http://dogbrothers.com/store/index.php?cPath=22 The guest instructor will be Grandmaster Art Gonzalez of the legendary Stockton system of Gilbert Tenio known as "Tenio Decuerdas". Many of you may not know either of these names or only may have a vague sense of them. Although in the way of many Filipino masters GM Gilbert Tenio avoided the spotlight, it is my understanding that in that time and place he was known by those in the know-and he was very well respected. If you are lucky enough to have a copy of Guro Inosanto's now out-of-print "The Filipino Martial Arts" you can find him in there. Also, below you will find a brief description by GM Art of his teacher and the system.
If you are like me and you know something of the story of Guro Inosanto's youth in Stockton training with the Filipino masters there in the 60s and 70s and wish you could have been there to taste the feel of the Art fresh from its homeland as Guro Inosanto was, will appreciate that with GM Art you are getting to taste it but one generation removed.
What led me to GM Art was footage of him teaching that someone shared with me. Not only did what I saw resonate with my sense of reality, but-and this is really important-- a lot of it was based upon positions we seek and use in our "Die Less Often" material (DLO being our name for DBMA's material for the interface of gun, knife, and empty hand). This is important. It is not enough that material be good for us to want to pick it up for ourselves, it also needs to blend seamlessly-- otherwise one is left with a hodge-podge of techniques that may be individually good, but do not flow well together. After training with GM Art for a couple of days my initial hunch was confirmed; there is good synergy with what DLO already has and it offers some solutions to problems that are currently difficult for us.
Furthermore, GM Art naturally teaches the technical material in the context of the psychological and physical trickery used by those he calls "the bad boys". Without this sort of understanding one's anti-knife game can have some seriously weak links in it. On the other hand if you experience the deceit, trickery, disruption, and emotional intensity as part of your learning method, in my opinion your survival rate goes up dramatically. This is invaluable!!!
So what will we be covering at this Camp in our three days together?
GM Art will teach whatever he feels like in Decuerdas' gun/knife/empty-hand paradigm. Though our words here about what he will be teaching are few, know that the material will be abundant!
As for me, here is the outline of I will be teaching in my half of things. This is "DBMA Walk as a Warrior for all your Days" material.
MINDSET:
• Surviving knife and gunshot wounds: In DLO situations, getting wounded is a real possibility. Are you happy with your current level in this regard? Know just how much you can survive and solve after the attack can be a TREMENDOUS boost to composure during the attack! This section will be led by Iraqi veteran combat medic "Kaju Dog" who introduce you to how to get started on what for most of us is a glaring gap in our skill set.
• Legal issues: We all have heard of the importance of being aware of our environment, but some of us have yet to realize that this includes our LEGAL environment. Remember it is not a "justice system" it is a "legal system", and the two can be at considerable variance with each other at times! You need to know how to keep track of the laws of your home state and states you might visit.
• Rules of Engagement (ROE) : Of course moral and spiritual issues come first, but knowing the legal issues involved will help you in developing your own personal (ROE). Knowing what your ROE are in advance means you won't have to work them out on the fly while your "primal monkey dance" wants to kick into gear!
• Managing Unknown Contacts (MUC): A good pool player never has to make a difficult shot. Learn how to neuter efforts to set you up.
TIME TO ENGAGE: TOOLS, TACTICS, TECHNIQUES, AND TRICKERIES
• The KALI FENCE- KF Mobile and KF Close Quarter
1: the Arf-ful Dodger frame
2: Initiation and interception from the Kali Fence: specific practical combos to take the initiative in a "Weapon Based Environment" (WBE)
• Reaction from the Kali Fence: the DOG CATCHER: The Dog Catcher is our low diagnostic pick up to handle "primal probabilities first". In our opinion, to be able to improve one's odds against a committed knife attack is a pretty good trick! We like the DC because applying it in the adrenal state requires reading only Right or Left, Down or Horizontal; it is the same whether the attack is armed or empty hand; it can handle angry primal power; it disrupts the attack and serves to establish angle to break off or enter to control of the attacking limb; and it sets up a crafty matrix of options from there.
• We will be looking at DC to: enable running away, firearm access, and/or knife access; establish weapon arm/hand control into some rather crafty disarms and captures.
Please note that we pride ourselves on our ability to teach to all levels. Whether you are just beginning or are further along, I think you will find this camp fun, fresh, and functional. Please rest assured that though there will be lively force on force exercises, no one will be pushed to go beyond where they want to go.
Walking as warriors for all our days,
