I just started picking up Training 2 times in one day..I tried it out and actually liked it..Durring the early day , I did workout for about 2 hours..Did my thing durring the day and then later in the day, I went back and did Kali and switch boxing stuff on the bag.

However, I can't do this durring the work week but durring the weekends it seem's to work out well.

Martial Arts Topics / What Styles do you Blend into your Kali?
« on: September 05, 2007, 10:06:28 AM »
It seem's like I run into alot of people that blend their Kali into something and use that instead of Empty hand Kali..

Example

I use Kali FootWork, Concepts, Stick Work and Some Dumog but instead of the empty hand I go with Switch Boxing, Some Aikido and then BJJ for the ground work...

For Stick and Knife Just Kali

And I was wondering if anyone here practices Kenjutsu?

So...Just wondering what everyone here blends

`I am not that old (34) but I have noticed some work out's with weights will tend to hurt certain part's of my body...

RALOL...    :-o
No you didn't!  I'm 34 y/o and I was avoiding posting on this thread.  Now you've done it...  Does this mean I am in the old guy catagory now???

Back to topic.

There are a lot of great workouts out there.  I have never been one to take a note pad and track the amount of weight I lifted this week or that.  The biggest thing I have learned over the years is to really Listen to my body.  Keep change in my routine every few months as a constant and mix it up.

I hit the gym for weight training about 4-6 days a week for about 45-90 mins (depending on the muscle group).  I run no less than 10 miles a week broken up over 3-4 days (I run each time with 20-40lbs in my pack and hit some hill scrambles along the way).  I work explosive movements (sprints, twists, shadow boxing movements, push-ups, etc. with T-band resistance), mix in some bike here and there.  I also go to MMA's classes 2-4 times a week and we hit some fight cardio as part of the class (about 5 mins of burn out conditioning - ie burpees, side steps, high knees, quick feet, crunches, shadow dox, repeat, repeat, etc).  I also teach/share knowledge in group and private sessions.

_____

There Maxx, now your not the only 34 y/o to join in.

Great thread...  I always study the ways of the old - Just makes damn good sense! 8-)

Oh..I never said we were that old...34 is still a good young age..now 36...That's All down Hill LOL!    :-D

`I am not that old (34) but I have noticed some work out's with weights will tend to hurt certain part's of my body..More in the wrist area  :|    I started to move to a  weightless Circut  work out that has been taking some of the stress of my shoulder and wrist.

Here is a example

I do about 6 to 10 set's of these and it seem's to be going well with my age..with no rest between the sets

11 push ups on Knuckles or incline Then after a few sets of these I will switch to 20 Dips

30 crunches on the last 10 I condition my stomach with soft to hard blows

Switch to 20 leg lifts

Jump up and do 10 each arm of Bulgarian squat curls

Then finish off the set with 30 jumping jacks..

So if you go along for the 10 sets you would have finished with about 100 push ups or if you switch off you get out around 70 push ups or more and about 60 dips

About 300 Crunches

200 leg lifts

100 each arm Bulgarian Squat curls

300 jumping jacks

I noticed when I switched up my work out to this..I did not hurt myself as much..You are weight training and getting cardio in at the same time..I also noticed that I started losing alot more weight and am getting alittle more tone and harder..I also mix in some other types of work outs but not as heavy as I used to..

When I was in my 20's I could lift a truck..My max bench press at 28 to 29 was almost 300lbs now my Max bench hurts my shoulder roter cuff and my wrist..So I just had to modify how I went about things...I only will bench press about 100lbs ten times.

Belive it or not..The work out I am using I got from different cultures warriors that trained...I took some Spartan stuff, Samurai  stuff , And Chinese ..I mostly took their idea of how to train when a Warrior gets alittle older..They all had the idea that you should give the inner joints and tissue a break for a few seconds

I also do burst runs..With weights in a back pack..Not long hauls..Just from a stand still to a hard cook out and then stop..Then another hard cook out then stop..I got that from Spartan training...Now I am not talking about the 300 stuff..The real Stuff..

You can find the Spartan Work out ( NOT 300 Work Out) at Barnes and Nobles..

The idea of this work out that I mentioned was developed to not put constant strain on your joints for to long..And when it was alomst to much..You were switching and doing something else and given that joint or tissue time to breath..So Roter Cuffs don't get blown out and wrist don't strain under the pressure of heavy weights to long..

Get old can be great and getting old can suck.

