Hey Everyone!

Since our training group is on the east coast we have less of a chance to be able to make it to the west coast for a Dog Brothers Gathering.  I am planning on getting out there this summer again to LA if my schedule allows it but the rest of our group will be stuck back in Pa.  I was wondering if any schools/groups would be interested in having a day of fighting up at our gym in Pa.  In all reality we can and are willing to travel anywhere in PA if need be to get some fighting in but we defintaly have the room to host the fights!  We are simply in need of some more interaction with people outside of our training group to help better ourselves both as fighters and martial artists.?

Let Me Know!

Does anyone have an idea of when certification began?  Not just for JKD but in general.  I was actually thinking about this the other day.  At some point, someone must have said ?ahh haa!  You need certification to teach ?my? style.  And obviously before that it must have been a free for all.  Was certification adopted from a certain area of the world?  Did Japan or Korea coin the idea for instance then others liked the idea and followed in their foot steps?  I strongly believe in application over certification but out of the respect of others I feel that if they insist on certification to teach their style it is a must; as with Si-Gung Lee.

Wow,
Talk about an accident!  The reason I asked is because a break from compression like a really bad stove is different than a break when the bone is snapped per say (sorry for the horrible definitions).  Just be aware of your hands and maybe go left lead instead of right so you can keep the hurt hand otu of the way.  With sticks 3/4" thick all I have ever gotten from them are really bad stick hickeys, I have yet to hear of a broken bone with sticks that skinny either but I am sure it has happened.  Up the diameter and everything changes!

Speaking of, what is the numbering system that you use?  Infact, what are the number systems for any of the groups for that matter, Crafty?  I know from the first set of videos instead of settins numbers to the strikes DBMA would rather call them forward hards, back hands and slashes and jabs.  My Sifu set an extremly specific numbering pattern that I think is very effective but I would love to observe some others.

fatwrath,
It is interesting to see how people with no training by instinct do certian techniques such as the cave man or the all to famous backhand stance.  They also tend not to have what Crafty calls Polio hand (correct me if I am wrong about the name Marc) and they end up having very active check hand.

I have seen people that are used to other arts go right into sparring.  I personally wanted to do it the first day I started and I think I could have.  In short, it all depends on the person.

There is a school in my area.  I linked to the school's website in my post.  (First paragraph.)

Thanks for the link though.  It didn't list any schools I could get to, it seems the one I linked to in my first post is the only one I can attend, and believe me, I have done a lot of looking.

Edit:  I'm sorry, I just realized I phrased my question improperly.  I know how to go about finding schools, I don't know how to tell good FMA schools apart from bad ones.  I have found a school, I want to know if it's good.  This is what I need help with.  Sorry for the confusion.  I'm pretty dumb/inarticulate.

Personally,
I don't think anyone can say if a school is good or bad unless they have gone to it; and even then it is only their opinion!  As far as a set model of what a school should be I doubt you will ever find one.  No one system is the best, no one type of school is the best.  Check out that school and let us know what you think of it!  I think that would be the best next step!

Guru Crafty, I know that you've stated that other than correspondence,  the two organizations have no ties, but I was wondering if any Black Eagle society members have participated at Dogbrother gatherings or if any Dogbrothers have participated at Black Eagle Society gatherings and what thier experiance was. Thanks! Simply curious..

Why not just say, if all the Dog Brothers had a big fight with the Black Eagle Society, who would win?

That's clearly what you REALLY wanted to ask     ;D

Humm,
I don't think that is what he meant.  I think the question was geared more towards if any different styles or techniques came out in the process of the gathering, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Take a look at these training blades:

I don't think you should have a problem with them in your bags other than the carry ons.  When I went to a seminar several years ago I just put little sticky notes on them saying "training blades for martial arts."  They still searched the bags but atleast they know what they are.

I'm well aware that I did the right thing--I have no doubt that the kid would have been clipped by that car had I not intervened--but I am personally appalled at the mother's indifference to her child, before, during, and after the incident in question.

