Krabi Krabong dvd
« on: April 07, 2005, 06:04:06 AM »
Hi,

I've checked through tthe forum but couldn't see the answers to my questions so I'll post them here.

Could you tell me more about the Krabi Krabong dvd available :-

1) Running Time?

2) What weapons are covered?

3) Is it instructional or part documentary on all the various weapons in the system?

4) Is there only 1 Vol in the series?

5) Is an overview of the complete art (all 9 weapons) covered in the 1 vol?

6) Are there any full contact fights using K.K. on this dvd?

7) What Dog brother tapes/dvd's show K.K. being used against Escima/kali/arnis in full contact bouts?

8) How have you found K.K. compares to kali in effectiveness in these F/C bouts?

9) Is it a more K.I.S.S. system, thus making it extremely effective for modern day combat or does Kali lend itself more to modern day weapons as it covers the use of the knife?

10) What are your other dvd/video title's that cover you blending K.K. with kali? How much are they? Are they still available through your website or budo International?

Who's seen these video's and what are your comments? I really like some feedback guys as to which title's are the best.

Thanks fro your advise.

Woof Adam:

Its late after a busy day, so please excuse the brevity in my answer for now.

1)  http://dogbrothers.com/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=73

2) Single stick, double stick, with reference to the others in the system.

3) Some brief amateur footage of Ajarn Salty training in Thailand; the great majority of the DVD (which contains footage additional to the video btw) is about instruction and fights.

4) At present this is the only volume we have out, but there will be more in the future.  Guro Lonely Dog, (certified under Ajarn Salty who is certified by Buddaiswain Inst of Thailand) teaches KK in the first half of our Los Triques video for BUDO.  There may well be another, but right now our emphasis in on our Kali-Krabi Krabong blend (Los Tri Ques, the Three K's, get it?).

5)  No.

6)  Dog Brothers Martial Arts "If you see it taught, you see it fought."  You betcha.  Btw we prefer the term "real contact stickfighting" in order to distinguish our fighting from the "full contact' tournaments.

7)   The KK with Ajarn Salty.  The Budo "Los Triques" video does not have fights.

8)  Our philosophy is to avoid comparisons-- it is too easy for bad feelings to arise and invariably there are too many other variables anyway.   The fact that in DBMA we have major areas of the system which blend the two should tell you something though.

9-10)

As asked, 9) leads to comparisons.  Each has its place, and the fighters I train and I seem to be having good results with our blend of the two but each man should use what works best for him.  I am unaware of a knife portion to KK.

We have shot and are fairly advanced in editing our upcoming DVDs (release this summer) of:

1) Big Single Stick Los Triques
2) Siniwali Los Triques

These will come after the release of

a) "Kali Tudo"(tm) Volume 1:  DBMA Kali-silat for cagefighting.  This volume will be the first of 2-4 this area of our system.  The material is organized not by skill level (i.e. beginning, intermediate, advanced) but by facets of the fight.  This volume focuses principally upon angular striking crashes.  Subsequent volumes will deal with using Kali in the clinch, against the guard, from the guard, etc

KT (tm) Volume one may turn into a double disc-- we are already at 90 pretty tightly edited minutes and have some more good things to add.

We hope to release KT Vol 1 by the end of April.

b) Staff: for DB Gathering and for the Street

c) Conversion of Real Contact Stickfighting Vol 1: POWER to DVD with additional footage.

I have purchased this DVD and I thoroughly enjoyed it!  However, some friends of mine, and I have been training in stick fighting with the DVD I ordered (Krabi Krabong), and I have some questions.  First of all, we have been doing the beginning drills for a while now.  One thing I was wondering is that we continue to use the style of keeping the stick pointed at the opponent before and after the strike, as was demonstrated in the video.  Sometimes, when I and doing the blocks, if I don't strike hard enough when the stick is coming down, the opponent's stick will make contact with the back stick which is raised a little above my head.  That causes my own stick to hit me in the head.  Is this an acceptable consequence or, and I doing something wrong?

Thank you for your help.

I love this DVD as well. KK is a sword art (no letting your own stick hit your head!), and they aim to keep the pointy end always facing the opponent. A lot of KK revolves around power and you need to be able to meet the power shots with your blocks. I am trying to visualize your block,i'm assuming your partner is coming down with his sticks vertically and you are meeting his strikes with your sticks crossed? You really need to punch out your block a bit (but not like reaching out to block, just blocking with a bit of pop in it when his strikes are about to land) and be able to deliver you counters right after blocking (or kicking simultaneously while blocking)

No, it happening when I have for example my right hand in the ready position with the tips pointed at the opponent.  And the left hand is coming accross to block and oncoming strike.  At the same time, I'm stepping back.  I was thinking that I was holding the ready hand too far forward.

So when the opponents stick is coming in at an angle toward my neck, I'm blocking it with my front stick, however the stick that is up in the ready position somtimes gets hit which makes it bounce back toward my head.

So you are saying that I am not meeting the oncoming stick with enough force.  That is the real issue, and if I did that, I wouldn't have to worry about the stick that is in the raised position?

The stick that is in the raised position, pointing at the opponent; does it serve as any other purpose, other than being ready for the strike?  Is it there for a block also?

Thanks for the help!!!

So when the opponents stick is coming in at an angle toward my neck, I'm blocking it with my front stick, however the stick that is up in the ready position somtimes gets hit which makes it bounce back toward my head.

With double swords/sticks in KK I do not usually cross block. When he attacks with his right hand i block with my left, when he attacks with his left I block with my right switching my stance/lead foot as i step backward

If you are trying to meet all blocks with your lead hand while shuffling back, keeping the same lead forward, I would lower the high chamber of your non blocking hand, and bring that hand lower towards my waist still ready to thrust if need be (or cycle back to strike if needed). try to keep your hand in the starting stance/shell position instead of always in a chamber to strike when defending.
There are positions for your hands when moving forward in the traditional movements that hold the hands in a high chamber for striking while moving forward, and the positions of your hands/swords/sticks are different when moving backwards.

And yes, KK has a lot of met the force energy, so when in doubt, more power in your blocks (without over extending)

OK.  Thank you!

I have been alternating my stance when backing up, but putting my hands in the ready to strike position as if I was moving forward.  I will alter this and lower my hands while backing up.  I wasn't sure if I was supposed to keep the back hand up or not.

I want to make sure that I am drilling the techniques properly so that I don't create bad habbits!

Thanks again for all of your help.

Bjung (a.k.a. Porn Star Dog) has very good KK, better than mine.  I would add only to his sound advice the image that works for me, given to me by a teacher:  Think of a triangle formed by your two hands (roughly, near your hips) and the tips of the stick.

thoroughly enjoy the kk dvd from dbma. in fact its pretty much all ive been working on lately. my kicks still suck though. i like the crashing mentality as well as the different striking method which really whips the stick into the target. highly recommended.
