I should know this, but when is the next gathering?

I've read about a guy name Felix Valencia and was simply just wondering who else has never lost. Anyone?

The main objective of most fighters at the gatherings is not to "win" or "lose" and the gatherings are not set up that way.  The only possible criteria one could use to maintain that he was undefeated would be to have never tapped out, been KO'ed, or had to quit before time was called. With this as the criteria, there are probably scores of fighters who are "undefeated", although most of them would probably never make this claim.

BTW, if I had to choose which one to train, I'd choose both.

Martial Arts Topics / Kendo

I went against a kendo practitioner at one of the gatherings. I used double sticks against his staff. I was very impressed with his ability. I had a training partner who was an accomplished kendo player. He was also very good with the staff.

I also did a bit of foil and sabre in college.

My opinion is that kendo is most applicable to staff or an implement where you will be using two hands.

I think that sabre is more transferable to knife stuff.

Martial Arts Topics / Headgear & Gloves
« on: November 21, 2005, 05:42:38 PM »
After yesterday's gathering, I'm thinking of retiring my 1970's fencing mask, as I'm getting tired of having to wear a wrestling headgear underneath it in order to keep it from cutting up my ears, as well as having it fall off in the middle of exchanges.

Where do I get the type of headgear that most of the guys are wearing these days? How much do they cost?

Also, I need some glove recommendations. I have been alternating between light street hockey gloves and thin bicycle gloves. The hockey gloves seem to give too much protection and don't allow for enough dexterity. Using the bike gloves, on the other hand, sometimes results in my fingers getting mangled which prevents me from using my computer keyboard for a week or two afterwards.

Any recommendations for an 'in between" glove.

Marc:
Fascinating stuff. I applaud your efforts in this area.

Some personal opinions as I was reading through:

I believe open guard (with or without a cup) has some very real applications for the street- possibly even more so than closed guard. However, I believe it must be used much more aggressively than is seen by many BJJ players.

My opinion is that the multiple hits per shift of body weight will usually lose out to the single hit concept as seen in boxing or MT. I will be interested to see how it actually plays out.

While I agree with the validity of using the foot work to force the opponent to overextend or to keep him from engaging, I can see it leading to stalling-related penalties in the MMA realm.

I definitely like the idea of the triangulation/crashing to close into the clinch/takedown range.
Question: Do you feel that this could also be applied to the wrestling/submission grappling competitive arena?

Another question: Can we expect to see Trigg using any of this stuff in future fights?

I?m looking forward to hearing more of your work in this area and to see it?s application in the realm of MMA competitions.

Martial Arts Topics / Knife Strategies
« on: July 01, 2004, 10:05:57 PM »
Having missed the gatherings for the last couple of years, I wasn't aware that multiple opponent knife fights were being done. Since I have been focusing more on the knife than the stick as of late, observing these fights really caught my attention.

Fior those who have done these types of knife fightis, I would be interested to hear some of the strategies you and your partners have used and which strategies you have found to be more workable as well as those that have not worked so well for you.

If anyone would care to share your observations and conclusions regarding strategies and tactics, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Dale
