Do a search.  I did so several months ago and came up with some good results.  There is also an entire site dedicated to the comic.  I remember it being used in the context of "Come you Dog Brothers."

John,
I have found that adrenalin is my best friend when fighting.  In my last tournament I took a good amount of hits from the other guys stick and I only really remember feeling one of them.  I honestly believe that when weapons are involved no matter what the weapon is, there is no way to condition the body to getting hit by them.  While I do believe to a certain extent that the body does "harden" I also belive that there is a limit to how far it can go.

vigil,
I'm with ya buddy.  As for the cost of home made sticks I would say that the ones I have made ($4.88 for 8 sticks) last for about three hard sessons and then they are toast.  I think I spend about 15 minutes making each one.  My advice would be the same as yours vigil.  If ya don't mind making them and keeping them up to snuff its a fine way to go.  If you want a long term tool, go with a soft stick.

Pipe insulation has always worked for us.  However, the soft stick companies sell their product for a very reasonable price when you think of how long they last.  I use SMAK-STIKS and swear by them.  I have yet to break one.

Oracle,
I currently teach Kali to our Youth JKD class and have found that if taught correctly it will only benifit them.  Anything for that matter that is hand/eye will increase their overall skill.  While I don't get into the fighting and things that are more intense I do go into a lot of things that will train attributes.

Martial Arts Topics / "Energy" drills and real contact stick fighting
« on: April 17, 2005, 01:50:14 PM »
Trapping and Energy go beyond what is taught in the fundamentals of JKD and Kali and the drills as just that, drills.  They are meant to give a person the understanding of situations but are not end all solutions to any one situation.  Bruce Lee himself even acknowledged this as it was the reason he created Chinese Kickboxing later to be simply coined ?Kickboxing.?  I use trapping every time I grapple and come into clench range stick or no stick.  While it is nothing close to the basic trapping such as ?Pac Da? it all leads off of what I have been taught and being able to feel the other person?s energy.  You also have to think out of the box when you ask yourself ?Do I do this?? or ?Is this useful.?  There are so many ways to throw a striking technique yet when we were first learning we were shown one fundamental way and were left to explore off of that.  A good example is with the round kick.  A teacher may show you how to do it and emphasize a TKD round kick with more of a snap where as later down the road you might lean more of a Thai based round kick.  You could then ask yourself, was learning the TKD kick useless?  Of course not, it helped you train balance, coordination, timing, etc.  I believe this leads into energy drills and trapping also.  I believe that all ?drills? train attributes and no one drill is useless.  It would be ignorant for any one person to say such a thing as it would only lead to improvement on their behalf.

I would opt against hard plastic (skateboarding, rollerblading) pads for the elbow pads.  Make sure you are able to extend and contract each joint as it would without the pad.  With such pads I have not recieved the full movement of my joints.

As for fencing helmets I got mine off of eBay and I LOVE THEM!

Russ,
Have you been to any of his seminars before?  The reason I ask is that I have heard his "style" has continued to remain true to its roots but that he is very open to a lot of the new stuff that is coming around (BJJ, NHB, etc).  I was interested in finding out if he incorparated anything new into the seminars.

Yeah,
Mike is one of the guys that is fighting out of the gym right now and has a great record.  He has been working his way up the chain in the CSW ranking under Mr. Erik Paulson also which has been a great addition to our classes.

I'm sorry to hear you hate QJJ so much, some stuff must have gone down between you and them.  They still have been bringing in some really good seminars that I usually go to and a few of the guys have actually stopped going to the club and started coming to our gym.  I believe the only reason is that they now have access to bags, the ring and mat at any time instead of having to sit around waiting for the rec room to be free of on campus.

Nope wasn't QJJ,
Ill PM ya about it.  I don't have anything bad to say about them though.  And if I did or ever do I don't really find any reason to speak of it.  At our school we feel its just not worth getting the the "our club hates your club war."  I would definitely love to roll with you at some point, I have been trying to up my ground game for a while and any new blood is good blood as far as my skills are concerned.  Who did you know that trained at SCMAA/Titan?

