Woof Guro Crafty, I noticed in a previous post there was some thought to holding the gathering at a different location. Has that changed or is Raw still the intended location?
Really hope the foot is healed and I can do this one comming in June!

Woof Mike, I strongly encourage you to go and get into a gathering! I know you've been training for a number of years and I'am quite sure your skills are up to par.
I have fought in two gatherings, with min. group type or serious sparring activity. My teenage son has been my biggest training partner.......Mostly a feeder and and drill partner weve done some sparring but not a lot, mostly just to get used to seeing a stick at real time speed comming at you and looking for opertunitys so that, I might reconize them in a fight.
visualization I think can carry you pretty far. My best suggestion is to work on your conditioning, do either tire work or bag work with your stick....and remmember at the gatherings, its a fight most of all.
If things go bad for you with the stick you can always change tactics and take it to the ground.
Maybe most importantly is not "how well" you do in your fights but what you learn and come away with that counts the most.
Fighting in a gathering is a huge growing and learning experience.......plus you get to meet a great group of guys who are out there having fun beatin the crap out of each other with no ill regard for each other what so ever. ITS AWESOME!!!!  GO DO IT!

Woof, I agree this was the worst UFC card I've seen in awhile. I was disappointed to have bought it.
I was sorry the Ortiz /Shamrock fight didn't last longer, though I think Herb Dean made the right call in stopping the fight.
Had it been any other bout no one would have said boo about that call. during the fight and from the angle we saw the elbows come down it looked to me like Shamrock was knocked out......just the same he was not defending himself.
The TS VS. A.A. fight was a total bore fest, I agree also that for A.A. the leg kick was the ticket and why he stopped it I will never know.
Neither did he fight like a man who wanted to win, esp when it came to the last round.
Silvia did enough to win.....thats about it. My opinion here is with the small gloves and the size of these guys no way should this fight have gone to a decision.......bottom line neither fighter wanted to committ to stepping into and delivering a good hard shot......A boring sparring match was the end result.
I have been hoping for the Lidell  vs. silva fight for some time.  A very intresting match up to say the least.
I don't think they come any tougher than Silva.

Woof, I think the title of this thread is appropriate. I too just want to take the moment and post a heart felt thank you to Pretty Kitty and Crafty for another fine gathering.
Your work and effort to put on these events is greatly appreciated, and much benifit to all of us who attend and participate.

It was great to see everyone, and renew old friendships, and a chance to watch some great fights as well as fight some great fighters.....and some really great people as well.
If any of you that read this forum have an idea of attending a gathering and or particiapting I fully encourage you to do it. I could by no means begin to put to words, what really goes on there, its much more than just guys getting together to fight(that too), but the comaradire, friendship and respect, the learning and growing as a fighter and human being is beyond words.....I encourage you to come see for yourself.
Again to PK and guro Crafty Thanks again!!

Woof Ryan, As Crafty mentioned, I have witnessed some alumin. blade matches at previous gatherings.
So I'am fairly certain you can get a match If you so desired. My caution to you might be that, in order to get a match like this you may have to fight a very experienced fighter.
I also just caution you to consider that fights at the gatherings are just that, they are full out fights.
I got rocked pretty good by some punches and kicks in a previous knife fight.
I would suggest that you becareful what you ask for   Hopefully you will after the knife fights have a good long day of stick fights ahead of you and not a trip to the ER.

Have a great gathering and Hard fighting to all the combatants!!

Woof VTAC, I will take a stab at your question, and hope that others will also. I have been to two gatherings so my experience is limited to say the least. I watched in my first and fought in my second.
My suggestion would be to work alot on footwork(mobility) and defense like your roof blocks and that kinda thing. Idea being....be mobile to get out of the way of whizzing sticks and defense to block any that you cant get out of the way of! Reason being, at the gatherings its all out and they hit very very hard no holding back, that is of course unless you have your opponent hurt then you obviously dont want to send him to the hospital. Though that happens too........
Train with some light weight sticks or padded sticks type stuff, it will still probably hurt and that will give you some idea what to expect. Adrenalin fear and all that happy intense stuff will carry you a long way.
These guys are great and they will bring you right in. Theres a great sense of comaradrie among them ,so i recommend you do it.
Besides if you get there and  decide its a bit much no one will say the less of you if you decide not too fight. Its all good and a great time. Not to mention a great learning and growing experience. Go for it!

