“wuff” everybody,

I’m planing on posting a series of specific stick fighting workout clips. Each video will focus on another solo training topic.

In my assessment solo training is an important part of our training. Of course training with a partner is still the most relevant one. But some time we just don’t have a partner to train with, and otherwise has solo training also a lot to offer...

I hope that some of these workouts will give you some new ideas for your training.

I will put every 1 or 2 weeks a new video up on my you tube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/LonelysDen/videos

indeed i like the idea a lot

it would be also interesting what kind of philosophy and/or principle (maxim/motto/ central theme) the different Training Groups have.

Gathering report 2011

other than last year we decided to have this year only a 1 day gathering. The decision was made after I saw that on both days of Euro Gathering 2010 weren't as many fight as hoped-for…
and what an awesome Gathering we had! We had more fights this year in one day then on the two days together last year.

Indeed one of the best gathering we had so far in Europe. 53 fighters from various countries came to fight. We had people from Canada, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Scotland, Slovenia,  Spain and Switzerland.

The registered fighters were:  Benjamin "Lonely Dog" Rittiner, Colin "Point Dog" Stewart, Detlef "Sinatra Dog" Thiem, Heiko "Crossover Dog" Zauske, Ivan "Kuma Dog" Reboli, Oskar "Spider Dog" Bernal, Stefan "Cro Dog" Kostanjevec, Tinu "3D Dog" Blatter, Chris "C-Lazy Dog" Goard, Chris "C-Rogue Dog" Smith, Daniel "C-Hidden Dog" Budar, Jerome "C-Frisbee Dog" Challon, Kai "C-Suicide Dog" Schilling, Lynn "C-Psycho Bitch" Brown, Oli "C-Ghost Dog" Schaer, Peter "C-Grumpy Dog" Fray, Thomas "C-Gong Fu Dog" Holtmann, Thomas "C-Sword Dog" Rickert, Thorsten "C-Lena Dog" Picker, "Dog" Benjamin Schlieper, "Dog" Filippo Pani, "Dog" Ivan Pirozhkov, "Dog" Kai Spintig, "Dog" Kostas Tountas, "Dog" Manfred Schilka, "Dog" Ray Wilson, Alexander Danckert, Andraz Bole, Andy Börngen, Arianna Accorte, Benjamin Salvisberg, Branko Bersa, Christine Martell, Damion Thomas, Ericson Hölzchen, Kostadin Zlatkov, Marco Castrovillari, Martin Helm, Mathias Fürer, Nils Hartmann, Pascal Gilles, Patrick Villing, Pavel Iliev, Peter Moll, Rudolf Pollak, Sanel Ukic, Tim Oliver Dreyer, Theo Goodman, Thore Baumgarten, Timo König, Timo Planke, Tobias Philippi, Ziga Polajnar

I’m very pleased to see that the fighters used such a big range of various weapons this year. We had fights with: stick, double stick, baston y daga, staff, 3-sectional staff, sword, sarong with baseball, mace/flail

There were a lot of great fight! It will be tough to recollect the whole day and hardly possible to relate everything… here some fights that cross my mind.

 -  “Crossover Dog” fought a lot and with the largest range of weapons

 -  Pavel and his convincing ambidextrous single stick game

 -  Our “Bitches”, Lynn, Tine, and Ary had some fantastic fights. Good to see that female fighters are a fixture of the European Gathering!!

 -  Happy to see “Ghost Dog” back in action, he fought well

 -  “c- Gong Fu Dog” had some interesting fights with his 3-sectional staff

 -  Filippo stood out as well, although the smallest fighter that day, did he some excellent fights against often a lot larger guys. Truly he deserved to be elevated to Candidate Dog Brother.

 -  Many German clans were strong as usual: the “Cro Dog” clan, the “c- Hidden Dog” clan, the “c- Lena Dog” clan, the “c-Suicide Dog” clan, and the “c- Old Dog” clan. Good to see that dose groups are developing strong.

Of course there is a lot more that should be reported… but as I said it’s was a too big a day to relate everything.

After the Gathering it was time for the “Dog Dubbing”. But before we turn towards the announcement of the new members of the tribe, there was a matter of big meaning for me.

As many of you know did Abu "c- Desert Dog" Dayyeh passed away this year. He died doing something that meant the world for him. And so the “Council of Elders” decided to elevate him post mortem to full Dog Brother.

