So, what is the URL of The Times interview?

The Times charge for access to their news site (very controversial at the time, but seems to be working for them), I buy a printed copy everyday because I prefer paper (also it then goes in my Guinea Pigs cage as bedding) :-D

Much better interview with him in The Times last week.  His gun ran out of ammunition, his Major was one of the first people to come to his aide.  Initially he thought his Major was an enemy fighter and tried to shoot him!  When asked if he would have shot his Major he replied "No, I had run out of ammunition."  :-D

Also, with reference to the SA80, the current model in service is the SA80-A2, which has been in general service for about the last 3/4 yrs.  No problems with it at all (apart from you still can't fire it southpaw).

Thought about Abu today.

Myself, C-Full Metal, C-Rogue and Abu were considered to be the 'pack jokers'.  When one of us would do something funny Abu would shout "xxx du bist super!"  We started to do this for my son Dougal when he did something funny.

He did something today that made me exclaim "Dougal! Du bist super!"

Then I remembered who started it, I miss Abu.

My thought go out to his family.

He was a true Brother, always full of energy.  You couldn't help but be happy whenever he was around.

He always had time to speak to you and would go out of his way to cheer you up if you were down.

Sleep well Brother, I miss you.

Martial Arts Topics / RIP Guro Patrick Davies
« on: September 08, 2010, 08:51:57 AM »
It is with great sadness that I inform you that Guro Pat Davies, founder of the Aberdeen Martial Arts Group, passed away late this morning.  Pat had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer over two years ago.  I didn't know Pat very well, but I found his blog about his battle with cancer to be inspirational (http://patsfightagainsttcancer.blogspot.com/) and very revealling about the true nature of a warrior.

Guro Pat was an extended member of our tribe, as an instructor under Guro Inosanto and Erik Paulson, and number of his students have participated in the Gathering of the Pack.

His passing is a loss to everyone who's life he touched.

@GD

Not if you're thinking "I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?".  If he can't do it then does that make the other guy a bigger loser?

I've always thought that intro music can tell you a lot about how the fighter thinks about themselves or their image.  Unfortunately on a lot of the bigger shows the fighters either have limited or no say on their song.

And because this is the fight song thread, I'll raise you a 'Disturbed':

I suppose it would depend on who was using it.  It is a terrible song but I could maybe see Cristiane Cyborg using it  :-D  :-o

Such are the fortunes.  Martial arts have been good to me thus far - I can hardly complain for the occasional setback.  That said, those who have blown out knees, shattered bones, or otherwise messed themselves up severely can no doubt relate.

Loki,

In 2007 I'd bought early flights for the LA Gathering, but when I fought at the Euro Closed earlier in the year (but after I'd bought my LA tickets) I tore my right meniscus. I still came out as I was travelling with Scotty Dog and, now, C-Psycho Bitch and I watched the fights (we actually met when you did your interview for the OP documentary, I was there with Scotty).  I can totally relate to how you must feel, I had to sit out the Euro Open later that year as well.  It was an interesting change watching the fights though, and not having to worry about fighting myself.

Anyway, I hope your road to recovery is quick and that you find activities to keep your skills up.

Colin

p.s I recently bought Stephan Kestings Roadmap for BJJ, nice cameo

A hearty woof to all!  :-)

The Euro was a great event, even though we did feel the absence of Guro C, Guro L did a fantastic job of standing in and representing the Council of Elders.

What can I say, it was a brilliant couple of days, awesome fights and the improvement/development of a lot of the fighters in the space of only a year was amazing!

First up, a big thanks to all my Brothers that allowed me to practice/test my skills, thank you (you all know who you are).

Secondly, a big congratulation to those who were dogged.  The tribe grows stronger and you all inspire me to train harder and smarter for next year!

Thirdly, a big thank you to those of you who helped me and 'C-Psycho Bitch' (nee 'Cat' Lynn) look after our 3 month old baby Dougal, and allow us to 'skip the queue' during our tag team effort to look after him and fight!  For me this was one of the biggest things about this Gathering.  Two Euro's ago when I tore my meniscus the whole tribe helped lift me up (emotionally AND physically), this time you allowed me and my wife to participate even 'around' our son

Finally, a big thank you to Guro Benjamin and his wife Cornelia, without who the event would not have happen.

I've been lucky enough to train some of the KT material with Guro Crafty on a couple of occasions.  With the brief exposure I've had, I've still been able to utilise the ideas and tactics in real time MMA sparring with a healthy degree of success.

I'm looking forward to the future KT products (my pre-order is in ), and would heartily advise all here to check them out.

What about a DVD in which DBMA fighters past and present discuss/teach a technique/concept/tactic/idea/training methodology that has worked for them in the adrenal state? This might be something that Ron shoots a little of here and there at Gatherings/DBMA seminars and then is cobbled together over time.

This is a great idea!  :-D

And maybe a brief interview with the fighter about how they prep physically and mentally for the Gatherings, nothing massively in-depth, more to gain some insight from a wide variety of fighters.

I'd like to see some more of the EH SD/Combative type material  :-)

85
The seminar was fantastic!

As usual Guro Benjamin had a 'short' warm up!  The first hour or so was dedicated to the warm up, where he ran us through exercises for developing power and 'fast feet'.  He had us doing training exercises on aerobic steps!  Definately some new exercises for us to add into our training regimes!

The technical bulk of the seminar focused on two different complementary (or opposing!) structures, the 'mobility game' and stalking.

He rounded off the seminar with his now imfamous 'boogey woogey'  :-D

The movements that Guro Lonely teach in the dvd are very applicable to fighting.  It's easy to grab a stick and just work a few 3*5 rounds of any combination, but the way Guro L cuts right to what is fight effective is what makes it special.  I'd massively recommend it because not only are you getting a workout, your developing the your muscle memory as well.

The way Guro L puts it together most of the exercises can be trained at different levels of complexity.

Does it make you sweat?  Hell yeah!  :-D

92
C-Scotty,

My heart goes out to you mate.  I kinda know how you must feel but I think your grief must run deeper than mine did, after booking my flights to the LA Gathering last year and then having to sit out on the blechers due to a torn meniscus.

I know how hard you trained for this and it's a pity that it had to go that way for you, but I hope that like me you found the oppertunity to sit and watch the fights an enjoyable and educational one.

To all the people who were there fighting, my respect goes out to all of you!   :-)

Looking forward to hearing some good 'warstories'  :-D

I wear mine when I'm doing no-gi training.  They can handle a beating but they are a bit 'short', I wear lycra running shorts underneath them.

I don't see why metalic tape (the kind used for ac work...I think) couldn't be used on the non-conductive sides of the knife. This now temporarily altered blade would offer a little more realism and allow everyone else to follow the flow of the blades.  After your done peal off the tape and use a plastic-safe gunk remover to remove any tape residue.

You'd be taking the knife outside of it's designed function.  You run the risk of either shorting the knife out, or reducing the voltage density and reducing the level of shock the fighters received.  Also, the adhesive of the tape may interfere with the conductivity into the tape.

Sorry, I'm an Engineer