Now mind you these are not the only things I do..I do some back excersise ..Very light good mornings..And if you keep your head look forward and lift one leg while doing push ups it works the lower part of your back while you are doing them..It's not super work out but gives you enough on the lower back so you don't hurt yourself...Weight Shadow punches are good to..I keep everything in the realm of reality when it comes to my body..

It was actually pretty awesome. I sent you a e-mail with a invite but I never heard back from you. We actually did something rather stupid. We started going over some strikes and what not and then some how with out protection it went live..No gloves, No Mask no nothing,..I don't know how that happend  :|  I walked away in the end with a big Lump in my chin from getting hit in my chin..I took a side throat shot...My left thumb got so jammed that I thought it was broken and finally my fingers felt like cheese..The other guys had some of the same if not worse..I tunred my friends body into Hamburger meat..But on the serious..Very, very, very Stupid..Even the other guys don't even know how we got into that mode..In the end we laughed around the BBQ..Putting ice on the wounds, Tiger balm and other healing aids and started laughing...I broke the silence with  "Man, That was pretty stupid of us" Then everyone errupted in laughs..Goodtime though..I blame the movie 300 for it!!!

having another one in 3 months though..Your welcome to come!

362
I also thought the finally fight looked alittle like slapp boxing with sticks. The "Champion" did not even use any footwork. He just walked forward and slapped the guy with the sticks. I was also alittle more impressed with the American Cage fighter guy because it looked like he was using more footwork and actually had a Dog Brother style and what I mean about that is he hit the guy like two times and then closed the gap to grapple him and then then guy looked mad and made a stink. Over all I give the show a 7 out of 10 for History of the martial art.

I find after doing benchpresses to heavy my Rotator Cuff's hurt to..Not with push ups..Just bench presses..and if I skip weights totally and do weightless work out sometimes I feel like I got more out of my hour and a half then I did with weights.

Most Curl work out with a bar hurt and dmg my wrist except those two that I have mentioned..And for my next question.

I found that taking a Day off at the begining of the week (Monday) and then coming into the weights on Tuesday is hard..Almost like I took longer off..Has anyone tried starting off the work out week "Weightless" and then later in the week using weights see a difference?

Maxx,

I've been doing workouts from Crossfit for the past 3 months and I've found them to be great. Olympic weightlifting plus high intensity cardio, gymnastics, and varied workouts. It's not for everyone, but it may be what your looking for. I'm usually in the gym 6 days a week, for no longer than 40 minutes, which gives me plenty of time to get in my martial arts training.

Where do I find this crossfit?

Hey!

Ya man, I have been training for awhile now. I wanted to train at Lester's Martial Arts but the drive was really to far and I would not be able to make it. I train at Sifu/Guru Bud Thompsons Kali studio and Alot of Kali/Silat and Grappling with Sifu/Guru John Lopez..We have been getting into the full contact thing..So ya, I have been super over training..I am trying to recover from some serious brusing all over my body and my right hand is missing skin hahaah But my goal is to fight at a gathering....And I will shop from a Dog brother instead of someone else, thats for sure!

The bone breaking rattan..Well I have several rattan sticks and a set of Komegong(Spelling) but the ones I practice with for rattan are rather hard and thick and I don't know if it is wise to use them on another human while going full contact..They are not that far away from being as hard as Komegong..I have another set that is lighter and not as thick..Still hurts like a mother but wont seriously damage anyone or kill them on impact.

Thats why I asked about the style of sticks.

In my study of Kali I never knew this..Kali warriors wore armour?!!!
Their armour looks like something like a cross between something chinese and something European

And I never knew about the weapon called the Moro Barong

Do you fight with it the same was as stick and knife?

That was very helpful..I read that all and really liked it. I agree with Quality Versus Quantity..I read in one of Bruce Lees books "Expressing the Human body" that even he mentions only do weights that you can do with out struggle..If it happens to be a 20 or 25 lbs curl then so be it..I also noticed that before I would lift weights and lift weights and keep going higher and higher and I always felt weak. When I started Fighting arts and dropped my weights down to stuff I can handle and also picking up explosive work outs , I found myself getting actually alot stronger and having more energy..Except when I blow myself out and work out 7 days a week..By taking your guys advice and taking that day off..It really helped me..

I can say the first two shows are gonna be HOT..First one is Thai and the next is Escrima and I am looking forward to the PANKRATION but I am not really looking forward to the savate or the Krav Maga..I seriously think they should have choose a wicked form of Kung Fu or something else.

