I think one issue as well is regardless of where the material is presented if it's available it could get into the wrong hands.  Regardless of if someone is selling DVD's or posting on youtube, if it's public, it's public.

The other thing I thought of is the concept that I remember Guro Inosanto stating which was when we were doing knife defense at a seminar.  He said:

"What am I teaching you right now?"

Someone replied "how to defend against a knife."

He said "Wrong, I'm teaching you how to use a knife offensively."

This stuck with me, and many other instructors have said the same thing.  Correct me if I'm wrong but how I took it was:

If you are learning defense you are also thinking about how to beat the defensive techniques and in a sense, be offensive.  Whether or not this is actually the case I have yet to make up my mind but I did think it was an interesting point.  So with that said, if this is true even defensive knife techniques could be used by the "bad guys."

I've heard things as crazy as "they can pull their testicles up into their body right before impact."

My opinion; they either don't have any balls or can deal with the pain.  There have been plenty of sick clips online of S&M where a guy is getting off on women kicking them in the nuts, stepping on their balls with heels, etc.  I think we should be asking them what's up as I believe they would give us a clearer view of what is actually going on than the Combat Ki guys.

Fedor vs Arlvoski  8-)    Im down with anything, Fedor!

With all this talk of AA working on his boxing with Freddie, I wonder how much he's been working his takedown defense which is what he should be the most worried about.  I can Fedor taking him down and dominating on the ground.  I can see AA right now on his back, Fedor in side control.

It would be cool to set a date soon as well regardless of location so we can start making travel arrangements?  Worst case scenario couldn't we just use the park again like the first day of the gathering last April?

Martial Arts Topics / East Coast Day of Hard Sparring
« on: January 01, 2009, 06:54:37 PM »
East Coast Inhabitants,

We are looking to have a day of hard sparring late January / early February at my gym in State College, PA to help our fighters ready themselves for the April gathering.  Right now we have around five people looking to fight in April from all different weight classes.  Our plan is to get a number of schools from the east coast and mid-west to come and train for a day, spar, hang out, etc.  We want to make the matches as close to Gatherings style as possible while still keep people safe and keeping it in the realm of "sparring" and not fighting.  However, we also want to have everyone push themselves and wear minimal protective gear and use larger diameter sticks.  We also have both a cage and ring to hold the matches in so we will be able to get twice as many matches in during the day if need be.

We would like to avoid WEKAF head gear and instead use fencing masks.  We would also like to limit the hand protection to equal to or lighter than street hockey gloves.  However, if wearing more protection is the only way you would be willing to spar we can deal with it.   We simply want to avoid any non-realistic behavior due to protective gear.

Please post back if you are interested and as soon as we drum up some interest we will set a date that works for everyone.  We have about three other schools interested in joining us so far.  Please don't be shy, come and spar so we can all make ourselves better!  Any questions feel free to email me at ryangruhn@hotmail.com.

Respectfully,

Dog Ryan Gruhn

I'm grateful to have the oppertunity to work with Youth in our Youth Martial Arts program at my gym.  We graduated thirty students tonight to their next belt including one black belt and one assistant instructor!  Nothing gives me more joy than to see the smiles on their faces when they put on their new belts!

It's interesting because the "style" is a well developed game plan which is spelled out in the DBMA Kali Tudo set.  I'm a huge fan of this material as it has led many of my fighters to victories over very formidable opponents.  Triggonomics (outside footwork) is the name of the game:

(from another forum)
Sugar Ray eats this Cuban guy alive for the 1976 Gold Medal.

1.)Always stays outside the Cuban's lead. Works his jab and jab-hook combos. Parry's the jab and puts a cross down the middle.

2.) When he moves right, He never moves into the cross, always laterally with his right hand up.

3.) His footwork is amazing. He does a great little move that the Cuban never catches. He takes one step to his right and then rolls left, getting the Cuban to "bite" on the right step and throw the left cross. Classic. A blueprint for righties everywhere.

It was also on G4 so the keyboard fights were a perfect fit!

Guro,

So I can get it straight in my head please let me know if I am following correctly:

Tribe - (insert name here) Dog

Pack - (insert name here) Dog, C-Dog's & Dogs

DBMAA Members - all of the above plus people who are on this forum.

Is this correct?

LOL!

Switching gears, one of our fighters, Paul Bradley continued his streak of being undefeated by beating Dante Rivera last weekend in a title match for Ring of Combat:

Paul was on the Ultimate Fighter, a wrestling stand out (All American) and is now starting to showcase his skills on his feet.

Some fighters are great IN SPITE of what they do, not because of it.

That's true, but this wasn't the case.

Note that Hatton who ridiculed Mayweather's training, swallowed his pride enough to hire Mayweather senior as his trainer.
He won his recent fight by totally dominating his opponent. Better body positioning, better reactions inside. He even stated how some of his old habits were still exposing him to punches.

Mayweather senior hasn't coached or cornered Jr. for a decent number of years.  From what I gather father and son have never been further apart.

Impressive fight from Sherk last night!  It received fight of the night and rightly so.  Bummer about Anderson & Cote.  I hate seeing people get injured and unable to continue.  On a more positive note I think I saw just about every variation in Silva's footwork last night, how cool!  His footwork is so impressive and I'm glad that we are finally seeing fighters that can switch leads at will in a technical way.  I also give props to Cote for being able to keep up with Anderson and have the eye to see what Silva was doing with his footwork.  Mark D. had some great cornering advice as well.  Amongst many other things he mentioned that when Anderson stops moving he is timing Cote and I believe this to be true.

This will be his second fight without the additional help.  To change gears it was great to see Sled Dog in "Countdown to UFC" on Spike talking about Cote.  I am always in BTT Canada's corner but I REALLY like Silva for this fight.

He lost to BJ but I don't think that was because of the lack of vitamins.  IMHO superior reach and take down defense is what won that fight for BJ.

Griffin has a pretty impressive record with wins over Urijah Faber, Duane Ludwig, Clayton Guida and a number of others.  His only loss is to Frank Edgar which went all three rounds and in my book, went down as one of the best and most technical fights at 155.  He's no slouch but I'm fairly confident that Sherk is going to do very well against him.