Woof Guro Crafty, Iam sure this has probably come up on more than one occasion and i looked for a specific thread pertaining, but could not find one.
I have had this burning question. To nut shell it .....What does it take to make "DOG BROTHER"?
I know that there are progressive ranks along the path IE:dog, c-dog and dog brother.
Iam under the impression that fighting in the gatherings IS a requirement please correct me if iam wrong......I however dont believe this is the onley requirement.
What else do you look for in choosing and advancing guys along the path of becomming a full on "dog brother"
Hope this is taken and asked in the respectful manner in which it was intended. TIA for your time and consideration.

Martial Arts Topics / purchase a knife
« on: July 23, 2004, 01:01:09 PM »
Woof all, I thank you all for your recent posts, I really enjoy reading and hearing from others about the blades that they like, carry, dislike and all that goes with it.
I have been looking at blades online for sometime and realize esp. now that there are about a bazilion to chose from......It is nice again to hear from everyone gives an education and helps to prevent one from buying a dud!! It is my hope that this thread continues and the education process grows.
Two weeks ago I went to the local gun shop because they have a nice selection of knives there and wanted to look at some first hand.
I think i cut my finger on the kershaw that nazmi talked about. it was lightning fast and sharp. I cut my finger when the blade flew open and the tip caught the edge of my third finger(closest to my little finger) nothing serious just a nick.
I did buy a spyderco that day its a centofanteIII.  It is a ok knife nothing to write home to mom about.
There are however some issues that i have been dealing with concerning a folding knife and thus my quest for a personal knife that i can carry and count on in a time of crisis continues.
For example.....the kershaw, I cut "myself" opening that knife even though it was fast......what happens if i have to open it for real, real fast? and so goes the issue of the folder can i get it out and open in time, or will it be laying on the ground still closed  as a high adrenal state unfolds?
Last weekend i saw a nice neck knife of good quality which was not onley fast out of the sheath but very sharp and had a great griping design.
To make mention of the knife it was a emerson la griffe.
Sooo.......having said all of that  my focus of now has kinda turned to something more of a fixed blade design thats conceals nicley is light enough to carry without being constantly aware of, and functional to use.
Thanks johnny for your post, is there some place i can look at Al Polkowski knives, i tried a name search but was onley able to come up with a few sporatic pics. here and there......evidently his knives are in high demand as lots of places were out of his knives. i would like to look at his knives closer and the sheath you described.
As i close this rather long post i would again like to thank all who have shared, and hope that it continues, its great checking out all the blades and learning in the meantime!

trifletraxor, Iam a member of the dbma, may i ask what you are looking for with the dbma..... If its just the vid lessons, i would say sure its worth the seventy five dollars, but then your onley getting a fraction of what the dbma is all about.
I have been a member for almost a year now and will surley re-new my membership, but iam into it for much more than the vid lessons.
By much more, i could list various and many things not all of which are martial arts related, though "to walk as a warrior for all your days" is defiently one of them.
Why dont you post more about yourself and what your all about and maybe you will get more feed back as to if the dbmaa is for you.

Woof, I was at the local wal-mart today and was looking at a low budget Gerber folder. It had a thumb action opening on it that was really stiff, the lock seemed really solid. It was very sharp always a plus to me.
I didnt have any intention of buying the knife just checking it while i waited for my wife. :?
However it made me wonder is there a particular brand that have a really easy smooth opening action, that would lend itself nicley for something that might be needed in a high adrenal type situation?
Iam sure there are, the question  I have is which ones are they? Lots of feed back on this would be greatly appreciated.( favorites ect.)
Iam also very aware that some of the folders are made pretty much with self defense in mind.
So iam thinking opening action would also be a design feature.

Woof, I really like the idea of acknowledging the hit, kinda like in a point karate  tourney. After all we are all members of the same tribe here and from what i can gather via the net and all its chatter. i percieve all to be honorable guys who wont allow your egos to get into the way of making each other better.
Besides the clashes should be quick and short (in and out ) anyway, the onley problem i can see with this is the other attacker and the ambush, being multiple opponent situations. FIGHTERS BEWARE.

