What would you consider the bare minimum skills for effective h2h?

Being able to take a punch and a sucker punch. Knowing some ground work because almost every one on one fight I have been in seems to tumble to the ground and I would say knowing how to cover up and throw some good upper cuts and crosses. Most fight I have seen or been in are in pretty close quarters..Bars, Clubs and the like and most of these seem to start with a sucker punch or a punch from behind the head. Clinching is a must as well as being able to throw some good solid elbows and knees with the clinch.

I would say boxing is the bare minimum of hand to hand. Knowing how to throw a strong jab, cross and uppercut, as well being able to defend against those is essential. Elbows, grappling...all should build upon the core essentials.

Distance - know when your too close and can be hit.
Cover - find an Oh Shit/Default cover position.
Striking - practice slaps and elbows. No fists because it's good way to sprain a wrist or break a hand.  No kicks or knees because it means your only standing on one leg.
I don't know how many of them it would have taken to whip my ass, but I knew how many they were going to use. That's a handy little piece of information.

I have never broke anything in my hands hitting someone with fist...But I almost broke fingers slapping someone for a strike.

Experience operating in the adrenal state.

How would you judge operational status in the adrenal state? What does it take, and how long does it take to cultivate that experience? How hard does one have to "spar" in other words? I personally think using live sticks has really changed the game for me, and am glad I was involved with helping the guys up here train for the gathering. But you can't do that all the time :P  There is just no way in hell my body could take it! Is there a happy medium to shoot for most of the time, with live sticks being the occasional reminder that trading blows is not a good idea? How does this translate to experience with empty hands? I have never done any fisticuff type sparring so have no frame of reference. Perhaps I should make it a point to change this?

Well put DP, I second your statement here.  8-)

Maxx, sorry to say but IMHO there are more reasons for me to choose open handed stricking than closed fist.  Worth working on.   Pro's and Con's for both no doubt.  :-)

In addition to DP's reply, I would like to add Mobility / Hard Targeting.

i've enjoyed this thread..

one thing i haven't seen mentioned yet is-cultivating environmental awareness for access to a weapon (or an exit...).
oh, and 360 degrees awareness

unless of course we were talking about one on one "fair" fighting

But you can't do that all the time

you don't have to do it all the time, but getting to the adrenal state even a few times, realizing its there, your mindset in it, your capabilities, and understandings, etc. will give you an advantage over an oppenent who hasn't been there.

Bjung,

That sounds like the makings of a new thread.