After all the fighters gathered for the dog-dubbing “Cro Dog” read a letter he got from Abu’s widow, in which she thanked everybody for the generous donation she got from the Dog Brothers. She mentioned also that she is happy to know that her husband was part of the Dog Brothers and had good friends among us.
...verily emotional moments for many of us.
I’m honoured to announce that Abu Dayyeh is now known as "Desert Dog"!

Announcement of the “Dog Dubbing” Euro Gathering 2011:

New full Dog Brothers are:
Abu " Desert Dog" Dayyeh
Oli "Ghost Dog" Schaer
Jerome "Frisbee Dog" Challon
Peter "Grumpy Dog" Fray
Thomas "Sword Dog" Rickert
Lynn "Psycho Bitch" Brown

New Candidate DBs are:
Benjamin "C- Thunder Dog" Schlieper
Filippo "C- Vegan Dog" Pani
Ivan "C- Dog" Pirozhkov
Kostas "C- Spartan Dog" Tountas
Manfred "C- Cop Dog" Schilka

And with a big welcome “Wuff” here the new additions to the Tribe:
"Dog" Andraz Bole
"Dog" Ericson Hölzchen
"Dog" Nils Hartmann
"Dog" Timo Planke

"Bitch" Arianna Accorte
"Bitch" Christine Martell

Indeed this was a very exciting and successful event, and we all are looking forward with anticipation to the next Euro Gathering in 2012.

as equipment just bring sticks, (maybe some padded ones too), a training knife, some gloves (mma and fma), a pair outdoor shoes, a pair shoes for training indoor (training hall).

Dear members of the Tribe and friends

The autopsy bring out the cause of Abu’s dead. He had a cardiac arrest induced by a congenital heart defect in conjunction with a chronic pulmonary disease and a premeditate flu.

Given above indication, nothing on earth could have rescued him or could have provided any chance to survive.

Torben “C-Old Dog”, Stefan “Cro Dog” and myself had the chance to get in contact with Abu’s widow. It was a good to have the opportunity to give our condolence directly to her. It was also a big relief to hear, that she found it comfortingly to know in what circumstances Abu had to pass away. She was glad to hear that he was surrounded by people he liked  and practicing his precious stickfighting.

I was touched by her fortitude.

I was glad to see how big the resonance was and how many people from the DB community gave their condolence.

It was wonderful to see how many people are willing to donate, in order to decrease the financial pressure to the family.

We will get in contact with Abu’s widow by end of march to convey the collected donation.

If you wish to donate please do so until 25. march. You have 2 possibilities:

1. Through Stefan “Cro Dog” paypal account, Stefan.Kostanjevec@googlemail.com

2. Torben “C-Old Dog” banc account, please get in contact with me (lonelydog@dogbrothers.ch)  and I will give you personally his banc account details.

Thanks

A sad wuff,

Abu "C- Desert Dog" Vanda passed away last Saturday 19. February.

Abu participated last weekend at the Sparring Meeting that is monthly hosted by Torben “c- Old Dog”. A very nice event to which many fighters from all over Germany participate. This S-Day was even a special one as it was the 50th Sparring Meeting of the Wolfpack.

The S-Day commenced very well, the participant were in good mood and the vibes were relaxed and happy.
Abu was warming up with double stick, and hearing music through headsets. He was as always very motivated and elated to do as many fights as possible.

As usual the day started with Knife fights as warm up, Abu did the last Knife fight before switching over to stick fights.
He did three single stick fights, his fights where very technical and with no hard contact, easy sparring just.

His last two fights where in a row, and his last fight ended up in clinch and ground. There was no hit to the head, no hard takedown, no hard impact at all. He got up and seemed fine, just a bit winded maybe.
He went from the fighting area and sat down on the stairs, talking to his last sparring partner in a friendly manner, whilst the next fight continued. He comment that he feels a bit short-winded, and that two fights in a row might have been a little to much.

After that he was starting to hyperventilate. Torben talked to him and encourage him to breath calmly. View seconds later, his eyes rolled back - no pulse, no breath. One of the fighter that stood near by started immediately with the revival, he indeed acted very professional.

The emergency ambulance was instantly called, and they arrived just a view minutes later. The also started immediately with their revival. They did their work for almost 120 minutes before they declared him dead – It seems that he was dead just when his eyes rolled back.

