Correct.  Lately, I've been training with a guy from SBG back when they still did sticks.  He does mention that a lot.

Brandon is from Lloyd Irvin's camp.  He has a good BJJ game, and some Muay Thai/Boxing and all the standard stuff.  I'm not sure if he uses FMA, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't.  (Also, I didn't realize he was Pinoy.  I'll have to cheer for him more)

I've been told, and maybe this is heresay that Randy Couture uses elbow destructions because Matt Thorton showed him them back when he first got into MMA for use against Vitor Belfort.  That could be an Oregon thing though (they both being from there).  At one point, Matt Thorton had a higher respect for FMA (but he's still crazy!).

Hey Dog Greg,

Aren't you on the video? If so, I'm impressed with your knowledge of FMA!  You're one guy I want to meet, and see where you've taken your art since the video (2004 right?)

I posted in the members area that I'm fighting next weekend for the FCFF in Portland in my first amateur mma fights.  I have some Kali Tudo in me.  Most of my PFS buddies have noticed.  Any suggestions about what to do?  Hit me up with an e-mail!

Much respect to you!

PS.  Capoeira has a stick system.  I saw it while I was training with them, I don't know much about it, but it was pretty rudimentary, and mostly based off musical beats (using them as instruments to the song, ie. caveman strikes to a beat).  I'll look into this again a little more.  Oh, and I've been known to join FMA stick strikes with a Capoeira kick (because it's the only thing you really could do if you swung hard and carried through).

Hey Ryan,

I've trained in Capoeira and DBMA.  There are similarities between the footworks, but not as similar as you would think.  The way I was trained in it, I actually had no pentrating steps, except on a teap like kick (I forgot what they called it because it's been a long time) See my post in the member section about this.  I think that's why my Kali Tudo has entered into my footwork so easily.  I'm similar to Guro Lonely in that I'm a footwork (counter fighter) based fighter.  Interestingly enough, when I was using a Mark Hatmaker drill, I actually pulled off a Capoeira kick has a counter to a Teap which surprised everyone.  I think Capoeira has application in certain areas such as a surprise attack, or angola Capoeira is another area I'd like to explore more (ground based attacks).  Frank Shamrock has been known to use a variation of a Capoeira kick to defend from the ground with a standing opponent and Mark Hatmaker's material uses a similar kick and a defense from a Capoeira position.  One kick I find highly useful is called S-batito.  It's basically on all fours then transferring weight to one side of the body (hand and foot) and using a cartwheel like whip to kick across the body which ends you up at standing.  E-mail me sometime.  Maybe, I'll make a video of the similarities.

Top Dog has been known to fight single stick vs double stick and win.  I don't think his opponent is going to call him a fool.  As far as closing and finishing, that's effective and your style too!  I know Sifu Paul Vunak also teaches this approach.  So no worries.  Use what works and don't forget that you're more important than any style!

Martial Arts Topics / Single Stick
« on: March 15, 2006, 06:56:55 AM »
A lot of Gathering fights are single stick.  Doing either single or double stick only will make your game that much weaker.  Don't feel bad about using single stick.  Your more likely to have weapon about that length than two.

Martial Arts Topics / Shrimping
« on: February 20, 2006, 01:54:59 PM »
Shrimping is a move used to get out of the guard.  I'm trained in Shamrock Submission Fighting so my shrimp is different than most people's I think.  In fact, I had to do my shrimp in front of Frank Shamrock (I had previously trained with SBG) and I think he thought I was nuts.  The way I was taught from FS is two different ways either: start on side with fingers touching feet in a C like position then extend through your lower back using your legs and arms to push out, or start in an extended position and crunch yourself into the C position.

No worries, Potts.  I actually posted a similar post in the members area about 1 or 2 years ago.  I was really bad at ground, now I have a solid ground game.  It just takes time.  You'll get there.  I remember, because I kept giving my back.  You'll get it, and know that I was there too.

Hey, I've got Kali Tudo also.  But, I do know that Trigg 101 and 102 are named after MMA Fighter Frank Trigg who trains down at R1 where Crafty trains also.  So it's stuff that he picked up from Frank Trigg.

Hey, I'll tell my brother you liked it.  He did some of the animation on it (in the credits he is).  He saw me watching some of RSF 1 and it reignited his want to train.  Woof!

Frank Shamrock mentioned you used to train with him, he had very nice things to say about you when I trained with him.  Just thought you'd like to know : ).

Martial Arts Topics / Possible reason for sword use
« on: December 22, 2005, 01:32:31 PM »
It seemed to me (I have the staff DVD) that the person did try to use it like a stick, but all that training relating to a sword made him revert back to it in what Guro Crafty calls, "an adrenal situation".  Basically, you fight like you train.  So the move he had cultivated was a slash against his opponent at close range (which would have worked had the weapon been edged) and I believe he was trapped into the clinch game into the ground.  So the main thing to remember is, what you train you will fight.  Bruce Lee once said in Return Of The Dragon, "If it helps you take care of yourself, you should use it."  Just keep the big picture in mind.
