You guys fought awesome.  There were so many high quality fighters there yesterday!  It was quite intimidating and inspiring!

The Dog Brothers and their fellow fighters are as strong as ever.  The tribe continues to grow!

Woof to all the fighters yesterday,
Russ

Dog Brothers Martial Arts, taught by Raw Dog

Attacking Blocks:

RH1B & LH1B-
(shadow with the mirror and then work it with a partner)

Emphasize crashing nature of the attacking blocks (like a footplayer?. run straight in).

RH1A & LH1A-
(shadow with the mirror and then work it with a partner)

Training ideas- Raw said the he used to have Dog Danny and Dog Rodney do 20 yard sprints with the Attacking Blocks (yelling) and also use follow up strikes.

At the end of class, Raw explained how train with Guro Marc in DBMA showed him how to functionalize all of the training drills he had been doing for years.  He said it also gave him a different focus in all of his training enabling him to progress even further.

Woof,
Dog Russ

Guro Allain "Bong" Atienza will be beginning an Atienza Kali Public class this month (10/2) at the Fighthouse in Manhattan.

122 West 27th Street 2nd floor, New York, N. Y. 10001 (bet. 6 & 7 Ave.)

Class will meet every Thursday from 7-9PM.  The cost is $95/ month.

I highly recommend training with Guro Bong.  The Atienza Kali system is a great place to start or to improve your skills.

Serious students only!  This class is physically demanding.

DBMA Central Park NYC September 24th, 2003

With Dave Matthews playing a free concert on the Great Lawn, the Park was full last night.  We made our way to the usual spot and began our training nonetheless.

Hubud (Left Handed): Metrinome feeds left hand strike and Fighter responds using Female triangle footwork.

The next step is to add in the concept of the Zarconia.  Here is the first step of the DBMA Kali Tudo material.  I demonstrated some of it using the Hubud training as a basis for the footwork and objective.  I had them try to enter with a trap and hit while maintaining the flow of the hubud drill.  This is something we trained at Inosanto Academy DBMA Saturday class- June 2001.

Krabi Krabong- using the off lead.  We worked on combining the proper stick and footwork for this material by shadowing fighting with it at first.  Then we partnered up for some Metrinome training.  From the trapping/ clinch range, we worked some punyo striking.  I asked Agapito to show the PTK Seguida that deals with the Punyo in this range.  He showed his “interpretation.”

Switching to Actionflex, I had them use this Krabi material with Metrinome starting at a more realistic fighting range with the Fighter drawing the Metrinome’s attack.

We finished with some Actionflex sparring emphasizing proper range, use of combinations from last week’s class, the new material, and at all cost…. Avoiding double kills!

Woof,
Dog Russ

NEXT WEEKS CLASS WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY IN CENTRAL PARK- 9/29/03, 7PM.

DBMA 5/24 Notes from PMAA forum written by Sean w/ comments by LG Russ.

Excellent Job Sean!  Let me add in some comments in BOLD type below:

Here is an outline of Saturdays class in Kissena Park
Attendees:

1:00 - 2:30

Footwork on the Hourglass- 3 variations: tap foot, squat, reverse direction (warm-up) 15 minutes

IN ATIENZA CLASS, WE USE THIS DRILL TO WARM UP OUR FOOT WORK FOR 30 MINUTES TO AN HOUR!

Male triangle with leading roof block followed by 1 strike

FIGHTER ADVANCES TO THE POINT OF THE TRIANGLE WITH A ROOF BLOCK AND THEN RETREATS OUT WITH A CAVEMAN STRIKE (SINIWALI).

Lower canines with leading roof block followed by angle 1 strike

WE USED THIS FOOTWORK TO MOVE ACROSS THE FIELD HORIZONTALLY WHILE EXECUTING THE ROOF AND CAVEMAN.

3 Point with Right hand then left hand.  Stessed the importance of knowing how to use the left hand.

THIS WAS A STANDARD 3 POINT SUMBRADA USED TO DEMONSTRATE HOW THE ROOF BLOCK AS WE NORMALLY TRAIN IT IS INEFFECTIVE TO STOP A BAT WEILDING ATTACKER (THIS IS A RANGE ISSUE OF COURSE).

Lameco drill (1st person strikes lower lead leg, 2nd person avoids and attacks back on angle 1)

FIGHTER GOES FOR A KNEE SHOT DROPPING LOW WITH IT AND ROOFS ON THE WAY OUT AS METRINOME USES THE ILLUSTISIMO CROSS-STEP TO EVADE, STEP IN AND RETURN A HEAD SHOT.

Roof block against different weapons. (Headgear used) Started with Soft stick, stick, baseball bat and bo.  Stressed importance of footwork, holding roof block at correct angles and supporting roof block against heavier weapons

THIS WAS DONE WITH THE FIGHTER IN A SET AREA WHILE THE TWO OTHERS RAN AT HIM WITH FULL POWER STRIKES (BASEBALL BAT, RATTAN & STAFF).  THIS REALLY TEACHES YOU TO DEFEND YOUR HEAD WITH THE STICK.... OR ELSE!

Single and Double soft stick sparring, emphasing closing the gap and working angles.

EMPHASIZED TESTING YOUR OPPONENTS REACTION/ RESPONSE BEFORE COMMITING TO A FULL ATTACK.... DRAW OUT THE OPPONENT'S RESPONSE!

-End of class

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS CLASS.  IT INSTILLS A SENSE OF REALITY INTO WHAT SOME OF THE MORE REFINED MOVEMENTS IN OUR KALI TRAINING CAN ACTUALLY BE USED FOR IN A PRACTICAL SCENARIO.
