stungun  marked "D" is the one that I suggest using. It is a wand type device that most resembles the length and shape of a medium to large size knife. With a little more searching you can find smaller or larger models to suite your needs. I hope this helps.   TOM

Martial Arts Topics / Knife
« on: July 13, 2005, 02:35:33 PM »
TBONE,   It has been a while since I have fought at a "DB" gathering but basicly (back then) knife fighting was used as a warm up exercise before a day of stickfighting, and although it  does attract some serious knife fighters the main focus was on stick, staff and other alike weapons. As to why we don't see much grappling with the knife probably is the nature of the weapon.(if you treat it with the respect it deserves). It would be easy to crash in and grapple with practice weapons but against a real knife is a different story. I like to get in and deliver my shot and get out as quick as possible without getting hit myself and would only grapple when absolutely necessary or if a great opportunity to dissarm presented itself. In a real knife fight I would utilize my inviorment. Chairs bricks sticks and the like can turn the tables of a knifefight or any fight for that matter.  As far as your question about scoring at a "DB" gathering, I don't think it is going to happen anytime in the near future. Read the rules(for lack of a better term) Soyoc Kali seems to be the prefered knife system among many of the dogbrothers but not the rule as there are none except "Be friends at the end of the day. I hope this answers some of your questions. P.S. I am not the most qualified person to answer these questions but took it upon myself to do so just in case no one else does. I do believe this info. to be accurate. ALSO: I work with a group that utilizes STUN GUN technology to add a little more consiquence to knife sparring. The long handle ones that resemble a short stick work best.  Take care,  Tom

I am not seeing the blood or spatter in the photos mentioned. I only see shadows and grainy areas of photos. Original prints are much clearer I'm shure. Is it possible you are seeing the chips in the paint on the bay door back dropping the photo. By the way, I did some research and found that the only blood testing done in profesional sports is done on a voluntary basis except for pro boxing and even then it is only" REQUIRED" in the state of nevada. Other states do not require testing. Even after the stunning news of Magic Johnson's aquiring AIDS he was still alowed to play as you may remember. The rules have changed in pro basketball since then. Now if a player is found to have AIDS he is not alowed to play. Still after all that, testing in pro basketball is done on a voluntary basis and is not required.  Just some food for thought.   Tom stillman

Crafty,   I would have to agree. I also believe this to be a low risk group and the presence of the mask would tend to reduce blood spatter. I also have much faith in ring masters (you and others) abilities to sence danger in the ring and being a good safety net for the fighters. Also: Poor choice of words on my part. I think the word sparring does not qualify in describing this type of "FIGHTING". I stand corrected.  Sincerely your friend and follower.   Tom Stillman

Best to use a longer and more round shaped type of stun gun rather than the short square type. Search Google Images for "Stun Gun" to see different types. ALSO: I suggest padding the stun gun with a 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick mini cell foam padding wraped with black electricle tape to help protect the device from heavy impact.
