The new guy
« on: February 15, 2008, 09:10:56 AM »
Hey guys,
I wanted to introduce my self to the forum. I am literally brand new to stick fighting and weapons in general. I have a background in Muay Thai and MMA. I have recently decided to take a new route on my path and start training FMA. This is for a variety of reasons the primary being that I’m getting to a point where I feel comfortable in any of the open hand ranges, especially against your average Joe. I know that there is always someone who can best you and in my case many people who can do so. I will still train Muay Thai and roll occasionally. Anyway I have admired the Dog Brothers from afar for many years, since I got the panther productions tapes back in the day and look forward to the input.
My first kali class is this weekend and I will be keeping a blog about this new path as both a public forum for responses and also as a journal to see where I have been.
If you want to check it out it will be at: http://theroosters45.blogspot.com/

Thanks guys,

The Rooster

Rooster, welcome aboard!  Where are you training Kali in DC?

You may be interested to know that a Dog Brothers Training Group has recently formed in Manassas, VA @ Team Ruthless (aka Warrior's Forge)... here's a link to the discussion thread:

Porn Star Dog is teaching, and the experience so far has been excellent.

Porn Star lives up in the DC area, the Ruthless folks can put you in touch with him.

PS has some featured fights in our soon to be released double disc DVD "Dos Triques Formula"

Crafty... cool!  Good to have Brian's info on the site.

Rooster, that link gives you all the info you need.  Dino is conducting "stick conditioning" every Saturday, even when Porn Star isn't teaching, so call up Dino and he can give you the details.  I just got back and can barely type, as today's workout included over 1400 stick movements (slashes, jabs, redondos, etc), forehand and backhand, left and right hands.  Oh I forgot, we used 24" black iron pipes instead of sticks.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Guys,
I just went to my fist class on Saturday and unfortunately I don’t think it’s for me. Just kidding.  I think I’m hooked already. We worked on footwork, forward triangle, reverse triangle, est. Learned the basic strikes and moving while hitting. Anyway I have a lot of thoughts on this an I will post them on the blog on Monday but I will say that as someone coming from MMA BJJ MT this was an eye opening experience to what I believe is a VERY combat effective system and I’m stoked to be heading down this path.

Whats up guys, this seems like an appropriate thread for me to put my first post in since I'm a new guy here and I'm from DC also.  My experience with Martial Arts has been with Aikido, otherwise I'm not familiar with Kali but I am looking to get started!

For quite some time I've been really interested in the Dog Brothers and I hope to get further involved with them.  I'm definately feeling good about this...

David Wink was an early training partner of Top Dog when he was still on the east coast. I think I heard that he was nominated for a Nobel Prize too, but not for stick fighting.

Here's David Wink's site:  http://fcmaa.com/

Too far for me to drive for regular classes, but I'd sure like to attend a seminar.  PhilipG is right... I found an article by Top Dog that has good things to say about David Wink:

Hey guys,
I have to say, I have been around alot of martial arts instructors and Dave is amazing. The way he breaks the stuff down is pure science and no bullshit. after my first class I was sore in new ways and some of the things they are doing are really progressive and hurt like hell