Well,
In all the comps I plan to do everything goes so I have continued in my roots of Shooto, MT, JKD, and of course Kali.  Our school has several great MMA fighters that are currently fighting.  The reason I mentioned the seminar is that as you know DBMA isn't just swinging a stick, I honestly can't think of any style/system that would not benefit from a seminar of DB material.  Some of my largest grappling epiphanies have been when I have a stick in my hand and I am on the ground.  Another reason is that I know of a club at PSU that took a kali seminar here in PA with us and they all absolutely loved it, they too were coming from a ground based system.
I know what you mean about Oishi, I heard it through the grape vine that he isn?t exactly fond of the material taught at our school.  O well, he?s his ways.

I also posted the question on a Finnish fencing forum, they recommended a 1600-series mask.  Most of them are FIE approved.

- Marko

The only thing you will notice is that on the fencing forum they are all about the extremly expensive masks.  I don't think this is a "must" for what we are doing.  I posted on a few of the fencing forums and told them what I was doing with the mask and they all made it sound like they treated their masks like gold.  When I said I was going to be hitting it with a stick they all said there was no way they would ever use their mask for such a thing.  In a way I totally agree with them, there is no reason to pay that kind of money for somthing that really isn't built that much better for what we are doing.

Eyeglasses, not goggles.... The need is that I don't see s**t withou them.

About the models, well, the question basically was, what model would you recommend? If I'm looking for one, all-around mask, would it have to be a sabre mask or something else? I have to admit that I don't know too much about fencing masks, the need is to provide enough protection for both light and hard contact.

- Marko

My Bad,
My father wears his when we fight.  The only problem is getting the mask on and off with the glasses on; they tend to move around but he seems to have a pretty good system down.  As for a model you might want to start off with a cheeper mask first to see if it is what you want before you go and spend a couple hundred on a really good fencing mask.  I have purchased a few off of ebay from http://www.alexandrsport.com/mask.htm and I love the masks.  For the price you can't beat the quality.

Will do.

Mainly it'll be for boxing work. I just went to a Panantukan seminar with Neil Mcleod at the Bob Breen Academy in London, and had a blast. Although I was pretty pleased with how my footwork and sensitivity are coming along (I do almost all my training at home with a housemate, when he's around), ultimately my hitting tools felt weak and innaccurate. So I'm looking at working those punches and elbows at close quarters, mostly in terms of technique and timing rather than sheer power.

Cool!
Sounds like you have the right idea of getting a bag to up the power in your punching and elbowing.  It is a good thing you brought up the elbows because when doing elbow strikes it is better not to do them on a canvas bag; it tears up your skin.  Try to get a leather bag (not canvas).  I have found the canvas bags can give you brush burns also.  If you do get a canvas bag you might start pushing into your elbows rather than driving through since driving through will give you brush burns.  This will train you to elbow in an incorrect manor.  Bag work is the best way to build power in your punches!  Let us know what you end up getting!

I think a couple things you need to think of before you get one are:

1.   Where are you going to hang it? - you need a sturdy beam or a free standing frame.
2.   What are you planning on doing? ? Thai, Boxing, Krabi-Krabong, etc.  This will have an impact on what size bag you should get.

When it comes to bag work part of the training is the bag swinging which trains agility and timing.  Bag work is meant for one person; if there were always two people there would be no reason for there to be a bag!  I recommend getting some bag training instructional videos or taking a few classes after you decide on a bag.

Not against empty hand.  I have found it is rather common.  On the other hand (no pun intended) when dealing with stick against stick I am sure the hand will get pulled in after a couple nice wacks.  I learned my lesson for leaving it out there.  As Eric shows in the power videos to get it out there in between shots but not to leave it out there.