Like I said, I just pray that the kid gets treated better than that from now on.

Yeah,
I deal with this kind of thing on a daily basis working with kids.  Parents over look their kids especially in a larger family.  It's a shame but it is also part of life.

Rafael, Noy, & Everyone Else,

Also of interest:

About the term "Kali"
The word "kali" did not come about until about 20 years or so ago and seems to have been coined somewhere, sometime by Filipinos living in the USA. I have personally conducted a search for the word "kali" amongst old people of the major tribes and, except for "kalis" which means sword and "kali" in Ilocano, which means "a hole in the ground"; there is no other word or cognate of "kali".

Ilustrisimo used "kali" on the insistence of Mr. Leo Gaje who had visited with Tatang and also by an American anthropologist specializing in hoplology (which is a study of handheld, non-missile weapons), who seemed to have picked it up from Dan Inosanto's book. When I joined Tatang, "Kali Ilustrisimo" had been registered for about two or three years. Tony Diego (the present head of the Ilustrisimo system) and I, after the research mentioned, decided that "Kalis" is the more appropriate word because it means "sword" and would then mean the "Sword of Ilustrisimo." The name has not been formally registered except on a website but we had decided on this even when Tatang was still active and alive.

Thoughts?

Peace,

David/Spad/TFS

Very interesting,
I have also heard this but was not sure of the truth behind it.

Questions and Comments:

a.   When did Guro Dan Inosanto first meet and train with Mr. Ben Largusa? What year?

b.   From the dates above training of Guro Dan Inosanto with Juan LaCoste puts it around mid-1960s to late-1960s, until his death in 1977.

c.   If Guro Dan Inosanto trained with Mr. Ben Largusa, while he trained with Mr. Juan LaCoste, is there a chance that the word and concept of Kali transferred from Largusa, to Inosanto, then to LaCoste, who merely agreed to the term?

(more to come...)

Good questions,

Woof Miguel,

Great points!

I think another point I should bring up is the definition of fighting.  I have always thought of boxing, wrestling, and so on to be so called ?sports.?  Fighting on the other hand is more NHB where everything and anything goes.  The differences are the rules; in fighting there are close to no rules and in the sports there are strict limits.  Because of this I would most defiantly consider DBMA for instance, fighting and point sparring for a sport.

Yes baseball and boxing have evolved but it is still the same thing, a sport.  I think fighting has evolved into a more tactical event but is more or less the same as when we first started fighting.

Just My Opinion,

Gruhn

I have heard forms of these quotes from a horde of people:

?You either fight or you don?t fight?

This quote obviously insisting that there are no real styles of martial arts, they are all fighting.  I also like the analogy that style is an individual fixation on a personal level.  Style can be tight, weak, quick, smooth, loose, heavy, soft, hard, or any other description for that matter; but what it can?t be is one set thing.  For instance, you don?t hear people saying ?I study the ?Babe Ruth? form/style of baseball.?  People may study Babe Ruth?s attributes, but there is no such thing as a ?Babe Ruth? style of baseball.  In conclusion, you either fight or you don?t fight.

?As long we humans have two arms and two legs it will all be the same when it comes to fighting?

If I can recall the top of my hand took close to two months before I was holding a stick again and the pinky(s) were taped and holding a stick the next week.  Unfortunately there is not much you can do for hand injuries.  It left plenty of time to work on the other hand and its ability level.

What kinds of injuries have y'all gotten from either your training or from "real contact" stickfighting an' how long did it take to heal and what was your method of recovery? Also do you still feel the effects your injury(or injuries) today? Thanks, I'm interested about participated in a gathering but leery of some of the aftermaths, I'm sure you can relate.

Most notably hand injuries.  I have broken the bones on the top of the hand and both pinky fingers.  The top of the hand was from shots from my opponent and the pinky fingers were from going into clench with sticks.  I have yet to have any other serious injuries but I am sure others will share their battle wounds in the thread as time goes on.