388
Not into doing the steriods and I saw that show on TLC...The guy who's arms exploded..Blah..That guy is a freak and has some serious self hate going on..Not my thing ...]

200 supps a DAY?!  That can't be good for your kidneys..I know I take alot of them but most of mine are to boost the recovery rate of training and to advance my health..I don't take anything that would cause a steriod like effect..

Most of them like I said AID in the recovery rate and help boost my already GODLIKE  Immune system ahahah

Though I have heard that combining several Supps can lead to a home made steroid and I know when I take DHEA  I do almost godlike things

Crap..Crafty!

I have been seeing some of these things you mentioned in me.

Dark Circles under my eyes for starters and I also get super grumpy and pissy when I can't work out or train..I push myself to far, I have been told..One of my friends told me, I was addicted to the high that working out gives me...

Here is a example of it..My right tendon in my left hand is swollen from getting hit durring Live Kali stickfighting..My right hand is scabbed up from getting hit durring kali, My left knee is in agoney from Grappling and dumping ppl down and also one of my left toes feels like it has frost bite lol!

But I keep training on this....From what it seems like is I am going to far and need to rest..But when I take a day off I get pissed and angry..And almost feel like I am wasting a day and actually get depressed lol!

I know it sounds stupid but I am serious.

I train 7 days a week and tonight I was trying to do a basic intro into some Kali simple stuff not too heavy..All Weightless..Dips, Push ups, Crunches while to the conditioning punches in the stomach, Jumping jacks and then finishing off the sets with 60 more push ups..And then I felt weird..I started doing hand strikes on my bag and getting my movement down.Grabbed my stick and started doing strikes and movement high speed and then I felt like Crap..I got nausea and started getting weaker and weaker..So I tried to shake it off..And kept trying to go and it was no use..I was done....Is this a sign of "Fool...WAY TOO MUCH!!!!"  ??

397
He wants to know how you join Dog Brothers if you live NO where near the DOG brothers and there is no Dog Brothers in his area...I told him you have to fight at a gathering I belive and I told him you can fly in but then I remembered that he is broke along with his brothers that practice Kali.

398
BTW I should mention if you have any ideas on suppliments, I can't handle the ones that make you get rapid heart beats or any of that stuff.

399
I am looking for a good suppliment to pick up that gives some good results. I currently weight train along with my Kali and I am taking the following Suppliments (Mens multi  Vitamin, Glucosamine Sulfate, Natural Fish Oil, Extra 500mg of Vitamin C, 500 Mg of L-arginine, 25 extra MG of Zinc, Dhea every now and then, Protein Shake and added to the protein shake Liquid Aminos) I can tell that my power has picked up alot and I am able to either just slam ppl to the ground and go from a Jujitsu guard where they have their legs around me..To where I can just shoot up with ease to a squat on the flats of my feet and lift a person from the ground and just slam them on their back..But I am looking for any other advice with things to try or to stop using...And along with any other work out advice..I do alot of explosive work outs..Alot of Fast and hard...And then I will take a day and just max out..Like heavy dead lifts and I noticed that the dead lifts are really helping me pick someone up from that Guard and slam them...But I want to get stronger...So anyone has any good suppliments to take along with any power workouts?    :-D

Ha! that's a great quote Sun_Helmet,. Too right!!

Also, Maxx,
Teachers that sell the whole "secrets of the ancients" and "effortless death touches" etc etc are still just snake oil merchants, and humans in general love the idea of getting something for no real effort, especially if the ego feels good about itself. It's a no-brainer that a street fighter will kick the ass of a martial arts student with no experience in the real world, however "cool and deadly" the techniques that they have been sold. You are right that it's a shame that people think they have something when they don't, and that this illusion could get them really hurt.
However, If both opponents are not afraid to fight, i suspect the one with better skill (including deception) and technique will prevail, don't you?
Seems like you need some high quality training partners to push your skills even higher.......

I totally agree with you...If they are both willing to fight the one with the more experiance and skill will win. Unless the other gets in the punchers chance and that's always out there lurking for you no matter how bad ass you think you are.

The guys I train with are good but I spend 6 to 7 days a week training or lifting weights or building explosive muscle..Or working on foot work...By no means am I the greatest NINJA   to walk the earth and alot of my stuff needs work..Like my BJJ needs some work...But I do think I am in the right state of mind.

I never belive for a min my crap don't stink and when I walk I know the earth does not split under foot. I am a very humble fighter and really want to attend the next Gathering to get my ass kicked proper lol!

Then I will then have walked with Warriors!!!!