Abu was part of the munich clan and so I met him the first time. That must be 4 or 5 years ago. Since then I saw him on different seminars I gave in Germany and Switzerland. He also fought regularly at our “Gathering of the Pack” in Switzerland.

I know that Dog Brothers meant all the world for him. He was always enthusiastic when I saw him at seminars and gatherings. He truly loved stickfighting. I know that he was very happy when he got his Candidate DB name.

He died doing what he love the most. He walked as a Warrior for all his days and died as a Stickfighter.

My thoughts are with his family and all the friends he knew.

I talked with Guro Marc “Crafty Dog” and GL Stefan “Cro Dog”, we agreed that we want to do something to help his family monetary. He left behind a wife and 3 kids.

One of the idea is that the Group Leaders who want to help, organize a seminar at their hometown and will donate the proceeds.
If you have interest to do such please get in contact with me.

Abu "C- Desert Dog" Vanda I will truly miss your breeziness…

Guro Benjamin “Lonely Dog” Rittiner

Gathering report 2010

Like last year we had again 2 days of fighting. The “Tribal Gathering” on Friday and the “Regular Gathering” on Saturday. The fighters came from various countries: Switzerland, Germany, England, Scotland, Italy, Spain, France, Norway, Greece, Poland, Slovenia and USA.

The registered fighters were:
Benjamin "Lonely Dog"; Ivan "Kuma Dog"; Marcus "Giri Dog"; Mat "Boo Dog"; Tinu "3D Dog"; Colin "C-Point Dog"; Dominic "C-Sleazy Dog"; Lynn "C-Psycho Bitch"; Oskar "C- Spider Dog"; Peter "C-Grumpy Dog"; Tomek "C-Tank Dog"; Torben "C-Old Dog"; "Dog" Abu Dayyeh; "Dog" Daniel; "Dog" Detlef; "Dog" Gerry; "Dog" Heiko; "Dog" Kai; "Dog" Manfred; "Dog" Pawel; "Dog" Shanu; "Dog" Stefan; "Dog" Thorsten; Andraz Bole; Arianna Allorte; Axel Datschun; Benjamin Schlieper; Chris Hawker; Christine Martell; Damian Dziengo; David Lowndes; Denis Kachelmus; Ericson Hölzchen; Filippo Pani; Francisco T. Rueda; Ivan Pirozhkov; Kai Schwahn; Kai Spintig; Kostas Tountas; Marco Felici; Nils Hartmann; Ole Leinz; Oliver Zaum; Rodolfo M. Diaz; Sigi Fischer; Thomas Holtmann; Timo Planke; Tobias Szuwart; Tristan Carmona; Wiesław Hapke

After the “Magic Words” speech from Guro “Crafty Dog”, everybody was very motivated to start the day.

Because of the big number of fighters, we decided to go without the warm up knife rounds as we did last year.  As usual most fights were done with single sticks or double stick, however we had also some good Staff fights and even a fighter from Germany who fought with a 3 sectional staff.

The decision to have the European “Gathering of the Pack” in July or August is to have the biggest chance for good weather in Switzerland. To keep the costs of the fighters low the Gathering area is close to a campsite. It’s a beautiful location close to the local river “Aare”. The plan was to have all the fighters (some even with their wife and children) on one location, to meet each other, to have interesting conversations, to do some training and to exchange ideas. Unfortunately the weather upsets a bit these good plans, as it was raining quite a bit. Although camping in rain isn’t really funny, I think most guys had a good time.

I was glad that the weather turned better on Friday. So we had the chance to have the tribal gathering outdoor. It was nice to fight on a field. And the weather stayed nice also after the gathering, so we had the possibility to do a barbeque for the fighters at the campsite. It was great to have time to sit around the Campfire and chatting about the adventure that it will continue the next day…

On Saturday we held the Gathering in a traininghall. We decide to have the open Gathering not outdoor to have more control about public matters. We had quite some people who came to watch. Although I think I should try to make more publicity so that we have a bigger crowd the next time. I organized 2 beer barrels to have a drink after the gathering. With this the people who watch the fight and the fighters could exchange their impressions of the day by a beer.

