Recently there was a brouhaha all over the news about some Iranian or Arab student at UCLA who got tasered several (three times IIRC) times after refusing to present ID as requred at the school library after 2300.  The idea that he got tasered three times for some people was incontrovertible proof of police brutality.

As part of my continuing education, I got tasered by Southnark two Sundays ago at the Warrior Talk Symposiium III.  With that sly Mississippi accent of his he tried luring me into it at dinner on Saturday night.  Fearing barfing a large meal I deferred until Sunday.  I had notions of standing which promptyly vaporized when the darts hit me in the chest and I melted to a fetal curl on the floor.  When the five seconds where over I was immediately functioning again.  I rose to my feet without any problem and simulated fighting movements. 

Interesting experience.

According to the Wiki entry:

At approximately 11:30 pm on November 14, 2006, Community Service Officers were conducting routine checks of Bruin ID cards for students in Powell Library. UCPD Assistant Chief of Police Jeff Young said the checks are a standard procedure in the 24-hour library after 11:00pm, when use of the library is restricted to staff, faculty and students.[3]

When Tabatabainejad refused to produce university identification, he was asked to leave the premises.[4] When, according to Young, Tabatabainejad failed to leave immediately, UCPD officers were called to the scene and eventually used the Taser in its "Drive Stun" capacity.[3]

Tabatabainejad was released from custody after being given a citation for obstruction/delay of a peace officer in the performance of duty. According to a press release issued by the UCPD, he was also issued a court date.[5]

In my opinion..
Showing his ID could have prevented the whole tazering event. Even if it was racial profiling, it was just community police he could have showed his ID and made a complaint with the University or whomever is in charge UNTAZED. I dont know what exactly Community Police do but it is clear they dont really have much power thus the reason for the UCPD being called in, so by not complying with two different levels of authority, he brought this on himself.

I work on a UC campus as a Public Events Manager and can shed some light on the Community Police. CSO's (as they are known) basically carry radios, escort students, report suspicious activity, and tag along with the UCPD on occassion. They can't physically lay a hand on you, can't arrest you, can't mace you, can't detain you, etc.

Basically, you can walk away from them and there is nothing they can do about it.

Being "hassled" by the police is generally a part of the college experience regardless of color. More than anything (and this is my bouncer experience talking) college kids tend to get themselves in trouble by acting like idiots i.e. not following rules, being drunk in public, talking back to police, and generally not backing down in situations they see as "intruding on their basic civil rights". From all appearances, this kid could have saved himself a ton of trouble by calmly explaining the situation or at least leaving the premises.

I could get into a whole other discussion about "kids these days" but that would keep me up for the rest of the night

Thanks for the explanation, so basicly they are just a security guard, Im not knocking them I used to be "just" a security guard in Waikiki for the Business Improvement District. I think most citys with tourist attractions have them.  We held no power all we could do is ask people to stop and / or call police for assistance.  Most of the time it was just a fun job, we patrolled Kalakaua & Kuhio Ave and assisted tourists by providing them with all kinds of information when asked or if we noticed that they looked a little lost as well as minor things like first aid if needed, most common question was "Where's the beach?" That job was one of the best Ive ever had, imagine it Waikiki, girls from all over the world in Bikinis.  I love Hawaii

Officers Serving Warrant Use Taser Gun On Man

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Two Wyandotte County officers used a stun gun on a psychiatric patient holding a sword, and the incident was caught on tape, KMBC's Peggy Breit reported Wednesday.
Sheriff's deputies went to the man's apartment to take him to a state mental hospital, but when they arrived, he had barricaded himself inside a bathroom.
The incident was caught on tape by a camera mounted within the Taser gun; it records both audio and video. "There are a lot of unknown factors when you go to places, and therefore we need to utilize technology available, such as the Taser equipped with the camera," Wyandotte County Jail Administrator Randall Henderson said.
The video showed the man holding a kind of dagger, and the officers repeatedly told him to drop the weapon. The man didn't drop it, and the officers used the stun gun. The man didn't fall to the ground until he'd been shocked three times.
Once the man was calm, the officers transported him to the hospital without further incident.
"Here's a prime example if the Taser's utilized appropriately, that we can accomplish the task at hand and everyone will fell like the job was well done," Henderson said.