« on: June 23, 2004, 05:15:46 AM »
Woof guro crafty, I would suggest that the players be put on a honor system, in that they acknowledge a good shot maybe by pointing to the place they got hit before continuing.
that way we can see the realistic aspect of what happend and all players can get ample time playing.
Not to say you have to acknowledge every little nick, but i think most of us can tell honestly weather weve been hit "good" or not. kinda like keeping score against yourself. If both players kill each other simotaniously(at the same time)  both acknowledge each others hits and maybe the guy who was hit first points to  his opponent .
Watching from the crowd in nov.In some fights  i couldnt tell what was going on and didnt get much out of it.

woof stick grappler, i checked out your site.....started to read down the thread....extremly long  .
echanis appears to be a hot topic in some circles..... with a lot of the same martial arts chatter weve all grown to love......is he legit.....no hes not...yes he is ...no...yes...no..blah blah
Personally i never had much trouble believing his legitamcy, back in the day, he was getting a lot of press coverage.
judging by the way he died i would have to say/ to say the least lots of others believed in his legitamcy as well.
As for the book....though i have no desire to sell it, iam almost sorry that ohare has decided to reprint it.  I kinda have a mixed thought on it....wont lose any sleep over it though, and i suppose if its as good as some beleive it will be a benifit to the art of combat knife fighting.

« on: June 09, 2004, 04:17:12 AM »
Woof guro crafty, I basicly had a ques. or two and instead of starting a new thread decided to stick my ques. here....seemed like as good a place as any, since the ques. pertained to dbma and walking as a warrior....
I was watching the grandfathers speak video yesterday.....seems i get something good/different from that video every time i watch it, but anyway.
In one part of the video guro Inosanto was doing a demo with another guy(name escapes me) but they were counting strikes as they were demonstrating them, what caught my attention and made me wonder was that a good number of these strikes were actually thrusts. maybe 60-70% not sure but it seemed like a lot of thrusts.
what made me wonder was do you consider dbma more a stick style than a blade style?
I guess what iam wondering about is the lack of thrusts in dbmaa.
Would you comment on that for me?          tom

Woof stick grappler, Are you serious about the that book getting 150.00 dollars on ebay?
I bought that book in 1980-81 and paid 7.95 for it. it still has the price tag on it. Its been sitting in my closet all this time.
I remmeber back then reading some things about echanis in soldier of fortune, and things like that.
If memory serves me he was shot down in a helicopter in in nicaragua i believe he was body guarding the nicaraguan pres. at that time or training their military. (not sure) long time ago and iam getting on in years
Anyway one pic. i remmeber of him in particular was of him with a jeep running over his abs as he lay on the ground.

Anyway.....I bought that book around 80-81  hmmm......banned? again...anyway I got it out of the archives and was leafing thru it. just wondered who has seen it or knows of mr. echanis and thoughts on the book, its worth as a training tool that kind of thing?

Woof, milt and K both take the pipe and crafty chooses the knife. Milt even goes so far as to say if he were attacked by a pipe he would bust out his knife.
So iam assuming we think legaly that being attacked by a pipe is
grounds for defending ourselves with a knife. I agree both are deadly weapons.
Question to those who would choose the pipe over the knife, which one are you more likley to have in your possesion?
Question again, to what extent do we use either weapon esp. when placed in a high adrenal condition.
Ok one more ques.. If taking of a life is necassary/justified which way would we deem most humane? by stick or by knife? personally i think knife.
thanks K for the link i havent seen that website yet i will be looking at it more soon. that knife is very similar to the emerson at least by design, the blade being a little smaller.
which brings me to my final question of the day. I hear talk of legal blade limits/sizes.......is there a place to check that? Iam now in wonder as to
the legal blade size for ohio/never gave it much thought before :?
By the way....the fight that occured where the guy was hit with the pipe was a scheduled event. Well from what i was told a drug deal gone bad. So i assume all players could have brought their weapons of choice.

woof, your right milt neither do i lay in bed at night and dream of slashing away at a bad guy.
However.....heres a question that kinda goes with this thread, Would being attacked by a guy with a lead pipe justify the use of a knife for self defense?
Reason for the ques. is i know a guy who got his jaw split in half tuesday night by a pipe. darnedest thing he was hit somewhere in the side of the head/face area, but his jaw split in the cleft of his chin. they put a plate across the front of his jaw to hold it together. pretty seriously broken.
Never say never milt.
guro crafty, i was really impressed with the emerson knives they seem to be made of great quality i have to retract what i said about that krambit vid on the guy demo opening it. it was on the emerson site that i watched it.
I showed my wife a emerson  i liked "the tactical persian folder" she understands my need for such things   anyone care to critic that knife for me, please feel free. It is rather large but the handle looks like something you could hold onto. comments please!!
I notice that a lot of blades have a partial serrated edge, that kinda scares me in that it looks like a pain in the butt to sharpen.  any comments on that?