On both days, we had a lot of great fights. It was good to see to have a lot experienced fighters as well as a good amount of newbies. I was glad to see that many fighters did a good progression since the last year. Most fights were technical and one could recognize that the fighters followed game plans and strategies. We saw many fights on a high level and with great spirit. Although the fights were though we had only a few injuries.

On the following day Guro “Crafty Dog” did a seminar in which we did the “Dog Dubbing”.
The “Council of Elders” is proud to announce the new members of the Tribe:

I echo 5Rings comments.  I wear mine quite frequently, including for athletic endeavor (e.g. playing lacrosse with my son).

Also, I forget if you are married, but if you are not you will be able to enjoy the many conversations women initiate with you about them

A big “wuff” to all Fighters, Group Leaders, and DBMA members

I changed the plan, and will do now anyway a small "Training Camp" before the Euro Gathering 2010, namely on Wednesday and Thursday (11. + 12. august).

Inspired by Colin “c-Point Dog” and his idea to classify fighter-types for teaching and coaching. I came up with the idea to make a simple 4-type category:  - Stalker, Counter, Attacker, Mobility -
and to put these 4 fighters types in the context with the 4 elements:  - Earth, Water, Fire, Air -
It’s just a try to have a simple matrix to understand fighters and fight-dynamics better. I know that all these theory-models cannot be perfect, and that these archetypes are rare subsistent. Of course personalities (and fighters) are almost always a blend of different elements/types. Nevertheless this 4 archetype model is very useful to understand your adversary and yourself in a fight…

So the plan for the mini training camp is, to spend 90 minutes for each fighters type / element.

The Camp schedule:
Wednesday: 9.30 – 11.00 (1st Type),  17.00 – 18.30 (2nd Type)
Thursday: 9.30 – 11.00 (3rd Type),  17.00 – 18.30 (4th Type)

(beside of this official training I’m sure that you will find plenty of guys who are willing to train a bit during the day)

The training camp fee is: 100 sfr  (70 euro)

The idea is to stay and train at the campsite "Eichholz" www.campingeichholz.ch
The campsite is in my opinion the best possible accommodation to stay for, not just  that it's very close to the gathering / seminar location but also gives the best possibility to meet the other guys and to do some training the days before.

The costs for the campsite will be around 18 sfr (12 euro) per day.

Schedule for the Camp, Gathering, and Seminar:

Tuesday, 10. august
   - arrival at the campsite "Eichholz"

Wednesday & Thursday, 11. + 12. august
   - training camp (each day 2 training sessions: 9.30-11.00 / 17.00.18.30)

Friday, 13. august
   - tribal gathering, 14.00

Saturday, 14. august
   - gathering 14.00

Sunday, 15. august
   - seminar with Guro “Crafty Dog”, 11.00 - 17.00

If you have interest to do some private lessons  with Guro Marc "Crafty Dog"  between 11. – 16. August, please let me know so I can organize them.

Please register until 18. July!!

If you have any questions, please let me know.
I’m very exited to see many of you again.

for me only these dates will work… any date before or after these dates will be difficult.

April 24-25
May 1-2
May 8-9

moreover it’s important for me and “c-3d dog” to know the date as soon as possible, because the holidays have to be planed very soon (work wise…)

As I have already told everyone the date for this years gathering had to  be shifted to the 24th and 25th of July.

Unfortunately this change of the date caused problems for Guro Marc "Crafty Dog". For him it is not possible to shift his already planned family vacation.
I know that for many this will be a great disappointment. I also greatly regret that he can not be there this year.
However, I will try my best to represent the "council of Elders at the gathering.

The seminar on Sunday  will also happen as planned.  I will give my best to represent Guro "Crafty Dog".
In the coming days I will send further information concerning the seminar on Sunday.

Of course the gathering this year will not be the same without Guro Marc's presence but I still hope that many from you will experience an unforgettable weekend.

wuff, wuff everybody

this are important news considering the euro gathering 2009!

unfortunately i had to change the date, because it was not possible to hold the event at the planned date.
the gathering will take place at a very nice location just next to our river. the great thing is also that just 5 min walking distance there is a camping place. what gives the fighter a cheap accomodation possibility.

unfortunately at the planned date there is also a big open air music event and the whole camping is booked.

so i saw me forced to move the event one week afterwards. the new date is:

- tribal gathering 24. july 2009
- open gathering 25. july 2009
- seminar with guro "crafty dog" 26. july 2009

i hope the new date will work for you as well!
