Sparring/Fighting Gear
« on: May 31, 2003, 08:17:58 PM »
I am a fairly new student to Kali and JKD. I am researching equipment needed for more... "intense" sparring. If anyone has a spare moment, I would appreciate some guidance with brand names, types, etc.

Much Appreciated.

This is a list of equipment that should allow you to train and spar (weapon & open hand) at different intensities. Here it is in no
particular order:

*Head gear: fencing mask, head guard, and heavier helmet--Here is a link to a couple of helmets that I modified for different levels of fighting. www.philelmore.com/martial/helmets.htm
Also, Tripplette makes a very good and affordable fencing mask. A little heavier then the old screen door types that Crafty loves so much, but still very workable. www.triplette.com

*Street Hockey gloves (Hockey gloves are ok, but have limited mobility
IMHO). Batting gloves. Lacrosse gear can be utilized as well.  www.lacrosse.com

*Boxing gloves 10oz - 16oz., head gear, bags etc... www.fairtex.com

*Rattan Sticks (I prefer 31"x1"+  but what ever your comfortable with), Staff,
and quarter staff. (I play around with some synthetic ones as well--Acetyl rod).

*Training knives (rattan/aluminum and rubber).Sharkie makes a good plastic trainers. (see Edges2).

*Aluminum long blade/s (Ginunting, Barong, Kampilan,Bolo etc...) www.edges2.com

*Eye protection.

*Thai Pads, Focus pads.

*Shin pads (if you like), Belly pad.

*Wrist guards (Lameco Int. makes good ones. I have some leather ones with
large metal staples that sit flush in the leather, kind of looks like diamond
plate, that are made for the paper industry that works well- a lot cheaper
too).

*Elbow and knee pads: Soft & hard shell.

*An R4 Rapier with a Dianamo training Saber Blade, and a D4 Dagger with the
extra strong Blade. We use for Kali Fencing.
Excellent for developing blade awareness footwork and quick
reflexes.  Available from Triplette Competition Arms.
www.triplette.com

*Krabi-Krabong Swords (real and training) if you are interested in playing
some KK. Some of the KK works in real well into the FMA.
Training blade: www.edges2.com
Real blades: Tic & Tac used to sell the real ones but their site has been down the last few times I have been there.

Anyway, this is a some of the equipment I like to carry around.

Thank you for the list.

I have some questions about the knee pads and forearm pads.

1. Does it matter what type of knee pad to use? Can it be volleyball or soccer?

2. In terms of soft shell knee pads, the bands sometimes stretch out and slip off. Can anyone
recommend any brands that keep their shape?

3. I have seen these forearm pads that have fingerless gloves attached to them. Does anyone know
what i am talking about?

I have done extensive testing on a variety of knee pads over the last few years (service connected knee injuries) and and have come to the conclusion that FOX Launch Pro Knee Pad are the ideal fit for me. They are slip on adjustable hard shell pads with a soft shell feel, full range of motion and extremely light (~6oz). I can barely tell I am wearing these and the fit is exceptionally well.

Hard shell is not OK for a DB Gathering.