Woof all, i have for the past couple of days enjoyed looking at the different knives and manufacturers. I appreciate the links and such.
I have noticed what seems to be a common link between makers and that is the small folder with a average 3inch blade even smaller. Iam geussing thats the in vogue style of the times?
I dont really care to carry anything big and weighty in my pockets just seems to bother me and make me uncomfortable, though my first thought was a large folder say at least a 4inch blade.
Reason being it would be easier to reach out and touch some one with plus the extra weight  would make it a better slicer/hacker.
I  do at present time carry a small folder its just a cheap knife but razor sharp. schrade badger.
Guro crafty made some good points though that caused me to think about this knife. for one and in so stating iam again asking......the knife is terribly stiff in the opening action and under stress would take some time to open.
Is there a knife out there that has a good quick opening action in its reputation?
i watched a short vid clip of a guy taking a crkt krambit out of his pocket/ he had it open and in action right out of the pocket. very impressive.
Is that char. of the crkt knives?
In closing the short blades really give me a lot of intriguing thought, i can envision a lot of grabbing and cutting/ also seems a little dangerous esp. going knife on knife if that were to be the case.  thoughts anyone?
please post....iam in search of the perfect personal  blade......my baby 8)

woof righthooker, i certainly know the feeling of living in a fma waste land. Ive struggled to find quality ma here where i live also. thats kinda how i got involved with the dbma.
About a year ago i ordered the real contact series they are very good and iam sure you will enjoy them and get tons out of them, a great way to get started.
I also joined the dbmaa which i totally recommend! there is so much stuff on the members site and a great way to get further and deeper involved.
Be careful though this thing has a real tendency to grow on you....
i had to go to the november gathering and in the days following had the true privledge of training  with guro crafty.
we are in the planning stages now of going back for the summer gathering iam even giving consideration  of entering.....so you can see what its done to me!! :D  anyway iam loving it!!
I think you will be able to find a seminar in your area  or somewhere close. i will leave that up to guro crafty and some of the other guys....but what iam thinking maybe logisticly speaking toronto or new york might be your ticket.  there is  iam thinking  dog brothers martial arts in both those areas.     tom

woof right hooker, since youve been waiting a couple weeks for your sticks, its my suggestion that you send pappy dog a email, asking about your order. once they are shipped you should get them in a day or two.
by the way i see your from somewhere near north east ohio/nw penn.
i believe there is some sayoc kali inst. in penn.  maybe you could check that out. they also have a website simple search for sayoc kali should get you there.                   sb

woof eyepoke, hopefully you surfed around this website? did you notice that dogbrothers martial arts have training videos?
the real contact stick fighting series is an excellent series for solo training and getting started.
from there i will just conclude and say the journey begins!!
if you really want to learn stick fighting the dbmaa is where its at.

woof all, its my opinion that if your willing to take the time to make a post, then you should be accountable for what you post and at least be willing to stand behind your post. in other words register and post under some name, preferably one you can be identified with. why not?   sb

Martial Arts Topics / about Atillo Balintawak and Balintawak history
« on: January 19, 2004, 04:09:28 AM »
woof all, i have been reading this thread for longer than i care to remmeber, and have now reached the point where i have to interject my two cents. thats about all my interjection is worth! anyway......
i met Atillo at the november gathering he was a very nice man and i enjoyed talking with him. he shared with me his photo of his father and the rest of the balintiwak clan, so i have no doubt that he was part of that group. i dont think many of you will dispute that either?
i have seen the photo of his fight which seems to be so much in question and it appears to me that he regardless of the outcome had the courage to engage in a fight with no protective gear esp no head gear. i think that speaks for itself. how many of you bashers out there can make that claim?
sooo..... my points are, he apperantly was part of at least one of the early balinitwak groups, and he evidently did participate in a full contact match without protective gear. as for the rest of the blah blah blahs i dont see the point.
if a person can study and learn something useful under another what makes the difference what its called? a tool i can put to use is a valuable one, if i cant use it why keep it in the bag.
dog brothers martial arts uses lots of styles to make up the dog brothers system including various fma styles...........i guess the bottom line is consider weather or not theres a possibilty you can learn something from attlio and if not move on. maybe someone else can.    sb
