Martial Arts Topics / Re: Karambit Vs. straight blades
« on: July 24, 2014, 11:16:40 AM »
My training partner and I have debated this too.

Being from Michigan, I'd like to see how effective a karambit is at slashing through a carhart or leather jacket. That is my primary concern. I think thrusting offers better penetration against assailants wearing heavy winter clothes.

I also worry about how a karambit will look to a jury. A straight pocket folder is much less vicious looking. I seem to recall one legal case that involved a Kali player who used a knife in self defense, and he was demonized by the prosecution as a "trained killer with knowledge of the human anatomy". I'd rather not add on to those woes by using a wicked looking blade.

I'm grateful that this group is within reasonable driving distance from me and I'm looking forward to coming down to train as often as my schedule permits.

I saw a lot of skilled and dedicated practitioners, and a group energy that was very supportive of growth. You guys have a good thing going here. Glad I could take part.

Martial Arts Topics / Ilmu/Kebatinan in silat/FMA
« on: March 20, 2013, 05:17:31 PM »

Just interested in hearing some opinions on this subject from different sources. Feel free to move the topic if it's in an inappropriate area of the forums.

Full disclosure. I'm a psychologist and come at the topic of spirituality in martial arts from a very skeptical/scientific viewpoint.

Some FMA and Silat schools delve very heavily into this topic. Personally, while I am open to people practicing the mystical beliefs of their choice, I'd rather keep my spirituality separate from my martial arts training. This was one of the reasons I sought out DBMA. All the schools local to me in Metro Detroit are very heavily influenced by a lot of Indonesian mysticism, and while I'm respectful, I just have no interest in it.

Just curious as to what other people think.

Wow, nice execution.

It almost looks like Cella saw the kick coming and started to turn into to it to try a double block with his arms.

And Guro Crafty, I had to drive a manual transmission with my right arm in a cast before. Not fun. Lots of steering with knees and reaching over with the left hand. Glad you got the x-ray though.

Thank you Crafty!

Martial Arts Topics / Metro Detroit area

Hello All,

I'm in the Metro-Detroit area and looking for people to train with. We have an informal training group going right now, but it's all beginners that I'm teaching some basics to.

I looked at the instructor list and couldn't find anyone in Michigan so if you can point me to someone that teaches in my area, that would be great.

If not, my plan is to start buying videos and introducing dog brothers techniques into our group (with proper credit given to DBMA, of course).

I'm also going to be sending in a membership application here in a few days and plan on getting to a gathering next year (sooner if there's one on my side of the country).
