What about a DVD in which DBMA fighters past and present discuss/teach a technique/concept/tactic/idea/training methodology that has worked for them in the adrenal state? This might be something that Ron shoots a little of here and there at Gatherings/DBMA seminars and then is cobbled together over time.

I was able to take my wife to Downtown Los Angeles today, have a nice meal in a semi-fancy restaurant, then attend a symphony, and all on a teacher's salary! Some people in this life have more than I do. Some have less. Today, I am grateful for what I have.

Today, there have been some strange events in close, family relationships that make me question the nature of the universe. I am grateful that I seem to be getting maybe a little wiser. I didn't spend very long thinking about it. I have faith that the sun will rise tomorrow, and things will be a little more clear.

I think I went in for the first time after about two years. I made the mistake of attending a Gathering as a spectator about a month into my formal FMA training. I was shocked and appalled at the lack of clean deflection to checking to snake/vine disarms!   :-P  (The tongue face to indicate my naivete)

A few years after that, after being a troll on the boards and on the DBMA site, I ended up watching the clip on this site entitled "Rumbling Ruminations". I attended a DLO seminar shortly after that and I believe my first Gathering was a few months after that. I did not have any DBMA training, nor did I (unwisely) pursue any of the DBMA materials until about two Gatherings in.  It's been 27 stick fights now, and I consider DBMA to be one of the most important elements of my training matrix.

So tankdriver, I'll give my usual recruitment spiel: anyone out there who has ever considered participating should be out there doing so. There truly is a "higher consciousness" that exists just above the world of drilling, sparring, and your day job. It's right there for all those who want it.

tankerdriver,

Guro Louie teaches on Sundays, from 11:30-2:30.  He covers... whatever strikes his fancy. He spends a lot of time on Silat, which he does incredibly well. Last time I took his class, we did LucayLucay Kali material for single stick and then stick and dagger. Guro Louie is also a GREAT Wing Chun instructor. If you ask him, he'll pretty much mold the day to what was requested. We have a Silat seminar coming up at the acadmey. Guro often spends time preparing the student body for whatever is approaching. I believe Guro Louie holds an associate instructorship in the LucayLucay material, so yes, he does teach it.

Guro Crafty,

It will be a good two weeks before I see Guro Louie, but when I do, I'll be sure to give him your best. A few years ago, when I told him that I was beginning to participate in the Gatherings, he had kind words for the organization, which was inspiring at the time.

tankerdriver,

I trained with Sifu Bud yesterday. He had some trouble with one of his hips and some surgery a little while ago, so he doesn't drop down into full splits anymore. He's still at the academy all of the time, and he teaches all of the classes not covered by other instructors. Sifu makes most of the old seminar DVD's available through the main office, and I know he has ALL of them, so you might want to approach him first. Guro Louis Campos has a Sunday class, and he often features Guro Ted's material, along with ALL of the other things that he does so well.

Craig,

Off the top of my head, I believe that Pak Vic has a DVD (single or series, I don't know) called "Blitzing Sticks", and if I am not mistaken, the DVD has a guest spot from one Guro Dan Inosanto. I believe that it was put out by Unique Productions. All of that is without me getting up to look through old issues of Inside Kung-fu to verify. I don't know if that DVD is on the Serak site or not, or if that helps.

Sorry to plug another video on the DBMA forum. Let's just say that you'll also need a copy of the first RCSF DVD "Power" to figure out if you can get a good shot from those curved sticks.  :-D

Maxx,

Like I told you when we first met, with your work ethic, it is just a matter of getting through your first Gathering, and then you know what it is, and then you're in it.

I hate to point out the obvious, but you need to make sure that you come home safe, so that you can do that.

I look forward to that a great deal, having you hand me my a$$, and then getting to say, "Well, he did come out of my training group." Be safe.

RESPECT,

Bryan

Today at 10 AM, the husband of an old high school friend gave up his long battle with cancer and passed away. My very good friend is a widow at thirty. Today, I am grateful to have known the man, what he meant to my friend, and his reminder that while we say things like this, we must remember that life truly is short and it is important to try and make the best of the time that we have.

Chad,

To fill in some info. for you on the other side, Coach Greg Nelson is a great martial artist and teacher. I am always so inspired by him, not only from his amazing list of accomplishments, but because of his amazing recovery from cancer. I've heard amazing things about Sifu Rick Faye for years now. Obviously he is one of the best in the Inosanto family.

IMHO, you should try to train with both of those amazing men who are so close to you, develop what you would like to work on for a Gathering from your DBMA research and what you are getting in class, and then book your plane ticket to attend a Gathering so that your goal manifests itself in the timeframe you mentioned. Obviously, time and money make the matter a little more complicated than that, but it doesn't have to be if you stick to your plan. I hope to meet you soon at a Gathering.

Bryan

Maxx,

I'm sorry to have missed my window to get to you by phone this summer. I tried several other times by E-mail and messages on this site. I had a job search going on and some getting over a really terrible work year to do, which was capped off by my broken foot, which was NOT martial arts related, but actually occurred on the job as a cherry to the worst academic year of my life. Anyway, I am now at another school, and the last few weeks have been great!

I really enjoyed training with you. Congrats on all of your numbers on those physical skills. I told you that you were pacing yourself at a superhuman level! Just listen to your body, and don't burn out. I have some new guys in the training group that have been working pretty hard, and one is getting ready to fight again after being thrown into the fray about a decade ago!

Respect to all of the members of our military. Nothing but respect and awe from me to you. Maxx, I wish that your time in service for our country shapes up to be what you were looking for. Take care of yourself, and most importantly, get home safe! I hope that we have a chance to train together again in the not too distant future. It sounds like I'll be attending YOUR training group when you get home.  All the best.

Be Safe,

Bryan

Saw John Williams last night at the Hollywood Bowl.  As someone who was raised right at the perfect time to have Raiders of the Lost Ark and the original Star Wars trilogy change my perceptions forever about what a movie could be, I am grateful to have heard both "The Raiders March" and "The Imperial March" live last night.   :)
